    New Blackmagic Camera

"I think I'm going to pick up a C300 for $16,000 instead of the $4,000 4k BMC," said no one ever. Cannot believe a 4 grand camera outclassed Canon's ENTIRE cinema line. What a joke. Time to step it up Canon. You now actually have to try hard.

  4. Damn, they're stepping it up big time! Super 35 4k for $4,000?? Who the hell is going to buy the original BMC? ha.      Wow, I officially am going to buy this one. I love what Blackmagic is doing to the industry and how they are really pushing things forward. Really refreshing to see a company put their best foot forward and not just pump out 1080p cameras left and right that no one cares about.   What is every other camera manufacturer thinking right now besides what the fuck do we do now? Canon's ridiculously priced 8 bit 4K 1DC is going to be bought by no one when you could buy 3 of these for the same price and it shoots RAW!!!    Wow, this is a legit game-changer if this camera is real.

  8. This is the next big thing since the 5D2. An incredible cool camera for enthusiasts like me. The Speed Booster made me drool and i'm still waiting to hit that order button for the MFT version.   This little BMPCC + Speed Booster is what I'm aiming for. Freaking amazing.

    New Blackmagic Camera

I don't think in terms of full-frame personally, I've only really shot with APSC and S35 at great length, so when I "see" 50mm in my mind I "see" how it looks on a so-called 1.6 crop.   If you're talking about stills, then fine it's 3x.   If you're talking about film, it's a 2x crop, and Super 35 is standard.    That's how I see it anyway, 135-film size shooting (photographic full frame, 5D Mkii, iii and 6D) is a special case and special use (very low light, very shallow DOF). It's a negative crop of x0.6 or so.

    New Blackmagic Camera

Blackmagic just exposed (again) the entire camera industry. This is what Panasonic should have done to beat Canon and Sony, but didn't even bother to try. I hope they can manage demand better this time around. We need them to.   This is history in the making. I'll buy one when it's available. I can wait.

  11. Sans probably frame rates, this just out gunned the Scarlet, Sony "F's", Red Ones, and everything Canon makes..Actually the Alexa too. Internal Raw on SSD's on S35 with a Global shutter. $4,000. Ftw. Granted, i will have been dead for 60 years by the time it arrives. Lol

  12. For the second NAB in succession Blackmagic are bulldozing down the image quality / price barrier for film production. 4K compressed raw, global shutter and Super 35mm was the unique preserve of Sony with the F55 until today, and that was a $36,000 camera. This is a $4000 one. Gone is that extra margin - unsettling stuff for the big guys. Here's my own personal look at the cameras and the consequences. C mount lenses

I've had mixed success with c-mount on the GH2 in 16mm crop mode.   Be aware that a lot of 16mm c-mount lenses won't cover Super 16mm especially the zooms, and that a lot of c-mount lenses are designed for digital 2/3" or smaller CCD sensors especially the newer CCTV stuff.   You should look to high quality vintage Super 16mm glass from the 60's and 70's but the prices are already quite inflated.   Switar 26mm F1.1 is very nice. Some of the Computar TV lenses from the 80's and 90's are very sharp.

  16. I had been hankering for an Ikonoskop, but put a deposit down on the pocket cinema camera as soon as I was told it was on CVP.  #4 on the CVP waiting list!  Whoop!

  18. For the low-budget film maker, the Pocket Cinema Camera is a "game changer."   If you're a GH2 user looking for much more DR and detail in the shadows, I can't see the GH3 bringing much new to the table in terms of image quality.  By comparison, the GH3 is looking like Panasonic's 5D mk III: an expensive incremental update that, while competent in its own right, fails to fundamentally change the industry to the same degree as its predecessor.

  19. It's funny how now cameras are the accesories of lenses. I'm actually really excited about these two new cameras and what they'll mean for the competition!

    m42 adapter

I agree with tferradans you dont need to be spending a fortune on these!! I have 3 of most adaptors - they are disposable ! as you need backups if you are on a commercial job!!   spend the money on GLASS not metal rings!!

    m42 adapter

My target always has been "the cheapest one, with free shipping". That's M42 to Canon EF. Mine are about six months old, and I use them a lot, almost every day. No electronics, just a piece of metal, like andy lee described. Never had any problem with them. Lens facing upwards, never loose. :P

  23. obligatory:  shit, I think I just came.   Man, this is exactly what I was bitching about to my friend the other day.  There's a ton of great old cinema lenses out there being under-utilized and with the kinda crappy, but handy ETC mode on the GH2, really, who's using them besides those Pentax Q Mount guys?  Anyway, I've been picking them up with the idea that I'd eventually try to pick up a flea and mate it to a thinkpad tablet in some kind of frankenrig somehow, but .. screw that, I'll just sell my gh2 and buy this if they can deliver.  I'm assuming that based on that sensor coverage spreadsheet that the majority of the 16mm film lenses will work well on this, without vignetting, with full resolution so we get all the nice anti-moire/anti-aliasing processing (or not, I dunno).  Take THAT ikonoscop!  :D

  26.   This might pose quite a thread to Panasonic. The whole GH-crowd who uses the Panasonics solely for video is probably switching over to the BMPCC right now. I just did ;)

  27. 1. Shoots slow mo 2. Bigger sensor 3. Takes photos   If you want to take photos with the M43 lenses you use with your BMPCC, and get the bonus of a decent B cam that can be used for slow motion work, then yes.  But it needs a price drop yesterday.   Although, let's not forget that if you're so inclined, you can go to a store and take home a GH3 today. BMD have a lot to prove.

  28. You could buy a Leica M10 and a BMPC for less than a 1D C.

  29. Right now, people should not be too excited about compressed CinemaDNG.   I asked a few months ago about DNG 1.4 lossy compression bit depth, and what I got is the it is 8bit. In fact, Lossy DNG is a 8bit jpeg. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1078247

Let us not forget Canon have only just released the 1D C.  It is not as if it is an old camera.  And they want to charge a $6k premium for basically a firmware upgrade to shoot crappy MJPEG 4k, with no other video features.  I hope I never have to give that loathsome, corrupt company any of my hard earned money again.

I preordered the S35 one at CVP. Having seen how long it took people to get theirs, I figure it's best to stick the order in and just cancel if I change my mind! You have about a year-long cooling off period ;)

If you're interested in the new cameras (who isn't?), you might want to head to DSLR News Shooter in about 8 1/2 hours. At 12:00 PM PST they're streaming a live Q&A with Blackmagic, here: http://www.newsshooter.com/2013/04/08/watch-our-newsshooterteradek-live-coverage-of-nab-2013-from-1200pm-pacific-time-tomorrow-live-guests-include-blackmagic-design/

  38. Sony seem to love making announcements about announcements, show us a product with a time frame or go home.

  39. Whatever comes out on the specs side, this exagonal prototype is really neat !   If the new mount on the DSLR is something  kind of "universal", that could be very interesting.    Anyway, Sony is clearly showing they continue to push forward their pro-sumer/pro video line-up, that's the good news!

  41.   Except that a better lens pretty much strictly dominates an inferior lens. Whereas for 95% of shots, a $300 tripod will look as good or better than the results i get from using this.  And in 80% the 5% of cases where it doesn't, my $500 glidecam will look just as good.   It's a gadget. It isn't even new tech.  Furthermore, this whole thing has been a publicity stunt, so I'm inclined to shit-talk it until further notice.
