Panasonic GH4 vs Sony A7S compared - who wins the 4K battle on paper?
yiomo and 3 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I have seen some externally recorded A7S footage which is secret for now. The friend can't publish yet. I have to say I am absolutely blown away by it. The low light performance and dynamic range transformed the image... the shadows when graded were silky smooth with a fine noise grain, but it had latitude to catch the illumination realistically... and when the light source bounced against the shadows it looked like film... very nice. I believe it was shot externally to an Atomos Ninja... no signs of moire or aliasing and detail was good...a little soft and filmic but not exactly lacking in fine details and would sharpen nicely.4 points -
Surprise! Sony Alpha A6000 video mode huge improvement
Kwstas Poulios and one other reacted to Glenn Thomas for a topic
I'm not saying it's not there, but it's not visible unless you pause the video and specifically go looking for problems. Those water fountain grilles had the worst aliasing and moire out of all 55 or so videos I shot on the NEX5N. The fact that I can't see any in shots of the same grilles in the A6000 footage tells me it's no longer a problem I ever have to worry about. Not in those shots, the shot with the fine line brick wall after it, or even in the grilles of the fan on the footpath in another later shot. If I play the Cineform master file and pause it, yes, I can see some really tiny stair stepping around the water fountains with excessive motion, but those are obviously AVCHD artifacts. And I really had to look closely and put my eye up to the screen to see them! Detail isn't everything. I get clients asking me to smooth out their skin, and that's after I've used Neat Video. Andrew, I've seen a number of your videos with video like overexposed shots. But if that's the look you're after, no problem there. For a lot of us though, avoiding shots like that would be a lot more important than the difference in detail between an A6000, GX7, 5D mk3, etc. And some of us may wonder why Philip Bloom with his collection of expensive cameras would over sharpen his cat? Of course maybe it's the cat who prefers looking a bit sharper than the average feline? It's all personal preference. So it's good for the Panasonic fans to know their cameras have more detail, even if they have to use an adapter for that APSC Super 35 look. And for those of us with a Sony, rather than worrying about having less detail than the Panasonic cameras, we can be happy about getting a full frame look from one of those adapters. Or better yet, shoot, edit, and ignore all this nonsense :)2 points -
Potential film score licenses from EOSHD
nahua reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I am in talks with some professional musicians and film scorers here in Berlin and have discovered some real talent... The average quality of their work far exceeds the current music licensing libraries and it is more original, more interesting. I am thinking therefore some kind of music licensing service might be useful to offer on EOSHD especially with the Vimeo copyright problem filmmakers are facing. I don't want to see people sued for copyright infringement when they are just trying to express themselves and their art. Some of the pros I know here are doing really high end audio - we're talking Hans Zimmer & feature film standard. However these are professionals and we need to pay them. It is simply not going to wash using a track for free that took them 6 months of recording time in studios that charge $400 per day. I'm wondering what a fair and acceptable rate would be for licensing? I want it to start low to be accessible to artists but scale up to commercial work in the right way. Typical prices at the Music Bed range from a minimum of $50 for non-profit to $399 for commercial work and for larger scale commercial work custom quotes are required. EOSHD music licensing would be different. For personal work or zero budget short films on Vimeo / YouTube (non-commercial) $19 - 1 track $50 - 5 tracks $99 - 10 tracks For commercial work - small clients (<10 employees) and non-profit organisations $50 - 1 track $99 - 5 tracks $199 - 10 tracks For commercial work - large clients (>10 employees) and advertisements $199 - 1 track $399 - 5 tracks Custom quote - 10 tracks For features, documentaries and short films with a crew $199 - 1 track $499 - 5 tracks Custom quote - 10 tracks Of course before you buy you can play all tracks in full on EOSHD to see if they are what you need. I'd like some feedback on this first before I decide to go ahead with it or not as the amount of work involved here is very significant. In particular what do you need from such a service? What projects do you need music for... And what do you think of the pricing? Cheers!1 point -
maybe you'd like to check this out: http://savefilm.org I now this is a forum for digital cameras but maybe here are some filmshooters as well...? However I apologize if you consider this as spam and if not thank you very much! I love film :)1 point

