  2. I would never put a camera into my pockets, that place is full of dust and you won't get it out a camera with fixed lens. You also don't want to stress the aligment between lens and sensor.

  3. Lol never post an ebay link on a forum if you plan on getting it. (unless this is your special way of promoting your own auction)

  4. Adding jacks and circuits adds space. Also there is of course the interest of panasonic to somewhat protect the gh4. I think before judging that too harshly, the gh4 is an incredibly affordable pro solution for video, and for the money what you get with lx100 and fz1000 is an incredible steal. Look at what canon, Nikon and Sony provides to consumers in terms of features and quality vs price on the video front.

  5. resolving power (optical resulution) and contrast are directly related yet can co-exist as a miss matched combination. for example a high resolution, but low contrast lens - one which is designed with a high level of correction to limit the effects of CA and other nasty attributes could be finished in less effective anti reflective coatings and thus be able to resolve detail but yield a lower contrast image. So.. in LP/mm terms the lens might resolve very clean steps between the black and white lines on a chart, BUT, due to the lower contrast caused by low efficiency AR coatings the black lines might be lifted (to a dark grey) and the whites will be darkened somewhat due to the light transmission losses caused by refections within the lens. The effect to the eye is a lower perceived sharpness - despite the fact that the detail is there. Contrast directly affects how sharp an image looks and therefore can be used to fill in the gaps and smooth an image. a low contrast lens with high resolving power is a very powerful tool - even if you need a sharp looking image since you can apply more sharpening and more of a boost in contrast in post before it starts to look nasty and over processed. If i were shooting buildings I'd be using Schneider Digitars which outresolve pretty much every dslr lens in existence. But for humans I'd rarely use anything made within the last 20-30 years because they make human beings look like cgi.

  8. Great write-up! I couldn't agree more! To me that's the essence of this camera. Great tip, thanks! Hadn't thought of that!

  9. My personal favourite is the Noritar 80mm f2 on full frame, wide open. Or notched down to f2.8 for that slight increase in sharpness on the eyes. second best is the helios 44. Both happen to be Double Gauss designs. My personal favourite lens I've used for humans.. An FF58 I wish I'd never let go:( :- the description actually talks about some of the points I bring up earlier:)

  10. Song 'Her' from the EP collection 'The Mud Here Has Memories' by Bunny Suit. Copyright owned by Universal Music Publishing. Filmed by Andrew Reid.  Featuring guest vocals from Aurora Aksnes. Poster frame shows close-up resolving power of the LX100 at 11mm F1.7 in 4K mode. The first retro-styled camera from Panasonic is the first ever compact to shoot 4K video from a large sensor. The first compact that I would call "exceptional" in almost every respect. 11. Hi guys, i saw this Iscorama on eBay but i am not sure on what is it and also if it can be used in a camera that supports c mount lenses like BMPCC. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Iscorama-Cinegon-1-8-10-1-5x-Objektiv-/121477103542?pt=DE_Foto_Camcorder_Objektive&hash=item1c48997fb6 Thanks in advance.

  12. In clear line of sight I am sure the WiFi link from LX100 to the ground would work reasonably well. I'd try that first.   Shame Panasonic seem to have shot themselves in the foot though because LX100 would otherwise be so great on a drone.

  13.   Cheers. Yeah it absolutely is a go-everywhere one. Think how many photos we take with our phones and some of them are just lovely... now think how much better these would be from the LX100 :)

  14. Just found how to set the framing of live-view to video without enabling 4K Photo Mode. The option to try is Rec Area. You can toggle between the framing for stills (2.2x crop) or video (2.4x crop).

  15. Oh and when P mode is active with shutter & aperture to their "A for auto" positions on the dial, Auto ISO works just fine whilst recording video, and you can use the exposure comp setting to gain up / down.

  16. Great writeup Andrew! I just got my LX100 and I'm having fun testing it. But I must say, it definitely does NOT have auto ISO with manual ss and manual aperture in video mode. You can set the ISO to auto, but I can confirm that as soon as you hit record it switches to a fixed ISO. Too bad.. On the other hand, you can change ISO during a shot. A big plus for stills shooters that I haven't seen mentioned is that flash sync goes all the way up to at least 1000th/sec. shutter speed, at least for the external flash I tried. The GX7 only goes up to a 250th I think. Of course an external flash looks ridiculously huge on this camera. The little supplied external flash is obviously an afterthought; it doesn't even tilt up. One workaround for the lack of touchscreen focusing is to have the "direct focus area" on; that way you can pretty easily move the focus area around with the dial during a shot, if on a tripod. Use function buttons to change ISO and WB. I've heard that in general the continuous focusing in video mode is better than with the GH4, but don't have a GH4 to compare. Andrew, have you noticed an improvement? Also, the focusing is supposed to be faster in 4K photo mode as opposed to regular 4K. My testing on that so far is inconclusive. But if it is indeed faster I don't see why you'd ever want to use regular 4K, since with the photo mode you also get to use the bigger, better-placed "stills" shutter button. On big concern I had was with focus hunting I saw on some sample videos. I'm going to be doing some thorough testing of that, since the camera not being able to calm down and stop hunting during a shot is a serious drawback for the run-and-gun and wedding work I do. With my initial testing it seems that the size of the focus area is important, with either too large or too small of an area causing more hunting. Looks like the pinpoint focusing mode hunts too much to be useful for video. Andrew, how much of an issue has focus hunting been for you? I will report back when I've been able to do more thorough testing.

