GH4 Concert Footage
nib187 and one other reacted to AaronChicago for a topic
I had my GH4 with me Friday night at a concert and shot some semi low light footage. Most shots are C4K scaled to HD with a 2.35:1 crop. A few shots are FHD 60p slowed down. Shot in Cinelike D -5,-5,-5,-5. Graded with FilmConvert. You might see a few strobing lights due to dimmed LED's on stage. It showed up no matter what shutter speed I used. Overall I'm loving it.2 points -
BMPCC vs GM1
petar jelev and one other reacted to Inazuma for a topic
The 550d was my first camera. When I look back at footage I shot using that camera, I can see a clear difference in quality between it and my subsequent cameras (Sony NEX 6, Nikon d5200, Panasonic GX7). It is clearly inferior in detail, aliasing/moire and noise. The stills were good, but not better than those others cameras. DXOMark's ratings are a bit faulty. For example, the Nikon d800 and Sony A7 are tooted as having amazing high ISO performance. But when I look at dpreview.com's comparison gallery, I can see the Canon 6d and 5dMk3 are clearly better in high ISO. Thanks for your post maxotics :) The BMPCC is for sure a nice little camera, but for the most part I don't see why you wouldnt be able to get the look of it using your GM1 and some grading.2 points -
BMPCC vs GM1
Bartek Beben reacted to maxotics for a topic
As much as I love the BMPCC, and I do, I can no longer ignore how much time and effort I work on shooting, copying and grading the footage. Video is secondary for me. So I bought a GM1 based on Andrew's insight and have to agree that when time is at a premium I can get more done with the GM1. I'm going to sell my BMPCC because I know I'll be tortured knowing it's here. If I was making films, there is NO WAY I would do this. The BMPCC is an extraordinary camera. It is truly a "cinema" camera. What surprised me about the GM1 is how small it is. It makes the BMPCC look big. That gave me a laugh. The physical dial is very delicate (con). The smartphone app is what I've always wanted (plus). The image is much better than the GF3. I wish I had the GX7, but I saw a GM1 body used, for cheap, so that's what I got. Still, the image from it is nothing sort of phenomenal. IMHO it blows the d600 video out of the water. I'm surprised they got a MFT sensor to do as well as it does in low light. So, tail between my legs, I go back to H.264 land. Thanks Andrew ;) Top Reasons I'm switching 1. Copy, grading is very time consuming. My hard-drives over-floweth. 2. As soon as I start shooting I worry about running out of card space, battery, etc. 3. The screen is not good enough to make me confident I have focus 4. If I run up against moire I may have to degrade the image to h.264 type quality 5. Davinci Resolve has been buggy lately. I question BM's support of camera. Took them days to respond to support request. 6. 3x crop factor is a killer because I like wide lenses 7. Center button brings up slate if not clicked double for focus zoom, annoying. Audio is not good. Little quibbles everyone writes about. Again, I love this camera. It's just too much for me. BTW, the "silent shutter" feature of the camera is something I would now struggle to give up if I changed my mind.1 point -

Modular cameras are the future- feature film "Under the Skin" built their own
Aussie Ash reacted to Lucian for a topic
Interesting, this may have had something to do with it. I was so impressed and affected by a lot of elements of it, it was original and like an accessible art film. but the edit was like a bloated rough cut, like nails on a blackboard after a while. Every shot lingering two, three, four times as long as necessary. I'm not a low attention span blockbuster viewer either, I predominately watch older films and art films so I am all for lingering moments, but if its every shot it just gets grating. People were squirming all through the second half in the cinema I was in. I hope some day a leaner version of the film gets cut as it could be a classic.1 point -

BMPCC or GH4?

