    Zeiss 50mm Ultrascope?

eBay dealing in lenses is becoming ever more cynical. Lot's of stupid prices with no relation to the quality of items. Broken things sold as "minty" what ever the f**k that word is supposed to mean. Engineering rarity and status , and you can track shops buying up everything so as to sell them on one by one at unrealistic prices. It's just madness out there now. I'm thinking of making the next film on EF-S glass just to make a point...   R@RE L@@K CANON EF-S 18-55!   LOLZ

  2.   Why address this to me?   An ASC though does command a certain professionalism because of the work they have done that has proven themselves Experience and knowledge often equate to talent if an ASC or  BSC offered to be my DP I would be very happy indeed. They are extremely knowledgeable talented people who know far more than I will probably ever know about being a DP.   Look I may not have liked Roger Deakins ASC BSC Cinematography in skfall with the Alexa and I'm entitled to an opinion. We criticise the pro's precisely because they are the best of the best. I might say I hated the last indiana jones film but there is more talent in that film than I may ever have in one of my miserable little efforts but I judge them by the very best of the best standards. I may be harsh but it doesn't mean I dont respect them for what they do because I damn well know how near impossible it is what they do do.   If Leang wants to tell me I know jack then fine He's right Until I earn my stripes that is. I have been learning all I can and making films but spent very little time actually directing But I feel I am ready that is why I want to make a breakout film.   I respect my peers. I may not always like them but in a professional capacity I would always be a professional because I do respect the work they do.

  3. Hi i am wondering about buying a GH3 it will be used for landscape/nature footage but i am uncertain about how much better the GH3 dynamic range in video mode is? I know that the GH3 is superior in photo mode but how much better is it's dynamic range in video? The GH3 and a decent lens is a large investment and i want to know that there will be a big different.   I want a smooth organic image quality. I have seen alot of sample footage and yes the GH3 is much sharper and certainly superior bitrate compared to the RX100. But i am more uncertain about the dynamic range.   Would be nice if maybe someone can make a dynamic range comparison between the RX100 and the GH3. With the best possible settings on both cameras.   I own a RX100 which is certainly a great camera. The GH3 is interesting but i have not been convinced yet that it will be worth the cost.   Dynamic range is very important but i can't afford the cost of the BMC with lenses and accesories.   I would really wish for a camera of the size of the RX100 which would have the dynamic range of the BMC in it's video mode. I hope it will happen some day.   I have also been looking at the canon HF G20 and G25 cameras but am disappointed that they still are 1080i based cameras. The panasonic SD900/X900/X920 have even smaller active sensor size then the G20/G25 so they are out of the question. I have the SD600 (which is 3xcmos and 1080p 50fps) and the dynamic range certainly is limited and kills all chances of the organic quality i want to see.

  4. In the early days of DSLR video the codec was probably the weakest part of the camera. With the advent of uncompressed HDMI out - the codec is no longer a weak point but sensor sampling becomes an Achilles Heel. Can the Nikon D5200 benefit from a hike in image quality from using an external recorder?

  7.   Large VFX facilities can't live off large VFX blockbusters, actually.  These are taken on for the prestige.  Large VFX blockbusters likely cost a VFX facility to be a part of.  Yeah, they're expensive, but not for the studios.   Success in the VFX business is breaking even.  You can extend this to success for a vendor in Hollywood is breaking even.  Historically the bigger facilities not subsidized by giant corporations or otherwise not bound to the same financial pressures as a standalone facility (ie. Sony Pictures Imageworks and ILM, companies with higher overhead than they bring in) have to keep their doors open by taking on work that's actually profitable.     Both R+H and Digital Domain, prior to recent problems, had their doors kept open by having a very active commercials division, with a separate staff from features.  DD would have shuttered its doors after Titanic, most likely, if it hadn't been for the profitability of its commercial division.  R+H as well was kept afloat by this business which allowed it to take on feature work.  Sony has tried repeatedly to get rid of Imageworks because it's a money sinkhole with no chance of being profitable.  Lucas too, once he started to ramp down his interest in making more films, packaged up ILM, moved it to the city and started looking for potential buyers, because even they are more overhead than they can be bringing in.   VFX for motion pictures has pretty much always been a bad business to be in if your idea was to generate revenue.  And so everyone is looking to create their own content.  Perhaps a trade organization will improve things but it's pretty clear that content ownership is the only way to actually do better than squeak by or luck out and have a good year in the black.

