1. Well, just put a GH3 on his head and you've a cheaper and biological MoWLI:

 2. Putting this the same league as the 5D2 is abject nonsense.  I hope he was paid well.

 3. It is silly to be cynical about something because of how badly people might use it!   I am sure when space travel becomes a cheap practical reality, people will be moaning about all those wannabe Captain Spocks flying around with their warp drives bumping into Mars. Who cares.   The creativity and freedom to move the camera this thing gives us is enormous!   And it is not all about 10 minute tracking shots. Subtle moves and pans / tilts are going to be common uses too. A tripod is so very yesterday.   The MoVI is very similar to the 5D Mark II, it allows a talent to fly. Without talent and creative ideas it is nothing, same with the cameras.

 4. On the telephoto end, it goes way worse than wide-angles. Anything longer than 50mm on a 5D3 is unusable faster than f/5.6-8.   Although, with diopters, it produces great images with telephoto lenses. +1 diopter, Century and Jupiter 9 (at f/2.8)

 5. The taxi shot (watch the BTS) is the one that i just thought "wow".   The shot would have take some serious doing, with traditional equipment.

 6. The 5D was a gamechanger not because it allowed shallow DoF. 35mm adapters also allowed this. It was a gamechanger because all of a sudden thousands of aspiring hobbyists deemed themselves indie filmmakers. A specific look that was - adequately or not - associated with 'cinema' now was affordable (and manageable, because the mentioned  35mm adapters were a pain in the ass, bulky and swallowing light).   Did the change bear any fruit?   First of all, very many terrible DSLR shots. But also a few very interesting ones.   The 5D fulfilled the promise that everybody could shoot attractive video on no budget. And some really did.     This Mōvi (at a price of, say, 2000 bucks) would lead to dramaturgically unmotivated steady shots in heaps. Just as DSLRs led to 99,9% self-related focus transitions and attempts to blur the banality of the motifs. And I don't favor helicopters over cats.   None of the steady shots would change the quality of low budget films at all. It causes us to believe we need yet another gyro gizmo before we can express ourselves. It is a change-delayer.

 7. Great product, but they basically priced themselves out of real success. For $15k ( and even $7.5k ) they will only get highend customers who are a very small market and can afford steadycam rental anyway.    If they went for the 5D/7D shooters and lowered their margins they would've become millionaires. This thing needed to cost $3k to be a game-changer and a true 'companion to DSLR revolution'.   I'm sure this will become a niche product for action/stunt work in cramped environments and will be used on big budget movies in a shot or two and popular with the rental houses. But they missed the DSLR train, high volume sales ( "to own" customers ) and the chance to truly change the game.   Next.

 8. Yeah, jesus huh, yes it's a great bit of kit for some shots, not all shots, it's another tool BUT it isn't a 'Game Changer', it doesn't warrant the build up it's had, it doesn't warrant comparison as a 'game changer' to what the 5D MK II did to the 'industry', shot for shot in a movie how many times use this device, how many times use a 'game changing' camera, every shot.   I'm not judging the device based on the videos put up, I'm commenting on the over use if anything, yes it's to show off the device, better will follow but considering they had the heads up, surprised of whats been put up, that's all.

 9. Check out the GH3 MoVI footage and donate to charity - $3 at Vimeo On Demand If you've ever wanted to pull off just about any camera move with a tiny handheld rig, that just became reality. Potentially replacing the traditional steadicam at a stroke the tiny lightweight MōVI (easier to Google as "Movi") is a gyro stabilised platform with gimbal and hand grip. It appears to be so effective it allows you to pull of a tracking shot without a track, a pan / tilt without a tripod and a dolly shot without a dolly! 10. Been working on this one for quite some time...  Just in time for the premiere for season 3 tonight, my Game of Thrones spoof, "Winter is Coming."   Shot on hacked GH2 with a Bolex anamorphic.  Mounted with an awesome clamp by Redstan  (seriously, top-notch stuff.  Well worth the wait/cash.)   Taking lenses were Nikon 35 f2.8, Konica 40 1.7, Nikon 50 1.2, and Super Tak 135.   Color by Shian Storm's ColorGhear, my first attempt, so be gentle!   Shot at numerous locations over the last few months, including a re-shoot for the band sequences as I couldn't' stand how the first set turned out.  (hated the background.)  We also got very, very lucky with the weather for the outdoor battle scene. Considering we had no budget at all,   I was shocked by how many people showed up for that  shoot!  Enjoy!   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQeazQ0eohQ

 11. Lol, well you have diffraction to fear at smaller apertures you know!!! lol   Anyway, another thing that I am seeing from the footage from these stabilizers is how precise and smooth you can move through the scene, very much reminds me of the way the camera moves in digitally simulated environments like in CGI movies, my brain kept telling my I was watching CGI but I knew better!  So I just realized, this could really help when mixing in CGI elements with real life footage.   https://vimeo.com/63260643

 12. Living in Canada I will end up with a snow owl, which is white. Do you think I should dye it black so it doesn't reflect into the shots?

