I was debating gh3 or g6 after owning a gh2. I went with the g6 in the end as I think at some point next year i will upgrade to one of the future cameras (maybe gh4) so the g6 will see me through the next 6 months or so. I think the footage looks very similar off the 2 cameras so chose the g6 as over here in the UK its almost half the price. I like the camera and prefer the footage that comes off it to the gh2 (even when hacked) Over all i'm very happy with my choice and don't find the build quality too bad really. One of the reasons I went for the g6 was the focus peaking. I have never used it before getting the g6 and thought anything that aids focus would be a bonus. I have to say personally i'm not overly impressed with it. It doesn't alway show up and only seems to show on sharp edges which the subject you are filming might not have. Personal think having the higher resolution screen on the g6 is more of a focus aid than the peaking (over the gh2 that is) I think the 'Small HD' focus peaking looks much more usable than the style on the g6. Maybe i'm doing something wrong or there is a setting I have missed.1 point

It's wrong to blame market conditions for poor DSLR sales
Damphousse reacted to Julian for a topic
How big is the percentage of people that actually realise a Canon 550D is basically the same as a 700D? I think it's very small. That doesn't necessarily mean the economy is to blame, although it does make sense. People have less trust in the economy and that stops them from buying stuff, that's a fact. Also market saturation could play a big role. Average Joe who buys a dslr isn't going to upgrade anytime soon. You could blame this on lack of innovation, maybe if things really got better people would be tempted to buy, but then again.. the economy really doesn't help. It's not just the camera manufacturers that notice this, even the shops around the corner do. Thinking a 5D3 Mark III hack makes a big impact on sales is also naive... sorry. Yes, some people will buy it now because of it. The world isn't full of enthusiasts / indie filmmakers. On the grand scheme that really isn't going to make a big difference. Not defending the manufacturers here, but we're talking mass market here. 8 million camera's. The percentage of nerds like us is just a small part of that.1 point -

Are anamorphic's days numbered?
Lucian reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
I've also found that you can get some strange effects when using an anamorphic, which you just will never be able to replicate with a spherical lens. But in the end there are just as many good films shot with spherical lenses, as there are with anamorphics - its an aesthetic thing, not a necessity. Oh, the horizontal flares are certainly not the reason i love shooting anamorphic, in fact i've spoiled some lovely shots with them & more often than not they look tacky or forced. Each to their own, if you don't get it, don't worry about it!1 point -
I cannot for the life of me understand why the words 'cinema' and 'iphone screen' are being used in the same sentences in this topic. Anyone who deems watching a movie on an iphone screen as acceptable isn't going to notice the difference anyway. When I go to the cinema I like to see the curtains widen just before the switch from the shitty 16:9 projector used for trailers, to the proper projector with some curved glass o nthe front.1 point

I second the "having options" thing. It is nice to have multiple sets if you can. I also second that Zeiss zooms are brilliant, and also that F4 is a pretty good standard shoot aperture for APSC/Super35, and 5.6 for 5D style full frame, both roughly. Open up if you need to, for the light or the effect, but shoting wide open at 1.4 all the time is a bit of an affectation and makes a lot of work all round!1 point

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera, anamorphic lens.
roccoforte reacted to tommykristensen for a topic
Well, both are amazing shots. Loved the Salton Sea video - especially the scenes with the old battered tube-tv and the last one - with the Heron? The isco's are also fine, not as sharp as you mention. The one with the door is really great.1 point -
also I am known to bang on about this lens the Carl Zeiss 80mm f2.8 Biometar in Pentacon 6 mount is a simply superb lens Mine is a 1963 version and the sharpest lens I own , superb for portraits and its a great feel to the image it renders, zeiss glass again everytime I have to shoot a face close up I use this lens .1 point

Consumer DSLRs "dead in 5 years"
gloopglop reacted to luminescence for a topic
Very interesting article, however from my current viewpoint in Thailand, it seems that these big manufacturers might be making up their shortfalls in Asia. The amount of Chinese tourists sporting semi pro and pro Canons and Nikons is mind-boggling. Three or four thousand dollar cameras dangling around their necks. The new money in China must regard these big ass cameras as some sort of status symbol. The local cafes see them all sporting iphones and tablets , but unlike other areas in the world, you see them actually using the big cameras. Maybe its a passing fad, maybe not - maybe a whole stream of photographic creativity will emerge from Asia in the next ten years. I also noticed at a local shopping centre that Nikon was doing a big promotion for advanced DSLR's to a packed audience of local Thais and Chinese.1 point -
I don't understand, are you trying to make my decisions harder or easier? ;) Gh3 is a great deal for the money. G6 is not a whole lot different. But it has peaking and cleaner moire/aliasing. GH3 has audio and higher bitrates and build quality. G6 is compatible with my GH2 accessories (batteries, etc). GH3 has more wide spread support (popularity, other accessories, etc). ::head explosion:: Andrew, we need a Non-RAW shootout! D5200, G6, GH3, heck throw in some Sony RX and whatever you have laying around that takes good quality without a crazy workflow and and unmanageable amounts of storage!1 point
