Interview with Yoshiyuki Inoue, Senior Engineering Planner for the Panasonic GH3
Orangenz and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
So that means...? I guess it means he wants to prioritize quality over functionality, ie. no multi-aspect sensor? Great interview. Cool to talk to someone who doesn't speak your language but is clearly a very brainy person.
Yes that is correct. Image quality was priority over multi-aspect. He was incredibly intelligent, his notepad left me almost speechless at the end.2 points -
Exclusive - Canon confirm 1D C 4K DSLR is same hardware as the 1D X
Let me guess, someone who hasn't actually edited C300 footage? The codec is really, really good. It holds up really well. Stop looking at paper specs and download some footage. Yes, 4K might have more problems with that codec, but equally likely, it will be the same, or it might be better.
I don't get it either. The C300's footage grades great, so does Alexa footage, which squeezes 13+ stops of DR into a 10 bit 1080p image. Granted dSLR footage (certainly even ALL-I from the 5DIII) has these problems, but I just can't get them to show up with higher end cameras.1 point -
Again, the codec is the weak link. A greater dynamic range would tend to make banding even more apparent. It doesn't surprise me, but it's nice that they were open about it! Yes quite, they aren't a charity, they've created a product for a profit and it's entirely up to them the price they sell it for and how they cripple it in order to make money The only thing that will stop them doing this is competition. Apple are a good comparison in that, in their field, when their big product came out the competition was scattered and riddled with compromises. They gained a monopoly. Since then, Android devices have been buggy and all over the place in comparison, but are gradually pulling it together. Apple are separating themselves by producing a premium product and providing a consistent experience. It seems Canon do the same: they may not offer the best of everything stats wise but you know what you're getting. That's really important at some levels, when costing up jobs and all your cameramen are booked up. You say to someone you've never worked with before "can you use 5D or C300" and it's usually "yes". Say to them "can you use a GH2 or AF100" and they usually go "errrrrr". That could change with time though, pride and falls etc. But for now Canon are dominating that section of low to mid level production in my experience. So for the true Indie, maybe Canon won't be the best choice as time goes on, but these two cameras aren't designed to profit from home film-makers, and most home film makers won't actually benefit from 4K at all. Nor RAW to be honest. Personally, right now I don't wish I had a better camera, I wish I knew more good actors :S But let's not start that debate up again! I'm convinced we'll get a reasonably-priced 4K camera soon, though I'd settle for good sharp-looking 1080 with a good sense of depth! But either way, they can take their 8000 pound firmware update and stick it where the sun don't shine.1 point
Comedy is regional. Tragedy is global. You consider it a joke calling a senior engineer a " LIER " in public forum. You consider me as a person with lack of sense of humour for pointing out to your possible ignorance to Japanese culture. This is not British Culture. This is you joking around with disregard for others' honours and opinions. Hey c'mon you have sense of humour you should be able to take a little criticism. What's all this agitation about !?
I didn't call him a liar. I made him a character who called himself a liar. It was a comedy sketch by definition. You're right I don't know a lot about Japanese culture. I know a bit but it doesn't interest me that much.I certainly don't subscribe to the concept of honour. Also, what agitation?1 point

4K Leica Video Camera?
Anil Rao reacted to tony wilson for a topic
leica made one of the greatest super 8 film cameras in the 1970s the leicina special with an m mount and 10mm and a zoom lens it was tiny and superb piece of engineering i have 3 and they still work never been serviced. using an existing body dumping the latest stills sensor and sticking a lower resolution sensor using a kodak or dalsa ccd would not be an epic project for them. clearly they already have live view prototypes for future cameras andrew needs to go fined them at the show and explain to them fuji is bound to do something interesting so trump the future competition1 point -
Regarding multi aspect ratio deal: As evil_thought2 mentioned, "There is NO LOGICAL reason why multi-aspect ratio would have negative impact on the image quality." I think what Inoue meant is that a. Sony won't produce multi-aspect ratio sensor b. to get MSR, they gotta use Panasonic sensor which falls behind Sony's. So, in order to serve 'better quality', they had to let go of MSR and use Sony sensor. I think it's the case since his answer is "no comment" when asked if it's Sony sensor they're using. That's the exact same response Olympus made when they were asked million times. However, GH3 special site indicates it's using LIVE-MOS sensor which is the Panasonic thing.1 point
That comment is not civilized. Only if you knew a bit more about Japanese culture. May be you should consider his action as a noble move from a highest ranking engineer. Perhaps he is the team leader for those 100 members researching the subject. Yet again, only if you knew a bit more about Japanese culture.
I agree. I think the fact that he was listening to Andrew and taking the time to get specifics and write them down in his notepad. The point being that he's going to look into it and see if it's possible. I think that's a pretty big deal.1 point
Inoue: The AF100 is another division, we are focussed on the consumer DSC. We are completely seperate.
Sigh.1 point

