  1. Quirky

    Sony A7S footage topic

I wonder how long, or how many camera generations still do we have to wait until most cameras sold for video have a global shutter or something else to eliminate the rolling shutter issue. One could think a thing like that would be a high priority, but apparently it isn't, or it is very hard to battle. Another thing I sometimes wonder is how hard could it be to come up with a S35-sized CCD sensor camera with a reasonable price tag. Like a D35, for example. That would be something, wouldn't it, although it might not have a reasonable price tag. Please remember to share your experiences with the other wannabe D16 shooters here when you get to that.

  2. Andrew would know better than me, but I doubt companies sponsor web people to switch to their cameras--too many legal/liability issues. They might give someone first access to a camera, or pick up the phone when they call, but that's about it. Why Panasonic, or anyone else, wouldn't sponsor Dave o. He'd have to sign a contract saying he would never disparage Panasonic in the future o. He'd have to deliver some sort of metric to keep getting payments o. He would have to show them copy first (so he doesn't give way secrets/confuse the marketing focus, etc). What makes Dave and Andrew so successful is you know they'd rather live on the street than follow any corporate party-line. Lately, DPreview is getting into hot water because they came out with an article saying why the d810 was so great, even though they were just tiny improvements. The article suggested that these tiny improvements constituted a reason to upgrade. Even Nikon lovers found that a bit irritating (the improvements might make me pick an 810 over a 5D3, but for me, at least, it woudln't get me to sell my 800). On the video side, they said it had a new profile, which Andrew pointed out was wrong. In any case, the idea that anyone would sell their 800 for an 810 to get a new picture profile is hilarious, to me.

  3. Well, what did you expect? After all, it's a full frame CMOS sensor camera. Of course it'll show some, especially if you wiggle it. Even APS-C and smaller size CMOS cameras have some rolling shutter issues. Some more, some less, but they all have some. I don't think expecting no rolling shutter from a FF CMOS (4K) sensor camera is entirely realistic, so far. Better to try finding ways to work around the problem. You might want to go for either a Digital Bolex (S16 CCD) or Blackmagic Production Camera (S35 CMOS with slap-on global shutter), then. I'd love to have either one, (or both:), too, but can't afford either one right now. Hopefully in the not too distant future I'll have one.

    4k frenzy and BMPCC

This is comparing apples with oranges. On paper, both may have a similar DR. Colors? With BMPCC, that's completely limited by your ability to grade, and beware, few people can grade. I thought I could, having used Apples Color for years, though admittedly only with usual DSLR footage where you essentially enhance something that's otherwise pre-defined. With ProRes (imo the wiser choice for the Pocket) and especially with raw you start with NOTHING. That's why you sooner or later become friends with LUTs. If you apply a LUT and on top of that perform a normal correction, it's practically as if you had dialed a DSLR preset like landscape or baby. A really good colorist will get the most out of the Pocket, good colors. A not-so-good colorist will do better by enhancing some pre-defined GH4 setting. Please, don't expect too much of flat picture styles with 8-bit. That's really neither fish nor fowl. The french review above says it: BM footage is easier to grade, but you must grade it. With the Shogun, you could perhaps get the best solution.

  5. The raw looking camera moves actually didn't bother me as much as the pretentious gimmicky concept, or the lack of one. They used all kinds of visual tricks that have been done many times before but with no story line or main concept to guide them, it's all kind of random, trying to be Michel Gondry but lacking his genius, since his visual gimmicks always serve and fit a story or concept. But hey, it's got millions of views, so I guess it did the job!

  7. +1 I had a Lightcraft Fader ND MK II which has gotten positive reviews. I still prefer standard ND's a lot more than that one.

  10. Two important things: Tick render at maximum bit depth and maximum render quality boxes on render either way, or you won't get the benefit. I'd work at 4K and just render at 1080 with above settings ticked, unles you really need to do a lot of reframing. It'll be 50% scale too, not 25%, 1080 is half the size of UHD in both directions
