BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
nahua and one other reacted to Sean Cunningham for a topic
Based on the stills I like the color better on the BMCC. Without processing the only shot I saw that was immediately more pleasing was the road with all the high frequency gravel (but you can't use either of these cameras without processing so what they're showing is a worst case scenario, representing a scene produced by someone who doesn't know what they're doing). I've dealt with that kind of moire on the 7D and it's no big deal, while still retaining full luminance resolution. The flesh tones on the instructor in the dojo were better on the BMCC. In fact, even though he's smaller in frame, in the BMCC example, more flesh detail, not just tonality, is visible in and near the highlight area than in the 5D footage. They even conclude this. Here's the catch with the moire though: you only have to effectively filter color and because the BMCC isn't recording sub-sampled color but a full sample, once filtered you're not far from the 5DmkIII's color fidelity recorded with the hack. edit: but please, don't get me wrong, I'm not implying this isn't great or exciting information. It's fantastic for people who already own a 5D mkIII (and potentially most other model owners). I reject the idea that it represents the best choice available for new camera purchase decisions. Nothing to date suggests that's a rational conclusion. There are no deal breakers or makers here apart from fixation on an individual aspect while ignoring a host of caveats.2 points -

Really? I don't see it like that at all, or are you just speaking you've put them out of your mind as a purchase option? I don't see this being any sort of BMD Pocket Camera threat. Someone with $1000 to spend isn't in the same market as a $3500 camera they can then hack. The Pocket Camera is going to be so versatile and useful in situations where this thing is not, they're not going to be able to keep them on the shelves. Likewise, if you didn't already own a 5DmkIII (like me) I don't see this as a definite better option for a new purchase. There are caveats to the BMD Production Camera that convince me the original BMCC is still a compelling choice in several ways. As much as I love the aesthetic of Full Frame I also know that I can get that look on a M4/3 camera with Voigtlander or SLR Magic glass (and in a truer raw too). Jello cancels each other out as they both have it. For projects where I'm a controlling producer as well as the shooter the potential for catastrophic failure that using a hack brings to the table doesn't scare me. I've been around this stuff well enough to know that potential is there in everything given the right circumstances. Still, there are other productions where this camera, however neat it just became, wouldn't even be up for discussion because it involves too many dollars of other people's money and I'd just be a for-hire above-the-line rather than one with veto power. This thing doesn't change how all those adjectives used to describe the 5D in "Bankai" form have already been said many a time about the existing BMCC footage. I've de-moired a whole movie's worth of 7D mush so that part doesn't scare me. Moire wasn't a deal breaker that prevented anyone from buying the Canon cameras they owned before a couple days ago. I see this as an amazing gift to everyone that already owns one of these cameras. As someone who doesn't, it's just really neat on a geeky level. I don't anticipate it affecting my future camera purchases, however.2 points -
Panasonic GH2 hacked Moon Trial 5 hack, shot in 1080p HBR mode 25 fps (~ 60Mbps) Standard profile -2-2-2-2 Panasonic 14-42mm kitlens, OIS on. Looks like there are some dropped frames in the GH2 footage, did use a Sandisk 95MB/s card though... Panasonic G6 AVCHD 1080p 25 fps (24Mbps) Standard profile -5-5-5-5 Panasonic 14-42mm kitlens, OIS on. Everything shot with the same fixed white balance at 1/50s, various apertures but same on both camera's at all times. My first impressions: The G6 looks better to me. Better shadow detail and a bit more detail in the highlights. Probably due to flatter picture. The G6 shares the picture styles with the GH3, so no smooth like on the GH2. Kept both camera's on standard to keep it as close as possible. Everything dialed down maximum. Less noise at high iso's, less banding. Couldn't detect any moire. Looks a tad less sharp than (hacked) GH2, but that could be up to the sharpening at -5. With some sharpening probably same detail level. Rolling shutter looks the same to me. Although the G6 is a bit smaller I actually prefer the grip to the GH2. It holds very nicely. The lcd is much much better. The color cast on the GH2 screen is horrible. The G6 looks pretty natural and true to the output. Funny thing: the viewfinder looks quite smaller to me.1 point