Vimeo to automatically mute videos with 'unlicensed' soundtracks
andy lee reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
That's unfortunate that eleison wimped out at the last second... I had a witty reply waiting. Maybe he does not in fact work, but sits around all day downloading music for free. But maybe he has a day job in an office working long shifts and expecting to get paid at the end... My suggestion is that he tries working unpaid and see if he likes it! As that is what he seems to think some musicians should put up with!1 point -
Well, I found that shooting digital is tiring for me. And that characteristic isn't minor but major to me! I admit, that for example BMPCC is great. The RAW image looks great. But it's way to clinical! Sterile. Yes, its matter of tase, and I love the filmistock imperfection. Thats something digital will never have! It's too good. And it's funny how many videos around try to fake the imperfection and film look.1 point

My short Panasonic GH4 film
Henry Gentles reacted to Musty for a topic
Hey everyone, I got my GH4 the first week of May here in the UK and so far I've been blown away by the image. I came from a 5D MKIII and I can't say that I feel like I'm missing much at the moment. Although I did shoot ML RAW on the 5D, I can't say I miss the workflow and the occasional camera crash... its so good to be shooting 4K without worrying that its going to crap out during a take. I think I will add a Speedbooster and Sigma 18-35mm next! Anyway, here is my first few days out with the GH4 around some famous London landmarks. Hope you are enjoying your GH4's!1 point -
Probably digital is already superior to film quality wise but... there is so much more about film: Well stored film lasts for your whole lifetime and can ever be reproduced (also with a device built of LEGO :) ) Shooting film is totally different as you have to think twice. David Lynch pointed out that actors seem to work more determined/concentratde when shot on film For my latest Super-8 project I shot 10minutes of footage which cost me more than €250,- So this is something worthy and that makes it special. When I capture video it is always too much. I am tired of watching hours of rubbish. For some reason film is more artistic for me. I also like to cut with scissors and project film (just watched a great documentary from 1971 - even my 18 year old son was impressed). The most important thing is maybe that my brain is analogue and analogue is more pleasing to me. I also prefer records instead of CDs :) Regarding the above mentioned new camera - There is such thing: It is called "Logmar" and produces stunning images with Super-8. This looks absolutely like 16mm when you choose some of the new negative stock. And there is no (NO!) flicker at all :o But sometimes I also like digital and it is fine for me but at least I have to use some less sharp lenses and some anamorphic glass to reduce the cold clinical sharpness. Just a matter of taste :)1 point

Animated color correction cheat sheet using plot scanlines.. This source footage was shot on Arri Alexa and taken off the 2k 10bit 4:2:2 master. For their surveillance footage they used: Canon 7D, GoPro HD Hero, Sony PMW-EX11 point -

Yes I agree, but dang, those little things are expensive! You can buy a used L lens for the same price. I want one, but not for $400 plus dollars.1 point -

I used to own a R1 MX. I thought if took outstanding footage that no DSLR could touch in terms of colorspace and DR. If I were in the market, I'd buy one over the new BMC shoulder cam or AJA scion. You'd probably score one for 7-8 grand US.1 point -

You were given an answer in a nearby thread which you've probably missed. Yet again, that "transfer rate" is just how much data you get for every pixel when you record internally. Compressor efficiency and workflow not taken into account, so that's just useless conceptual pixel peeping with theoretic pixels. There is no equivalence, unless you're trying to say "if i put off 2 wheels from my car, its equivalent speed would double". Or, as they say, if grandma had balls, she would be grandpa.1 point

Panasonic GH4 Review
jurgen reacted to Claes Lind for a topic
Thanks for the review Andrew, great read! Really excited to see what June 3rd is all about! An EF Speedbooster with electronic connection would be amazing. I've had my GH4 for about a week now using a focal reducer that does the job, but aperture control and IS would be nice. Here's my first test, shot the day after I got the camera and could put a lens on it with the focal reducer I got off of Ebay. Tried out the VFR mode and I must say I'm really impressed. My expectations were a lot lower after reading people's opinions and watching their tests. So excited to see what this camera is capable off1 point -

Correct, commercial work = paid work. Reward the musician not just yourself :)1 point -
I love the look of film, sadly I've never been able to make a production with it. I've put countless hours into digital production and post processes, just to try and emulate the look and feel, because I love it's non-linearity, spirit and heart. I do shoot still photographic film though and love it. One hopes that somehow, film motion picture will have a resurrection outside of Hollywood, and become more convenient to use somehow, by way of new technologies...1 point
