The EOSHD Music Challenge
ArSui Li reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
I would like to give my platform to up and coming musicians around the world to showcase their music through my cinematography to an audience of around 250,000 people per month. This is the EOSHD Music Challenge. Readers act as DJ - they can pick music from up and coming singers and bands, with suggestions that might suit the mood of my cinematography and future camera tests. Cinematic music is really important to me but I haven't been satisfied with The Music Bed or similar resources so far. How does the challenge work? 1. Suggest a band or musician on this thread. They have to be up and coming not signed to a major label or already huge. 2. I investigate and do the contacting of those which I like and credit you for the find! 3. If they agree to let me use their music, they will find a new audience through my blog and hopefully sell some tracks on iTunes from a link on EOSHD. You will be designated as the discoverer of talent and winner of the challenge. 4. You can have fun with this challenge and play DJ - use your taste to select the right standard of music to fit EOSHD and in turn you might discover new music yourself which you really enjoy listening to. 5. My cinematography at EOSHD is purely an artistic endeavour and experimental, non commercial and does not make any money but for all videos featuring unsigned acts I will consider enabling the Vimeo Tip Jar and sharing the proceeds with the musician 50:50! This is a new idea and it will start off as a trial. If it works then great! If not then we will swap things around until it does, because I am determined to find new music and up and coming artists. Good soundtracks are really important for filmmakers and I believe in finding new talent. Perhaps you know some artists yourself? Perhaps you are one?1 point -
Having it sitting for a long time, I said to finally give it a try, as until now it was impossible to get any info about it, or even so to find a video made with this rare beast. Quick test of the Moller Anamorphot 30/2x, on an Oly E-M1. I have to admit that wasn't that easy to work with it, it's big like an Iscorama, not easy to use just an anamorphic clamp and I always prefer smaller anamorphics to play with, so I don't have the proper rig solution for this Moller. But the image quality that comes out of it, puts it (at least) beside Iscorama. Any comment is welcome, this lens is a miracle:1 point

I don't think he meant the speed booster has OIS, only that it communicates with the camera to power the OIS of the lens :) either way, I just want the thing announced!1 point -
Continuity and Editing problems in "The Dark Knight"

Right, it's not an all-sum proposition, which is how most inter web discussions seem to go. Finding legitimate flaws in the production doesn't mean that an actual movie isn't worthwhile on other levels. If you're not a discriminating viewer of movies, fine. But if you want to be something of a film maker you should at least try to be so. Knowing why Kurosawa is superior to a contemporary studio guy like Bay matters. As an aspiring film maker of any legitimate level you gotta try to know why, understand why, and appreciate why. This particular BatMan movie production was a beast of logistics and it does look like some chaos and unwieldiness of the production ended up on screen. Or maybe it's just me... Establishing the "geography" of a scene and allowing for coherent action is out of favor these days with a-list films. Bombast trumps cohesion. I'll take a 3 minute single pan wide shot of 2,000 extras and horses ransacking Aqaba in real time rather than 300 .5 second edits with 2 dozen explosions.1 point -

SpeedBooster with OIS and all the bells and whistles is coming, I'm telling 'ya! This will be huge. It that case I might even sell some of my Samyang/Rokinon glass collection and get a Tamron 24-70. I bought the Samyangs only for the reason that I was not able to control Canon glass.1 point -
Little test video I shot with it. Just a few quick shots, so not great (had a hard time focusing on the 1200D - the dof is big so everything looks in focus on the screen, but it's hard to see where the critical focus really is) Edited image (10mm f/6.3 I think), shot with Canon 1200D (raw): Full res sample pictures here (in the slide show, use the options menu to download them full res).1 point

Yes indeed, I did think that, but I would never pick it for events or reportage, so I neglected to mention. I'd go with a 1080p camcorder like C100 or FS100 at least, just because they do it all without workarounds! For the kind of stuff I'd use it for, more narrative and promo, I can't imagine it's a huge problem, but still quite a bummer. It doesn't inspire confidence...1 point

Editor's note: While the GH4 guide takes pride of place on my home page I am using the forum as the regular EOSHD news-feed and blog-roll. This YouTube story puts the Vimeo copyright stuff into a whole new light. Apparently YouTube are launching a streaming music service to compete with Spotify. It's subscription based and ad-free, but the royalties Google want to pay to the musicians is miniscule. We're talking REALLY minuscule here, and Spotify is no angel. Radiohead took steps to withdraw their music from Spotify when they saw the fees. Google is a much larger, much more cash-rich company, yet their royalties for streaming are smaller than Spotify. On the one hand YouTube has enormous traffic, so the stakes are high. Google with their business head are right to drive a hard bargain with the music industry on this... Especially because the platform is the number 1 promotional channel for the music industry. Because of that, Billy Bragg has accused YouTube of trying to 'strong-arm' record labels into accepting extremely low royalties for the subscription fee music service... I.e. if you don't join the service, you won't be welcome to promote your artists. I can see how it works two ways for the record labels, but the problem for them is that streaming long term is going to replace record sales. How the hell are they supposed to make money? All the free promotion in the world is useless if you have to sell everything for a pittance. It gives you an idea perhaps of a potential strategy the music industry is using with Vimeo. Stung by YouTube's low streaming rates and a minuscule share of advertising revenue, they are holding a gun to the head of Vimeo in order to (I think) to drive a hard bargain when it comes to allowing their music to be streamed on Vimeo clips. Already I feel safer uploading a non-commercial artistic video of my own to YouTube knowing that at least (in some minuscule way) the record label and artist are getting paid, via advertising. I don't like advertising on my videos but it's better than not being able to exercise artistic freedom in music selection and having Vimeo reject the video outright and not give a penny to the music industry for use of the song. If YouTube can up their rates to the music industry, then the advertising revenue will go a long way to freeing up visual artists in terms of using the music... The musician gets paid, the record label gets paid, both get exposure and the visual artist gets a career leg up and the video isn't compromised by lack of choice on the sound track. Seems like a perfect deal to me... Let's pressure Google into making it happen. I'm totally with the small record labels on this one. Happened to me once. Had to take out battery. Turning the camera to off couldn't turn it off. Very annoying.1 point

It's all relative and there's also big name TV shows offering nothing for new bands' music, just promising exposure, which can turn out to be good, but it's still a terrible system. Record labels spent 10 years fighting the digital formats, now that they realized they should have embraced them instead, they're totally lost and have no clue what they're doing, the rules have completely changed, and no one knows exactly what the new rules are, because things are still rapidly evolving, and those guys are too slow to ever catch up. Big record labels are like the big Hollywood studios, they're just interested on large blockbusters, and the small independents have to make do with no money, and they do, because they're not money driven in the first place. This documentary shows how messed up things are with new media: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/generation-like/ The song that was used in that video that went viral, showing couples kissing for the first time, sold 1 million copies on iTunes that week... there's loads of new roads for musicians (and artists in general) to explore, just forget about the past, it's not coming back.1 point

Glenn, not unexpected to be frustrated with a user interface after 1 day of use. I've been using Premiere for 10 years and it still has annoyances ;) But you get used to it believe me... Hi everyone, thought I'd share my own music with the eoshd community. I work with vintage analog gear and modular synthesizers to create soundscapes ranging from experimental ambient to modern electro. As a filmaker myself I tend to compose very visual and cinematic music, and I'd love to have it featured in any of your projects. http://oceancamp.bandcamp.com/album/enter-sunlight Thanks eoshd for the opportunity to share my music and for the constant flow of information about new gear. Now back to where i left...GH4, BMPCC, 5D...so many cameras so little time :)1 point -
