  1. I've been playing with the GH4 for a while now. I'll share my video's here. Shot a lot more material, still have to edit/upload it. Will do so in the following days. Go over to Vimeo/YouTube for all the details in the lenses/profiles/settings used. You can download 4K files or high bitrate on Vimeo. Cinema 4K mode - sunset and lowlight. The 14mm makes razorsharp 4K images. Also used a cheap 200mm f/3.5 Vivitar lens. Hard to get the focus exactly right and maybe not really suitable for 4K. For the video on Vimeo I used pretty high iso values. Shots with the birds are 3200 for example. 96 fps slomo test: with shallow dof shots it is pretty sharp. I have some slomo sufing shots as well, the resolution looks less good with very detailed scenes. Short test shot at ISO6400 in C4K. Anamorphic test with Minolta MD 28mm f/2.8 and Petit Cinevision 1.5x

  2. Hard to see what the subjects are doing through that overwhelming lens flare. What is it exactly? Looks like two Dolphins and a CHP police officer trying to wrestle a giraffe in flip flops. Am I right?

  5. The AX100 is of a species we thought extinct in the filmmaking world... the consumer camcorder. I had a brief hands on with the camera to find out how much of it is high resolution point and shoot and how much cinema camera. Read the full article here

  7. Inazuma, From the preproduction videos we seen (here from Andrew and elsewhere) Looking at 1/3 stop better performance (yes not a massive amount) - so image quality has been improved and so too the noise characterists. But its not a mega leap over the GH3 (at 1080) Andrew has taken the time to upload examples to Vimeo - AND provide the source files via links to copy.com (or some hosting thingy he has) Don't make the mistake I made and rely on the Vimeo/YouTube videos - you really need to download the originals and have a look. However, taking the 4k image from the camera and downsampling it to 1080 via your NLE, you will notice a nice difference in 1080 quality :) Back to shipping... I bet BHPhoto and Adorama will be shipping next week too, can't believe it only one of the big retailers to have obtained stock. Both of these are closed for this long weekend... Fingers crossed for Tuesday eh!

  9. I wonder if you could glue two chinese speedbooster infront of the sensor to use some decent lenses on it.

  12. Much further along with my A6000 experience now since the introductory blog.   The codec has real issues. Lots of banding and mud. A very bad implementation of AVCHD I'm afraid. AVCHD can be good. On the FS100 it's fine! What a shame Sony do not pull a Panasonic and give us a proper codec on their stills cameras.   There is still some moire and aliasing too but then it's now more in-line with other cameras, and certainly not as bad as before. Better than the A7 for sure.   It's still a nice camera for the price but the D5300 will give you a better image.

  13. A bit off topic but I just spent a day with the D5300. Whereas the Sony video had little to talk about over the gh2, i really like the 5300 image. It doesn't have the crunchy detailed sharpness of the gh2 but its nowhere near as soft as the canon apscs. Dynamic range seems better than a6000 and high iso is remarkable. Bit blocky in the shadows when you try to recover detail, but compared to gh2 at least it has detail to recover.

  14. I had Simon Westland of BlackMagic Design go over the URSA and Studio cameras. Just a guess here, but I wouldn't be surprised if they put that 1" 4K chip into a sucessor of the Pocket camera. Perhaps it wont be that long until it happens.

  15. I will be making extensive posts on lenses.... new... old, vintage... cheap and expensive and what their main good points are and how to get the best out of them. And also some useful articles on general lens use that will help improve your shooting and make things more dare I say more 'cinematic' and less 'video' which seems to be what alot are asking for. so say tuned folks and watch this space......

  16. indeed. speed is slightly different (particularly if uniform sensor coverage is important. Wide open an f2.8 medium format 80mm lens will usually be twice as bright in the corners as an 80mm f2.8 135 format lens. the 135 80mm will show around 1 stop of vignette on the edges. the medium format lens will be a lot less - probably not measurable. I imagine the helios 40 will have almost 2 stops of darkening at the edge of a full frame sensor, though I have not used one, its highly likely. this in combinaton with its over stretched optics are the reason it looks so beautiful.
