Sony A7S rolling shutter test
Emanuel and 2 others reacted to dslrfilmnoob for a topic
As someone who actually tested this in person. The a7s was only slightly worse than the Canon 6d I had on hand. While that's not amazing, it's far from a deal breaker. Sony reps said that the firmware was in the very early stages and that the rolling shutter would be better than the 5d mark III by the time it was released. They pointed specifically at 12mb sensor versus the 5d mark III's much larger sensor and total read times.3 points -
DIY shoulder support for BMPCC (less than 50 bucks)
Henry Gentles and one other reacted to Axel for a topic
This is my fifth attempt to find an affordable stabilization solution for the BMPCC, particularly for the heavy setup with Speedbooster and Sigma 18-35. It works perfectly, and the only two things that are missing are 1. Pistol grip to be clicked underneath the cage with a quick release plate and 2. Lanc-controller with button on top of the grip for START/STOP. It consists of an old, self-built shoulder pad with counterweight (aluminum rack, ~$ 5,- , bent in a vice and padded with foam rubber, ~ $ 2,-), a micro goose neck with 3/8" connections, ~ $ 7,- , filled with a steel rod, ~ $1,-) and a ball head (~$ 30,-). The ball head allows for fast height- and angle-adjustments. I found this to be the most crucial aspect of all shoulder supports. You both stress your neck with only half an inch of unergonomic proportions and run the risk of unintentionally rotating your frame. Not with this ball head. If you loosen the ball, you can screw it on or off the cage within 10 seconds. The counterweight could be substituted with a battery pack, and the rod that helds the goose neck stiff could also be a steel tube (well, perhaps, it could turn out to be too weak then) to hide the cable. The shoulder pad doesn't look particularly elegant, I'm sure you can do better.2 points -

Let's be brutally honest. Of all the videos in the Screening Room, only, say, ten impressed me at all. My own stuff would also go unnoticed, for it isn't any better. A contest could be a good way to focus our ambitions. Set a motto, a subject, set a date, when all films have to be online on the same day (not earlier, not later). Create a poll for ten days (or so). Allow people from outside EOSHD to vote (don't know how, perhaps via facebook?).2 points -

Over the last few months it has been a shame to see such good information from level-headed people here on the forum being totally drowned out by poor quality posts, bullshit, rudeness and just general argumentativeness or stuff which has nothing to do with filmmaking or even reality. Frankly it is becoming a real pain to moderate and I just don't have time for it. All over the internet forums are the same, they are all a total PITA to read because of a disruptive few. I am considering a change to the forum which would effectively see it closed but for a few selected members who have a proven track record of good posts. The forum would have a lot of exposure and readers. Like a 'second blog' to EOSHD that everybody can get something interesting out of. In preparation for the potential change over the next few weeks I will name the top quality people on here. Those who contribute interesting and cool stuff to the forum... This is so EOSHD readers can check their profiles and check their posts more often - essentially I want to start drawing attention to the good guys rather than them always being drowned out. By quality content I also mean good attitude towards other members, not just regular posting of constructive and creative stuff. People who help other shooters out when they are in need of it... and people who avoid the inevitable mud-slinging when someone with 2 or 3 posts jumps in to stir things up for their own enjoyment! To have so much good info here especially on the anamorphic forum, drowned out by a vocal minority of idiots is simply unacceptable. I'm not going to start censoring and banning en-masse - it is a shit job and I won't do it. I will simply close the forum and when it reopens it will be a circle of friends and 100% constructive. No bullshit. Like a cool hangout before the tourists get hold of it and ruin it. Some may feel this is undemocratic. I will listen to them and get feedback on the idea before I decide on it 100%. I just really think a forum with fewer members but LOTS of readers would be more useful to the readers of EOSHD. So to those who get a kick out of a fight or a kick out of annoying myself and other filmmakers on the forum, it's time to consider whether you want the forum to continue, or whether it will end up being closed but still readable. I am thinking this could be the most useful outlet for the good stuff on the forum and a way to assist me in running the site. Cheers - Andrew1 point

Sony A7S rolling shutter test

It means just forget the hype, ignore the whiny enginerds and wait for the real thing with the final firmware to arrive. Then, and only then draw any far-reaching conclusions. All conclusions drawn before that are just meaningless nerdy-nam-nam. As for the literal meaning of that one sentence, surely you don't want to fall into the pedantic mode. He just made a slight typo, and he was simply referring to the 5D3 sensor being larger in megapixels than the A7r one, and thus it's slower to read and process all the pixels on the sensor. I believe the rest of Noob's comment was pretty clear. In other words, just hang on and wait for the final product. Meanwhile, get off the internet, grab your existing camera, and go out and shoot something. I think that one single "test" video has got way more attention that it actually deserves.1 point -

Andrew, If it helps you with the load, I can offer my time and experience to moderate the Anamorphic Forum. Having worked in the glass industry with three majors (including Pilkington Bros) and have offered good content in this area (about one in three of my posts get a like); my offer is on the table.1 point -

You need some level headed moderators to help you out, as its obvious that you aren't really coping. However, there does seem to be a rise in trolling, either for the fun of it or by arrogance or by accident! Not just here but everywhere - loads of forums seem to have become very very angry places. By trolling i mean derailing interesting posts (on purpose or not) & disrespectful replies which are normally done by people who are know-it-alls or just want to be right all the time or just want an arguement. And this can & has come from a variety of posters new & old (or should i say respected?). Also it would be nice to have a few extra stickies e.g. Andy Lee's Most useful lenses etc... or Lighting options on a budget (with examples of work done) etc...This could cut down on the repeated posts asking the same questions over & over & over again... No more selling, but that's been tried before.1 point -

I subscribe to the 'evolution' theory above. There are so many changes in the video market, one just can't google everything. I receive newsletters from Adobe, Avid, BMD, Apple, Panasonic, Sony, CreativeCow, NoFilmSchool, Wolfcrow and a bunch of german sites, but I learn faster and more from EOSHD. Here is how it works: Andrew shovels in articles. People leave their comments, many in the way of dogs who set their marks on new trees. But very quickly you have a broad scope of opinions, of aspects. They aren't reliable, many aren't even on topic, but in the end, one knows more.1 point

Sony A7S rolling shutter test
Ivan Lietaert reacted to FilmBrute for a topic
If the prosumer camera footage I watch on vimeo is indicative, 99% of the people who will buy this camera won't rack focus, let alone pan the camera. I'm pretty sure non professionals who buy multi thousand dollar cameras just buy stuff to produce test footage. In other words the A7s will be just fine for filming bridges, people walking, and sunsets. :P1 point -
It still can be. I've never seen a genuine opinion shut down on this site, regardless of how far it strays from conventional wisdom. I have found respectful disagreements to be welcome if not encouraged. With that said, I have also seen rudeness, cockiness, malice, and ill-temper attempting to pass itself off as "just a genuine opinion what's the big deal," and on that I agree with the overall sentiment of this post wholeheartedly - it needs to stop because it detracts greatly from the benefit you can get from scrutiny among friends. I would be in favor of stricter community moderation as a first step, with more aggressive steps taken as needed. There are plenty of other festering cesspools of partisan hatred on the internet. EOSHD is (and should continue to be) a place for honest, frank, respectful discourse.1 point

Hi, I'm both videographer and photographer. Recently I try to use BMPCC as a still photography tool. Ya it's experimental but it gives some nice and unique results and images. Why do this when there are 16-36Mpix cameras? see this post in my blog: http://kwaibun.asia/index.php/blackmagic-avant-garde-way-of-photography/ Kwai1 point
