zerocool22 started following c500ii vs pyxis 12K LF
-
Hi, I really like the pyxis 12K LF. But... now with the price drop on the C500II they are almost in the same ballpark pricewise. And I am not sure why I would pick the pyxis over the c5OOii. C500II: Ibis, monitor, AF(allthough blackmagic is catching up), internal ND's. pyxis 12K lf. It's newer. Might be easier to mount on a gimbal. Have not seen any image comparisons. I love the IQ from both camera's, but have not seen any side by side by these 2 camera's. Any other input? Thanks!

Apologies for the delayed reply. I think it depends how you want to expose. In low light situations, similar to the ones you describe, I find that at least a part of the subject is usually decently well lit. In the example of camping headlights a nearby subject (person, tree, what-have-you) would be illuminated - you can expose fairly normally for it, but everything else (background, distant subjects) will fall off into shadow. And the shadow area will be nicely controlled, not noisy. That looks nice to me on video. The problems come when people want to 'see in the dark', and treat a night time scene a little more like a daytime scene. If you raise distant subjects or background info up, either using exposure or in post, you can run into problems with noise and unnatural colours. Also, to me, the whole scene starts to look 'off' as the viewers mind starts to reject the unnatural light levels being portrayed. If you want the former exposure effect, rather than the latter, I think the C70 is the better option. If you want the latter effect then the C80 is definitely going to win. Funny enough it was head torch only footage that sold me on the C70 in the first place.

I have one on the way after looking at the image samples here: https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_14_ultra-review-2683p5.php The 75mm F1.8 lens in particular... Like some of the famous Zeiss Distagons it has a floating element to get close. With such a fast aperture in combination with the close-focussing abilities make it look incredible. The 14 Ultra in fact has two such lenses, a 75mm and 120mm. And the main imager is 1" Which also in the close-to-mid focus range has a very shallow DOF. I have lighted tweaked that last one in Pixelmator Pro, the JPEGs have a surprising amount of chonkiness to play with. Then there's the RAW capabilities... With Motion Cam Pro there's the RAW Cinema DNG recording. Within Xiaomi's own camera app is the expert RAW mode for stills, with Leica's colour tuning. This allows you to completely turn off any noise reduction and sharpening... one of the main caveats of modern smartphones. I think at £600 used this is the real deal. The 15 Ultra doesn't change things very much, indeed to go any better would require a big leap. We're talking at least Micro Four Thirds size sensor instead of 1", and F1.4 maximum aperture. And to make this pocketable is going to require a lot of physics bending. There are some other options like the Oppo Find 7 Ultra, and Vivo X100 Pro which have a large 1/1.4" sensor on the telephoto lens, 200MP. But the lens quality itself is a bit compromised as a result. The Vivo X100 Pro has the Zeiss modes, Zeiss lens simulations, even RAW video built into the main camera app I believe. But I find Xiaomi's image processing with Leica to be the best of the bunch. Looking forward to when it turns up from CEX this weekend with the photography kit which gives it ability to use filters and a proper shutter release button! I think for street photography requiring stealth, 3 lenses in one pocket and very high speed, this is a better choice than a proper camera, X100 VI or Leica Q. The ultimate shot getter?

Yes but I mean rather than selling to buy, you have already bought so just sell, same as with shares etc, ie, buy when low and sell when high. The only thing in this situation is only a few knew and in the future, will know exactly when that time is.

Powershot V1 in China have hiked up the price to $1099 from RRP of $820.. crazy!
-
Yep, great tech. An area where China leads Japan (and everyone else) by far.

Plus if there's an economic downturn which has few productions being made, more people may sell their gear for various reasons including paying the mortgage or buying food - in which case, a flood of items on the used market and minimal buyers means prices drop.

Dark Enlightenment is a thing. Sure, you get a bigger number for selling used, but the money you get for it buys less as inflation screams upward. Hooray.

Yes, the used prices might go up just as much as the new prices, making it a wash. Except when the prices eventually fall when sanity kicks in (but that might be giving too much credit to some).

Or the opposite which is if there was something you needed to buy, if the possibility existed, to have done that a couple of weeks back, but selling anything in the near future might actually be to your benefit because if used prices do increase?

Clearly, if you have a camera to buy, you should have already done it. New and used prices will probably go up by 10-30% or more. Fortunately, I already have 2 cameras that work great. I hope to potentially wait out this presidency. The crazy thing is I bet there are countries, businesses, and individuals everywhere who are going to try the same. I'm trying to imagine if companies like Canon, Nikon, or Sony are going to just cut back production or simply stop. You'd be insane to have a company right now and continue just like before. They need money coming in. Are Asia and Europe enough of a market for them? Maybe, but there are tough times ahead.

Already seeing used cameras going up in prices in my neck of the woods. Specifically the R6 MKII, which has been going for around $2K CAD used for a while, is now going for $2700-$3K CAD.

Flagship smartphones are more sophisticated than any compact these days. Oppo Find X8 Ultra has four sensors. An 1 inch main camera, two portrait periscope cameras, one 3x and one 6x, and an ultra wide. The 1 inch sensor has f/1.8 on it. Its equivalent to f/3.8 on APSC.