Thanks for the interview Andrew, this must have taken ages to transcribe. Things I infer from this interview: How do you come to prioritise what’s most important, because you must have a huge list of feature requests? We had interlaced to make progressive – not so good. Translation: You thought you were getting progressive video from the GH2. but you weren’t. It was interlaced that was converted to progressive. This is one of the reasons the GH2 had such a strong video look. Plus we spent so long doing that, we forgot to add peaking Is the HDMI output 4-2-2? No its 4-2-0. Why would we spend so long designing and optimising a stable high bit codec in camera if we wanted you to use a fucking ninja? The output is perfectly suitable for a field monitor, but you won’t be recording shit out of it. Is it a Sony sensor? No comment. Translation: Yes it is it’s the same sensor from the EM5. We saw Olympus taking all the glory for having better quality so we decided to sacrifice the multi aspect sensor for the slightly better dynamic range of the Sony one. This will have an effect on the overall video quality as well. The footage will look less like the old Panasonic video-like look and more of a Sony video-like look. So if you want a more film like look you will have to save up and either put up with the artificially crippled detail of the 5dmk3 which should be sharp as a tack due to the 3*3 pixel binning, or put up with the rainbow moiré of the BMC because they skipped putting in an optical low pass filter in this version to get the camera out the door. One more question. Electronic follow focus....? Response: (Gets notepad out.) Remember when I said There are over a 100 members researching all over the world? I Lied!!1 point

Velbon SPT-1 - Add rod support?
Julian reacted to QuickHitRecord for a topic
I posted this months ago but only just came figured out a simple solution: Here is the part that you need to buy: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270941674813 Specifically this one because the center groove on the top shelf is long enough to cover two of the three Velbon mounting holes located on the bottom of the main assembly. You could do it with a cheaper one (there are many out there, just search for "DSLR base plate"), but you probably will not get full hole coverage and you may have twisting issues. I also put two screws in the Manfrotto quick release plate to prevent twisting (I have been doing that a lot lately). Now it easily slides into any Manfrotto fluid head with no chance of twisting. I took out the adjustable-height riser and re-bolted it together so that it would be more compact, but you can always leave it in if you want to. This method is useful for putting a matte box in front of a Lomo square front, a Hypergonar HiFi-2, or any oversized lens. You could also mount a follow focus to use with your lens while keeping the ease-of-use afforded by the Velbon. I hope that this is helpful to someone.1 point -
I admire your screenwriting skills greatly germy! Though as someone who owns and uses a real U87, i can tell you that after a couple days you aren't thinking "that's a U87." You are thinking about whether it gives the vo talent a cold or a kazoo voice or it's perfect. And if you are worth hiring you are simultaneously considering the bigger picture of what this means to the delivered narrative, and adjusting accordingly. And after doing vo with a U87 you aren't likely to waste much time with the GH3's of microphones. Let the local car dealerships cope with that sound.
Oh yes brother.. That's a whole different discussion, lol:) It's funny just how parallel the production philosophies mingle in video/music. I took a break from it after 15 years of having music i really didn't like, shoved down my throat. When it gets to the point where one day you have a revelation, that presents no point in your life where you dreamed of being a mastering engineer for shitty music... It's time to regroup i think, lol. I've mixed and recorded with some pretty coveted gear over the years also man, and i agree with you on the level of expectation... once you get to that level.. Though i don't think we would have said, "Hey Bono... we're gonna try an SM58 first....see how that goes.". But that was back before it was neccessary to autotune someone, until they sounded like they had a cold, lol.... My other issue with the modern music scene. :) It's basically to the point where finding anything worth liking is like finding a treasure.... Which can be rewarding for those who work in the craft... We still need to be inspired also from time to time. But even my heroes aren't a sure thing like they used to be, anymore... "Prometheus" let me down. The last thing Hans Zimmer did that impressed me was the fast moving viola arpeggio behind the theme in "like a dog chasing cars" on The Dark Knight. I used to love his unpredictability in cues, but he hasn't really done it like that since the 90's... And the only song i liked this year, came out last year by Amos Lee called "Violin.". I sure as hell didn't hear it on the radio though.. Guess it's all subjective to personal flavor these days, People like hearing computers sing:)1 point
