Exclusive: here is the first app to resample Panasonic GH4 4K 8bit to 10bit 4:4:4
nahua and 2 others reacted to Thomas Worth for a topic
It's not 10 bit YCbCr, and I've been careful not to mention that. Everyone knows you can't get 10 bit YCbCr from an 8 bit source even with a 1/4 downres (maybe an 1/8 downres, though). The claim is that the result is 10 bit 4:4:4, which it is. The DPX file wouldn't work otherwise. :) I think I've been clear that due to the limitations of the 4:2:0 color planes, only the luminance channel contains "true" 10 bit information. The color planes are 8 bit, and since there's only 1/4 the resolution in color (4:2:0), I can't sum the color planes and maintain the full resolution. There are still discrete chroma samples at 2K (so it's true RGB/4:4:4), albeit with a combination of 10 bit luma and 8 bit chroma. Keep in mind, however, that luma contributes to RGB, so all three color channels are being derived from a mix of 10 bit and 8 bit information. Green is almost all from luma, so the green channel is going to be almost all 10 bit. Oh and as others have suggested, this app should work with other H.264/4:2:0 cameras just fine. If people find that it offers a real benefit, I'll consider adding a GUI and ProRes 4444 export. Or just maybe add the functionality to an existing product.3 points -
Potential changes to the forum to prioritise good content, suggestions welcome...
Loma Graphics Oy and one other reacted to jurgen for a topic
It still can be. I've never seen a genuine opinion shut down on this site, regardless of how far it strays from conventional wisdom. I have found respectful disagreements to be welcome if not encouraged. With that said, I have also seen rudeness, cockiness, malice, and ill-temper attempting to pass itself off as "just a genuine opinion what's the big deal," and on that I agree with the overall sentiment of this post wholeheartedly - it needs to stop because it detracts greatly from the benefit you can get from scrutiny among friends. I would be in favor of stricter community moderation as a first step, with more aggressive steps taken as needed. There are plenty of other festering cesspools of partisan hatred on the internet. EOSHD is (and should continue to be) a place for honest, frank, respectful discourse.2 points -

Sony A7S rolling shutter test
Zach Ashcraft and one other reacted to Matthias Hutter for a topic
Sorry, this test is bullshit. In this video, the rolling shuter is composed of 4 components that add together: 1. The A7S rolling shutter (duh) 2. The raster scan display (equal to ~1/24 or 1/30 s for the 4K monitor) 3. The unknown rolling shutter speed of the camera filming the monitor 4. The raster scan display you are watching (e.g. 1/60 s, with rare exceptions like Lightboost) explanation for display skew: The rolling shutter of the A7S might still be the dominant factor, but I'd wait and see for some real tests.2 points -

$3299 is too much. Pros are unlikely to embrace in their masses with wobbly jello and wobbly HDMI cable and consumers are likely to snub it on an affordability basis if it is over $2k especially when they can get the more featured packed GH4 at $1699 and internal 4K without need to spend an extra $2k on a recorder. Careful Sony, this is a promising camera... don't blow it. Reduce the crappy jello and keep the price accessible.2 points -

This explains all the slow moving and locked down shots in all that beautiful footage we've seen so far. I guess they didn't want to let the cat outta the bag too early. I can't help feeling this is nothing more than a bridge camera to something far better coming soon from Sony. It's not really 4k, but it is,... it's great in low light, but it's processing power isn't good enough to control the rolling shutter. Maybe next year though.2 points -

Panasonic GH4 firmware goes final and shipping soon?
jurgen reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Also the highly anticipated Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM ART now has a price - this will be an exceptional piece of glass to use on the GH4 with Speed Booster pre-order the Nikon mount version at B&H for $995 or the Canon mount version This shot by EOSHD forum member Julian confirms that Panasonic have now completed the final production firmware for the GH4 (version 1.0). The unit pictured above was loaned to Julian but it is a good sign the camera will be shipping on time from stores - possibly by the end of this month in less than 2 weeks. Over the last few months it has been a shame to see such good information from level-headed people here on the forum being totally drowned out by poor quality posts, bullshit, rudeness and just general argumentativeness or stuff which has nothing to do with filmmaking or even reality. Frankly it is becoming a real pain to moderate and I just don't have time for it. All over the internet forums are the same, they are all a total PITA to read because of a disruptive few. I am considering a change to the forum which would effectively see it closed but for a few selected members who have a proven track record of good posts. The forum would have a lot of exposure and readers. Like a 'second blog' to EOSHD that everybody can get something interesting out of. In preparation for the potential change over the next few weeks I will name the top quality people on here. Those who contribute interesting and cool stuff to the forum... This is so EOSHD readers can check their profiles and check their posts more often - essentially I want to start drawing attention to the good guys rather than them always being drowned out. By quality content I also mean good attitude towards other members, not just regular posting of constructive and creative stuff. People who help other shooters out when they are in need of it... and people who avoid the inevitable mud-slinging when someone with 2 or 3 posts jumps in to stir things up for their own enjoyment! To have so much good info here especially on the anamorphic forum, drowned out by a vocal minority of idiots is simply unacceptable. I'm not going to start censoring and banning en-masse - it is a shit job and I won't do it. I will simply close the forum and when it reopens it will be a circle of friends and 100% constructive. No bullshit. Like a cool hangout before the tourists get hold of it and ruin it. Some may feel this is undemocratic. I will listen to them and get feedback on the idea before I decide on it 100%. I just really think a forum with fewer members but LOTS of readers would be more useful to the readers of EOSHD. So to those who get a kick out of a fight or a kick out of annoying myself and other filmmakers on the forum, it's time to consider whether you want the forum to continue, or whether it will end up being closed but still readable. I am thinking this could be the most useful outlet for the good stuff on the forum and a way to assist me in running the site. Cheers - Andrew1 point