you need a workhorse camera that allows run & gun, so no no doubt the GH4.1 point -
GH4 focus peaking
johnnymossville reacted to andy lee for a topic
the sharper your lens the better the peaking is Carl Zeiss Planar 50mm f1.7 is peaking heaven , blue lines everywhere as its so sharp so on older legacy lenses (60's 70's and 80's) you tend to get less peaking on screen, its a trade off ..... Modern Panny lenses are great lots of peaking all the time1 point -
The BMPCC isn't well-suited for long-form video. To get the best out of it, you're shooting DNG at about 4 gig a minute. It will give the best low-light performance, in my opinion, because the image is uncompressed, so shadow noise become film-like grain. However, the problem with RAW video is that IF you're getting the benefits out of it you're getting an image you can't get with other compression-in-camera cameras--so matching becomes a problem. It becomes your A-cam and your b-cams look too contrasty. The crop factor of the BMPCC is 3x, vs 2x of the MFT. So a NIkon 24mm becomes 72mm on the BMPCC and 48mm on the GH4. It's a drag! BMPCC internal audio is not really usable, so plan on syncing everything in post. When the Sony a7s comes out, that should be an exciting camera for that kind of work. The ability to re-frame a 1080 image, from the 4k image, in the gH4 would probably be VERY helpful in weddings and concerts.1 point

I don't think there some dedicated cage for the g6, but a generic one like the Gearbox GB2 can work: http://www.photographyandcinema.com/collections/camera-cage/products/gearbox-gb-2-video-accessory-cage-w-15mm-rod-adapter1 point

GH4 Concert Footage
AaronChicago reacted to Michael1 for a topic
I'm no colorist, but that frame grab looks really nice as is. I am also impressed with the amount of detail. You can see the strands of her hair, and if you zoom in, the pattern in her vest. There is a little bit of noise, but no much. Your music video looks great, It's nice to see what can be done with a GH4 in the right hands. Michael1 point -

Massive Audio Problem - Help Desperately Needed
Aussie Ash reacted to HurtinMinorKey for a topic
If it's a consistent whine there should be a straightforward solution. Most noise reduction program's allow you to take a sample that includes only the background noise (it doesn't need to be that long) and it will take it right out. http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/noisereduction ^ this is overpriced but you should be able to find the older versions for free on the internets (if you are on PC). They are just as good. Also, A version of it may come bundled free with SoundForge which is now available on MAC. SoundForge is fucking awesome, btw. Adobe Audition (which you get with creative cloud) also has a version of noise reduction that uses the same technique http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/easy_noise-nuking_with_sound_forge_9 ^ This describes the process. Either way it will probably take some finagling. But i've used Sony Noise reduction and SoundForge to save takes for lead vocals that sounded like absolute crap because of terrible background noise. If you want to upload the audio (or small portion of it) i'd be willing to take a crack at it.1 point -

Nice work, that sigma is a beast.1 point -
I have a 550d and it is a great first dslr. Canon to me do have a good look with good colours. It has the advantage of phase detect focus for stills (as long as you only use the center focus point and use the focus and reframe technique). But I wouldn't describe it as a small and compact camera. It's compact in the sense that you can carry it round with one hand, but compared to the GM1 it is humongous. You will end up taking the GM1 out more because it is smaller. You may want to look at the EOS M. Its bigger than the GM1 but more compact than a dslr but with practically the same canon sensor. The 22mm lens is also really compact and sharp. Whatever you get make sure you shoot raw for stills. The video on the canons - while having a good overall look - wont be as detailed as the GM1 and may have more aliasing. Overall it will probably an idea to look at what kind of lenses you will want and look at the systems as a whole comparing size, weight, functionality and price.1 point

Rigs for DSLR's?

Looks pretty decent. The grip is exactly the same as my P&C grip, but the shoulder brace is probably better than my own invention. Thanks for your a6000 notes by the way - very helpful.1 point -
Massive Audio Problem - Help Desperately Needed
Aussie Ash reacted to pablogrollan for a topic
Glad to try to help you. It would be easier if you uploaded a clip of the messed up audio and the same clip from the shotgun mic -that way we could see which one is easier to fix, removing the hiss or boosting the shotgun-. In the past I've used programs as Izotope to fix problems that were a real challenge, so who knows... Small tip: always monitor the recording device. Any other monitoring on any stage of the sound "chain" is useless since you don't know what's actually being recorded. Could it have been cable noise/connector noise from the Beachtek to the A99? If you post a Wetransfer link or a Google Drive link for example, I'll try my best...1 point -
