Sony A7S rolling shutter test
Ivan Lietaert and 2 others reacted to FilmBrute for a topic
If the prosumer camera footage I watch on vimeo is indicative, 99% of the people who will buy this camera won't rack focus, let alone pan the camera. I'm pretty sure non professionals who buy multi thousand dollar cameras just buy stuff to produce test footage. In other words the A7s will be just fine for filming bridges, people walking, and sunsets. :P3 points -

I subscribe to the 'evolution' theory above. There are so many changes in the video market, one just can't google everything. I receive newsletters from Adobe, Avid, BMD, Apple, Panasonic, Sony, CreativeCow, NoFilmSchool, Wolfcrow and a bunch of german sites, but I learn faster and more from EOSHD. Here is how it works: Andrew shovels in articles. People leave their comments, many in the way of dogs who set their marks on new trees. But very quickly you have a broad scope of opinions, of aspects. They aren't reliable, many aren't even on topic, but in the end, one knows more.2 points

i suspect the combination of lens/bokeh, colour grade and nice back lighting is whats most apealing to your visual sense rather than the camera itself..2 points

The vistavision sized sensor will lend itself better to locked down shots anyway. Ultimately look at the rolling shutter as something to limit the camera movement and impart a bigger feel to what you're shooting. Fast paced cinematic full frame always looks strange to me since if it were a proper sized cinema camera very often there simply wouldnt be the means to move the camera fast enough to promote rolling shutter artefacts anyway. I cant remember the last time I saw a shot on any film where the dp has requested the operator swings the camera from left to right over and over again.2 points

This. This cuts down the work for you, and insulates you (somewhat) from criticism about what gets cut from the forum. You can just tell people to take it up with the mods. It allows you to play good cop to the mod's bad cop. It's worth a shot anyway. It's obviously something you could undo. You might also consider a "shitlist" topic where all complaints can be logged. This will help to avoid the appearance that you are silencing critics, and allow you to remove these type of posts from what are otherwise on-topic threads (and then moving them to the shitlist).2 points -

It still can be. I've never seen a genuine opinion shut down on this site, regardless of how far it strays from conventional wisdom. I have found respectful disagreements to be welcome if not encouraged. With that said, I have also seen rudeness, cockiness, malice, and ill-temper attempting to pass itself off as "just a genuine opinion what's the big deal," and on that I agree with the overall sentiment of this post wholeheartedly - it needs to stop because it detracts greatly from the benefit you can get from scrutiny among friends. I would be in favor of stricter community moderation as a first step, with more aggressive steps taken as needed. There are plenty of other festering cesspools of partisan hatred on the internet. EOSHD is (and should continue to be) a place for honest, frank, respectful discourse.2 points -

As a newcomer to the forums, and one who wishes to be a positive member but won't have the time to prove myself, all I ask is that there is some public section, even if you never go there yourself to allow us newbies to prove ourselves and if some few of us prove to be the type of people you want, that we can be highlighted to you somehow and get access!2 points -
Over the last few months it has been a shame to see such good information from level-headed people here on the forum being totally drowned out by poor quality posts, bullshit, rudeness and just general argumentativeness or stuff which has nothing to do with filmmaking or even reality. Frankly it is becoming a real pain to moderate and I just don't have time for it. All over the internet forums are the same, they are all a total PITA to read because of a disruptive few. I am considering a change to the forum which would effectively see it closed but for a few selected members who have a proven track record of good posts. The forum would have a lot of exposure and readers. Like a 'second blog' to EOSHD that everybody can get something interesting out of. In preparation for the potential change over the next few weeks I will name the top quality people on here. Those who contribute interesting and cool stuff to the forum... This is so EOSHD readers can check their profiles and check their posts more often - essentially I want to start drawing attention to the good guys rather than them always being drowned out. By quality content I also mean good attitude towards other members, not just regular posting of constructive and creative stuff. People who help other shooters out when they are in need of it... and people who avoid the inevitable mud-slinging when someone with 2 or 3 posts jumps in to stir things up for their own enjoyment! To have so much good info here especially on the anamorphic forum, drowned out by a vocal minority of idiots is simply unacceptable. I'm not going to start censoring and banning en-masse - it is a shit job and I won't do it. I will simply close the forum and when it reopens it will be a circle of friends and 100% constructive. No bullshit. Like a cool hangout before the tourists get hold of it and ruin it. Some may feel this is undemocratic. I will listen to them and get feedback on the idea before I decide on it 100%. I just really think a forum with fewer members but LOTS of readers would be more useful to the readers of EOSHD. So to those who get a kick out of a fight or a kick out of annoying myself and other filmmakers on the forum, it's time to consider whether you want the forum to continue, or whether it will end up being closed but still readable. I am thinking this could be the most useful outlet for the good stuff on the forum and a way to assist me in running the site. Cheers - Andrew1 point

