  2. Thoughts: Of the Pocket we know only two videos today, one the vimeo upload of an ungraded ProRes-edit, looking way too flat to an unexperienced eye like mine. The second the graded version, with some shots of seemingly very good dynamic range, others that still look somewhat washed out. I never liked the colors of Brawley, but others did really cool things with the 2,5k BMCC. I am sure of one thing: The Pocket is the camera for the best colors, but you need to have 'an eye', experience with grading and preferably the free Resolve Lite. I learned it just now, with the aide of Ripple, which I recommend by the way.    I believe that if someone not familiar with the niceties of grading can produce good colors with the Pocket, it is with this great software. But many will fail, because it really isn't painting by numbers.   In the video, we see another aspect of which I am unsure how to interpret it: Low resolution. Grant Petty of BM stated, the Pocket wasn't as sharp as the BMCC. On the other hand, we see handheld shots, which can cause the LFR-video to be smeared by motion blur. I really would like to see some expert footage.   Other than that, I instantly fell in love with that little device. I WANT it. But I don't know how or if it fits to the Lumix's.   Because with them, you have to expose more accurately, you have to watch out for banding artifacts and find a proper white balance, regardless of your intention to color correct and grade extensively. The G6 can obviously complement the GH2 or the other way around. It adds 1080 @ 50/60p, the image apparently has as many advantages as it has disadvantages. For the image alone there would imho be no need to change the camera.

  3. For some reason I was locked out of my account. Not sure why. I am AdamCinema.   Anyways, I buckled down and rented an Iscorama 35mm and 50mm. Really nice little kit, and I shot my entire senior thesis with this lens.    The kit came with 4 diopters and an Achromat in addition to the lenses. I really wish I had, had the money to buy it after I rented it. Here are some stills from the film.

  4. Like to share this short film which is part of a larger project. Shot with GH3, slrmagic 35mm and Kowa 8Z. https://vimeo.com/65543988

  5. Andrew, aesthetic considerations aside, do you know if and which hack he used? His anamorphic setup? His workflow? You know, all the juicy techy stuff we love to know.

  6. Yeah, that's what I was thinking. When I applied a little sharpening on the city screenshot earlier I was able to pretty much match the GH2 detail on the G6 shot. And like Julian shows it looks like -2 is indeed the sweet spot! Thanks a lot for these tests, Julian. This is quite reassuring, I think I'm getting a G6 now. :)

  7.   ...which in the case of this story, the camera made the movie look like it could have been shot on equipment almost none of us could afford on our own.   If this movie was shot on an iPhone it would probably still work to a certain extent, but it wouldn't have looked anywhere near as good.

  8. Good for Shane. And us, as audience and filmmakers. A rising tide floats all our boats.

  9. Hi guy i wish to know your point of view i have the gh2 and i need the second camera for take more shot easily so.. the Gh3 i love the more cinemantic look than gh2 so can should be new first camera and take the gh2 for second... The G6 very low price and the video is not bad.. Bmpcc i dont really understand if is very good or not a lot of great features but need to touch in my hand...   So suggestion?? or  i miss some really cool camera ?    let me know!

  10. BMPCC would become your primary camera if you bought one, both because the quality will destroy anything you've worked with before, and because it requires a lot more work in post and a lot more storage space. G6.should most closely match the GH2, since it uses the same sensor. It has improved image processing over the GH2 and some nice new features. It's also the cheapest. GH3 is a good camera if you want to shoot stills with your GH2 lens collection while having a nice video camera. It's better in low light and high iso. It's also the most expensive of the three camera bodies.

  12. Thanks Julian.   If you do another test please can you try -2 sharpness and contrast in the middle on both cameras?   G6 is certainly softer but I think that is due to the image processing applying less sharpening than the one on the GH2.

  13. I'm going to introduce an updated design for the forums.   Just a quick question -   Which do you prefer, white (or light grey) text on black, or black on white as now?

    New forum design, a poll

I'd make the screening room pitch black. I once worked in a very big cinema, it had black seats, black walls and a black velvet mask around the screen. It also had a steep, amphitheater-like audtitorium. When the lights went down, it was almost like 'I count to ten, you open your eyes and you are in ... '- wherever the film took you. I'd leave the main forum black on white. Why? I'm not sure why. I just think about it now. I had a DVX 100 once, but seldom visited the DVX user forum then.

    New forum design, a poll

Dark with bright text so it doesn't hurt my eyes at 6am ;-;   Or better yet just give us an option of both?

  16. Thanks guys!  The film has already won best of festival awards and Best Short awards at two festivals....and its not even in its final cut.  We just rendered the final copy out today. Its total runtime is about 17 minutes, and it was shot entirely using an ISCO anamorphic set.    Heres some more stills from the film.

  17.   There's a thread on this very board with several diopter options big enough for the LA7200.  I'd likely find the diopter before buying the adapter though, to be safe, since you could turn right around and sell it for a profit if need be and the Panasonic anamorphic being more common.  I made sure I'd acquired a Tokina achromat before pulling the trigger on my Century Optics adapter.   The Century Optics can be plenty sharp wider than f/5.6 without the Tokina doublet, depending on where you need to focus and your taking lens.  Even with the cheap-o kit lens it's better than merely acceptably sharp at ~f/4 throughout the focus range at wider angles (18-24mm for sure).  On a GH2 at least.

  18. I'm on a free Vimeo account, so only 720p there, but I agree the compression on Youtube sucks. Probably will shoot some more stuff tomorrow. I'll try to upload some original clips via wetransfer.

  19. Julian, can you upload to Vimeo or something? YouTube is very bad for judging image quality due to the compression.   G6 is looking good.

  20. Hello! As a student currently learning about imaging, I think the best RAW start up camera would be the Pocket camera. (I have past experience too, but handy-cams and after effects don't look too professional).   I am still confused on the best lens for it would be. I am interested in the look that a 24mm gives to a full frame sensor, but don't know how that compares to the crop factor (I heard it's 3x), and the fact that it's a super 16 sensor. It seems like it's basic math, but I'm unsure. Researching these forums, I see recommendations for this site: http://www.abelcine.com/fov/ but that doesn't answer my question. If I can figure out the basic math to my problem, I can choose the right lens to get the 24mm, 50mm, etc. look from a 35mm sensor.   Would I need a higher, 50mm lens, to get the wide angle look of 24mm, on this camera? Or would I need to go even lower, 8mm to get around a 24mm look?   Here's an example of the "look" I'm going for with my future Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera: http://www.pixel-peeper.com/lenses/?lens=567 That example is a 24mm (wide angle) lens, mostly on full frame cameras. The 3rd image catches my eye in particular. I'm interested in wide angle for music video production. And yes, those are from a prime lenses, as they are the sharpest, I want the most clarity I can get, and do any distortion in post. Any help/advice would be appreciated. If I've made any mistakes in my research, PLEASE correct me.

  21. If anyone is interested in the Kinor 16mm camera lenses:http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/2529-kinor-16-for-the-bmpcc/?p=33404 I picked up the 6mm fisheye.. I have more that should be in any day now to test, as well.

  22. I know this is a C mount compatability list but is anyone interested in other cine lens options? I've got some old Arri ST lenses and a nice new adapter from Metabones that I'll be trying in the next few days. Should I post results here or keep this one to C mount lenses?
