1. I think those who are uninterested in this are primarily careerist secret spokesmen. Some more secret than others. This is a good site because it's run by someone who speaks their mind and has their heart in independent film. Bloggers giving "masterclasses" can suck a bag of dicks. Not one of them can get off moaning at the rest of us for testing to get good quality for cheap, most of them make films that flat out suck and only get watched because they're "the first film with X new Canon" and so on, so the hypocrisy among some of the glorified bloggers out there moaning about people testing and sharing info is startling. At least the people here share info, help each other out and take constructive criticism like grown ups, I can think of two very well known film bloggers who behave like pathetic brats whenever they're criticised or even questioned and expect everyone on their forum to personal worship every frame. They start with this "how dare you moan I give you this or free" crap Well yes, so does all of YouTube and Vimeo, what makes these guys special? I recently had a load of Vimeo comments deleted for suggesting that the title of a tutorial film by a well-known DSLR "tutor" didn't match the content (which was more like an advert). I wasn't rude, I simply suggested that the defensive attitude was counter productive, and that after four comments relating to it from different people, renaming should be considered. The result: a childish rant in the description and deletion of every comment except worshipful praise. No grown-up style "yes that's a good idea, I'll consider it" or "I can see why you'd think that, but I prefer to stick with this". Nope, it was back to the playground. It's sad really. These people are pretty much bitter also rans. I don't mind also rans, it's what most of us become, but the bitter ones? They can leave...

  2. The Speed Booster for Micro Four Thirds gives cameras like the Panasonic GH2, GH3 and Blackmagic Cinema Camera a Super 35mm / APS-C sized sensor using clever optics, in the same way that the E-mount version turned cameras like the Sony FS100 and NEX 7 into valid alternatives to full frame. As well as shrinking the image circle of a full frame lens to fit a smaller sensor, the Speed Booster lives up to its name by giving you a 1 stop increase in brightness so that F2.8 effectively becomes F2.0. I've been testing the Leica R mount version of the new Micro Four Thirds Speed Booster on the Panasonic GH3 and here are some of my early observations. Read the full article here

  3. I was trying to stay done with this thread and this topic but...I just had to say...I love you man. I haven't heard or seen anyone use that phrase in years. I missed it. edit: PS, you wanna get really annoyed? I saw in a thread on a GH2 facebook group that PB is ebaying a bunch of old gear at the moment and the stuff is going above MSRP, because he touched it I guess.

  4.   Yeah, just a few days ago Andrew was saying it would be highly unlikely that Canon's upcoming DSLR cameras would be capable of a 10 second raw burst, and now on the "old cameras" we have a 40 second limit when shooting continuous raw, and that's because of the file system, not the camera! :)   I've said this before, I'd rather pay for firmware upgrades that give us more functionality to an existing camera than buying new camera bodies every year. Mostly for environmental reasons, but this would also give Canon more time to work on the software side of things, instead of constantly developing new hardware, with small technological improvements, they could work on bringing the firmware to the next level.   This proves that could totally work, there's a lot to be milked out of a 3 or 4 years old camera if you have proper access to it, something that ML doesn't have. A lot of technology surrounding the camera evolves every year, such as card speeds, and features that weren't possible 2 or 3 years ago could now be implemented on that same hardware.

  5. All I keep thinking is "it's still easier than film" and "at least I don't have to use a Z1 anymore". That way I'm constantly happy! Just good news on good at the moment...

  6.   There was that ridiculous 1D C related run-in on Twitter we had. I've seen the dark side. I'm not surprised he is belittling raw and these latest developments.   There's various conspiracies as to why he bangs on about the Cinema EOS C300 so much. At Photokina he was being paid by Canon to speak about Cinema EOS. A conspriacist would link the two - paid by Canon - radio silence on other products. But I don't put much stock in that. I think it is just down to personal preferences and what his work requires. Philip sees image quality second and getting a job done first. He sees the commercial side, the practical side, more clearly than the artistic side. Raw is not for him. I don't think he understands the raw workflows that well and seems a bit intimidated by the whole thing.   How can one ignore the clearly exciting image quality of this camera for the price, whilst bemoaning the large files and huge interest in the hack? Totally bizarre. Not even a blog post.