5D MKii: "Here, BMD 2.5K cam, I hand you... YOUR ASS!" (BMD cam falls to floor, battery depleted) BMD CAM: "Forgive me, sensei MKiii! (his moire-riddled high-school beard glitters in the hanami sunset) I foolishly thought I had outgrown you, but now I know there is always another fleshy trick in your festering loincloth.." 5D MKiii: (takes a step forward and throws open his gi) "AHHAHAHA! I always win because..." (crash zoom) "You can actually buy me in a shop"1 point

- (Please notice all the moire throughout this edit with the BMC footage) If you like a tiny(relative to full frame) sensor, moire and aliasing, terrible form-factor, limited internal battery, poor touch control and a hard-to-see lcd screen, the choice is clear, go with the BMC. The slight increase in resolution is moot when there's moire all over the place. Also, in lowlight the BMC stands zero chance up against the 5D3.1 point

BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
HurtinMinorKey reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
Exciting news for videographers, however my opinion is that a lot of us are going nuts for it far too early. I cant knock the work Magic Lantern do (very impressive) but all this talk of the Canon 5d Mk III being the new 'king of the game' seems a bit silly. My understanding is that there could be a very hungry RAW recording format working in the Mk III flawlessly. Its super cool because of its low light and full frame sensor, plus the loved up DSLR form factor. If it takes off then its awesome for those who have the time, resources and money to handle the huge lovely files and trust their camera won't melt into oblivion. If anything, this advancement will become overshadowed by other camera developments very quickly. At the moment, we have a Black Magic Pocket Camera that will shoot RAW and 1080p ProRes out of the box with no potential issues for very little money. If the ML development really does cause a disturbance, I would be least surprised if a company like Black Magic announced another cinema camera with higher frame rates, a better sensor etc.... then suddenly BANG. Everyone wants that! My point is, its a great development. Will i be buying into it? No - because I expect this will be history once an inevitable, 'proper' out-of-the-box advancement is available on the market with the benefits of the Mk III features, and more, with the peace of mind it won't break. I hope everybody does go nuts for this Mk III RAW thing. Just means we get better cameras in future. :)1 point -
This is actually a very good test and shows previous issues without raw then solved with raw. Cheers. https://vimeo.com/661478141 point

In reference to :vimeo.com/66170436 They crushed the blacks so it's not really a really a valid comparison of DR. The BMCC video has been shown to have more DR that 5D3 stills, so I'm not sure why they think the new 5D3 video hack would increase the 5D3 DR beyond its stills capabilities. (looking at the downloaded version) Consider: @ 1:15 (BMCC) you can see more detail in the wood background, and the highlights are not blown out on his face@ 1:23 (5D3) you can see slightly less detail in the wood and his forehead is over exposed. Looks like a clear DR advantage for the BMCC1 point -
I use 72mm B&W ND filters because that is the thread size on the end of my kowa, you can get them quite cheap in from B&H used in "like new" condition, they are slim and i've never had any trouble with artifacts. Don't go variable it will affect your IQ.1 point

I think Andrew is right about this eating into BlackMagic sales. I got the Pocket Camera pre-ordered, but I am rethinking that. A 5D Mark III is out of reach for me, still out of budget. But if a stable release of this firmware makes it onto the 5D Mark II or 6D, I'm probably cancelling my Pocket. Getting cheap glass for fullframe is actually easier than for the pocket. Want a 28/24mm wide angle? Just buy a cheap manual one.. A bright standard lens? Any 50mm f/1.4 will do. etc. Also I wouldn't have to buy the Speed Booster any more, so thats another $400/600. Might get a Panasonic G6 next to it, in case I don't want to deal with raw files, but I might even rethink that... and the 5D II / 6D are better still cams than the Pocket or the G6... Actually, I might just start calculating what selling my GH2, old 5D Mark I, canceling the BMPCC and forgetting about the Pana G6 might mean for the budget.. and a 5D3 is probably in reach. Magic Lantern should start selling camera badges. I don't want to buy a Canon... with their overpriced old tech. All the reason I want one now is because of ML. Canon looks better... no moire.1 point

