  1. Would people be happier with Apple's policy? Not tell anyone anything until the units are in the store?

  2. peederj: Wow. That was tremendously helpful. I think it will take a me a little time to unpack and research/try all of that. Greatly appreciated!

  3. For all three videos, I just used the 10-30 kit lens. It seemed to work fine, until it got even somewhat dark. The thing crumbles at dusk. So much noise is added and it won't focus at all. It'll lock in the focus fast, and seem correct, but then later when you see the pictures on your computer they'll be incredibly out of focus. Yeah it is kind of rough trying to make videos that are paced well with the v1. Before I edit anything I have to twixtor every single burst out to around 3 seconds (this takes days). I then take a couple hundred of those files and try to edit them together. 3 seconds seems to be the sweet spot, any longer and twixtor seems like it doesn't work as well. It is pretty jolting sometimes.

  4. Why can't they just add the active mount to the existing BMCC MFT?  I really want the electronic focus rack that the GH3 has.  Yes I know, buy a GH3.

  5. No independent film maker has used this camera in its final version so we can not judge. I am personally waiting to download and grade some footage before any decision or judgment. The rest is just guessing. After using the 5d MKIII in raw my expectations are very high. The bar has risen. The only thing I am sure about is the ergonomics that should be much more improved.

  9.   Thank you very much for your prompt reportage and refreshing candor. I am disappointed but not surprised about the BMD4K output being worse than the BMCC, this sentiment coming from Brawley as well is the nail in that coffin. They will hold the product for the rest of the year trying to rectify that (perhaps abandoning global shutter) but I'm going to wager now that it's killed by the spring. I.e. no 4K camera from BMD for at least another year, until they can source a better sensor and one hopes create a more ergonomic casing.   I have no doubt the 5D3 has a better picture in more situations than the BMCC. I'm not even sure you need the RAW hack to get there.

  10.   What I was told today (from one of the dealers) is this:   Pocket camera is shipping is low quantities (i.e. less than 100 units, I was actually told about 10 at a time). The manufacturing is apparently happening in Singapore.    The same dealer told me that the BMCC is also still a slow trickle as well. He mentioned that even right now he doesn't have any in stock and the only way to get some in is to start calling their distributor and raise some stink to get them to move quicker. In all fairness, he did say that BM is not as much to blame as their distributors who sometimes tend to play favorites (i.e. prioritize bigger dealers like B&H vs. some of the smaller dealers).   His opinion is that the BMCC's image quality is likely to outperform the new 4K camera, he also feels that the data management will be an even greater issue since 4K footage (at the Pro Res file size) is still quite huge.   FWIW, I recently ran a test on the Alexa, the BMCC and the 5D3 (video coming soon), and even though I feel that the Alexa produces an amazing image, the 5D3 raw was IMHO a much better image than what I was able to get out of the BMCC.    Either way, these are very exciting times!!!

  11. Some lingo for you: In R&D, "two weeks" equals "we know the issues but don't know how long it will take to fix them." "Three weeks" means "we don't know all the issues and god-only-knows how long it will be." A hard shipping date means R&D is complete and has released to production.
