5D3 RAW outresolves EPIC
Damphousse reacted to jgharding for a topic
Yes a friend of mine had that on a paid job with GH2, it crashed and lost a shot on a celeb interview and he had to start again :S so hacks are always a risk. But then he got the BMD and that physically broke on its first job! Poor fella... That's why I went to such lengths to stress test Tragic Lantern for 600D and gave my results in the Shoot Preparation section of their forum: i don't like losing shots. Personally I have a lot of faith in Magic Lantern as a group, so I feel they'll have a stable 5D iii raw after not too long. I too would feel happier if it were not a separate module but in the main feature list! We'll just have to wait for that I'm afraid, or risk it. If I wanted a BMD, I'd probably have to wait longer to get one! You can't record video to SD in 5D, only the Compact Flash, but yes your point is clear and true, that's not as good as an SSD for sustained raw use. The best solution I've thought of so far for 5D MKiii raw is a NexTo DI and two CF cards. You swap CF cards and dump them alternately to an SSD in the NexTo DI, which clones them to its drive. I've not yet tested it though. http://www.nextodi.com1 point -
Blackmagic 4k update?
mtheory reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
The story is: The production sensors to go in the final shipped units differed from the samples, so they had to start again with calibration. They are using this time to squeeze out a better image rather than rush it out. It isn't in development hell, just delayed. In my opinion I'd take dynamic range over resolution so this camera is not for me. Prefer the form factor of a DSLR or Pocket camera as well. However global shutter would be useful and you're getting a 4K Super 35mm sensor, for not much money.1 point -
I'd say neither is inferior. The 5D MKiii is a complete reliable piece of kit that can be hacked at own risk to shoot raw and have additional features. The BMD cameras are designed to shoot raw but are incomplete beta equipment, and cannot hacked to include additional features. There are no reports of ML raw bricking cameras yet, from reading the forum it seems unlikely to happen, it remains a possibility. Some clips do get lost due to formatting issues. The only person I know who owns a BMD m4/3 had it break on the first job, hardware failure, real life issues with BMD cams are very real and are being fixed as they go. But of course alpha firmware hacks like ML aren't exactly concrete coding either... Blind faith in either piece of kit is ill advised, each should be approached with the appropriate caveats considered.1 point

NICE GUY YOU ARE UNIQUE A SPECIAL AND RARE CUSTOMER. FOR MYSELF I HAVE HAD 48 UNIQUE CLAIMS SINCE XMAS. AND YET YOU SAY YOU ARE A VICTIM. I DO NOT RUN A BUSINESS IT IS A PAYPAL CLAIM JOKE OPERATION. ALL THE PEOPLE I SOLD STUFF AROUND THE WORLD TO. I PICK YOU TO RIP OFF LITTLE OLD YOU WHOEVER YOU ARE. I CHOOSE YOU TO RIP OFF AND RAPE. WHO ARE YOU THE PERP NEEDS TO NOSE. 2 LICKLE POSTS ON HERE JOINED JUST TO TRASH MAYBE. I CHOOSE YOU HOW UNLUCKY FOR YOU. DID YOU NOT PUT IN A CLAIM ON PAYPAL LIKE THE OTHER 40 ODD SCUM. OR NOT GOT AROUND TO IT YET. IF I GOT ABUSIVE MAYBE YOU DESERVED IT BUT MOST SCAMMERS GET THE GOODS AND MONIES BACK SO NO POINT IN CRYING A RIVER FELLA. A BIT OF ABUSIVE FOR FREE GOODS AND A CLAIM SOUNDS GOOD. IF I GET MAILS FROM FOLKS SAYIN NOT HERE YET NOT HERE I SAY WAIT LONGER. IF I DO NOT HERE BACK I ASSUME THEY GOT IT. IF YOUR FROM FINLAND OR RUSSIA,PORTUGAL OR SPAIN THOSE ARE THE PLACES THAT STEAL MY TIN OR PUT CLAIMS IN FOR RECEIVED ACHROMATIC DIOPTERS. TRY GATHERING YOUR REDSTAN RAPE VICTIMS TOGETHER AND IT WILL BE A VERY POOR LIMITED SHOW. FOR IT IS I WHO AM THE VICTIM HERE. I STILL DO HAVE CLAIMS OUTSTANDING SO UNLESS YOUR A SCOT OR A RUSSIAN THEY WILL NOT BE YOU. SINCE I HAVE KNOW IDEA WHO YOU ARE OR WHAT YOUR REAL PROBLEM IS I CANNOT BE NICE OR ABUSIVE TO YOUR SITUATION.1 point -
Yes but ML still classifies it under nightly builds which means they don't want any responsibility for bricked cameras and so could be unstable. Also many reports according to germy about problems with computer bay cards and Lexar 128gb costing £550 each. Could you really sensibly use this on a project you couldn't afford to mess up? So apart from look what I can do Risk takers and cat videos is it really any use apart from a tantalising look at what could be a fall from a great height?1 point

