Blackmagic price drop by a third on Cinema Camera and active mount mFT camera on the way
Shane Essary and 2 others reacted to peederj for a topic
Well I hope everyone is creatively fulfilled. And my recommendation for that is...drumroll please... Shoot with what you have. Quit buying stuff. Borrow or rent as needed. I think if you're a creative genius but under-equipped people will see through the limits of your equipment and solve those problems for you. It doesn't matter if you're poor...it does matter if you have no talent or can't bring yourself to use and develop what you have. If you are suffering from Gear Acquisition Syndrome you will never, I promise, never be satisfied enough with your equipment to decide now you are finally ready to be seen and judged. Go ahead and be seen and judged with whatever's at hand. Get used to it. Thicken that skin. See how lame you are...not your camera, but you as a creative artist...and fix that. The camera is the easiest thing to fix. Your mental blocks and your inexperience making art are the things that need to be fixed. If someone came to me and said they want to be a filmmaker I would hand them an RX100 with a small pistol grip and a removable ND filter and tell them to go out and make something. Go ahead and use the auto everything mode if they want. Or they could use an iPhone and a $13 collapsible 5-color reflector. And by stripping away all other concerns they would be trained to focus on what matters in art, and be able to do the maximum number of iterations per year creating things, because they weren't wasting time transcoding crap in Resolve. No one in the audience cares about your camera. Boo hoo. Fellow camera enthusiasts are not a meaningful audience. Pick something easy and use it. A lot.3 points -
Selling ultra rare ISCO ISCORAMA Lens $4,000
nahua and one other reacted to Rob Bannister for a topic
Im sorry you have to expect this, that is a rediculous starting price for that lens, reminds me of the rollie version thats been on ebay close to a year or more. I wouldn't expect to sell that anytime soon. I paid close to 3k for mine and it came with like 2 sets of diopters and the holy grail Tokina +0.4 and that was earlier this year.2 points -
GH3 laggy live view ?
Ratguity reacted to anchoricex for a topic
Just got my GH3. I noticed when I have my Panasonic 7-14mm on and I'm looking at the live view from the OLED touch-screen, it's kind of laggy depending on where I'm pointing the camera. For what ever reason when it's pointed at most places in my room the feed is really choppy, but when I point it at my window it feels like I'm watching a 60fps movie. Is this normal ?1 point -
Bolex anamorphic & Magic Lantern raw.
Francisco Rios reacted to OzNimbus for a topic
Hey gang, Got a couple of clips for you.... I've been putting my Canon 50D through it's paces with the Bolex 8/19/1.5 anamorphic. It teams up real well with a Nikon 50mm f1.8 lens. My only gripe is that there is no articulating screen! Makes dual focus tripod shots in bright sunlight a total pain in the ass. Second test: https://vimeo.com/71696516 First test: sorry for the handheld. https://vimeo.com/716056351 point -
First ProRes files from the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera released
Francisco Rios reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
There's two ways of looking at it. Would you prefer to see a more marketing orientated eye-candy shoot, or just honest snaps on the street? If you look at the recent Dragon test, that had a hell of a lot of effort put into it and looks incredible but to be honest it was just TOO good. Too good for Vimeo, too good for 1080p, and no frame of reference to compare it to. So I don't mind that John has put these very basically shot real world clips out at all. The screen grab you posted above is badly compressed, badly graded (too much magenta, steep roll off in the blacks and highlights). It doesn't do it justice. Sorry!1 point -

I downloaded from here (last three files). Graded it, sharpened it, watched it critically. My verdict: > How on earth can you NOT use a tripod, when you know the whole world waits for your shots ??? > The sharpness is quite, er, okay, but not with these lenses (because 90 % of the image is slightly and annoyingly out of focus!) EDIT: Maybe this is the downside of the sensor size. It had better been so small that it allowed absolute focus. Must probably be used with smaller apertures. > Definitely needs some sharpening. > What appear to be clipped walls are out-of-focus walls. > The distortion in the two wideangle shots is absolutely terrible! We really need to find decent lenses that also must have good focus controls. EDIT2: Dammit, doesn't this thing up til now look poorer than GH2 stuff? Do you actually see any better DR? What's going on?1 point

Panasonic G6 would be a perfect replacement for a 550D imho. Cheap, no moire. 1080p60, peaking, possibility to use cheap old lenses and / or a speed booster.1 point

Will you accept 8,000$ ?1 point

I have the full badass glidecam package. monitors, dual arms, vest, car mounts, etc... Everything depends on what shot / aesthetic your trying to achieve. For 5d3 I would use a 2x anamorphic with a 50mm, which = basically a 25mm. unless your shooting a skate video or going for a fisheye look, which doesn't even quite make sense with anamorphic, that should cover you. With an iscorama the 50mm will end up being close to a 33mm lens. That video you posted is another perfect example of someone that has no idea how to balance their glidecam correctly, and it is the biggest contributing factor to getting good results with these systems.. PM me dude, be glad to let you test out the rig, and show you how to properly balance these things. The pelican is currently sitting in my closet, I rather see someone get some use out of it. I'll try and post a video later if i have some time today..1 point