 13. Brown owl / chicken... All does the same job. Organic accelerometers are wonderful. How about a new brand at NAB 2014? RotarOwl? ChickPan?

 14. essentially what I posted on the other thread:   1. It's FIFTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! 2. Not exactly vaporware, but neither is the BMCC.... 3. I am sixty years old, a "one man band" (more or less), and don't know how to roller skate. Even if I did, if the traffic didn't kill me, my wife would, if she saw me trying a stunt like that! 4. I have no helicopter in the garage. 5. I already have a Glidecam. Have you ever tried to carry a Glidecam, with a 5d and L series lens for more than 20 minutes? It is heavier than you think, and gets much heavier after a long day of chasing cabs.   All in all......great gizmo, would love to have one, amazing footage, thanks for posting. Probably not a game-changer, in the same way the 5D2 was. What we need is a device that writes great scripts, or creates more time to see all these amazing videos online. Yet more eye candy will not make better films...... just like another fuzz tone didn't make better music, back in the day.

 15.   I am not against the MoVI at all.   Right now it comes to my mind that I always wanted to back out of a restaurant (a stair) to the street at night with the guests laughing and raising their glasses. With a friend I made tests with stabilizers, but only with the extreme wide angle of a GoPro we got smooth enough results, and I didn't like the extreme distortion.   This is a good device. All I say, forgive my bluntness, is that it seduces you to show off, that you do things without need. Because, look at the history of film, too prominent traveling shots are distracting, they don't help the story.   AND EDIT: In most situations, a tripod or a shoulder rig will do. For most situations, they would be indeed more appropriate. How many percent? You 'll see, with a MoVI, there will be less cuts, the device changes the approach to the scene.    Brace yourself for an example of nauseating camera work. It's enough to watch the first five minutes, perhaps then you'll see what is looming once these MoVIs get to the hands of the vimeots or youtubers: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ucmZsCwcCjA

 16. I own a LA7200 as well, and have a Redrock Micro Mattebox here. If you can wait a little, I'll try to put them together this week and post some thoughts about it.   (my panasonic came with the Cinetatics mattebox, never used it, though :P)

 17. "Unmotivated steady shots"? What's next? An epidemic of films with shots that are inexplicably exposed, focused, and framed properly? Oh, the horror!

 18. This is not made for the purpose, it's made for quadrocopter and than just customized with booms and clamps for handheld use. Im am long time cinestar user...   All controlers for stabilisation have Mems Accelerometer, Mems Gyros,Magnetometer..etc (zenmuse, picloc, tarot, skyline, radian and you can look into new one cheapest, made just for brushless - alexmos)   MoVI do pans and tilt the same way as any other stabilized gimbal on the market that use 3 brushlees motors (roll, tilt and pan) and zenmuse does excatly the same thing... You can see on the clip that they are using rc station, they have not even made yet dedicated pan/tilt + speed potentiometer joystick and tht's easy thing to do, expecialy if you plan to charge it 15K...

 19. Actually, this time china was first (zenmuse).. This is nothing more than customized cinestar gimbal with brushless motors and side handles. Right now there's quite boom in rc multirotor industry, new brushless gimbals are produced everyday, just look at rcgrups and other rc forums and they all can be easily adopted to camera handheld work... price range will be from $60 for gorpo sized cameras to top $2000 for BMC size/weight. Here is one of cheaper solutions, just add handles and you have moVI http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNTIyNTg4NzAw.html

 20. Although not specifically build for handheld use.... this could be a cheaper alternative ($3500 for the GH2 version)   https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=v6TWct7VqCY

 21. @Andrew   Everything nowadays needs a superlative. Films are all blockbusters, software is awesome, video gadgets are gamechangers. The FS-700 was a gamechanger, the BMCC was a gamechanger, the Speedbooster was a gamechanger.   For a, er, change I think it's good to stay cool. This is not cynism.   An improved steadicam, very highly priced. That's it.   I like it. I really want it.    But am I actually handicapped without it?

 24. I thought I would share some shots of my compact Moeller rig.   The tiny lens is the Pentax Auto 110 2.8/50mm lens, which has a rotating front element, which is not a problem in my setup and is just perfect for a 2.35:1 crop.   A really great feature is that I can set up for precision verticality once and thereafter all my shoots are perfectly aligned. Goodbye slanted video.   Another great feature of the lens support is that it lets me use auto focus rear lenses. I just focus the Moeller and half press the camera shutter to focus the rear lens and I am done. This makes life with a double focus system a breeze.   I decided to name this "Scope on a Rope" :P

 25. @ Nick   No footage yet, I have only just put the final touches to the rig - still waiting on minor parts like metal knobs etc.   I did a quick test with stills with the Moeller and Auto 110 2.8/50mm see below   The first is at MFD plus 1 Zeiss Proxar and the second with 2 Zeiss Proxars 0.5 bayonetted together, sharp enough for me :P