  8.   It absolutely is the principle of the BBL.  The DI implementation is a means to achieve an approximation of a look that used to be done totally in-camera.  And while I don't know that they invented it, the pre-DI body of work from both Ridley and Tony Scott is filled with the the orange and blue palette that is practically synonymous with the BBL.    The basis of the DI BBL is warm light on talent, cold light in the background, which affects shadow color.           ...besides the whole complementary aspect, even going back to the Old Masters paintings, the eye moves from dark to light and, given a color scheme mixing cooler and warmer colors, from cool to warm.   The latest DI trend just gives it a hue-shift and does it in perhaps a more self-conscious way.

  9. Hi All,    Had some time to test this out at an informal event yesterday. Very impressed with what's possible. Workflow can be a nightmare for longer shoots. Here are my thoughts/unscientific tests:

  10.   Interesting you should think so.   David Slade told me, via Twitter, that (at least on the episodes he's directed of Hannibal so far) he felt the need to sharpen Alexa footage because 1920x1080 looked soft to him.  For budget and time they're shooting in its ProRes 444 mode to avoid external recording and the costs (time+money) associated.   But I see what you did there ;)

  11. ^Do those girls know you are watching them? Lol. But seriously amazing video. Would be nice shots from a horror movie. So nice and clear and sharp, can't believe this is coming from a dslr. Love how much detail you can see through the lighted window.

  12. More good news, my only issue with M4/3 was not being used to thinking in that sensor size. Well, that's gone! What a jolly good time to be shooting!

  13. And yet i still really enjoy his review videos... Let's not forget that he's has a much stronger preference for documentary style work, which makes the raw workflow even more cumbersome for him. So i can see why he isn't pooping his pants over the 5D or the BMCC. But at the end of the day he's pretty good at what he does. I'd take PB, in terms of skill, over Laforet or Shulburt.

  14.   5D3 has two card slots, you can have ML on an SD card and shoot on CF cards.

  15. Thats 8/3 = 2.66   1280x1080 with 2x scope =2560x1080,  then scale by 0.75 for a 810x1920   The vertical rez would go through the roof :)

  16. It struck me while I was writing about the Iscomorphot 8/2x that perhaps there is a better way to do this. If you have ever been to over to Personal-View, each piece of gear has its own thread and the initial post includes info, photos, and video clips. If someone creates a duplicate topic, Vitaliy redirects people and closes it. I think that what we need here is a sub-forum, similar to the way that 'GH2 Hack' is right now (maybe we can call the 'Anamorphic Directory' or something like that), and a dedicated moderator who can make sure that every known anamorphic lens has its own thread. Then forum members could update it with their own findings. It's all easily searchable, and it becomes a living, self-perpetuating database of anamorphic knowledge.

    RAW2DNG Error

OK I finally got it.  Not the directory has to have _ for spaces, but the volume name.  I'm using all different external HDD and they all have spaces for the names.  So I changed them and now it works.  Thanks Andrew so much easier now!!!  :-)

  19. Awesome tutorial. I'm up and running and making raw video on my 5dmkiii! Thank you for putting together this one-stop method for getting up fast.    The only missing link for  me, a Mac user, is converting the files into DNG. Is there a Mac option for this?

  20. I think a low-light test between the c300 and the hacked 5D would be fun.

  21.   I don't really think there's any use in trying to pigeon hole shooters into the 40 sec clip length genre, though I see what you're saying and it makes sense in a way.   I asked A1ex about this today.   He says file spanning is doable to overcome this, but it isn't yet top of their list of priorities.   It is coming please just be patient.

  22. There's definitely something wrong with your account JohnBarlow! I just tried to send you a message and there is no such option available! Anyway, if you can go to the folder containing the files (link below), feel free to create copies of any file and modify it according to the lenses you know/have available. Can you do that? If you can't find your way around google docs, just list here the ones you can write about, and I'll create their files for you. :) https://drive.google.com/#folders/0BzVcUB-5ReiZajVncE9rYU9heDQ From yesterday to now, I've added about 15 lenses, as detailed as I could. In the list view, all the files that have stars beside their name are complete. In the preview, the ones with pictures are complete. There are MANY lenses that don't have their files yet, but it's growing fast, I think. Please, ask other anamorphic shooters to collaborate. :P

    RAW2DNG Error

I found the problem was due to spaces in the folder name. Replaced spaces with _ and it worked.   I think a 2GB issue has also been mentioned, and fixed in latest raw2dng so make sure you get latest version.