Same problem over here local growers, can not get locals to harvest vegetables. Its all done by back packers and islanders now. In less than ten years. Its gone from contractors, and two crews of casual pickers. Which consisted of few locals and the grey nomads who were either heading north for the winter or south depending on the season. Local contractors who were paid by the box and had usually picked 70 pallets of produce and could go home by lunchtime while the casuals kept picking till 3ish to pick the same amount. Carrots are machine harvested and fed straight into semi trailers and carted away you might see 3 people all day. Other vegies like lettuce, cabbage, leeks in winter still done by hand which requires a tractor driver, forklift driver and 5 people cutting and 2 or 3 packers. Theres still jobs in town, their easy to fill. With air conditioned offices, desk chairs, but try filling a position that has manual labor involved and outside, its a different story. Theres some sort of arrangement that if backpackers do 90 days of work in an agricultural area, then the government adds 90 days to your visa. Which probably works out great at the end they can go do all the touristy things they want to do like visit ayers rock and the great barrier reef while the government get it all back in fees, permits and fuel excises. Still good on them for living the dream. my brother recently bought the block next door, when it came up for sale. So he could be closer to his b̶r̶o̶t̶h̶e̶r parents. i suspect he's in for a surprise when payday comes as he's used to getting a builder's wages in the city. Years ago i grew 4 little piglets into bigger piglets. Those 4 little piggies did not go off to market.. i could buy a 400 kilo pallet of 2nd hand apples for $50 which made for cheap feed, however if you only fed them grain or pellets there is simply no profit in it. I also know for a fact, pigs will eat anything, literally anything.. which is why i'm not interested in buying either Chinese pig meet or US pig meat and i'm happy neither does the rest of australia even if trump does want to have a good cry about it lol

There really is no good that will come of this, at least not for 99% of us. There will of course be those who reap massive profits from the chaos, but it'll be at the expense of all of us and it'll be the same people who are already obscenely wealthy. A sizeable portion of this country wants fascism, even if they are too dumb enough to realize it. Arrest someone here legally for practicing free speech? Many will applaud it, more will shrug with indifference. Send someone wrongly to a prison in El Salvador? Again, people will applaud it while others, again, are indifferent. "Law and order" they proclaimed, yet they cheer on the government ignoring supreme court rulings and the pardoning of thousands of people who violently stormed the capitol building. The economy is on the brink of a recession. Some economists already think we're in one. Things are going to get a lot worse. It's not just that we're being run by a bunch of morons, it's that they're truly bad actors who want to cause irreparable damage to the federal government. The opposition party is incompetent and ineffectual. I have no faith that they'll put up an effective fight for the midterms, let alone in the next presidential election, assuming we have one. Shits so fucked.

I guess the US doesn't want those in other countries to invest in their businesses. I don't think they realize the consequences if this goes through. https://www.theglobeandmail.com/gift/88b464f77c2863c66a9326ee3eb93664ae337885ca5483f02881b645ad033c36/SWHM3X32RBFQFM2OX4MG5IDEWY/ Canadian investors holding U.S.-listed securities could see a sudden spike in the amount of tax they owe under a recent U.S. bill that has been tabled as a retaliatory measure against what it calls “discriminatory taxes” of foreign countries, including Canada’s digital services tax. If passed, the proposed legislation would add 5 percentage points to the withholding tax rate each year for four years on certain types of U.S. income for anyone living in a country that imposes a tax that the U.S. considers discriminatory or extraterritorial for U.S. citizens or corporations. The additional 20-per-cent withholding tax would remain in place as long as the other country’s disputed tax is in effect. The proposed bill appears to be targeting jurisdictions that have implemented a digital services tax on large U.S. technology companies or have an undertaxed payments rule (UTPR). Canada’s DST was enacted in 2024. The proposal means that Canadians who own U.S. securities that pay dividends or interest, or have realized gains, could see a large tax increase, said Kris Rossignoli, a cross-border tax and financial planner with Cardinal Point Wealth in New York.

Seems like there's a goal for all of this. Wonder what that is? One can only imagine. Assuming we're allowed to imagine and aren't put to death by the state beforehand. What would supply side Jesus do?

Makes me want to get a Panasonic LX15 and do a parody TikTok channel. By the way a quick look at the shots on this page... https://www.gsmarena.com/xiaomi_14_ultra-review-2683p5.php Should give people pause for thought spending a grand on a compact! That 3.2x lens in particular at close focus distances is a gem.

Surely the gymfluencers will be flocking to the S1Rii after that recent magnum opus ?

Allison Johnson (ex-DPReview) has written this for the Verge... https://www.theverge.com/tech/649145/canon-powershot-g7x-iii-tiktok-how-to-buy Suppose you are an alien. You've grown up with a smartphone all your life, never touched a DSLR or mirrorless camera before and had no desire to as they were all £5000 and too big. Then you're bombarded by attractive people in beautiful places taking photos with a flash. Canon is the default choice as the Powershot series have always had the highest sales, some might say nicest colour and definitely the most brand recognition. The G10 is old but popular with CCD lovers and Gen Z, but the G7 X II takes it too a new level - modern 1" sensor, proper video, flip out screen and RAW. And importantly it was always a lot smaller than a Fuji X100 and has a zoom. So for the alien, it becomes the best camera choice bar none. I had the G7 X II and the III but didn't stick with 'em. Of course we know there are far better choices for compacts and flash photography. The Sony RX1, the Fuji X-T30, Panasonic LX100 and numerous others. Yet the appeal of the G7 X series stays purely due to the massive traction it's gained in explainer videos on TikTok from really attractive influencers. There must be a lesson somewhere here for the camera manufacturers. Gerald No-shots doesn't sell cameras. Models do.