I think Filmbrute is misunderstood here. From what he wrote, I think he's saying that professionals are making great work on cameras that may not be the best... however they're pushed to their limits to achieve awesome results. Some hobbyists may never use features that cost thousands of dollars, yet complain bitterly how these camera are inadequate. Its a true irony that in no way is done to offend hobbyists. Most of the time the enthusiastic hobbyists become professionals, or at least produce work of a pro quality. Its more of a comment on this materialist trend in consumerism to always have the best, regardless of whether its worth it, needed or even used at all. It becomes more an industry of appearances than actual artistry. This is evident by many clients who see the smaller gh2 or gh3 and assume that the filmmaker is not as pro as one who uses the 5D Mark ii. I don't think its anything to get too defensive about. If you test cars, travel or have a beautiful family, you have incredible inspiration for some amazing footage. However sometimes purchasing the best camera with all of the bells and whistles starts to become the inspiration, which is sad.1 point -

While that may be true, don't tar all amateurs with that brush - I love film making and yes, I make films about my kid, my dog and a tonne of other stuff you're not going to enjoy watching - but then, you're not the intended audience. When I make a movie about an incredible bridge I saw, just remember, when you sneer at it, you're sneering at my holiday album - I put it on vimeo so that I can share it with the other people who were on holiday with me by sharing a link. Do I rack focus, well actually I do, but do you make you family wait for golden hour to make sure your holiday snaps of bridges are "professional" quality? I'm not a professional, I don't want to be and if you know you can make better than me by virtue of doing it for your living, that's just fine, but I'm a test driver for a living. I get to drive exotic cars every day of my life, fast around amazing roads. Is it fair of me to sneer at what car you drive, offer professional level "critique" when you need a second stab at parking straight, chortle at you in internet forums as you can't change a wheel in 30 seconds? I understand what it's like to be so good at something that you can make a living out of it while being surrounded by everyone else who can only just function, I really do, but I promise you, it's not necessary to be a bellend about it.1 point -

Well... I downloaded the A6000 mts videos from Cameralabs review and the iso tests. Comparing to Nikon, to previous Sony NEX models and to Panasonic M43 cameras my conclusions are: The A6000 does not show aliasing which is pretty good. There is very small moire, not disturbing enough, possible to live with (I saw it in the beach shoot). The noise in high iso does not show chroma noise which is great. The noise in high iso is very fine and charming compared to previous NEX and to Panasonic. The iso up to 1600 does not need denoise. The iso 3200 is clean after denoise. The iso 6400 is clean after denoise with small trembling in shadows, not disturbing. The iso 12800 is not usable. The resolution is a little gross compared to Panasonic, Panasonic is more cinematic, razor sharp. If you want that razor sharp look which is desired to compete in tv broadcast and cinema theaters Panasonic M43 is the way to go, but the low light performance and E-mount with focal reducers allowing 1.16 crop factor is amazing on A6000. The gross in A6000 resolution is more perceived in wide shots showing buildings, in low light it is not annoying, but still much better resolution than Canon APS cameras. The resolution is on par with D5300 and I think A6000 is better because does not show halos in contrast edges. Low light is better than D5300. The highlights are recorded above 100 IRE and can be recovered in post production and this is amazing. There are textures and tonal range hidden in the cliped highligts, something like 1 fstop of dynamic range can be recovered in post, something like HTP in Canon cameras. The 5 levels of DRO to lift shadows combined with recovered highlights can deliver a great dynamic range. With a RJ lens turbo to increase light by 1 fstop and reduce crop factor this camera will be a new low budget Queen for low light and for use all kind of lenses. The 1.16 crop factor with the lens turbo just avoids the soft and dark corners from the full frame lenses. If you can record audio outside camera the A6000 is great for indie cinema. Also there is the option to buy the expensive bluetooth mic. I hope Sony give us mic input in A7000 and maybe S-Log2 in the A7000 also. The auto focus is accurate and smooth and does not show hunting, this is great. I like the A6000 a lot! I have the dream of Sony give us S-Log2 in the A7000 to increase dynamic range 1300% That's it.1 point

