DSLR communtity is full of too many people who are like sheep and only follow other peoples views they have no views of their own - do your own thing and break away from the crowd - do someting that cuts through the clutter - buy random stuff to test to see if it works for you - you dont need someone to tell you you have to buy something!! - its the only way to really try stuff and find kit that works for you!!3 points

What you're describing here is not the indie filmmaking community, it's a camera-gear-lust driven movement that has very little to do with filmmaking at all. Honestly, I don't think those video-blog-stars have much of an effect on indie filmmaking at all (unless you consider lame camera tests edited to copyrighted music with accompanying fancy titles "indie filmmaking"), if anything they have an effect on gear heads, but I don't see any serious filmmaker pointing them as their great influences anytime soon. Those indie filmmakers might even know who they are and may have seen a video or two when researching a camera, but most of these bloggers have little to offer (or at least have offered very little so far) when it comes to proper filmmaking advice on how to tell a good story and make a relevant film. Let's be honest here for once, regardless of how much we love the tech and wish for the dream camera to come along at a price we can afford, the choice of a camera for a narrative film is probably the least important element of its making, and as long as these people keep acting like it's the the only important factor, they will never represent "the indie filmmaking community".2 points

Biggest European dealer CVP 'in the dark' over new Blackmagic cameras
Lee Mullen reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It is mid-July and the new Blackmagic cameras - Pocket Cinema Camera and Production 4K Camera are due to ship imminently, which I am very much looking forward to. In anticipation I have been building up a collection of Super 16mm c-mount glass for my Pocket Cinema Camera. However in my inbox today was a frustrated sounding email from London's CVP titled 'When will I get my Blackmagic Cinema Camera? As last July, Blackmagic are unable to tell them when they will receive camera shipments and in what quantities. Panasonic G6 Review - the GH2 Redux
zephyrnoid reacted to xenogears for a topic
Is good to see the improvements of the G6 over the G5, but i think the Nikon D5200 still a better option in that price range (body only). D5200 over G6: -Low light performance. -APSC sensor -24Mbit -Live Hdmi output G6 over the D5200: -Size -1080p @60fps -Video assists (Peaking, Zebras) -$50 cheaper1 point -

Have tested the HDMI now. I'll update the review, and it ain't good news. There's no live HDMI output. Only in playback mode is the HDMI port active. Seems like a clear market segmentation to get professional filmmakers to use the GH3 instead. A little black mark on what is otherwise a stella achievement by Pana. Go easy on them because remember we're talking about a $650 body here with a superb built in monitor, peaking, very good focus assists and zebra. Much less bulky than an external monitor set up.1 point -

You are kidding me right? This is the least 'beta' camera in my entire collection. Ultra complete feature set for the price. No bugs.1 point -
Just avoid any setting that has "i" next to it lel (interlaced sucks). That leaves you with a 50p and 25p settings, both are great.. Use the 50p for slow motion and 25p for everything else.1 point

Today, in the BM forums, from their spoke person: "The team tells me that we are still on track to start shipping before the end of July. I'm not sure if there will be more of an official update than that within the next week, but for anyone in the LA area, we will have cameras at our event on Thursday if you want to check them out"1 point

for me its the work flow .....the G6 is producing stunning highly detailed images without all the ML RAW massive work flow to make it work OR the GH2 massive hacked file sizes that are huge - 1GB per minuite on mine G6 is massive detail with small file sizes - its a no brainer no fancy expensive card needed Im using a regular 32gb san disk extreme card this gives me 2 1/2 hrs of AVCHD 24p recording on a £25 card!!1 point

