EOSHD Moderating Team!

I am upgrading some members to moderator status. If they choose to exercise their newfound abilities, this upgrade comes with the ability to delete and lock posts as well as the all powerful, all conquering ability to ban members who misbehave! Thanks for their positive contributions to life here at EOSHD I am promoting RichG101, mtheory and jonpais to moderator status for the main forum and all sub-sections. It carries no extra work or obligations - exercising their privileges will be entirely at the discretion of the moderator. I'll continue as the main admin. But I think having extra eyes and ears plus a few more trusted people with the ability to clean up posts and ban members will help me a lot. Also since they expressed an interest, JohnBarlow will moderate the Anamorphic forum and Andy Lee will get his own sticky thread on lenses and lighting which may build into it's own forum section if it is successful. I'll create the moderator privileges later in the week. Any objections or any opt outs please have your say on this thread!1 point -

In video yes, the 5d3 has better low light capabilities, but not in photos. The d800 does line skipping on video, so, by not using all the pixels on the sensor, doesn't have the same performance in low light as in stills. but bear in mind that like giostrante said, canon and nikon have different iso values. and the reason they used noise reduction software in post to compare the two it was because canon does noise reduction on files even before they got to the card. after 3200 and 6400 canon video files start to become really soft, unlike nikon that retains all information, so by doing noise reduction in post on nikon files you can have a more fare comparison. For me, the d800 will always have the best pictures, and comparing the video from the internal codec's. Nikon has more sharpness and dynamic range, canon has better low light, yes, but all cameras need light, so if you give them light or fast lenses the difference in iso start to be less important. raw video it's a different story. btw, nikon has fixed the "green tint" lcd by firmware update, and if you complain about the hassle of ultra-large files, I don't even now why are you talking about raw video on the 5dmark3.1 point

Wow! I see a not bad at all iso performance here! Thanks for sharing this, i'm every day more sold on this camera! I'm not a colorist but for being a 8bit footage it seems to grade fairly well too. The lens is simply spectacular, and your cat is nice too! :D PS: "around 4000 iso " means 3200? 4000? 6400?1 point

Nikon D800 hacked with 50Mbit/s high bitrate video option

Of course you can spend a huge amount of money for an external monitor and some ultra expensive Zacuto stuff, OR you can make the perfect setup for less then 50 €!! All you need is this http://www.amazon.co.uk/Viewfinder-Extender-2-8x-Canon-Mark/dp/B009SXO5BK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397841866&sr=8-1&keywords=v1+viewfinder and this http://www.amazon.co.uk/CowboyStudio-Shoulder-Support-Camcorder-Camera/dp/B0036NMQ7S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1397842085&sr=8-1&keywords=shoulder+mount+Cowboystudio I can assure you, I'm shooting with d800 for more the one year now, in every kind of situation and this is a super reliable setup. With this kind of shoulder mount you can grab the camera with your right hand like when you shoot stills and use the left for focusing, very stable even when you're moving. The viewfinder has a x2,8 magnification factor and is perfect. Another great feature that the d800 has is the removable screen protector, you can buy a second one and put the viewfinder frame on it, as I did (see below). I can't believe people spend a bunch of money for a zacuto vew finder, it's crazy. Unless you're rich of course... Believe me, there's no need to buy an expensive rig, all you need is training. I can track focus on a 50mm f1,8 with no problem, all you really need are good lenses and a good tripod (a Manfrotto 055xprob with the hd 501 head is a perfect and cheap combo). And if you want to spend money buy an Atomos Ninja for hdmi uncompressed, that is a good purchase. Don't listen who will say "this is a cheap rig, it can't be good", check the Musgo trailer on the web, is a film made with an hacked gh2 and this shoulder mount. And look how is cute my d800 with viewfinder!1 point -

hey there! how does the reds tan .25 compare to the tokina .4, both in terms of added sharpness and CA reduction; and focus range? I have the Tokina and it's great, but would love some more control of focus range. Thanks!1 point -

I can't help but think using something like a C100 would give you a better quality image with a similar price and setup with a lot easier workflow. The full-frame look is hard to beat, though.1 point -

You have no ideal what you are talking about, the size of the sensor ddoe not equate cinema cinema quality image, that has more to do with dynamic range and uncompressed color gamut . Also the sharpness is not a downside, alot of the footage you see depends on types of lens used. You brag about owning Zeiss when any true film make knows that Cooke or old nikon lens would suit an image better than a zeiss lens when it comes to contrast, do your research before making comments that you know nothing about.1 point -

STOP IT!!! Andrew i enjoy coming to this site and find it very informative at times, but to say that the d800 with 50mbit or even external video is close to Magic Lantern RAW on mark 2 or 3 is absolutely absurd, stop it. There is no way that an 8bit camera especially the nikon d800 cabale of producing anything close to raw 14 bit footage, yes under good lighting conditions the d800 produces a decent image but decent at best.1 point -
Which interview are those? What is said in them? Could you possibly link to them or remember their names?1 point

Andrew great test, as always. How video AF works on GH4 with third party lenses? Is it possible to use speedboster and i.e. Sigma 18-35 (nikon mount) with video AF?1 point

Good move, but guys, I have been using forums for 15 years and one thing I always noticed was that the forums with high levels of moderation became boring, and the ones with light moderation were always more fun. I think that banning somebody should only be done as a last resort when somebody REALLY crosses the line, not just for one or two offensive posts. Otherwise this forum will have a reputation for being up-tight (like the RED forums) and not free-flowing and fun. Just my two cents...1 point -
Compact Anamorphic for BMPCC

Baby Isco, but the quality is no where near up to scratch compared to its bigger siblings. If you can live without dual focus (I certainly can) then the best quality small adapter is the Bolex Moller 8/19/1.5x, simply incredible images.1 point -
Iscorama 54 Aperture test with Achromats & Diopters
Lucian reacted to Bioskop.Inc for a topic
As I said the Super-Tak 55mm f1.8 & 35mm f3.5 are v.good for sharpness. The Russain lenses can be a bit of a crap shoot quality-wise & the Mir 1b does seem to be the weakest link (still nice though), but have you tried the Mir 24 35mm f2 (it comes in Nikon or M42 & is MC) its much better. The other Russains that i like are the Tair 11a, Jupiter 9 ( a 85mm f2 - dreamy wide open like the Helios 40-2) & the classic Helios 44-2. The Yashica ML lenses are good on a budget or if you've got the money Zeiss Contax (obviously). I've recently switched cameras to the BM Pocket & have been using a Nikon 24mm f2.8 ai-s which is proving to be excellent (will post a grading test soon), so am really tempted to go the whole hog & get a set. However, I love my Russain lenses & would rather wait a little to see if the Canon EF Speedbooster gets released. On a slightly different note, I got the chance to see the original box for the 54 & it did state that it was optimised to be used with Zoom lenses as well as Primes. So I've been really tempted to try this out with either the Angenieux 35-70mm + speedbooster or the Meteor 5-1 16-69mm f1.9 (a 16mm film lens) - probably the later as its way cheaper & Russain. The Helios 40-2 is a lovely lens & the swirly bokeh wide-open is to die for & a test chart isn't the same as actually filming with it - love it, just can't use it with the Pocket cam. I've got one of his Angenieux single +0.25, but your doublet really sharpens things up nicely - i was really tempted to get one. Anyways, nice test & thanks for the ProRes version!1 point