That's why you gotta take what these hired "filmmakers" say with a grain of salt. You'll never get the real low down until someone like Andrew and some others point it out. I got excited too about the A7s too, then I heard it was only 8-bit, then realized it was still only 8-bit even in 4k with a recorder and then a price gets tossed around, $4100.00 USD and now this rolling shutter issue. It's a speciality cam, lock it down and shoot in the dark if you absolutly have to and you'll do fine with it. If you take to heart what these showcase filmmakers say, you'll be kicking yourself down the road. Hey if it was under 2 grand I wouldn't even write this post but after hearing what they'd like to charge I had to chime in.1 point

You need some level headed moderators to help you out, as its obvious that you aren't really coping. However, there does seem to be a rise in trolling, either for the fun of it or by arrogance or by accident! Not just here but everywhere - loads of forums seem to have become very very angry places. By trolling i mean derailing interesting posts (on purpose or not) & disrespectful replies which are normally done by people who are know-it-alls or just want to be right all the time or just want an arguement. And this can & has come from a variety of posters new & old (or should i say respected?). Also it would be nice to have a few extra stickies e.g. Andy Lee's Most useful lenses etc... or Lighting options on a budget (with examples of work done) etc...This could cut down on the repeated posts asking the same questions over & over & over again... No more selling, but that's been tried before.1 point -

If you did this what would be the criteria for new members to be accepted into the forum to be able to post something? Instead of closing it off I would recommend the following: A 30-day read-only period, figure if they're patient enough to wait 30-days after signing up they're probably not out to troll the site. After 30-days the can only post a maximum of 5 posts per day to encourage quality over quantity do this until 150 posts are reached if they hang in there for that long they're probably going to be a good forum member. Delegate some moderation powers to a few trusted and productive forum members like the ability to mark and hide a post as off-topic or even issue bans.1 point -
Can you not implement some of the following: - No new topics (manually set/required number of replies) - Dislike button (below threshold auto hide) - Temporary ban (for abuse or out of line) - Add a ' on a warning' marker and display it with the user stats and profile pic on the left - Report button - Add a reputation feature This is your house. You've been very lenient to be honest with you and I think it could be much better with a bit of tighter governance that promotes slightly better etiquette.1 point

I like the idea of a 'agree' and 'disagree' button. as well as a 'flag as inappropriate to discussion' button. I imagine it would be great to see who shares the same opinions as others in a tally system. more than 2 votes as inappropriate and the comment is auto deleted and the comment flagged. Any further post related to the inappropriate comment /off topic comment is also deleted by hand?. Too many degenerates with too much free time looking for arguments at the moment.1 point
-
yea, i've noticed a high level of confrontational people on this forum too, but it's not the dissent that is a problem I think, it's the personal attacks. saying someone still lives at home and uses "mommy's credit card", lol. you could just start a warning system with clearly stated rules not to break? no personal "ad hominum" attacks and get a moderator, even if that moderator is a user. i'd also advise you to take a less active role in responding to negative comments.. just ignore some of them or issue a warning, but don't engage in an argument.. that just feeds the trolls. don't feel the need to fight back if someone criticizes the site, just consider if it's worthy of an official response. from a ux perspective, rather than sorting based on quality of post (or only allowing certain people to speak), just have a collapse of a comment if it gets too many negative votes, just like youtube.1 point

