  2. Today sees the announcement of a new DSLR sensor from one of Nikon's recent sensor supplier's Aptina which has a headline spec of 4K video at up to 80fps. The highly rated company says it is 'combining DSLR image quality and 4K digital cinema' with the new AR1411HS sensor. Along with Nikon being on the record for wanting to add 4K video to future Nikon 1 mirrorless cameras, could the new Super 16mm sized Aptina sensor pave the way for them to do a Cinema EOS style range and 4K on DSLRs? 4.     You know an LCD screen is not the same as looking through a viewfinder... Also, they've been using measuring tape to focus for over 100 years of film, maybe more than their eyes.  :)

  5. You should be working with an array if you're 4K (or serious 2K or 1080P).  Individual drive sizes aren't really an issue as much as throughput (the real elephant in the room is back up and archival).  Individual drives aren't going to support much more than compressed formats.  This isn't something you're going to effectively build internally and never has been.  Internal arrays of a couple drives aren't really meant for, or ideal, for this.   So this begs the question, should you even be going 4K?  Odds are the realistic answer is "no" and so you're creating problems for yourself that already have solutions for those that actually need it, which is almost nobody except big event, commercial, theatrical.  Regardless of what the churn in consumerism tells you you need.     hint: maybe one in ten, if that, blockbusters you've ever seen has been finished at anything but 2K.  Sony and the rest are lying to you.

  8. I really like that you almost always write exactly what I think. I hope very much that Black Magic 4k will prove to be really true and good.

  9. Everyone seems to be pre-occupied bickering over youtube videos so I did some digging and one thing I found is that the GH3 incorporates 8x8 and 4x4 pixel macroblocks into all of their their Intra and Inter frame compressions where as the GH1 and GH2 only used 4x4 on everything.     As I understand it, this helps the GH3 be more efficient with bandwidth and supposedly helps retain fine detail areas, so if this was carried over then the G6 should have the potential of slightly better details than the GH2.

  10. The starting lens I was thinking for the BM Pocket was this one: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/835398-REG/Olympus_V314040BU000_12_50mm_f_3_5_6_3_ED_M_Zuiko.html Any comments for or against it? Anything close/better in price and/or quality to recommend? Not in S16, but in plain 16, perhaps one of the best deals in lenses was the Angenieux 9.5-57mm. I think someone did try it in the Panasonic GH2, but I'm not sure if people are using it.