That's the internyet in a nutshell, or at least the gadget/tech-oriented online forums. All gadget geek subspecies tend to bicker and whine, and get into each others' nerves at times. The more popular the site gets, the harder it becomes to maintain a good signal to noise ratio. Anyway, how about "hiring" a trusted moderator or two to help you in keeping the loonies on the path? That's an old-fashioned, but still a working solution, isn't it. Might be a better solution than a strictly closed forum, which might dry out and die after a few months or so, despite good intentions. Well, just a thought. Carry on, one way or other, as a private club or an open bar.1 point

This is an interesting topic, and something that a lot of sites have difficulty with. I have been a part of the Iron Brush forum for quite some time, and I have noticed a very different atmosphere there, it is very respectful, and every post is thoughtfully written. Amazingly, the forum feels very constructive. I have also noticed a bunch of garbage posts popping up here... my favourite is when a poster has clearly not read the rest of the thread... uhg. The Iron Brush forum requires that you email the mod, and present your work/introduce yourself before you are allowed to make an account. I think that this could help a great deal... though, whether or not that would take up too much of your time, I'm not sure... I like the idea of a semi-closed forum, however, I do think that you should allow for the growth of that membership by accepting new members based on what they may have to offer. When the membership is stable enough, and everyone is on the same page, and here to learn and grow.. it should just moderate itself pretty well.1 point
-
Get a voting system, something simple like "useful or garbage", after a few "garbage" votes the post gets hidden, or goes towards the end and useful replies would stay on top... do the same for forum threads and within threads. The downside to an "elitist" system is that new "members", no matter how serious or helpful, would be locked out, and if the ones included start losing interest, it might become a very lonely place.1 point

Panasonic GH4 firmware goes final and shipping soon?
johnnymossville reacted to Darktide Media for a topic
I got to try the 96fps at NAB, it wasnt bad but not as sharp as the HD. The normal HD is crazy sharp with loads of detail. Cant wait to see 4K on this thing. I think with the right setting the 96fps can look just fine once color and sharpen is done. Its got a good slow mo effect and most people will no notice the softness if the subject is good.1 point -

Sony A7S rolling shutter test
themartist reacted to wolf33d for a topic
Lol, I am pretty sure Sony has NO CLUE what the price will be. For sure in term of production cost it is similar to a classic A7. Now it is only about marketing. As andrew said, video pros will prefer the GH4 if they are on a budget, or a real video camera if they have money. This A7S is perfect for people like me who do stills and videos and want great quality of both. But we are consumers and not willing to pay more than 2K. I saw many many post (SAR comments, forums..) of people saying they pay it under 2K, and not if more. 2K is the limit, so the price of this camera should be 1999 maximum (ideally 1699 to match GH4) otherwise Sony FAILS and I F*** them1 point -
Panasonic GH4 vs Sony A7S compared - who wins the 4K battle on paper?
Julian reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
CineLikeD does grade nicely. I think sharpness at -5 would help the codec and allow you to choose sharpness in post - add it from a lower baseline setting if needed. I keep contrast at 0, haven't really experimented much with the flatter -5 contrast image and CineLikeD yet. The standard profile gives good results too and the CineLikeV is very contrasty with blacks crushed if you don't plan to grade it.1 point -

