Canon 7D Mark II video specs vs the enthusiast DSLR competition (GH4, A7S, 5D3)

Compare Canon's 7d MII sample footage to Samsung's NX1 footage... I don't have a 4k screen, but even at 1080 there is quite a difference.3 points -

Photokina report day 1 - Sony FS7
Zach Ashcraft reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Day one at Photokina and first on the agenda is a catch-up chat with Sony product managers Bill Drummond, Ben Pilling and Robbie Fleming who had arrived fresh from IBC. I took a tour of the Sony booth and briefly tried the new Sony FS7 Super 35mm cinema camera for filmmakers! Read the full article here1 point -
I wanted to show how the Iscorama 36 delivers when fitted to a fast 50mm on full frame. boring imagery I'm afraid due to the size of the sensor the field of view obtained here is very close to that which you would expect from a 35mm focal length anamorphic on 4perf 35mm film. A 35mm anamorphic lens is considered wide, and anything beyond that is considered a 'special effects' type lens as far as i am aware. I feel the ability to obtain a wide angle from a anamorphic is a very desirable attribute. A fast wide is the holy grail. The magic is that despite the fact that we are getting a little fringing on leaves (characteristics of the 50mm lens when wide open), the results at f1.4 (t1.5) are astounding when you consider the width of frame and the control of dof possible on this combo. to me I think this is the benchmark the new bunch of single focus options should be compared against. -can they deliver this field of view/dof combination? nearly what you;d expect from a motion picture 35mm anamorphic from the likes of panavision. -can they deliver the above without adding CA or softening at f1.4? -can they do this on a full frame sensor? -can they do this without adding vignette? -can they provide this without the need for additional support? -ultimately, can the new options improve on the Iscorama when the above criterion are met? This is not a poke at the new units, but a personal opinion of my own which i feel needs to be considered. For example since the SLR magic anamorphot arrived not a single user has really put it through any challenging tasks and as such, we are now seeing many appearing on ebay due to what i imagine is disappointment from users expecting more from it. at the time of launch of the slr magic iscoramas went down in value slightly. of recent i have seen a lot coming up for sale - from people thinking about the new options around the corner? who knows? if we had seen the slr magic tested on a f1.4 prime on full frame we'd have probably seem more obvious oval bokeh, however, will it have been so soft the results are null and void? We need to see these things IMO.1 point

How is 8-bit 4k downscaled to 1080p when it comes to post, like lifting shadows and whatnot? Does h265 help in this regard over h264? Or will it still be at a disadvantage to something like true ProRes? This camera is damn tempting. Surely Metabones can come up with some sort of solution for the flange issue?1 point

Sony A7S Skin Tone Test
Gonzalo Ezcurra reacted to Amro Othman for a topic
Sony's greatest weakness with their cameras, especially the cheaper NEX line were the skin tones IMO. Even my a6000 still isn't quite there with its colour science. But it looks like the A7S is capable of pretty good ones! Great video by the way!1 point -
How is this new D-LUX a better choice than the LX100? Sleeker design? What sleeker design? They removed the grip and changed the labelling a little bit. I actually prefer the grip of the LX100, it's rather practical. Besides, you're not all of a sudden going to make the camera more compact by losing the grip, the lens is still the main thing sticking out. And you can put on a red dot that says 'Leica', well whoopty-effin-doo, congratulations. Maybe you should add a red dot to your nose too, because if that's the reason you get a certain camera, doesn't that kind of makes you a clown? Free lightroom..? Ok, so you pay more to get less, some sprinkles of Leica make-up and then you're praising them for including a software that you, if you're serious about photography, probably already have. I'm sorry, I do not follow this kind of reasoning. Then they can include Lightroom with the LX100, up the price by the costs, and sell it as a premium package with 'free' Lightroom as well. You're still paying for it (although perhaps at a reduced fee, because of the partnership). And I'm not sure about the firmware... but I think Panasonic will care quite a lot about firmware support and fixes and upgraded features, especially concerning video, I'm not sure if Leica would follow with the same upgrades right after... so you might be missing out here... But whatever makes you feel better. I mean, I always say: a certain camera wouldn't exist, if there wasn't a single soul found to buy it. If you feel like you can cheat your way into having a Leica by buying a relabelled LX100, then by all means be my guest. But if you want this for the sole reason it has 'Leica' written on it, I'm not really sure if that's the right reason to spend some extra dough on it. But again... you're in charge of your own wallet, whatever rocks your boat. I'm laying off the Leica and Hasselblad rebrands myself. It's like an Apple. People are willing to pay for the 'name', 'image' and 'philosophy' more so than specs and performance. In fact, it's much like a religion. But I'm open to any brand. If they have incredible performance for a justified price, I'm going with them and Panasonic is doing a damn good job at providing the best bang for buck lately.1 point

let me get this straight. this camera costs $900 and has a 11-34mm f1.7-2.8 lens on it and a m43 sensor. so why the f is the 12-35mm f2.8 so expensive?! The LX100 seems to have a better lens and yet its less expensive than the 12-35mm alone?!? i always called this lens completely overpriced, but now Panasonic is just making fun of themselves! rediculous.1 point

Leica LX100 main difference in design is the lack of nice grip.1 point

Everyone I know still shoots with canon and won't hear anything otherwise :/ that's part of where the frustration comes from I guess. The fact they have all this market share almost undeservedly so.1 point

Canon 7D Mark II video specs vs the enthusiast DSLR competition (GH4, A7S, 5D3)

Wow Im sold with thee Samsung. BTW, Canon is slowly becoming an irrelevant company1 point -
I don't wanna be that guy but since the 550D days even with YouTube compression the first samples always provided me the definite impression if something was a game changer or not and I was never wrong. Let me tell you that this camera from that video just sucks. I'm just talking about details. It still has that OLD and SURPASSED DSLR look.1 point

That is EXACTLY what I used in my build for the second video! Now having bought that ridiculous spinning disk contraption for my XL1 doesn't feel so stupid...1 point

I'm very happy I sold all my Canon equipment and lenses to switch to Panasonic in April. With G6 I can use old Canon FD lenses, with my Canon 70d I could'nt! And now, with GH4 I'm really more then happy! It's all thanks to Andrew, because I started to think to m4/3 after I saw some videos of Berlin! :) 7d MkII?? What we are talkin' about?! ;)1 point

Canon 7D Mark II
Tim Fraser reacted to Stab for a topic
I used to see it like this, but now I'm on the other side. I'm really happy that most people still buy the big-brand stuff and think it is the best. It's much better for me and my business when they do. People always ask me 'wow how did you get that sharp footage / nice slow-mo?' And my clients see the difference too. They don't care which camera I use, they just like how the footage looks. I have stopped sharing my techniques, lenses, etc. I have done it before and given the community back what I've learned but now I'm protecting my 'look'. If everyone knew how to shoot like I do, then what is my advantage? I say lets all promote the glorious Canon 7D Mk2!! All video enthusiasts should buy it! Great camera!1 point -
Haha! This should be your article about the 7D Mark II.1 point

Nothing angers me more than to see so much innovation go unnoticed by the masses who continue to buy unoriginal big-brand greyness for more money. Anyone paying $1800 for this camera and shooting video when they could be using a GH4 is simply nutty.1 point -
