BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III

Turmoil! Disaster! Drama! Raw for free. What a hardship. Better image quality than a $15,000 camera on your $3000 DSLR and the first ever full frame camera to record uncompressed raw internally to compact flash card. FOR FREE. I don't call that turmoil I call it a miracle. You're trying to justify a preconceived purchasing decisions I'm afraid. The Blackmagic cameras whole selling point - ONLY selling point - was the image and raw workflow. Nobody bought a Blackmagic for the smaller sensor, heavy body, poor ergonomics and slipped delivery dates. We held out for the image. Now we have it in a DSLR, along with a ton of other important features - stills, better physical controls, HDMI, full frame sensor, low light performance and all else offered by Magic Lantern aside from raw like peaking, high frame rates, zebra, manual audio, etc. Magic Lantern is reliable. I can shoot all day at 1080p to my fastest CF cards without a hitch. Battery run times are similar to when shooting H.264! The rig is much lighter than my Blackmagic with external battery. I own both. I cannot for the life of me keeping the BMCC EF. Blackmagic still have unique selling points for me though. A) The Micro Four Thirds mount camera B) 4K and global shutter on the Production Camera C) Super 16mm sensor on the Pocket Cinema Camera D) Resolve 10 But as for the BMCC EF - it's been nice. It's been lovely. But show's over.2 points -
Canon 1D C vs 5D Mark III Raw (and C300 / GH2 resolution comparison)
Richard Collins reacted to peederj for a topic
Of all the articles where you absolutely needed downloadable uncropped straight-from-camera files, this was the one. We are given no even vague idea what those thumbnails were created from. BTW the $5,500 C100 along with a $700 Ninja 2 uses the same sensor and a better codec than the C300.1 point -
That's a lovely film isn't it? I assume it's a kind of prototype two-strip process? That or hand coloured... Personal gear wise, I've not bought another interchangeable lens camera since the 550D. I might swap it for the 600D. I have a lot of lenses though... I'm on the 4K BMD list but I'm thinking it might be an excessive expense, all told. This year I've used C300, FS700, Alexa and Epic on projects that weren't my own though. Having used the whole lot I'm still not that unhappy with the old 550D :) it definitely makes you work to get it right on set.1 point

Just checked, 1280x1080 works and the datarate should be safe. (around 53Mb/s). Don't have my anamorphics here, tomorrow I'll get to shoot!1 point -

Everything changes so fast now, and I'm starting to know so many people who own better kit than me, I think I may cancel my BMD preorder and just start borrowing gear again (aside from my lenses). It's getting hard to keep up...1 point -
Here it is. It's lighter than some SLRs because it's such hollow plastic. The batteries are like 8 inches long. We have it so good nowadays...1 point

JohnBarlow reacted to Julian for a topic
Tomorrow I'm going to try what's possible with a friends 5D2 and 2x and 1.5x anamorphics. Hope to be able to shoot 1280x1080 so I can get 2560x1080!1 point -
The impact of 5D Mark III raw and what does Vincent Laforet think of it?

I actually bought a Panasonic shoulder-mount full-size VHS camcorder last year for a video. Well hipster.1 point -

They probably put the lag in there on purpose so you'd find the C300 more attractive.1 point -
BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III
mtheory reacted to Sean Cunningham for a topic
Well, it was graded. People uploading flat looking "raw" files that look no better than ungraded normal DSLR footage proves nothing either. The thing is, why doubt the shadow detail knowing this is 5D footage? It's pretty clean well above 800ISO and this would have been like 200 max maybe. Its DR is skewed to the lower end. It's already a done deal that the BMCC has a DR advantage, at every stage from capture to bits hitting disc, but its own DR is skewed to the high end.1 point -
BIG NEWS - Hands on with CONTINUOUS raw recording on Canon 5D Mark III

I for one will be waiting in the wings with my trusty GH2 until the dust settles. This RAW camera turmoil isn't over by a long shot. I personally doubt it will seriously hurt Blackmagic in its current form. The truth is, the Blackmagic cameras and Canon cameras are completely different animals in more ways than just the codec. Add on top of that the fact that the Blackmagic cameras are purpose-built for RAW right out of the box, and it really is hard to say they'll take a hit from this. If faster CF cards come out and MagicLantern can really get this nailed down and reliable, then maybe. But even then, it is a modification-type solution, not a purpose-built RAW camera. There's something very appealing about recording straight to SSD. There's something very, very appealing about global shutter. And on top of that, full frame photographic is not an industry standard and will not play very nice with most cinema glass . . . whereas the Blackmagic 4K cam certainly will. I'm not saying that what MagicLantern has done is not significant, it is. But when something is this amazing for free, a better solution will probably show up as a product soon after. In my book, Blackmagic are slowly moving into prime position to deliver a true knockout hit. Sony could certainly do the same tech-wise, but they price too high. What MagicLantern has proved is that Canon could tech-wise as well, though they either weren't smart enough to implement this or were unwilling to do so for some reason. So I'm going to sit tight and see how it plays out. Sooner or later a real pro-quality and full-featured cinema RAW camera will be available from one of these companies. Until then, I'm going with the GH2. It was and still is very inexpensive, yet perfectly capable in the right hands, as many of these cameras are. But I've become increasingly aware of other features besides RAW that are almost more beneficial, like built-in ND, XLR or similar pro audio inputs, Zebra, Peaking, and alternative aspect ratios (for anamorphic). Such things seem basic because they've been around for a while, but their benefit is not lessened by that.1 point -

Here's a short shot with the panasonic LA 7200 and 5D iii from a few years ago and it looks suprisinly good. I think. : Correction : It was shot with 5Diii not 5Dii . No magic Lantern . http://vimeo.com/52401060 [Edited by EOSHD - just paste Vimeo URL no need for embed code. Cheers]1 point

Adobe Camera Raw doesn't indicate the bit depth. In the lower part of the screen you see the workflow settings, it is probably at 8 bit by default. That is just the setting used to import the image into Photoshop. You can click it and change it to 16 bit. If you do, the converted raw will be opened as a 16 bit file in photoshop and you can export it to 16 bit tiff for example.1 point

i don´t really like the anamorphic lens. there is too much weakness for me, especial in the corners. the quality of the 5d mk raw is amazing but i prefer modern lenses which perform really god. i don´t need this nostalgic retro trash look...1 point

Found two lenses...

Out of pure curiosity I had a look at this forum's posts (I'm completely satisfied with the 16:9 standard.. sorry), and the huge lumps of glass reminded me of something I had seen in my own home. We live in an old cinema, and in the projector room I dug out these two anamorphs (jpg hopefully attached?). The pinkish one is american and has some sort of mirror system, the other is german, seems exceptionally well made, and is marked Cinemascope on the rear side. Both are mounted in heavy cast iron brackets. I'll be interested to hear if they have a market value, and would consider selling them if someone would have pleasure using them...
