  1. That was originally what film LUTs were designed for. But who distributes on film nowadays? I think the ImpulZ LUTs are definitely meant to be part of a colour grading workflow, and not a substitute for grading. Some of them are very subtle. They're a lot of fun. I blog a bit about it here: http://marginaliafilm.wordpress.com/2014/06/13/using-impulz-luts-to-grade-hdslr-footage/ And here's my test on vimeo, only 720p I'm afraid: The generic Rec.709 LUTs work really well with the G6 footage. If GH4 users aren't keen on the Cinelike D profile they could shoot with a natural profile and try the Rec.709 LUTs rather than the GH4 specific ones. Right, time to watch Mexico v Cameroon

  2. I played with the 12MP JPEG in ACR- highlights are clipped and not recoverable- DR looks similar to 5D3 in that shot. Noise cleaned up OK using ACR tools, however image then looked over-processed (Neat Video would work better along with temporal NR). I shot a clip with the GH4 at ISO 1600 and lit it with a single LED (iPhone 5S). After Neat Video NR and bringing up the levels in post, it looks pretty good compared to the A7S examples so far. I would expect the A7S to do better in any case, however if Neat Video is needed in both cases and the final results look similar, the A7S's utility over the GH4 in low light would then be lessened. The FS700, especially with SpeedBooster is pretty good in low light, all the way up to ISO6400 (still needs NR in post at that level). So far most of the A7S demo shots have been with locked off (tripod) or very low camera motion. It would be helpful to see typical handheld (with and without a rig) shots. While it would be nice to have a 5D3 replacement at 50Mbps (vs. 5D3 RAW at ~64GB per 12min), I almost pre-ordered the A7S but am holding off until it's released and actual end-user videos are posted. Also curious about the A7S XLR audio attachment (release date and cost).

  4. It is from Jacob Neilsens test here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9mt8hkrfk6hepj0/GH4%20UHD-Ninja%20Blade%2010bit%20test%20footage.mov

  5. Right, for $6K one could get the 4K URSA with Super-35mm sensor, global shutter, pro-audio, and 12-stops DR: Looks pretty good! (video from 4K Production camera- would expect URSA to be the same or better).

  6. 10-bit 4K external recording will be possible with the Shogun (September) or quad SDI recorders (possible now with YAGH: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/857190-REG/AJA_KI_PRO_QUAD_Ki_Pro_Quad.html).

  7. Are you sure it's out of focus? Or just Canon 5d3 soft? After comparing gh4 to 5d3 footage... The 5d3 always looks "out of focus".

  8. The smaller the camera the easier it is to put an ND filter in the narrowest part of the optical path. X100, RX100, Ricoh GR have tiny lenses. FZ1000 doesn't.   Also don't forget the RX10 is $500 more than the FZ1000 for that built in ND filter, and you lose 4K, gain moire.   I think it's fantastic value for what you DO get! No need to be angry at a few minor omissions...

  9. Like others have said, I think you'll get more with a camcorder for that price. I don't understand why you need a dslr. I don't think what you'll get from a dslr for that price will suffice for a video camera.

  10. I think nobody mentioned it but this camera can also do 720p @240fps - and 640x480 @360fps. So this turns the camera even more interesting, 240fps in 720p is not bad at all.

  11. I'm astounded. How can you absolutely know for sure? I've been using cameras for 20 years, and reviewing them for the past few, and I'd *never* make assumptions like these until I actually have spent some time with either the camera, or a substantial number of sample files. Also, don't be surprised if the sensors are the same.

  12. This could have been near perfect except for two, maybe three, showstoppers. 1. Lousy 28mbps bit rate for 1080P 2. No in-built ND filter (tiny cameras like the Ricoh GR and RX100m3 can accommodate one). 3. Panasonic need to stop living in the 70's and do away with this NTSC/PAL mentality. Why are they still doing one lot of bodies with NTSC frame rates and a different lot with PAL rates. This is BS!

    GH4 DR on external 10 bit 4.2.2?

Just to clarify what I said above, the footage was shot at 4K on the GH4 but recorded to the Ninja as 1080p. I have no idea if you will get superior results recording 10-bit/422 4K to a Shogun and then downsampling in post. I don't see why you would really. Doesn't downsampling via the Ninja just simplify the workflow? Is it possible that the big wait for the Shogun will be a bit pointless if you're going to be downsampling to HD in post anyway?! Personally I'd rather have a Ninja Star in my pocket than a Shogun on top of my GH4 ...

    GH4 DR on external 10 bit 4.2.2?

Jacob Neilsen posted this 10 bit footage from GH4 + Ninja Blade via Dropbox (see EOSHD's GH4 Review comments thread, page 3): https://www.dropbox....est footage.mov I put it into FCPX and pushed it around a bit and was amazed (never worked with 10 bit before though!). I think it looks absolutely stunning - particularly the 2nd shot of the girl with the chair.

    Lenses

Hello! does anyone know anything about this lens i used yesterday, its a RODENSTOCK 80mm says made in germany moded with a crazy mode to fit EF, the mode consisted of paper..( was moded by an english chap) It resembles a tilt-shift lens, focuses in vertically very sharp in the middle, very blurred edges. shot some video with it..wasnt sure how to use it as it has a ball that tilts to various angles. '> photo with said lens taken yesterday

    What about story telling?

Nowadays, most people have nothing to say, but they'll say it anyway. I think, I know, I believe... Tarkovsky, Fellini, Godard, Bergman, were readers, first. So go to the library, borrow books -plays, classic novels, philosophy- and only then, you might have a chance, one day, to write something which will have a somewhat universal artistic value worth sharing with fellowmen who can really appreciate a deep, thorough, moving piece of story telling.