That's the internyet in a nutshell, or at least the gadget/tech-oriented online forums. All gadget geek subspecies tend to bicker and whine, and get into each others' nerves at times. The more popular the site gets, the harder it becomes to maintain a good signal to noise ratio. Anyway, how about "hiring" a trusted moderator or two to help you in keeping the loonies on the path? That's an old-fashioned, but still a working solution, isn't it. Might be a better solution than a strictly closed forum, which might dry out and die after a few months or so, despite good intentions. Well, just a thought. Carry on, one way or other, as a private club or an open bar.1 point

I noticed also RS when playing with the camera. The video makes the A7s look unusable. But just for your info, attached to this A7s was a 70-200mm lens and it was fully zoomed in on the video above. So who is doing a pan like this at 200mm? I don't. Yes for sports it is the wrong camera, but for filming under controlled situations to do a real estate video for example, this is the perfect camera. I have no idea how the rs will look at a GH4 at 200mm. Maybe it will not be that extrem but it will be there for sure! On the other side when I compared the noise level between the A7s and the Gh4 there was a difference like night and day between both cameras :D1 point

I completely agree with SleepyWill. I've been reading EOSHD forums for a while now and I really like the insight into videography on cameras that are within the reach of my wallet. I agree, though I understand Andrew's point of view, especially because lately I've seen some unjustified personal attacks on him. I don't understand why people expect him to be like the BBC and attack him for letting his personal views show. I always understood EOSHD as an "expanded" blog, and it is precisely Andrew's personal and subjective view that attracted many to the site and forum. There are less "personal" rumour and news sites out there, and anyone is free to go there if they are looking for press releases and such. I personally would hate EOSHD to become just another one of those sites. Here opinion is discussed openly, and that makes a difference, but I would totally understand if Andrew came to the conclusion that it is not worth the rudeness and ungratefulness he has to put up with.1 point

Zach Ashcraft reacted to Matthias Hutter for a topic
Sorry, this test is bullshit. In this video, the rolling shuter is composed of 4 components that add together: 1. The A7S rolling shutter (duh) 2. The raster scan display (equal to ~1/24 or 1/30 s for the 4K monitor) 3. The unknown rolling shutter speed of the camera filming the monitor 4. The raster scan display you are watching (e.g. 1/60 s, with rare exceptions like Lightboost) explanation for display skew: The rolling shutter of the A7S might still be the dominant factor, but I'd wait and see for some real tests.1 point -

$3299 is too much. Pros are unlikely to embrace in their masses with wobbly jello and wobbly HDMI cable and consumers are likely to snub it on an affordability basis if it is over $2k especially when they can get the more featured packed GH4 at $1699 and internal 4K without need to spend an extra $2k on a recorder. Careful Sony, this is a promising camera... don't blow it. Reduce the crappy jello and keep the price accessible.1 point -
I keep thinking that its not THAT heavy or way too big nor way too expensive. Here's a look at AlexaPlus weight: ALEXA Plus camera body + SxS Module: 7.0 Kg/15.4 lb ALEXA Plus camera body + SxS Module + EVF-1 + Viewfinder Mounting Bracket VMB-2 + viewfinder cable + Center Camera Handle CCH-1: 8.4 Kg/18.5 lb And in terms of Dimensons: ALEXA: Length: 332 mm/12.95", width: 175 mm/6.89", height: 158 mm/ 6.22" URSA: Lenght: 12.35", Width: 6.12" Height (w/handle): 9.63" So, in theory it'll be like handling an ALEXA. If we compare it to a DSLR or other small camera like a BMPCC, Cinema EOS, even a RED Scarlet well yeah its THAT heavy. Price.... well... $6k vs an $8k up to $80k market? Think about it... I mean it can't be any cheaper. I agree that URSA is kind of a heavy-overkill alternative for us DSLR shooters but I'm glad it's budget friendly and by the looks one of good quality. Remember, there is no perfect camera.1 point

