    How to edit H265?

I'm trying to load some h265 files in Premiere Pro. Doesn't work. It doesn't give an error, just keeps saying 'Media Pending'. Tried google, but I only find stuff like: http://www.cinemartin.com/cinec/plin/ - plugins to export h265. The iPhone 6 shoots h265 and I suppose some people want to edit their footage on their computer. Is there a plugin/codec I can install to get it to work in Premiere? If not, what would be the best/easiest workflow? (Windows). Already installed some codecs on my computer to get smooth playback - this works fine now.

  2. There are plenty of discussions about a6000, but there are only few touching a5100. Is there a big difference between both in terms of video quality beside an XAVC-S 50mbit in a5100? I am kind of confused if a5100 has an identical video engine/readout as a6000. In the initial a5100 press release Sony had the following statement: "Additionally, with the power of the BIONZ X processor, the camera is able to read, process and output data from all of the sensor’s pixels during video recording, ensuring that it produces the highest quality video possible by eliminating aliasing, moiré and false color artifacts." Which was later revised and removed. Not sure if it was a copy/paste error from A7s or there was some improvement made in the readout(potentially pixel binning of the whole sensor without any line skipping). But since the wording was ambiguous and kind of implied the direct pixel readout they decided just to get rid of this statement altogether. I’ve seen some footages/test results/reports showing a significant improvement compared to older NEX’es and some showing very little. I suspect inconsistency could be attributed to different binning methods used for 24/25/30p and 50/60p modes. In the later mode engine might do line skipping to be able to keep up. Not sure how plausible is this theory. In addition, I found this test which I am taking with a grain of salt since I couldn’t verify who did it. It shows the noise level of a5100 to be significantly lower at ISO 6400 compared to both A5000 and 5R. If this improvement is real, it should indicate that a5100 does in fact have less line skipping. And while pixel binning wouldn’t completely get rid of moire and wouldn’t produce same image as direct pixel readout, I will take it anytime over line skipping. P.S. At this point I am basically deliberating if I should upgrade from my Nex 5R to either A5100 or Panasonic LX100, which would be better suited for non-professional work in moderate light conditions. In the case of LX100 I would probably film in 4K with intention to downsample it to get a razor sharp 1080p.

  3. Read my thoughts at DPReview in the Panasonic GH4 review (page 7), here As was the case with the GH3, the GH4's video capabilities were enough to achieve a gold award at DPReview. Read the full article here

They really need to sort out their test footage. sod the red camera. Just shoot some humans with a 550d if needs be! a human face in the foreground tells 1 million stories

  5. Panasonic G6 (with 14-45 kit lens, or the 14mm f2.5), Metabones Nikon to MFT Speedbooster, Nikkor 50mm f1.8 AI-S (or a 35mm f2) and an SLR Gorrillapod. You won't outgrow that setup quickly. The G6 is basically an improved version of the GH2 and cheap as chips. It is in my opinion the perfect camera for beginners to learn video on. Get the kit lens too for those times you need a wide lens. The Speedbooster is expensive but it will retain its value for years (unlike any camera you buy). The 50mm 1.8 is beautiful and cheap and perfect for video. The Gorillapod will function as a stabiliser, shoulder brace and tripod. If you do start getting into it, you can spend your money on good Nikon mount lenses that will be an investment.

  6. Anyone tried one yet? At $2300, with everything you need, XLR inputs, ND Filters, Zeiss Zoom, soon to be released 4K, variable codecs, could be a real winner? Could be the cheap 4K Camera to beat?? www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1072752-REG/sony_pxw_x70_professional_xdcam_compact.html

  7. What's the advantage of getting a NEX 5N to learn on? You want to become an expert in moire patterns!?   Just get the best you can afford. The difference in price between a GH1 and GH2 used isn't very significant. The difference in codec, workflow, grading, image quality and low light performance certainly is.

  8. I've been considering the merits of selling my C100 and 5d3 (and t2i) for a sony system. Am I crazy to consider this? The image and functionality seems to be weighing in favor of sony, at a cheaper price no less. I shoot both stills and video from weddings to documentaries and some smaller scale but consistent commercial work. I'd probably want some of the native sony lenses to have good AF at weddings - probably the 70-200 and the 55 prime. Manual focus nikkor for the rest. Thoughts? Am I crazy or is Canon really that uncool.

  10. that low contrast look can also be achived with the right lenses that have that look . one that is very very good for this is the Tokina RMC 28-85mm f4 its cheap on ebay - it has very very low contrast and very low saturation - they just made it like that for some reason ! it looks great and I use it to get this look via the glass - not using filters on my good lenses Now its a useful lens as it covers a good useable range 28 for the coverage , 85mm for the close ups and 50 0r 40mm for the rest ! you can shoot an awful lot on this one lens! stick it on a speedbooster so you have Super 35mm field of view with it. it also then becomes a very good f2.8 !!

ps : the trick with both these lenses is to shoot in the sweet spot of f2.8 - f4 range , so light your set for f2.8 or if outside use stacked Tiffen Nd's to get your f2.8 exposure it looks very filmic with enough depth of field actors can have faces in focus!! ......which is what we aim to do ! If you use these lenses at f8 - 16 with no Nd's you may as well use a kit lens - you will loose the look they have!! I use them both on Lens Turbo speedboosters - so they are f2 and superb at night outside at that stop. On set I still stop down to f2.8 when using the Lens Turbos (which are great - very sharp!)

  12. might have to render an intermediate file with something like ffmpeg, which supposedly supports using LUTs, although i haven't tried it.. and it's freeeeee! ffmpeg -r 24 -y -i my_sgamut_video.mov -vf lut3d="/path/to/my_downloaded_lut.3dl" -c:v prores_ks -profile:v 3 -pix_fmt yuv420p /path/to/render/drive/i_hope_it_works.mov

  14. You probably cant go that far wrong with an a6000. Fairly small, APSC sensor, viewfinder, decent video if you need it. compact zoom kit lens available. Other lenes to expand to. many with OSS (although nex lenses are fairly expensive). You can use adapters to use nikon lenses. EOS-M has very good quality stills and is cheaper and has great lenses which are also cheap, but it doens't have a viewfinder and video is meh. I think if you personally want a camera with a particular feature like 4k you should save up and buy one for yourself.
