  1. It's Chinese New Years! Got my SLR Magic Anamorphot just in time to get all the celebrations: Food, festivals, and Lion Dances! I walked around getting footage with my Canon 5D mkIII using Magic Lantern's RAW Hack. The SLR Magic Anamorphot is very sharp and it is easy to use. There is slight vignette on the footage because my Vari-ND fader is 72mm, the front of the SLR Magic Anamorphot is 77mm. I'll have to get a new one at 77mm to solve this. Most shots were at F2.8 on a cloudy day, F4 for the Jupiter 9. 2. Funny, that most of you here in the forum comment the absence of RED on the Oscar nominees by technical picture details (pro and cons). May I give a hint to a possible reason not yet mentioned here: The RED Epic is a quite noisy camera (soundwise) and degrades the quality of actors dialogue to a huge degree. If I was a producer and I would pay millions of dollars to get the best actors in the world to play for my movie, I would not work with a camera, which makes half of their work (dialogue) go directly into the trash bin! Even ten years after their first ONE camera, RED hasn´t managed to produce silent cameras, a big obstacle for scenic movies (if that´s the right expression?). The Epic fans only go down to 30% speed while recording - not 0% - a mess! Yes - there have been movies shot with RED. But either the directors/producers didn´t care for actors ADR, or it was such a SFX-movie, that the dialogue couldn´t be captured at all, as most of the other SFX equipment is even more noisy than the camera. But if you want to shoot an indoor scene with a big portion of dialogue and actors presence, then RED is not the choice for a good movie. Maybe that´s a reason. Best regards, Andreas

  3. Hello, Long time lurker, finally decided to register to learn and contribute. I've been doing a little testing with some of my Contax Zeiss glass as a taking lens to my Iscorama. Previously, I've only used a Helios 44-2. The Zeiss is noticeably sharper and seems to work well. Sorry, no lens flares here - just a quick test of overall sharpness and bokeh. I tried using a Contax Zeiss 45mm f2.8 pancake, which made a a nice, compact setup, but it unfortunately wasn't as sharp and I'd hoped for. Drew

  4. I'm currently working on a design in my free time - a small block that fits to the side of the black magic pocket with the following connectors:- 2.5mm LANC 3.5mm stereo in 3.5mm Stereo out full size HDMI connector 2.5mm/0.7mm dc power connector Just a feeler as to whether to design it with intention of making one for myself, or to design it with intention to make a batch for others. Also, what sort of price would people deem something like this as being worth. The Chinese won't ever make something like this due to the demand being quite low. I think a nice solid full size hdmi would be a welcome addition to the pocket when rigged. - the micro one is worryingly delicate

  11. There's been a lot of rubbishing of the LA7200 lately but it can still produce lovely stuff like Spencer Estabrooks posted - if used correctly you can get lovely detail in the close ups and great wide shots as well. Spencer said he shot this some time ago on an unhacked GH1 with a 24mm lens:

  13. This is the night footage. Also included is a comparison with the SLR Magic Anamorphot vs Panasonic LA7200. The "smearing" on the LA7200 can be seen here, and is more prominent on Full Frame rather than Micro 4/3rds. 15. Crap test, focus point is way off. The Sigma is focussed on the red cushion and the Voigtlander on the yellow ribbons almost 30cm further forwards. Totally clueless and therefore - Null and void :)   The Sigma 18-35mm is the sharper lens, especially if you're gonna be combining it with a decent adapter - like Speed Booster.   I will do a test showing that it is as sharp as the very best primes, even wide open.

  17. Man, that made me hungry! Great looking stuff man. I got my demo in right before having to go out of town and, unfortunately, unable to bring my camera with me. It's killing me knowing this little guy is still waiting for me back in Texas and here I am still in Virginia another few days. I'm really anxious to see how much it's going to make me hate my Century Optics, hah-hah.

    Iscorama and Contax Zeiss

This was a 1.5x oval aperture and the iscorama 36 in very low light:- not really a good indicator of sharpness but it illustrates the more pronounced 2x ovals being a m4/3 user you have the advantage of being able to use the speed booster to get away from the loss of lens speed.

  19. thanks for the comments guys. all noted. and additional focal lengths are in pipeline. I'd hoped for them to be available sooner, but it's taking longer to develop than I'd expected. looks like possibility of a 40mm and a 25mm, both in f2 aperture in the next few months.