I reckon just do yo thing. The celebrity camera blogger thing is a bit embarrassing, my influences are film makers, when one of these guys makes something that isn't dull as dish water I'll eat my hat. Saying that will never affect my career, otherwise it'd be a career I wouldn't want, and I'd quit ;) Personally, I pretty much don't care what anyone else makes as when it comes to what I make, I make the films I wanna see, and talk to fellow film-makers for technical tips and watch movies for influence, and practice to get better. If what I make is out of fashion, fuck it. I'm not a banker, I don't work for numbers. I don't need to pretend one bit of gear is best or be loyal to one or change every five minutes. I need to find me i need to find my voice in vision, how i tell stories and light and compose, in how i make the viewer feel (the hardest thing to do). When I get a paid job and the client wants bread and butter I give it to them, but no one else ever sees it with my name attached. When it's my work I seek to be unafraid, and to blend my influence and my own expression into something new. Most of those who worship are just lacking in confidence. They imagine that sucking virtual c**k will get them some kinda giant career step. It's teenage fantasy. The greatest teachers are films themselves, or the quiet, smart people who know lots and just get on with it. Blustering pseudo celebs who self-aggrandise but produce bland plastic work will be remembered for what they are: salesmen. There's a whole scene of "I'm better than you because X" in film and music and everything creative. I'm always annoyed the kind of clean cut guys who have all the technical kit, love talking about permissions and rules and licenses and so on because it makes them feel part of something special, but then produce bland dross. Unsurprisingly they always moan about kit being cheap and kids being able to create, because they're scared that meritocracy might actually arise. The classic dude with his Canon 1D with L lenses and Zacuto rig (and more money than sense), but no ideas, sniffing at kids with 550Ds. Meanwhile a big chunk of A Field In England was shot with a rented C300 and a lens cap with a hole in it. My goal is, in every way, to always be the opposite to that kind of "exclusive club" film-maker in my personal work. I've even pulled it off on paid jobs, you just need the right client. This weekend I have some stuff screening on a stage backdrop at Secret Garden Party, all shot on 600D. It cost me 12 quid in materials and I used one lens. The world is full of people actually doing creative stuff. The internet, however, appears to crammed full of digital "id" (in the Freudian sense) and adverts. Too many people expect to become great or learn lots just by sucking up to a blog or copying an "accesible" online "celebrity". What they need to do is find real selfless teachers (there are some online), and to go out and make what they see in their head a reality. Use the cheap kit to break boundaries, work with what they have, not aspire to the next more expensive model. Tell stories, shoot footage, learn rules, break rules. Find their own path... I'm rambling now, but you get the idea. The truth will out, and the cream will rise...1 point

You make promises like this, you anticipate the demand for the product based on the last BMCC sales, you build your company to that scale. If they don't have a PR team that is their fault, they have the money and the sales to sustain that kind of growth and they have yet to do so. You don't seem to understand that this is how companies fail. This is also the internet age, where you can get a HUGE feel for the demand of the product by simply surfing forums for christ sake. You do not remain small as a company and throw out promises that would require a business of a much larger scale to accomplish. It is perfectly justifiable to get angry at this, it is nothing short of shitty business practice. It is entirely their fault that they set deadlines (deathlines), and unfortunately for them their product has shown the demand for these kinds of cameras at this price. If they continue to produce at such a slow pathetic rate, they are only extending the window for a new company to come in and exploit the market and do it with consumer-demand in mind. They can either: A.) Remain small and stop promising huge productions and ridiculous deadlines or B.) Restructure and expand their company to sustain the demand for this product or C.) Burn to the ground & watch someone else come along and do it better. I was unaware that being the moderator and owner of a forum puts you on a pedestal where your rights to argue in discussions are no longer allowed. You seem to be holding him to some sort of robotic standard.1 point -

I emailed B&H today asking about the status of the Pocket camera and where I was in the pre-order line. Here's the exact email: Here is their response (my emphasis): Disappointing, to say the least. I agree that if they are late again, they will be nothing short of a laughingstock in my mind. It's completely unacceptable. I think we were all very surprised to hear them announce a July shipping date in the first place, but we figured, well, they must be very serious this time, surely they wouldn't allow themselves to even come close to repeating the debacle of the BMCC? Short of a very thorough and apologetic explanation, failing to ship in July will just make it look like they have a corporate policy of deception and enjoy lying through their teeth to their customers, especially since that they were (at least publicly) so sure it would be shipping in July less than a month ago. Meanwhile, I am hearing that samples that have been sent out to John Brawley and the New Zealand guy above do not even have RAW functionality yet, and that this may be coming in a "future firmware upgrade." If they end up shipping the camera without RAW recording ability, I will be even more shocked and angry than if it ships late. I put $1000 down for this camera for its RAW ability, as nice as the ProRes footage may be, and failing to ship with such a significant advertised feature will be nothing short of false advertising.1 point -

You're right about judging the BM team too early. I must admit I'm a bit irritated that their website says that the Pocket will record raw where they say in interviews that this has not been tested yet and that it may come in a future firmware update, etc. Now, this is fresh news from Digital Bolex : http://www.digitalbolex.com/getting_ready/ Basically, they're about to ship their first batch. I don't want to start at BMPocket vs Digital Bolex D16 thread, as I think they are different tools anyway. But it's good to see the D16 being almost ready for assembling where some people have been talking of "vapourware".1 point -

I find it unethical and a lack of respect to tell people "we'll deliver for sure at that date" and then leave customers in the void. I don't understand potential customers saying "yeah, but for what they offer, I'm OK to wait 6+ months". Is the concept of telling the truth that outdated?1 point -

If ever somebody had good intentions, it's Blackmagic. B&H has an arrival date in bold red: "Expected availability July 25, 2013"... <_< Though I'm sure that number could be anything from 1 to whatever... Blackmagic is doing an event that day as well however, where they'll have all the cameras, actual "footage" (4k footage anyone?), various cinematographers, etc. on display... Sounds like CVP are nipping negativity in the bud now and who can blame them.1 point