Yeah Epic starts to get noise one iso (EI)800 in my experience. Not unusable, just clearly noisy. The pattern is not as nice as Alexa. It also has an issue with magenta/green skin sometimes, and when it clips out things go magenta too. It seems to me that the movement is rendered in a different way. 5D looks less traditionally cinematic but more 'really there', almost like the frames are less distinct across time or something? Then again it reminds of the look of The Master, slightly hyper real, so maybe it's the sensor size that's responsible, since 5D sensor is so much bigger than S35? It's incredible what the 5D can do now, no more excuses from anyone eh ;)1 point

Camera threads always seem to get hostile.. It is a mathematical fact. I will say this: (and not to get off topic) ...I've been through - "3" - bmcc 2.5k cams in 4 months... Each replaced by BMD support.. each an acknowledged legitimate problem with the cam. My ego doesn't have enough in the bank to stand off if someone tells me the problem is operator error, so I'm all about a solution considering the shipping is $50 every time I send it to California.. But 3 in a row is either an issue in the Q.A. area, ...or really shitty luck. The first one had noise in the green channel so bad, all you could do is barely push it, much less add any post sharpening. The second had the back focus issue. My last one produced what looked like bad web compression on the rear display with blocky shadows and smeared details, & "rolling noise" waves that would roll up the scene in dark areas. (Truly a weird problem to have, but others had it also: http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12588) Yes the pocket cam is a different camera altogether of course, & I'm not bad mouthing BMD. Plenty of people have perfectly functional cameras from them. (just not me, lol.) In these early days of release however, I'm just saying if you get a Blackmagic camera, put it through its paces before your return window expires.. Make sure you get a good one while you can!... Even if it starts feeling like harassment. They're cheap, everybody wants one, and BMD have a delivery reputation to mend.1 point

Which Iscorama is this?
Chris Elkerton reacted to tony wilson for a topic
no romance just the intel for a make it up as you go along price scenario. no back story. no crusty history to bore the young folks who nose it all. just nuttin. hello my dad worked on the mk ultra brain erase program in the late 60s he has given me one of his retina projection optics it is called iscorama. dual squashed images where projected into each eyeball via face diopter googles with mini view screen attachments. cinemascope images of naked girls into one eyeball blood and guts ultra violence into the other. dad said he had hours of fun with this optic but ho hum it has gotta go. the lens has been cleaned of dried blood, spit and distemper and it is ready to go. anyone any idea which model this is ? my dad loved his job working on the cia operation gladio kill projects. but he told me to sell this sucker quick before the coming price collapse.1 point -
Correct shutter angle on BMPCC when filming at 23.98
Damphousse reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It depends what you're shooting and how, so there's no really any one particular ideal shutter angle. If you shoot handheld with a lot of movement, 90 will cut a lot of the blur. I sometimes find handheld work at 180 too soft. If you plan to use Twixtor for a slow-mo sequence, you ideally need 45 degrees at 30fps. Motion blur hurts Twixtor. If you're filming sports or action go for the higher shutter speed / narrower angle like 45 or 90. If you're doing a locked down sequence on a tripod with little movement, especially in low light, select 180. If you're really desperate for light and nothing is moving very fast at all, choose 360.1 point -

i a making 2 new screw adapters for the small isco 36 type one split in 2 parts so using one part you much closer optic to optic coupling. the other a very posh screw thread system that you can wind the 52mm thread in towards the isco or out towards the taking lens. you can change the optic to optic relationship difference in a pretty big range giving you super close distance or standard distance. quickly changing adapter position depending on your taking lens. you can also use this the adapter to change orientation another issue with old isco is the internal orientation system can get rough or difficult or sometimes uncouples over time1 point -
Sorry for loosing your 666 post status but good for the forum you post again. Interestring that you were searching the perfect 8mm anamorphic. Perfection is hard to find. For sure many of us are addicted to anamorphics. Searching, collecting, selling. It is not so easy to be happy with what you have. You own or have owned many anamorphics I think (Iscorama, Lomos...) Great that you found the full package now! :) I like the tiny Bolex Möller so much: Lightweight and very easy to use instead of double focussing. After one day of practice you can do some rack focussing as well. :wub:1 point