  17. That thing is going to sell for atleast 2000€, forget about it. I also sent a message to the seller and there already have asked a lot of guys to buy it from him, so he looked what it was worth. He doesn't want to ship outside Germany, and he wants some money for it.

  18. Yeah, the FZ1000 has 5-Axis hybrid OIS (mind you, not in 4K or high speed recording), the LX100 just Power OIS (not sure how many axis that is specifcally). Yes, 4K recording starts countdown from 15mins. No, you cannot use it like this unfortunately. They have to provide some kind of clear separation. Yeah, I know that it's fixed lens solution against an interchangeable lens system, but as someone that invested in a GH4 I would be pretty pissed if a camera would come out with almost the exact same features but put in a smaller and much more affordable package. So I guess that's one side of the story: cutting down on features as to protect the value of higher-end products. Everybody is crippling their lower priced products, it's just how things work at companies. And then on the other side of course it would bump productions costs and bulk of the camera a bit (it will take money and space to implement). And remember, the LX100 and FZ1000 aren't really targeting filmmakers and video enthusiasts per se. There probably only is a relatively small percentage of users actually finding use for these kind of features, although I have to say, some kind of optional connector unit with mic-in and headphone-out would be welcome... but again, that would narrow the gap between lines. I think it's the same reason why they won't give the LX100 a touchscreen. And who knows perhaps they could've given the GM5 4K video as well, but why would someone then still buy a LX100 or GH4? Pretty sure you'll love it! Enjoy! Actually, it hasn't. Because it has no dedicated videomode you can set auto-ISO, but as soon as you start rolling video this sticks with the initial ISO (unless that's what you meant, yeah it does pick that all by itself). Also, the feature completely disappears in 4K Photo mode. It doesn't do anything. Yes, it does indeed! It also features the same accessory ring you'll find on the LX7. Personally I would never put a RX100M3 in my jeans pocket. Maybe it would fit, but it would be uncomfortable and awkward looking. A thin 5.0" smartphone and a filled wallet is what I would carry around maximum... a camera? Don't see it happening. Not even with the LX7, although maybe if you're wearing baggy cargo pants.

  19. Andrew a FZ1000 review. FZ1000 is a baby GH4 for video features. LX100 is ok faster lens ecc but lack a mic in, separate video mode, CINE profiles I wait a FZ1000 review and after i use my 900$ for one of this two cameras. I have only 900$ and i would make the perfect choice without any regret

  20. So I'm on assignment here in California with my trusty A7S, shooting an arty surf-culture documentary. I don't want rolling shutter so I'm shooting APSC, but I want full frame so I've stuck a speed booster ultra on it. The reason I want full frame is because I'm after crazy-shallow DOF, so I've stuck a 50mm f1.2 on the speed booster and opened it right up. Now I chose the A7S for this job because of its wide dynamic range (the skies here in CA are bright but the skin and the waves are dark!) so I need to shoot in S-LOG at 3200 ISO. My question is this: does anyone know somewhere near Venice Beach I can source industrial quantities of welding glass?

