I've just started daydreaming because of this... I love cinemas and theaters... what city are you in, if you don't mind me asking?
I live in a small town in southern Sweden called Näsum... I'm an artist painter, my wife a musician. We wanted a place to arrange concerts and exhibit paintings, and found this closed down 110 seats theatre/cinema with adjoining house, built around 1900, for next to nothing... it is quite a special feeling to watch movies in your own cinema, with the dog snoring on a rug...1 point
That is a MONSTER thread. I have gotten a lot of good information from it. I think that the price bubble will burst in the next two years when SLR Magic releases their anamorphic lens.
wow such faith in a china cctv rehouse outfit. that company has not had an original thought yet. the noctor lens they sell is a japanese cctv lens from goyo optical with a m/43 mount instead of c most of the wide stuff they make is cctv lens with wide angle attachments built in. the chinese would make life and quality easier if they just purchased some of the great companies still going in japan. one of the slr guys wanted to buy an isco from me and as he had paid 400 for a kowa thought i might part with an isco for 800 i assume they did not want to spend 4000 dollars on a lens they needed to destroy to copy : ) an iscorama can be used on movie cameras that arri and sony have not even made yet with amazing results no matter what size sensor. an iscorama was never a cheap lens 1400 sterling in the late 1980s for an iscorama 54. when you consider the best nizo and canon super 8 cameras at the time cost 300-400 that is a big price to pay for an optic for your home movie camera. the ebay isco price drop was simply because the super 8 shooters stopped shooting and went to mini dv. the upward price move because of a director putting an isco 36 on his 5d slr magic will not get near a moller or an iscorama unless they use some amazing optic wizz and really improve build quality of existing products.1 point -
I feel that Sony are a year or two behind Red on the signal processing side (don't forget the Epic has been around two years now with similar specs).
Based on what? On paper (and judging by the F65 footage), the Sony F55 will beat RED on DR, low light, colour rendition, will have a higher native ISO, high FPS, better codec choices and has a CCD sensor. The only tick RED has left is 5K output and the F65 just trumped that with 8K. Sony are currently ahead of RED in every aspect, with the excepetion of personal choice aspects, eg, ergonomics, customer service etc and possibly price, when the dust settles.1 point

Solid announcement from Sony. But I don't think either are revolutionary. I think they are where people would expect them to be, given the current state of the technology. I feel that Sony are a year or two behind Red on the signal processing side (don't forget the Epic has been around two years now with similar specs). Canon, despite having a good sensor in the C100/300/500, look to be 5 years behind in terms of the electronics and codecs behind the sensor.1 point

I'm lucky enough to own and live in an old cinema (with a beautiful Bauer 35 mm projector with Möller Cinemascope and all..), and have often projected my GH2 videos in full HD to the 6 meters wide sceen. from our Optoma projector.. looks wonderful I can assure you! No need to upscale.1 point
@sanveer Upscaling is what a 4k DLP does with normal 2k films. And guess what? The difference is hard to see, although the resolution of, er, true 4k means four times that of 2k. 'Overly detailed images kill it, for me.' This is no longer about detail. It is about no longer seeing resolution. And a very well defined image looks more organic, not desperately sharp. 'There is a certain charm in soft dreamy images.' In comparison to the unsharp mask blockyness with which the details crumble into focus with the DSLRs. You really should go and see the film. In 4k.
I don't know if India has any 4k screens. I guess, since Reliance is in business (they picked up Dreamworks), so, maybe, in another few months, 4k resolutions theatres will start popping up, suddenly. I guess, if you're going to keep 4k soft and dreamy, like film, then, you're just increasing the size of the projection, ala IMAX.
I'd like to see GH2 upscaled to 4k and projected!! we should do a test.....
Dude, would LOVE to see, this one. GH2 @ 4k. It should be shot SUPER SHARP, but, the colors should be a little pale (maybe with some purebred Leica lens) and then softened in upscaling. wow1 point
Great cameras. I always guessed Sony has many advantages over the competition (it manufactures sensors, TVs, Blue Ray, LCD Screen, Tablets, etc etc, basically everything, plus Columbia Tristar Pictures). Though, maybe the F5 and F55, will eat as much into the F700 and F65 territory, a they will, into the EPICs and Alexas. I am guessing that, Arri will be out with a 4k Camera, before the end of the year (maybe they will just put some shit, into a fancy looking housing/ casing, and say its a brilliant 4k camera, with 15 bits of Dynamic Range, and can shoot 240fps @ 4k RAW, and then tell their engineers, to get going, at a war footing. :D Since none will be allowed to review the camera, none would really be able to call the bluff.)
I think they're just sticking to how awesome their Alexa is now.. Skyfall was uprez'd to 4k from arriraw. I figure that's their angle, lol.. "Shhhhiiiiiit bra!! We don't need 4k! .... Our TWO-k is still better.... Aint nobody watchin' 4k anyway!... Hugo bitchiz!"1 point

I'm convinced that it's almost impossible to compete with Sony. They are on a roll that is impressive when you think about all the cameras they've produced all the way down to their Consumer Camcorders. They must have an enormous R&D department to have simultaneously developed so many cameras. It's unreal. They move faster than everyone else too.1 point