  8. Good stuff Blanche.  Here's some audio tips from an audiophile.  B)   First off for talking head framing in docu's I prefer uni lavs since usually your subject is always facing a consistent direction and not so much moving their neck around...most likely always to the direction of the interviewer.  So your uni lav pattern will be focused towards the chin whereas the omni lav's pattern is going to pick up more room presence as its intended to.  Of course most real world scenarios in acting or news you can't be restricted to a static neck position which is why it's mainly used.   Can I assume the Zoom was strapped onto your subject with the lav, and your Sennheiser connected to the cam?   If you plan to do a similar edit again with no talking head cuts then it's to your full advantage to record audio at the closest proximity.  For this sort of docu framing forget about shoe mounting your Sennheiser to the cam.  Instead buy a cheap $20 t-stand for your 400 MKE and position it to the lips of your subject (court room style) as close as possible and strap the Zoom recorder to the stand.  You can now move the mic setup anywhere in the room at full control knowing the frame and avoiding noise as much as possible.  Voice over narration should be a priority if you don't plan on showing any talking heads.  Also, notice your close ups for machinery.  Do the exact same thing with the t-stand setup pointing the 400 MKE to the machine just barely out of frame.  Approach it the way a foley artist attacks challenges.   Good luck Blanche.  Looking forward to your next docu.   If you need advice I'm more than happy to give.

    Grey imports

Has anyone noticed just how many grey importers there are now in the UK for camera gear?   This is the latest to appear in search terms.    The stylish Union Flag at the top and stock photo of businessmen really inspire confidence... LOL   jeez... 20% VAT really is taking its toll   http://www.igadjit.co.uk/about-us-1-w.asp

    Grey imports

I have been importing my cameras for the last few years now ended up selling a Canon 60D for the same price I imported for 2 years earlier with international warranty! I recently got the Panasonic GH3, UK version from a website called 'Onestop Digital', they paid the import duties and it was delivered via DHL in less than a day! The body cost £899 (they've upped the price to £1039 now?) and I paid £40 for a 3 year Mack International warranty and I think that will be sufficient for my purposes. Compare that to most UK companies selling the camera for a little shy of £1200. Onestop Digital used to have an ebay shop for ages, if I never knew that in the first place I wouldn't have bought from them.

    Grey imports

Do people actually still buy locally anymore? (Not including the US), I import any electronics I buy from either B&H in the US or HK, both are considered grey importing.    I don't particularly like walking into a camera store to have some teenager with 2 weeks experience and an EOS rebel tell me the discontinued GF3 (NOT GH3) is a "new" "top of the line" mirrorless camera that replaces DSLRs and that I can pick one up WITH KIT LENS!!!11 for a measly $899............... All I was doing was buying a new rocket air and looking in the Panasonic/Olympus display cabinet.   Not only that, everyone should know by now manufacturer warranties are just a ploy to get unwitting consumers to buy locally and not grey import.. 1. Manufacturer warranty is limited 12 months here and has so many stipulations it's practically useless anyway 2. On some products, the amount you could save would probably cover a repair anyway should anything go wrong 3. Most companies that offer grey imports (including large electronic stores like B&H) offer their own warranty becausssssssse they can offer a product at a lower price and also make extra money with their own warranty which 10 times out of 10 is 10 times better than any manufacturer warranty.   As an example, 5D Mark III costs $3,799 at my local camera store.. I could grey import it from a reputable grey importer, have it delivered to my door from their Australian warehouse within a day or two and save $1,000 brand new unopened in the box. If anything is defective out of the box they will replace it, they give their own warranty which they honor and offer the same extended warranty all the local stores offer. It's a no brainer. Oh and the reason I started grey importing? The owner of an authorized nikon service centre told me it's a good idea, that was when I had to get the only camera iv ever had break repaired.. And I bought that one in Australia.

  12. This is my second outing with the SLR Magic, I figured I'd put myself under pressure with a real life shoot, so this was recorded in 2 1/2 - 3 hours with the GH3 and 25mm.  There is no post image work, details of the complete kit are on Vimeo.   http://vimeo.com/62111836

  14. eyes agree nikon are scum 200 dollars for this digital camera and they add insult to injury by only offering 1 .1 secs of filming. we need to boycott this evil empire. 200 bucks for a piece of plastic and they think they are cool by giving us a free lens with it. sugartown thank you for pointing the limitations out. you cool calm sanity has saved us blind sheep. i have just taken your advice and spent 400 dollars on an iphone can you send me the link for the 4k apple iphone app.

  15. I'm really new on this forum and I'm going to buy and study the Andrew's Guide very soon, I'll do it with great pleasure. I wish to ask something if it is possible. I'm going to buy now my first kit, I study at school to become  cinematographer but I use theyr equpment... So it'is time for me to buy my personal tools. I will buy the canon 600d wich is a 1.6x crop sensor. I will buy it used because I belive that the most important thinks are the lenses. So I wish to buy some Samyang lenses, that have a very nice quality but most important, they works also on full frame. What I want to say is that I want a cheap used DSLR body, but a good lens that I will bring also on full frame one day (when I will have the right money). The question is, does exist some model of anamorphic lens that should I look for, that would be good for 1.6x crop sensor, and also one day for a new full frame DSLR? (I'm really sorry for my bad english). p.s. My intent is to have a nice aspect ratio -but- not the Steven Segal Letterbox 2000!? Or maybe yes? I'm not sure about this...
