Surprise! Sony Alpha A6000 video mode huge improvement
IronFilm and 2 others reacted to Glenn Thomas for a topic
Thanks for all the insights here. After shooting more than 50 music videos with my NEX5N, some idiot broke into our house yesterday while I was having a shower and stole it, along with my iPad 2. Thankfully the camera only had my old Nikon f2.8 28mm lens on it. They left behind the charger with spare battery, Lens Turbo and other lenses. So I've just decided to get this A6000. To be honest, I never really had a problem with the image quality I was getting from the NEX5N. A bit of aliasing here and there, some loss of detail if I used noise reduction on low light shots, etc. But I never had an EVF, the thing always overheated, the LCD had a big splotch mark in the centre as I'd never bought a screen protector for it, it didn't have zebras, and I never had a kit lens which would have been good for travelling. So the A6000 with a kit lens seems like the perfect replacement. And affordable too, as money I've made from a couple of videos this past week will easily cover the cost. From reading this thread though, I'll agree some of the Panasonics may have better image quality. The Nikon 5300 too. Although I've never owned a DSLR, and never will. I really need that focus peaking. With the NEX5N, as long as I could see a red spot in someone's eyes, I knew my focus was good. And with the Lens Turbo, I can get that full frame look if I need it. Which wouldn't be possible with any m43 camera, or even the 5300. One other thing I do is always shoot in 50P, normally with a 1/100 shutter. Unless it's something on green screen. For music videos, being able to slow down a clip really easily I find to be a lot more important than a few possible artifacts the intended audience will never see. That slow mo can add emotion to a clip that you wouldn't get at normal speed. And for that reason, none of the affordable Blackmagic cameras are an option for me either. Or any affordable 4K camera. Better to wait until they can all do 4K 50P and without the rolling shutter. And to improve image quality, I use Neat Video followed by Boris BCC film grain. Anyway, apologies for the rant, but I guess my point here is to not be too concerned about image quality, artifacts and all that, but to go for whatever camera has the most features that are important to you. In my case those are compatibility with existing lenses (including my Lens Turbo), portability, focus peaking, a file format that's simple to edit (AVCHD files work great in Sony Vegas!), good low light performance, and 50P. In which case, this A6000 appears to be my best option. I'm hoping to pick one up later today. After I enquire about getting some security screens for our windows :)3 points -
B Roll Camera Recommendation for G6
Nick Hughes and one other reacted to Inazuma for a topic
If you can afford another G6, why wouldn't you? Keep using the same workflow, same lenses. The cameras will have the same colour renditions, etc.2 points -
Free music and soundscapes for your projects
P4INKiller reacted to Eric Matyas for a topic
Hi everyone, I've got a new site up and running to try to help indie filmmakers, students, and anyone who needs original royalty free production music for their youtube videos, student films, games, presentations, home videos, etc. The cost of licensing music today is truly outragous, so I'm trying to do what I can to help people express their ideas and visions. www.soundimage.org Any feedback, suggestions, etc., are welcome (and greatly appreciated!) Thanks, Eric1 point -
This might be obvious to some of you. It wasn't to me. By default the GH4 records in 16-255. So that's what I shot my video's in. Turns out, you have to do some stuff to recover the 'super whites', if you don't do it you end up with crushed highlights. This guy took some original footage from Vimeo (yes, I'm flattered by the compliments I got on my cat ;)) and made a tutorial about it. Awesome stuff, must see! The bad news, I have to re-edit all my videos and upload them again ;) Also check out his website: http://www.florisliesker.nl/ This guy makes great stuff.1 point

£1,300 with the Tokina ATX +0.4 Achromat Dioptre...I have the same combination and it's beautiful. Even if it doubled in value from £1,300....you'd have to prise it out of my cold dead hands :). Good luck with buying one, they are magnificent.1 point

Not mine, but you can find it if you look for it. I think it's a combination plenty people use. Especially on BlackMagic camera's. I think this is on a GH3 (11-16mm + Speed Booster) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6Wr5RZM7QE1 point