  25. I have both, actually all 3. It is hard to tell someone what to buy. The quality of the image and video from the LX100 is very good to excellent. Is it as good as the GH4? I would say if you are a pro and looking for the equal of the GH4 then the answer is no. But if you are an enthusiast and can cut the camera some slack, you would be hard pressed to tell the difference. Remember, I have only had the LX100 here for about 5 hours now, so as time goes on my opinion may change. The disappointing thing about the LX100 is it is certainly not a baby GH4. The camera is 80 percent a point and shoot camera that dips into the higher end here and there. The menus try and emulate the GH4, but they are clumsy, and not just a little bit clumsy - low end pint and shoot type camera clumsy. I am quite surprised. The camera would be a deal breaker for me if it were not for the really good quality video. I expect the images to be excellent too, it leans in that direction but I won't know until I can shoot RAW. Here is a simple example. Say you are not totally or only a video guy. Video is really high on your list, but you want to take meaningful pictures too. I am a photographer, so when I take pictures - even just home pictures - if they are not "excellent" you know darn well the comment "and you are supposed to be a photographer" is going to hit you head on. To achieve those excellent pictures consistently, you really have to have control of the camera. So, take the LX100 in hand, go to take a shot and you will notice you have no control over the focus point. You can press 3 buttons and get control, or set the menu so you can have direct access to the 4 way controller just like the big boy cameras :) As you shoot along you want to do a custom white balance (something a lot of folks won't ever do) and you find you no longer can do a custom white balance unless you go into the menu and undo your setting to have direct access to the 4 way controller dial. You can change the white balance, but you can't do a custom white balance. Now go to video. Is the quality as good as my GH4? not quite. But at 4K reduced to 1080, it is head and shoulders better than any direct 1080p camera I have used. Again, no custom white balance unless you go and reset the main menu back to the way it was. So now you give up using the 4 way controller easily and just go thru the hoops. Bottom line, coming down fro the GH4 the feeling is yuck. Coming up from a Canon G1X II or a Sony RX100-3, the camera is terrific. I won't be grabbing the LX100 for any pro level work, images or video. But I think most people will like the LX100. Its calling card is the 4k video quality - especially when going down to 1080 - and the bigger sensor for all other imaging. The focus is quite good and the camera surpasses almost all other point and shoot sized camera I have used. My problem is at $900 i would really really wanted more of a nod to having some usable features in it. For stills I cannot select a "lowest shutter speed" like I can on the EM1, but the GH4 doesn't have that either. The GH4 with a 12-35 is a dream. It just works - period. if you do put the size differences in the mix, then get the 12-35 lens. If you want a 12-35 lens (almost, but not quite) and a free camera thrown in, then get the LX100. Peter

  27. I find that for 99% of situations S-Log on the a7s is pointless. Particularly since most of us shooting with the a7s don't have the capabilities to post process a log profile effectively. The creative styles are very powerful tools - particularly with the a7s since the dr is a lot greater than the same creative styles on most of the other sony/nex cameras. you can actually pull down the highlights or pull up the shadows quite effectively if required, and get some of the apparently lost data back. My personal favourite is the 'Neutral' creative style. but with the sharpness and contrast dialed down to -3. saturation left untouched. granted there are some peaked reds, but since I was shooting at 16000iso for the majority, letting the camera do auto exposure (due to the fast paced workflow required), where 95% of the light was coming from neons and other nasty lights. Very little grading was applied to the footage.

  28. Roger Deakins is a great DP. Can't argue that. That being said I could care less what his opinion is (or anyone else) of any given film. A lot of DP's have terrible taste in film. BITWC is a great film. Not that anyone gives a shit what I think :P

  29. I don't really care about Roger Deakins. He's got an entire crew to cary around his gear, light, and get him coffee and craft service. In my case it's just me, walking around, trying to capture the best images I can. The lightweight of the Sony bodies and the silent shutter option in the A7s is very intruiging. I'm going to rent one in the next weekend to see if I can live with it as my main camera.

  30. I love this comment, by which i mean its just plain idiotic. Everything you've seen from the FS7 has been shot within the first 5 minutes someone has had the camera. Let's wait a few months before making such a wide declaration. Early A7s footage/GH4 footage also looked pretty crappy. Give people a few shoots with a camera - then make your judgements. Now to your "video" point. It has zero to do with frame interpolation. Its called over-sharpness. What really annoys me is people who shoot a digital sensor camera that isn't a RED, want a "cinematic" output, and yet use no softening filters (RED deliberately keeps their image as soft as they can get away with). None. An Alexa can look over-sharp shot poorly. 35mm film can too. When we shoot film (too rare!) we often have 3 layers of softening in front of the lens. 3 layers! When shooting a commercial or drama we have a range of Tiffen softeners ready to go for the Alexa or the F55, and we often will soften the highlights again in the grade. However - if you're shooting for broadcast, and you're matching $150k studio cameras which are horrifically sharp, being able to look 'video' is actually a plus! Sony and Canon and Panasonic understand this. You want a more pure 'filmic' camera that's value for money? I can't recommend the BMs enough. You need a camera that can shoot reportage, TV interview, a feature doc, a music video AND an indie feature? Better to start off hella sharp and adjust to taste. I tell people all the time: A Swiss Army knife is actually a pretty terrible hunting knife. Unless you NEED that flexibility.

    Grading

stop the presses, before you grade read these two funny articles, theres a distinction to color correction and color grading. Color correction is all those subtle little corrections in your movie, correcting the exposure etc, grading is changing the complete look and feel of your film all mentioned in the excellent book by mr Hurken "Color Correction Handbook - Professional techniques for video and cinema" I love these articles because they point out a simple thing, today its movies that are not "graded" that stand out from the crowd. http://theabyssgazes.blogspot.gr/2010/03/teal-and-orange-hollywood-please-stop.html http://www.cracked.com/article_18664_5-annoying-trends-that-make-every-movie-look-same.html its nice to have a distintictive look, and currently i think its movies that dont look "graded"....
