  1. Yeah, I saw that one too. Pretty impressive but, again, whilst its cheap in comparison to the Movi, I still feel there is a premium being thrown on to it because of that. As for the one on ebay....I'm proposing 20 of us throw £20 each in to buy one and get Andrew to run round Berlin with it for a few days to give us the verdict!

  2. True the D5300 isn't great ergonomically. Not being able to change the aperture in live view is a pain. Not many dedicated buttons either. ISO for example requires you to program it to a function key and then press the key AND rotate the dial to change. Archaic. I am sure Nikon stills shooters are used to this kind of thing but I just find it a pain.   Watch out for a shootout on EOSHD tomorrow...   GM1, GH3, G6, D5200, Blackmagic Pocket, RX100M2 all in it head to head. It will surprise you.

  3. Shot on Alexa with 50mm Panavision C-Series @ stops between 1.4-2.8 with almost no second takes, so some of this is focus-pulling from the gods.

New Nikon D5300 with Expeed 4

Pretty sure the GH3 won't give such nice colours in low light. Not sure about the G6 - it's colours are good but probably not the same as the 52/5300. The 52/5300 is certainly better than the BMPCC at colours in low light (the BM might give very little noise with the speed booster but it sure looks dull as hell). In colour terms I'm sure the 5300 will be exactly the same as the 5200 (though a Ninja may change that) - I really think the 5200 will be fine as a stand-in for the 5300 in Andrew's tests on all fronts. I'm pretty sure it's the same sensor. Just ignore any comments about banding. This is my thinking at the moment: Like you, I was first drawn to the idea of getting a 5200 after seeing Brandon's stuff. Technical performance on paper is one thing, but I reckon if I liked that look I should probably just go with my gut. The video above has really nice colours, and when I first watched it I thought of some of Brandon's twilight shots. Colour rendition in low light is something we haven't discussed here really. I think the Nikons probably win there by a long stretch - that matters to me. I have Nikon manual glass with aperture rings, so the Nikon video aperture thing isn't a problem for me. Because I've sold my Canon stuff, I'm also lacking a really decent stills camera. I'm going to wait and see what Andrew says about the GM1 tomorrow (I assume it'll just be that the GM1 with speed booster 'outperforms' everything else in low light - though handling and possibly colour rendition will probably make it a no-no for me. And if it's that you can put a BM speed booster on it I'll feel the same). But bar some extraordinary revelation I'm pretty certain I'm going for the 5300. I just like the way it looks. I'm surprised you're not finding the resolution of the Panasonics better though. It's always hard to judge online, but I always find them to be by far the sharpest of the low-bitrate cameras. Personally I think the video above looks quite soft (which I mainly put down to compression and him using a kit lens for some of it). Can't you ask that store you want to buy the camera from to get one in for you? Perhaps even a G6 and a 5300 to compare? A lot of shops here would do that.

  5. the Skytronic one was good but £4000 is still 10x the price of the Chinese one and it looks almost the same - both had carbon fibre tubes here is a pic of it http://www.eoshd.com/comments/gallery/image/804-skytronic-3-axis-stabalizer-rig-at-bve-north-show-2013/ good Idea! Get one for Mr Reid to test!!

  6. QuickHitRecord comparing "freelance" to "corporate" work is "6 of one, half dozen of the other." They have different pros and cons; net-net, they are equal. It's really a question of what fits your personality, as dbp said. It seems to me, that everyone I know has pretty much gotten the career they've wanted. Not 100% of course, but closer than i would have expected. When I worked in Hollywood in my 20s I saw that though "successful" people seemed to really enjoy what they did, they weren't any happier than me. The simple fact is, the more success you have the more time you have to spend with other people and the more political stuff you need to deal with. And of course, the pressure. It's easy to go up, most people can't deal with going down, which happens to everyone. Every level of success, so to speak, has its relative scale of "good as it gets." My acid test is simple. Whose job and life do I want? That's what you have to ask yourself before making changing anything. If you think the life of a hot-ticket commercial DP is better than yours, then you have to have evidence that it is so. Do they have the same personal relationships. Time to do what they want, etc, etc. All this is the same for all fields. I suggest you read (or watch the movie, which has a slightly different slant) "The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit". That movie is about exactly the questions you raise. As true today! I went through a similar process and made the same choice he did.

  8. I work for a big corporation. I have never freelanced and I often wonder what it would be like to set my own schedule and have more creative control. I suppose that the grass is always greener. But many of my friends and old classmates who freelance seem to think that I have the "holy grail" of video jobs. I never wanted to believe this, because I often feel that we are steered away from making the visually striking and thought-provoking content that I have always wanted to create. But then about two years ago, my boss posted an ad for another Producer -- basically my job. We got a lot of replies, and now every freelancer that I meet asks where I work, and then tells me that they applied for that position. We are certainly not the only in-house creative department in the area, but this has happened dozens of times. So, the question that I pose to the other people looking in on this thread is this: apart from the established filmmakers, hot-ticket commercial DPs, and above-the-line production folks, are a steady paycheck and health benefits really as good as it gets for people in our field?

  12. are you trolling denko? What's your problem? If it's too rich for your blood, go buy a sankor but your sarcasm is unwanted here. EDIT: I said "I see these going for $4500- $7000 on ebay". Why should I sell it for any less? I don't even want to let this go but if I got an offer that's tempting enough, than I will sell it to fund my gear otherwise I will NEVER let it go. ebay example 1: sold ebay example 2: sold

  14. GH2 with cropped spherical footage...Looks very nice but does not look anamorphic in my opinion. If it is, it must be a LA7200 on a superwide taking lens that is dissolving any anamorphic feeling from the image.

    G6 vs GH3 vs D5200 vs ?

I don't understand, are you trying to make my decisions harder or easier? ;) Gh3 is a great deal for the money. G6 is not a whole lot different. But it has peaking and cleaner moire/aliasing. GH3 has audio and higher bitrates and build quality. G6 is compatible with my GH2 accessories (batteries, etc). GH3 has more wide spread support (popularity, other accessories, etc).    ::head explosion::      Andrew, we need a Non-RAW shootout! D5200, G6, GH3, heck throw in some Sony RX and whatever you have laying around that takes good quality without a crazy workflow and and unmanageable amounts of storage!
