I can only assume Canon fired all their engineers and scientists in 2008 and have employed only people in marketing since then. There is no other explanation.3 points

SoMe award winning short film now public.
Andrew Reid and one other reacted to jgharding for a topic
https://vimeo.com/18743558 After completing a few fesitvals, we've made this short film public now. It was shot a couple of years ago all on 550D. That was before I used Magic Lantern, mosaic filter, knew half of what I do now! We're still pretty happy with it now, though we're also confident of doing better on the next one. It was also way before Black Mirror ;)2 points -
Blog Comments - Radioactivity - my 400fps shoot with the Nikon V1
Ratguity reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
http://vimeo.com/62177101 High speed shooting hasn't been possible on DSLRs until now. Again it is the much dismissed Nikon V1 providing the creative inspiration... http://www.eoshd.com/content/9821/radioactivity-my-400fps-shoot-with-the-nikon-v11 point -
Do you guys think this is a game changer? Why? Thanks, mtheory1 point

Has anyone tried their hand at filmmaking apps? If yes, which ones did you like, in particular, and, would recommend, to other filmmakers? I have tried a clapboard app, once. It was pretty neat. I also, used the light app, where different colours of light are available, as well as light blinking, at varying speeds. It was great for creating horror effects, and carrying cheap, portable lighting, which was super portable (for super close up, though). I used it on an iPad. I tried Celtx, but, I don't particularly fancy script formatting apps, so, that wasn't for me. I've tried sound effects, and the teleprompter. The teleprompter was great. I've wanted to try using some music making app (garage band, caustic etc), but, I am not too sure, about my ear for music. Also, since I've never really tried my hand at creating music (I learnt how to play the guitar and the synthesizer, as a kid), I am a little unsure. Anyways, I sold my iPad, so, I wanna try apps for my android. Maybe on a smaller phone or phablet size device. Any suggestions?1 point

'New' Canon SL1 / 100D and T5i / 700D fail to excite

60D+ Mosaic anti-aliasing filter + Magic Lantern = better than all of these "new" releases from Canon1 point -
Are we betting on this? Cos I do like a dead cert... ;)1 point

C300 Blue Sky Banding
earnesync reacted to Arctic-Tern for a topic
Hi All, Has anyone out there had any problems with banding/blocking occasionally on blue skies with the C300? I have encountered this a couple of times and wondered if this is an inherent problem with this particular camera/codec. It would be great to hear anyone else's experiences. Many thanks1 point -
Indeed, The last innovation was the 550D really, because it brought the shallow DOF S35 video of the 7D to a budget body. The best of that bunch is the 600D with crop mode and flip out screen, and Magic Lantern. Since then, only the 5D MKiii has actually improved on video quality. That's expensive, the C series of video cameras are extortionate. Unless they depart radically with the 7D MKii or a similar DSLR leaning towards video, we can't hope for anything other than the disappointing 720p for double frame rate, and huge price if you want aliasing-free video without an after-market filter. Taking 720/50p out of the C100 just to separate the C300 was just scandalous really, considering their cheap SLRs do it from an 18MP sensor. I don't think anyone could quite believe the level of "f**k you" in that camera! And as you quite rightly say, how can we expect anything like innovation when they refuse to even come close to matching the other companies, and even hold back their top-of-the-line C500 unless you use external recording? It's just so disappointing, from the people who started it all in the first place.1 point

Hello, I'm about to modify my Iscorama(original) for close focus. I saw the instructions in another post, and it seems pretty straight forward, but I was wondering if anyone had pictures of this process, just in case? I was also wondering if anyone has any ideas for a new stop, so the front doesn't accidentally screw off? I guess I could use the follow focus gear to stop the rotating, but it would be nice to not have to rely on the gear, since I won't always have a follow focus attached. One more thing... the focus ring on my lens is a little stiff for the follow focus, so I'd like to re-lubricate it. Can I do this when I do the modification? Can someone give me instructions on the process, and what type of grease I should use? I'd like it to rotate very easily. Thanks a lot for your help!1 point

Nikon V1 - shooting 4K 60fps raw for $200
seattledv reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Can confirm all of the above. V2 is so fast at writing images to the card you can do a burst of 4.6K JPEGs and almost immediately do another one straight afterwards. I'm considering upgrading too. Just wish the battery was as large as on the V1 and that the camera wasn't so damned ugly.1 point -
There's something I learned from back when I used to work in print. Most gradients would have some sort of banding when printed, even perfect computer generated ones, and the solution to that problem was to add a bit of noise to the images. You could try adding film grain, you can find authentic 35mm film scans free on the internet, that you can overlay on top of your footage, and it will probably help disguising the banding issues.1 point

Filmmaking Apps
KirkGaydon reacted to jgharding for a topic
simpleDOF is good for depth of field calculations. My most used app is Artemis. It's a viewfinder that simulates the field of view of various lenses and sensors. Saves me getting the wrong prime out. Helios is quite brilliant at predicting the golden hour. I've used this on nearly every shoot. Those are all iOS, but I'm sure there's similar for Android. Well, perhaps.1 point -
Even though western civilization marketing campaigns consist entirely of Hollywood blockbusters, there's still way more independent and art house films than there are blockbusters, by a huge margin, so there's no need to worry really. :) I'd be happy with one of these every year, but it might be asking for too much! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Ngxn9NzLzs1 point
