  1. As these user names seemed familiar to me, and I felt I had seen useful and helpful post from these guys in the past I decided to see what kind of trouble the were causing. Of baltic's 8 posts I would consider 7 o them to be helpful normal discussions, this being the only exception. And of Nog's 13 posts I didn't find any that were looking to cause trouble, the were all offering opinions, help, or information. This was by far his most troublesome post. Baltic's fanboy comment was out of line and I don't agree with telling someone what kind of videos they should make, but is that single post ban worthy? As for Nog, unless you removed all of his troublesome posts so I was not able to find them he absolutely didn't deserve getting banned for that statement. Do you really feel that is trouble making? I am a huge fan of your site and the work that you do, I check in here almost daily since it is one of the best sources for information on anamorphics which is a large interest of mine. But I have to say that banning these individuals, especially Nog in this way is more damaging for the community than anything they did. Am I missing something here?

  2. Well, Ebrahim, Thank you for your general life advice, although it felt patronising in parts. but that's fine! A Community is exactly what Andrew has created. I have followed him and enjoyed his reviews since the beginning of his blog. I have also enjoyed some of his shorts and purchased two of his books. I will not denied that Andrew has done a great job. But what I will not accept, is for people to be banned for emitting their opinion on his short film. I don't think they were insulting at all, clumsy at best. I even sensed, taking into account Andrew extensive knowledge, that they were probably expecting something more meaty from him, and that I believe is their right. Some directors, that I hold in high regards, have produced some poor films. I glad they didn't ban me from watching the rest of their body of work. Andrew's action were extreme. We should all learn one pure truth. you cannot please everyone and that's that. Now let's accept it and move on, because the subject of acceptance is wild and wide, and unfortunately only too few really care or respect it. Sorry If offended anyone, but that did make me upset

  4. I shot this last week with a broken Olympus 50 1.8 I got for free! The rear element has a big crack (you can see the shape of it in the bokeh!) and I poked a hole in the front element with a screwdriver+hammer combo. Obviously not for every shot but definitely a cool look in the tool bag

  5. WOW... You removed removed Nog and Baltic. I guess Lincoln was right in that if you want to test a man's character, give him power. I can't talk about over threads, but in this Thread those 2 guys were giving their opinions and frankly I think they had a point. I'm not a fan of that video either, that does not make you a rubbish filmmaker. You just made a piece that some like and some other don't. Please feel free to also remove my account if you also think that I'm causing trouble. You will then just have lost all credibility to me. Regards...

  7. Canon cameras sell very well because they make people look great by creating very pleasing skintones. Apparently for technical reasons (silicon sensors, etc.), Canon makes skintones look great at the expense of color accuracy. ARRI is the undisputed* King of Color Science and reading about how to make a C300 somewhat match an Alexa may be helpful in setting up new cameras such as the GH4 and A7S to produce more pleasing skintones (at the expense of color accuracy): http://provideocoalition.com/aadams/story/color-matching-a-canon-c300-to-an-arri-alexa Art noted that digital cameras do the best in daylight (~5500K) due to sensor response to blue. While I too have noticed that Sony, for example, does much better in sunlight, I've found that cameras also do well in Tungsten (~3200K). While Tungsten doesn't have much blue, it is a continuous spectrum light, and that I believe is the most important issue. Cameras have the most trouble in mixed light (fluorescent + incandescent + LED, etc.) or light sources with large gaps in the spectrum (some fluorescent and many LED lights). I had no idea what kind of light this was, however AWB with the A7S wasn't too far off (minor WB adjust in post: still a bit magenta but that's the look I wanted): In the Art Adams article above, he had to make custom profiles (mostly the special Color Matrix) for each desired color temperature (two provided). This makes it clear that getting pleasing (and/or accurate) color for a wide variety of color temperatures and light sources is a very challenging technical problem. Face/skintone detection is one way manufacturers try to deal with the problem (regardless of race, all skintones have similar color properties (along the 'skintone' line on the vectorscope: ). It's not likely there's anything we can do to picture profiles on cameras to improve color performance vs. factory settings for general use. If we tweak colors for a particular WB and light source, it won't be correct for another light source with different spectral properties. Thus, if someone posts a tweaked color profile that changes WB colors or general color matrices, keep in mind those tweaks might not work correctly for your particular situation. * this is the internet, so the likelihood of disputing is much greater than zero. The Sony F35 and F65 can produce great color, and the new RED Dragon and associated color science is looking very good. The camera system most people prefer in terms of color is the ARRI Alexa (now +Amira).

    C100 video

Go on then. Take a trip to a wilderness like Alaska and shoot enough RAW footage to pull out images like that while also hiking up mountains and camping wild. And then put the edit together and grade it within a week of getting back. Images are about more than technical quality. You have to capture them first.

  10. I don't think an iMac is worth it. Can you replace the RAM? Apple will do it. (Assuming you buy now before the refresh. The 2014 model has its RAM soldered on.) Can you add more HDD space? Not internally without voiding the warranty. Can you add in a GPU? Nope. Can you upgrade to a higher resolution monitor when prices fall bellow 300? You can plug one in. To it's strength, Final Cut Pro is only $300. That is definitely a huge advantage for the Mac. But you don't need to own an iMac to reap that benefit.

    Nikon D5200 review

The 1080p looks so much better, but the 720p is usable I guess. I see 720p shots from the 5d Mark II and III that looks a lot better to my eyes.

    Nikon D5200 review

Nikon D5200 40Mbit/s hack 1280 x 720p Vs. 1920 x 1080p With and without sharpening. Slight color and contrast adjustment. Shoot with Flaat 11. Look in youtube cos here its only 720p. :/

  13. You sir are very welcome. I have been testing the gamma and color mode this weekend trying to really understand what is going on. Ever read the Sony manual? Horrible! Check out this post and scroll down to Picture Profiles. I'm working next on Color Mode. This camera is tricky to setup and has settings similar to the Sony pro cameras that I'm not very familiar with, so it's a whole new learning curve but it sure is fun!

  15. Hi, Does anyone have any experience with these? I'm in the market for something cheap but that still wont shake about when I pull focus. Also can anyone confirm whether the plate is compatible with a Manfrotto 577 / Giottos 621?

  16. Perhaps the playback issie could be fixed by using proxy files for the edit, then swapping to 'full fat' versions for the render. I've done this in AE a few times, not sure about PPRO.

Nice, lens flares and the camera shake feels a lot like a super8 home movie. About the A7s gamut issue in S-Log2/S-Gamut mode: Just wanted to post this color transform matrix here for anyone looking for just the gamut conversion. S-Gamut to sRGB: 1.87785 -0.79412 -0.08373 -0.17681 1.35098 -0.17417 -0.02621 -0.14844 1.17465 This was actually inside Nuke 8. This is just the gamut color matrix conversion. The color space, gamma and illuminant conversions are not represented.
