  1. Got this boy for a quite sometime but couldn't have a chance to test it out.     The spherical glass inside is Carl Zeiss Distagon 35mm T/1.4.   Here are some screen grabs captured with Panasonic GH2 camera. All shot wide open @T/1.4             More photos at http://www.flickr.com/photos/au8ust/sets/72157632477645242/   Can't wait to try it on a real shoot!

  2.     the zeiss spherical part is the only computer designed part of the system shiga of japan was 2 brothers cutting cylindrical anamorphic optics by hand mainly for jdc and technovision. many mathematical  calculations done the old  way with an abacus. original anamorphic designs would have been with spherical english cooke speed panchro optics recipes going back nearly 100 years. cooke are probably the greatest optics ever made for the movies and probably the simplest design. introducing more complex faster zeiss optics into a hand made anamorphic system with different focal length without a super computer redesign will sometimes make for a less than perfect optic. panavision in the early 90s in canada designed a more perfect lens using  military super computers of the time. boring optics. hand grinding any optic is a dead art it is surprising distortion is not worse.