Isn't the A7s not coming out until the fall? The GH4 is out now.1 point

And you don't want shoot wide either. If the person moves back and forth out of focus you won't notice on your camera LCD. That embarrassment will be saved for later ;)1 point

there are these things called lights ! stick 2 Redheads either side of the person being interviewed and f5.6 is just fine... I have done 100s of corporate interview talking head films in my time and NEVER have I turned up without lights indoors - you would just get laughed off the job ..... I would not advise anyone doing talking head interviews with just available light - it will not look professional ... get a set of lights to do this properly http://www.ebay.com/itm/Professional-Studio-Video-Continuous-Lighting-Kit-800w-Red-Head-with-Dimmer-x-2-/111125966407?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item19df9fae471 point

The .RW2 files open if you change the file to GH2 as well. I think most people believed the GH2 sensor was from Panasonic, so I don't think changing Exif data proves the sensor one way or another.1 point -
Andy- I have it. Its sharp enough, but that's NOT what the OP is asking about. They want something suited for indoor interview situations, and the kit, while being pretty sharp for a kit, is not fast enough to be well suited. At 42mm (since you don't go wide on an interview), it only opens up to f/5.6, which I don't need to tell you pretty much stinks. I'd never go smaller than an f/2.8 in that sort of situation, and even on the widest end it only opens up to 3.5. If you think this kit is an ideal interview lens, I think you're kidding yourself!1 point

It will look better as soon as you touch the colors ,contrast and/or sharpening , the macro blocks pop right in your face. Also the shadows look cleaner so you can underexpose and use flat profiles.1 point

it's an idea i've wondered about since i was a kid playing with prisms and pinhole cameras.. why do you have to commit to a specific focal point if all the light is available in the area of a circle.. why couldn't you just record all the light? this is basically what they have done, but in order to be able to focus later, you have to also record the vectors that the light is traveling in.. this is why that lens is fixed, you need an array of light sensors. here's the paper that was done by the founder while he was at Stanford, before the company was launched: https://www.lytro.com/downloads/resources/renng-thesis.pdf it's not new in theory but to make a consumer camera it required all the other digital components to exist. from what i understand the difficulty really is in developing the algorithms specific to this novel device. and i do think it's a game changer.. there are really interesting interactive implications too.. you could develop a file format that contains scatter light vector info - or whatever they are calling it - and work with mozilla and google on a plugin. it's gonna be a big file, but how cool would it be to have all images online be capable of focus. add hdri to the format and it's starting to feel like a bad sci-fi movie set in the not too distant future.1 point

I don't use resolve but It's highly likely it's image caching based on your viewer settings.. if you have to load frames before you get realtime playback, probably that's it. well hot damn.. check it out: from the davinci resolve website "Real time On-The-Fly extremely high quality proxy generation without disk cache."1 point -
Fixed lens and only still images. If this would do 1080p 24/25 fps it would be a game changer for video for sure! Pulling focus in post... Would be amazing! For stills it's still a gimmick IMO. Fun to embed those interactive iframes where you can change the focus, but what is the real use of that? It's a big step up from the first version indeed. Might be very interesting for cinematography if this develops more.1 point

"This one goes to eleven". One should seize every opportunity to see this awesomeness :) I wonder if this is true for GX7 as well, which is supposedly using the same sensor.1 point -
Trump FF58 1.5X Oval Aperture + Iscorama 1.5X = 2X the ovals, 2X the fun?
dahlfors reacted to Rob Bannister for a topic
Hello everyone, These are just some random snaps cut together using the DSO Trump FF58 with a 1.5X oval aperture inside, combined with the iscorama 1.5X anamorhic. Simulating the bokeh of a 2X anamorphic.. Anyways I thought some of the shots looked pretty good an wanted to share. Pretty cool being able to shoot this on a D800 and not go to wide like 3.25:1 Password is buds1 point -

Best DSLR For Property Video?
Nick Hughes reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Here's a "low-res-for-web" video I did as a quick favor for a friend a few years back. Shot on a Rebel Ti, no lights. It's far from perfect, but shows how available light can be utilized with some shooting strategy and concessions:1 point -