Seems I need to clear up some bullshit with a big broom... yet again after leaping to the defence of Blackmagic. I wonder why I am not on a beach somewhere and instead bothering to provide a free source of info about their cameras. First off.... Kristian posted the update yesterday not 2-3 days ago as Olly P suggested. http://forum.blackmagicdesign.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21179 Look at the date and time stamp. I believe Olly has in mind the very first update about the 4 fixes in the firmware, none of the other details were in that first update last week. I did not report on that first update like nofilmschool - instead I pushed Blackmagic for more details by email all during NAB because I wasn't satisfied that the original update had enough info in it. This discussion by email with Blackmagic started a few hours after the new camera announcements at NAB. Yesterday the reply this article was based on came to me as a personal reply from Patrick at Blackmagic directly, fitting like a glove to all the points I'd raised. I am not trying to take credit for anything I didn't initiate... that's the way it happened and there were other emails following up to it. I am putting the info I had in the email out there. I'm not cutting and pasting it from their forum. To hear some people speak about me with minimal respect is very saddening. To hear them you'd think I was a PR hungry prick grandstanding like Tony Abbott tweeting pictures of himself on the phone to air force commanders or something. I had not seen that they'd also posted it on their forum. I don't follow nofilmschool either. I really don't care who should take the credit for the update or whether Patrick was emailing me a cut and paste job. Important thing is I got put the info in your hands and it came to me direct from the source.1 point