I had a chance to play with the Sony AX100 in Best Buy last week. This rolling shutter is JUST LIKE IT in 4K mode. I will say that the AX100 did have a great image in 4K and the rolling shutter in 1080 mode was not bad at all.1 point -
Yes censored. So I'll mention this on here instead... A few years ago when I was starting EOSHD, I was banned from the DVXUser forum due to disagreements with some members and some of the moderating team. There was a bit of an element of a personality clash. At the time I was also running some articles strongly critical of Red and their delays / price / spec changes with the Scarlet. Landmine Media who run DVXUser actually went to Jim Jannard's legal department and together they sued me for $70,000. Sued for forum posts and my own opinion at EOSHD. In order to drop the case, Jim Jannard's lawyer said I would have to sign a non-disparagement agreement which I duly signed and faxed over under pressure of a very stressful court battle which I couldn't afford to defend myself over. I simply wanted a quiet life. There's always been a very vocal anti-EOSHD group of users at DVX, BMCC and Personal-View. In recent months it has become borderline harassment. I've been caused no end of stress from this and it is beginning to really get to me, personally and privately. I hope this helps to give some perspective as to my strong feelings towards the BMCUser taunts.1 point

I don't think it's so much the physical sensor size as the amount of data to read off it. 4K is a lot of pixels. 2160 lines is double the number to scan than 1080. It takes twice as long, so to compensate you have to speed up the rolling shutter. Sony have not done this enough.1 point -

It's possible that blackmagic just responded to Andrew's questions with boilerplate responses, in other words, they are the ones copying and pasting.. just playing devils advocate. But I saw an interview where the president admitted that formatting a disk in the camera was way down on his list of to-do's and the response gives a false sense of "almost being ready". My general sense is that blackmagic is a little far over their skiis on products and firmware updates will be far from satisfying for most little glitches with older, less important stuff.1 point

Where's 60p on the more compact models? The Studio offers 1080@60 on the $2K mark, so they now have the technology to offer that frame rate at this price range. I don't believe any of the cinema cameras do (beside from the URSA). Why is that? Am I the only one who was hoping from Black Magic a camera with similar specs to the new KineMini or at least an upgraded Cinema Camera able to reach 60p?1 point

When did I specifically pointed out your "positive evaluation" as "hype"? theres a lot of press about this camera out there and thats what i mean by "hype" not your comments. As you pointed out, most of your readers here are usually lower budget, therefore I made what you called "warnings". I said this because some of us can't afford to be switching lenses and bodies all the time, because we usually lose money, time, and energy doing swaps. So we need to be more careful when we make our choices. I also, still don't understand why you are being kind harsh towards me specially since I've apologize to you.. is it not ok to express my opinion here? I don't meant to offend anyone really, specially you.1 point -
ANAMORPHIC MUSIC VIDEO WITH ISCORAMA (SORT OF)
Rudolf reacted to BenCoughlan for a topic
Hi Guys Thought I would share our latest music video that we shot using Kowa anamorphics (40mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm PL with ALEXA) and which we used an iscorama and BMCC (2.5k) to do a few pick ups with. Sadly only one of the Iscorama shots made it into the video. Not from lack of quality or it standing out... but just from the story telling side of things we only ending up needing one. I have to say when we were editing, how impressed I was with the combo. It held its own very well against the Alexa and Kowa combo and now plan on shooting more with it. One thing I have always been conscious about with the iscorama is how it would fair on proper sets. I do often worry that its sometimes hard to tell if things are sharp and the focus is stiff making it hard to use a follow focus. I plan on having mine 'Van Diemen Rehoused' in the next few weeks to make it more onset friendly and then will hopefully get more use out of it. The iscorama shot is the night time driving just before he enters the bike workshop. Could upload some other shots from the shoot if anyone is interested.1 point -
Mac app to resample GH4 8 bit 4:2:0 to 10 bit 4:4:4
Richard Wait reacted to James_H for a topic
Here's a GUI I quickly put together: http://www.mediafire.com/download/s9wyyfw9qvh8cfl/GH444_GUI.dmg You still need to download the original gh444 file. Let me know if it's broken. It's super basic. It doesn't provide any info on progress, but it'll let you know when it's done. Edit: A little explanation: Download the file, mount it and copy "GH444 GUI" to your computer somewhere (e.g. Applications). Open the app, click "Browse" to specify which file you want to convert. The output will be in a folder called dpx_output in the same folder as the 4K file. Click "Start" Select the gh444 file that Thomas Worth provided Wait. A popup with the word "Done" will been shown when it's done. Known issues: It doesn't show progress. If you cancel it, it will still say "Done" Not sure if it works with OS X 10.7 or earlier, I haven't tested. No way to set the output directory1 point -
The footage above by no means does the KineMini justice, some of the other stuff I've seen from the earlier cams is incredible. It's a completely different market to the GH4, A7S... probably why hardly anyone on this forum is interested in it! The Kinefinity guys are also very forward thinking.. I think they are going to do very well. I want one.1 point
