  1.  YouTube version Music by Poplin via the >EOSHD Music Challenge I've been trying some run & gun shooting with no rig, just a gorilla pod and GH4 all handheld. In the process I developed three image profiles for the GH4 which I've assigned to the mode dial on my camera. This is the first footage to show what the GH4 is capable of with the EOSHD Cinema profile. Read the full article here

  3. A lot of people are viewing the GH4 4K material on 2.5K or 1080p displays and there's crude downscaling going on which results in an over-sharp image and even some heavy aliasing. A lot of the YouTube stuff looks thin and sharp because of compression and bad downscaling.   First time I graded the GH4 files I was pretty happy and yet we've only realised half the camera's potential so far. Once we get the Atomos Shogun we will be getting uncompressed 10bit 4:2:2 4K out of the HDMI port. DXOMark tested the raw output GX7's sensor (similar to the one in the GH4) and it rates for about 11.8 stops dynamic range, pretty much identical to the 5D Mark III.   The GH2 and 5D2 have been around for ages and the GH4 is a far bigger step up from the GH2 than the 5D3 is from the Mk II.   Michael - ignorance of the reason other people choose to shoot with the GH4 does not make a good debate. Also remember that the filmmaking world is small and you are using your real name on the forum, if you piss someone off, eventually it will come back round. There's no career advantage to behaving like a complete prat in front of half the digital filmmaking community.

  4. Lazy retort. You can't expect to come on to this forum, which is largely populated with Panny-loving camera nerds, and say "I don't know shit but I think my shiny new 5D, which is the camera everybody said was great 2 years ago, is better than a GH4" and not expect to get pulled up on it. You evaded my point. You said you bought the 5D for low light. Why didn't you buy a D5300? Because loads of people buy the 5D! Great reason to waste $2000 ...

  5. I really dont see these images as cinematic. I think we're back in the "how to grade h264 to look like cinema" discussion again. This blog convinced me that shooting 2x anamorphic raw in 4:3 ratio with my 5d3 was "the shit" and i still believe it, Honest question: Why should I consider all this new buzz? Detail? i can see its there, but is only noticeable when you do a 300% crop, Dont get me wrong, i embrace 4k, but at the cost of going back to a lousy codec and poor bit depth... nope, ill pass.

  6. Have you heard of lens adapters? E mount is one of the most versatile available ... Oh no!!! 4K only with external recorder! How will we cope!!! Why would ANYONE buy a camera without 4K internal in this day and age! Wait a minute ....

EOSHS forum should be re-named GH4HS

The Nikon D5300 is superior to the 5D3 in low light and costs less than 1/3 of the Canon. It also has 60p, better dynamic range, a tilt screen, cinematic S35 sized sensor, smaller form factor, etc etc. Spending money on a 5DIII if you don't intend to shoot ML RAW is the result of either lazy research or brand-vanity - the 5D is the most famous video DSLR but it's far from the best.

  8. Why did this need its own topic? There are already plenty of GH4 threads you could've slipped this garbage in. To get a great image out of the 5D3 you need to shoot RAW, which has its issues (stability, storage, etc). Otherwise you get something inferior to the GH3 even (

  9. This post is a little bit pointless. It doesn't matter what camera you use, as long as it suits you, looks good and gets the job done. If you buy a camera for status then you are not a filmmaker. A camera does not operate you. You operate the camera. So when that comes to the GH4, it is very capable in the right hands.

  10. It's well documented that zooming while shooting with the 12-35mm X lens changes aperture and focus. Also the lens is not parafocal at all. If you want a parafocal lens, then the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 is the one to get. And I have the Canon 24-105 F4L and it isn't parafocal either. BTW that Lumix 14-45 kit lens is crap. I had it and sold it. I highly recommend the Sigma, or one of the Panasonic PZ lenses (Power Zoom) if you want to zoom in and out while recording video.

  11. When these things start to seriously affect their business, they will respond. They can happily keep making a ton of cash in the meantime. The Cxxx absolutely dominate rental, especially the C300. Above that it's the Alexa. The Cxxx series have no workarounds. None! They just work brilliantly. That takes a lot to make, as BMD, Panasonic and many others have shown. Truth is, whether we like to admit it or not, when they do come out with a 4K mirrorless it'll probably be the best one of the lot!

  14. Andrew - Just a query about your advice on audio levels (page 71-71) in the excellent and very useful book. You say that the "mic level limiter" is in fact an automatic audio gain control, and that with it switched on the mic level adjust does not work. On my GH4 it appears that the limiter is a normal limiter, reducing the level only when it starts to clip at high levels. Also, the mic level adjust works with the limiter switched in. So I'm finding that the traditional way of setting levels works well - turn the limiter off, set the level so that it never hits the red, then turn it back on, just to catch any unexpected peaks in audio. I can't find an option to use fully auto audio levels in my camera - which actually might be nice under some (but not many) circumstances. Or have I misunderstood something here?

  16. Agreed! It's not a Kubrik movie, it's a guy in bat suit who can even fly in it for goodness sakes! As for crossing the line, lots of editors actually do it on purpose to piss ppl like him off, just go watch Apocalypse Now again!

  17. Preferences -> General -> Default Scale to Frame Size. Tick this option and youre good to go. however there is one thing that you need to know: when this box is ticked and you take a 4k clip and drag it into a 1080p timeline, the clip will be zoomed out to fit the frame as you want BUT this is now referred to as 100% scale size. that is not a problem just something to work with. if you now want to zoom in native resolution of one of your clips you have to change the scale to 200%.

  19. Hi Andrew and folks, Be great if you could check out my music, did this a few years back but the genre to label it with still eludes me. My apologies in advance if self-recommendation is not allowed. Thanks for listening :) http://poplin.bandcamp.com/

  20. Hi guys, We just shot this video with the BMCC, Metabones Speedbooster, Nikon Lenses and Iscorama 54MC. RAW files were developped in After Effects CS6 (with Camera Raw) to Prores444 2400/1350. Color grading was done in AE. Please let us know what you think, we'd love to get some feedback. Cheers, Mihnea