My Trip to NAB
nahua reacted to Darktide Media for a topic
Thought I would share my thoughts on NAB this year and some of the things that I saw and tested. If you have questions feel free to ask, I will do my best to get back to them and whatnot. For those who dont know, I shoot action sports and own Darktide Media. A company based out of San Diego Ca. One thing that we did this year was said a few weeks before NAB, we are going to NAB to find our 4K camera system. What will fit us and what can we use day in day out for production in the dirt and rain if needed. We are not a huge company by any means but growing. We punish our gear to no end so that is a big part of what system that we want to invest in. Lets Begin...... To start things off I will just come out and say this, we are happy that we pre-ordered the GH4 camera, we have chosen this as our camera of choice for the fact of it works and it does some really really amazing things for what you are paying. I will explain this more in a bit. BlackMagic Design - I have never used or really seen a BM camera in person before this show, all I know is BM is great in everything they do except cameras. The BMCC was great the 4K was a joke from many people I have talked to. The lack of firmware is also a joke. They need to fix that and get it out. One this I have to say is that the URSA is a real camera, a pro cinema camera and this is what everyone wanted I believe. The main drawback to me is the weight and that just cant do for our company at this point. The way its layout is and the big 10 inch fold out screen may look weird but in person its amazing, pulling focus off that with focus peaking is so easy. The two touch screens are great as well. I dont understand the CFast Card over SSD but we will see soon. The other huge thing is 60p at 4K. This is amazing at this price point no doubt. I talked with some of the BM people and they had a lot to say to me. I have no doubt that this camera will be out in July. They dont want to mess up. They know what people want and firmwares are coming to fix alot of issues. The whole sensor thing is just great as well, now we know what we are buying will not be out of date. There is some talk of 120fps at 4K as well....so we shall see. AJA Cion - Not much to say about this camera except this is amazing. The footage is amazing, the layout is amazing. They really though this one though from every angle of shooter. Cant wait to see more footage from this camera in the hands of film makers. If you are looking for a great 4K camera in this style of layout but dont like the BM and dont have the budget for RED, take a good hard look at this system. RED Once again not much to say. The new things they came out with are great for those who own REDs or are looking at adding the RED camera to your company's productions. I will continue to rent these cameras when the project calls for it for the sole fact of it hurts my wallet. The Dragon is king. It is the most amazing camera I have every seen. It has soo much power I don't understand how they did for this price and in this size and weight. They were pulling 6K frame grabs, exporting to photoshop for some basic editing and then to print in huge prints that were amazing. They looked better then most DSLR I have ever seen. Lucky I was also one of the 600 to get my hands on the RED 2014 book, that alone should cost around 50 bucks. It is amazing the detail they put into it. Canon - Sorry not much going on at this booth for my company needs. I had Canon at one point but they are way behind if you ask me. 3 Axis Gimbals - These were everywhere, just every way you look there was a company that had one and somehow it was the best. My thought was that FreeFly really does make the best. The M5 is just one hell of a tool, made to withstand small and large productions. Defy was right behind. I dont really understand the G2 gimbals to be honest. Its good but if you want Defy save a bit and go G5 its great as well. The one gimbal that stole me away thought was the new Silk gimbal from X Heli Pro. Its made for the GH4 and Pocket Camera. Its very light weight and cheap for what it is. The battery is amazing as well. If you want a G2 look at this first if you have a big dslr look at the G5 or M5. My thoughts though as well that the kits online will save you money if you dont mind building you own. This is one path i may end up taking to just save some money. Atomos - As a buyer of the new GH4 I had to stop by once I heard about the Shogun Recorder. This is be amazing, I was a big bummed that we didnt see a HyperDeck Shuttle from BM but this is way better. Cant wait to see more and get hands on with it. The other one to me that I will buy for sure is the Ninja Star. They were really talking about this with GoPros and all that and I for sure think that will be a major use but I will have this on my GH4 as soon as I can. Something this small that will give me 10 bit off the GH4 is amazing. If anyone knows please let me know but will the Star do HD at 60p? I would hope since the Hero 3 is doing it and the GH4 is doing it and so are the Sony Cameras. So I know this isnt much but there is so much at this show its just crazy. These things are the ones that I really thought were good and stood out to me. With so many cameras and new toys we had to ask our selfs what camera and really the choice was easy, the GH4 will be our go to camera for sure in 2014. Let me start by saying this is no camera like the GH4 right now. Its small, cheap, and easy to use. It also is very unique in the fact that out of the box it shines but also is very basic. To us at Darktide, this is a huge selling point. We can pull it out and shoot no problem, or we can go crazy and put PL glass, a full rig, a 10 bit recorder and more and make this camera shine. Then take that huge set up and strip it down and put an AF lens like the 12-35 on it and put the camera on a gimbal and record some great footage and then take it off there and put it on a heli. Get those shots then throw it in an underwater case and go swimming with it. Then when back home we can pull the 4K frame grabs as well for some of the photos we might need. If you have a 10 bit recorder on this and are shooting 4K then the frame grabs are that much better as well. No its not a RED or a RAW shooting camera. We dont need that on most stuff, most people dont. The GH4 is amazing that its such an open system. Also at this price point we can have a few of the cameras for new angles by the end of this year. We will have a full review of the camera our site as soon as we get it our hands as we start to shoot our new film. Thanks for reading, there may be mistakes. I just fly back from NAB. hope this helps a bit and free to ask me on here or message about things we saw.1 point -
I just had a good look at this and I also had a good look at the 4K Nick Driftwood short film at Brighton showing skin tones...I did not see any green tinting or magenta or artefacts or moire. I also own a GH2 and I am a professional 3d artist for the last ten years...and before that an airbrush mural artist (what would I know?) I only mix colors daily for 2d textures on 3d models, define realistic ray trace or hi res shadow map shadows with 3d lights, set sub surface scattering for realistic skin etc...etc... I cant see it!!...especially in the Driftwood vid, if you cant make a good image or film with this camera...then you probably cant make a good image or film with whatever else is out there either.1 point