Certainly not, it's just for the sensor size... I love the way the Epic lets you crop in more and go up in speed as you do. It's such a time saver! I'd like that option oin an SLR: get maximum use of may favorite lenses by making crops! ;)1 point
-
The raw video looks really, really impressive. The difference is so great compared with the factory video mode you really have to ask again, what did Canon have to do to make the default video so bad? It is not an accident. It is not the result of compression (because we now have an HDMI out). It is unlikely to be line-skipping, because the camera shows no moire or fringing. As I have suspected since the 5D mark III's release, it seems like they have deliberately softened up the image in the camera's firmware. I can't think of any other explanation.1 point
-
Also, a 16mm sized crop would be great. Full frame, 35mm and 16mm crop modes would give us the best of three worlds, leave no lens unused!1 point
-
So it's basically safety: if you get it really wrong with an even higher dynamic range sensor and have to push four stops, the Nikon is better. I suppose it's best not to get it four stops wrong!1 point

Stanley; you could buy a cheap 77mm UV filter (break the glass) or a 82mm-77mm step down ring, and solder this ring with some kind of 'holder' to a rod clamp. Or buy something like this: Superglue the Step down / emtpy UV filter to the top of the Lens Support. The height is adjustable :)1 point -
If this could be made fully reliable it'd make the 5D iii a great camera: you have standard mode for all your events and quick turnaround stuff, and RAW for your big projects. Ace! There does seem to be a lot of odd artifacts at the moment (those vertical lines in out of focus and distant areas, some very jagged edged and square noise) but I'm sure it can be sorted, they've done so much work already. I've used Magic Lantern a ton, donated way back in the day and have been spreading it like wildfire, I'm glad they just don't stop! One request would be: APSC/S35 crop mode. I have some old cinema glass that wasn't designed for 135 frame. Is this possible?1 point

Lens Test: Iscorama 36mc 1.5x
Paulio reacted to DuckDuckJohn for a topic
Greetings all, This is my first post here but I've lurked for quite some time, particularly in the anamorphic forum. I recently bought an Iscorama 36mc 1.5x anamorphic lens from another member here (QuickHitRecord) and wanted to share some of the results I've been getting. This lens has quickly become my favorite lens! A refreshing change from the perfect/sterile "Canon L glass look". http://vimeo.com/65643270 Camera: 75% Canon 5D Mark III (more towards the beginning) 25% Blackmagic Cinema Camera (more towards the end) Lenses: Vivitar 28mm 2.5 M42 mount + Iscorama 36mc 1.5x Iscorama 50mm 2.8 M42 mount + Iscorama 36mc 1.5x Canon 85 mm 1.2L + Iscorama 36mc 1.5x Adapters: Genus 77mm variable ND filter Polaroid 72mm Close-Up +1 filter (only on a few tighter shots toward the end.) More thoughts in the description on Vimeo. What do you think? Also, I don't know how first posts are supposed to go or what's considered cheesy but I just wanted to say I look forward to becoming a more active member of the community here. I hope to learn much and contribute where I can. John DuckDuck Collective1 point -

These guys have the DR down at 12.5 stops. http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/canon-5d-mkiii/canon-5d-mkiiiA5.HTM My eyes tell me this is about right. DXOmark works solely on signal to noise ratio, iirc, which doesn't tell the full story. Regardless,,, anyone who has ever used a Canon for still shots know that the DR is very good and all sorts of things can be boosted and pulled back, in post. Time to stop worrying about numbers and remember we have great, built in testing tools, OUR EYES!1 point -
Wow! seeing those graded shots was a real eye opener. G6 wins to my eyes. I'm really curious about the focus peaking. Would it be possible to shoot a video with the GH2 pointed at the back of the G6 while you pull focus?1 point

BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
blackrat reacted to Sean Cunningham for a topic
The sensor isn't doing any additional work. It's generating this information already. What's happening here is that work isn't being wasted, disappearing into the ether, it's being diverted to the CF. It's generating this image and then destroying it, in stock form. The sensor doesn't handle I/O. I would be really surprised if this isn't actually less work than the heavy lifting of even the crummy MP4 encoding it was doing on the fly, in stock form. It wouldn't shock me if the camera ran cooler. This is an I/O bound task more than a processor bound task.1 point -

I really need to get back to Berlin tomorrow and compare to the Blackmagic. I honesty think I prefer this image though. Blackmagic is great but this - wow - it is silky smooth, much cleaner detail, no false detail or micro moire, hardly any noise at all. And still early dev code!1 point -

I don't get the "and better" apart from the Full Frame aesthetic, something which already didn't convince me to buy a 5DmkII versus a GH2. It's not a better raw and it has, just going on spec sheets, a stop less DR. It's (5D) 14bit versus 12bit, but it's also 4:2:2 versus 4:4:4. The variable aspect ratio isn't interesting to me. Better low-light sensitivity, that is nice, I will agree there, raw or not I'm sure the 5D is going to be the best thing outside a Dragon to see into the shadows...but then so was the 5DmkII versus the GH2. Several of the reasons why I chose the GH2 over the 5DmkII are still valid comparing this new development and a BMCC. At least at this stage of the game, for me.1 point -

Because of the way ML has re-structured their code, There is no question that they are going to be pushing the FPS beyond 60fps. Look, if the 5D3 is able to do RAW at 3K, I would not be surprised if H.264 1080p@120fps is possible. The camera has already shown that it can handle huge loads.1 point

Magic Lantern - RAW and Anamorphic
nahua reacted to Tito Ferradans for a topic
It becomes EVEN MORE easily scalable since each frame has 240DPI resolution, while a regular RGB frame has only 72DPI. With this "extra" resolution, you can increase the image size without considerable loss of quality. :P As soon as I get this compiler working again, I'll write a RAW module with anamorphic options for both 1280 and 720 height, and various lenses (2x, 1.5x and 1.33x).1 point -
No need for introducing the Iscorama here... I thought that perhaps some of you might want to pixel peep and see exactly how sharp an Iscorama will be for future use at 4k, 8k etc. So, I am sharing some of the Nikon D800 36 megapixel (7.3K) stills I shot with the Iscorama attached to the Nikon 50mm AF-D f/1.4 and Nikon 85mm AI-S f/2, stopped down to around f/5 to f/8: http://we.tl/9dsQGS1GN7 These are the full .NEF raw files, works in newer versions of Lightroom & Photoshop. Keep in mind that wetransfer keeps the files available for 2 weeks only! Since they get shared on the web now, I guess you can do anything you want with these files / re-post etc, as long as noone else steals the credit for them :) Might be a nice thing to view for you who consider getting an Iscorama or wonder how well the sharpness holds on an Iscorama. It's not as supersharp as just the 50mm or 85mm lenses by themselves only - but in my opinion Iscorama would look lovely in 4k.1 point

Ratguity reacted to Dr. John R. Brinkley for a topic
I'm selling my GH3. I've only used it about 5 times, so it's practically brand new. It feels like a shame to already sell it considering I had high hopes of getting back into filmmaking but right now I just don't have time or a project in mind. I realized I didn't use it for shooting stills. I'd rather still just shoot a few rolls a year of Tri-X on my Nikon FM when the inspiration hits. And I want to get away from technical obsessions for the moment and focus on reading books and trying to get inspired with ideas for upcoming projects. Any by then, hopefully the BMPCC will (hopefully) be available. Anyway, more info than anyone needs to know. I live in San Antonio. If anyone is interested in the camera, send me a message and we can talk details. Thanks.1 point -