I'm pretty sure that example is contrived because it is comparing 1080 from the 5D to 2.5K scaled (not properly down sampled) to 1080 from the BMCC (which of course will show worse moire). I think i'll go shoot some pebbles and show you that this video is BS, because everyone cites it all the time and it's very misleading. But this is not surprising, since It's really just an advertisement for the 5D3, read the comments below the video: "If you buy a Canon 5D mark III, please get it HERE: goo.com/NoCredibility to reward our efforts" It also purports to show that the 5D has better DR, which contradicts their specifications, my personal experience, and almost all the footage i've seen on the interwebs.1 point

Mac vs pc debate is pathetic and then you commence to stoke the fire? My Opinion is simply that we all should choose the tools that fit our use and budget the best. I Buy equipment on my own dime, mainly to make material for the church I belong to. A camera like the bmcc will work great and I can't afford a fs700, alexa, Red, etc anyway.1 point

You can be creative on a paying job as well, but yeah - the creative filmmaking community for too long has been held hostage by the pro video community and their needs always get taken more seriously, because they make the most money. EOSHD seeks to associate itself more with the creative producers on a shoe-string budget than with the pro video community and their industry tools. I suggest both sides stop viewing each other with distain, realise their differences, and stops trying to ram one's own needs down each others throats, C100-luvva man especially.1 point

BMCC priced reduced to $1,955
Ratguity reacted to Ben Prater for a topic
Here is from the email newsletter Grant Petty just sent out: Blackmagic Cinema Camera Price Reduction We have worked very hard over the last year to be able to build the Blackmagic Cinema Camera at a lower cost so we can reduce the price and allow access to digital filming to a wide range of cinematographers and photographers. We have done it and from today the Blackmagic Cinema Camera EF and MFT models will be reduced in price to US$1,995. This is very exciting and is one of the proudest moments of my life to be able to do this! I think people will be able to use the savings to invest in some exciting lenses and rigs to really boost the creative possibilities. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is a fantastic design that's now well proven. The advantage of the 2.5K sensor is it has enough resolution to eliminate the bayer resolution loss of a HD sensor, but when shooting RAW it produces files that are too not to big to store and work with easily. It's a fantastic solution. All orders placed that have not yet been filled, can be reduced to the new lower price.1 point -
Hello everybody, First i would like to thanks this forum and Andrew Reid for the quality of the reviews. It really helped me a lot in learning photography, so i will not thank you enough for this. Regarding my topic, I'm a Visual Effect Artist starting a career in the industry in London. My main skills are in 3D (stereoscopic) post-production, and I'm establishing a new small studio for this particular tasks. Our budget is approx 10k-15k $, so i would like to ask to you guys, what do you think it will be the best buy for this kind of range? We need to buy at least 2 Camera (same type obv) and a Stereo Rig for future jobs. Red Scarlet is way too expensive at the moment, so what's about the new Blackmagic 4k Production Camera? Does 2x 5D MkIII will be a good bet for this kind of work or do we need to focus on something else? The main aspect concercing this choice is the quality of the image. Keep in mind that we need to work on shots in post too, not just grading, but putting in it a variety of digital Visual Effects (mainly with Nuke, Maya, After Effects). Thanks to all1 point

Holy crap.. I think I might stretch my budget for a BMCC and get the BMPCC down the track a bit. ALSO a firmware update coming for BMCC too - Details at end of post. You can now focus by pushing the focus button when using an active MFT lens. This makes it very easy to accurately focus. The focus peaking feature is still there and you enable it by double pressing the focus button. The focus zoom feature is enabled by double pressing the OK button. There will be an update for the 2.5K Blackmagic Cinema Camera soon that will also add these features, plus new de-bayer processing that will improve the cameras sharpness when shooting non RAW files."1 point

Best indoor mic for under $1,000?
Ratguity reacted to acuriousman for a topic
I'm going to get some serious gear soon and I have to upgrade my current shotgun. I'll be shooting a lot of interior shots in small to medium sized rooms. From what I've been told, a shotgun mic like the MKH 416 is terrible for indoors, correct? What's the best indoor mic for $1,000 and under?1 point -
Blackmagic 4K Production Camera 'now due in September'
Lee Mullen reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
If this is true, what on earth are they playing at? Surely they must have the ability to scale their production to demand. At a rate of 100 units per month there's a good chance it will take a year to go through the pre-orders and that is a VERY conservative estimate of 1000 pre-orders. I expect they had a lot more than that given the consumer pricing and attractiveness of the spec AND the temptation of people to keep the Pocket pre-order open whilst they cancel others, or even move their pre-order from a more expensive model to the Pocket. You can't ship such low quantities in this market, even in a niche part of it. Just doesn't work. Blackmagic need to give us proper answers on their production capacities and whether they can ramp up, otherwise all we're going to be lead to do is speculate that it might take a year for some people to their cameras and that isn't useful or constructive for Blackmagic.1 point
