  1. Please respect the topic: 1) do not discuss about FM price, FM shipment, FM discount list, FM warranty or any economical stuff related to FM. 2) play nice to everyone, don't fight over stupid things, help anyone in need of advice on taking lens or anamorphic related to FM. 3)Share your experiences and videos with the FM, advice on hardware stuff related to FM. Everyone is welcome , professional and non professional. I would love moderators to keep an eye on the discussions and feel free to delete what is not related to FM. Be constructive and don't be afraid to share your doubt. Thanks everyone!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!

  4. No wonder Canons sell so well if their users think the 70D is full frame :)

  5. The Sony A7 II is the first full frame mirrorless camera with 5 axis stabilisation inside (sensor shift based). It also gets some ergonomic and video upgrades such as XAVC-S at 50Mbit/s, S-LOG and 120fps. But how does image quality compare to the Sony A7S and how effective exactly is the much anticipated "SteadyShot Inside" for video? Read the full article here

  6. If Canon announced that they were withdrawing from the enthusiast stills camera market, you'd be surprised. It's a pretty big market. But withdraw from the enthusiast video market they almost certainly have at the moment, whether they meant to do or not. Read the full article here

  7. Yep I also find hard to believe that the red dragon has 18-20 stops of DR. Maybe it has something to do with the HDRx mode on the dragon, I don't know.

  9. Reality is - even 16:9 is an extraction from 4-perf 35mm! This sort of practice is far from new. I did really like the look of Gone Girl, I think Cronenweth is a great DP.

  10. I'm very excited about this lens. Only recently have I been seeing optical characteristics from my iscorama that I feel could be better. The cinelux does this - it;s drastically sharper than the isco 36 from edge to edge on full frame it would appear. ````so focusing it with this unit should deliver maybe one of the sharpest anamorphic systems available. - assuming they didnt get the two front elements drastically wrong! One of the primary concerns i see is the rotating front element. @hans-Punk mentioned earlier in a previous topic that he is intending on fitting a uv filter straight away - since any coating damage or build up of grease can show up during focus pulls where flaring might be present. - the flares change during focusing creating a rather distracting look. Not a horrific problem but would have been really nice if that front element didnt rotate. I also agree (based on my experience using the iscorama 36 (with a rotating front optic) that it might be wise to use a UV filter, regularly changing them as they get dirty, to limit the amount of contact the front optic has with pollen, stray fingers or other contaminations that can make contact with that big front optic face. I was really pleased to see they included a focus scale on the unit - something the original prototype we've seen previously didnt show. I am personally trying to locate a suitable short anamorphic that can sit intio the unit and allow the taking lens to also sit into the fm module barrel. this will be a great way to shorten the total length.

  15. W...what's wrong with criticizing a manufacturer's shortcomings? Even if it's not the end of Canon, even if the 1DC is a great camera (for the price of a car). I... don't assume many would still pick a 5D Mark3 over a GH4 when the former looks "out of focus" in all image quality comparisons. The 5Ds became a standard in enthusiast videography because they were good at the time for a fairly affordable price. Now Canon is more or less dead (in terms of exciting new things) in that same segment (No...not talking about the 12.000$ segment). Why would you not state that from the top of your lungs? By now I doubt Canon listen to criticism, but some companies sometimes do. Sometimes a (mass) critical train of thought can sway a company towards improvement. Why would you bring strawman arguments to defend the company? Yes, bash the living shit out of them, bash the living shit out of everyone if there's ever a reason, because that's the only way you might see improvement. Ever. Canon's shortcomings in the lower price segment are factual. And I really don't think Canon make their money out of 1DCs. And the average enthusiast can have a fairly strong influence in what the "masses" adopt with somewhat of a delay if their go-to company isn't really doing anything. Do you think the mass consumer doesn't hear 4K at least three times a week? Of course he does. And of course it's working. It's just working slowly. A parallel was (jokingly?) drawn in this thread between Canon and Nokia. Good parallel. I don't think Canon are gonna become irrelevant anytime soon, but they are stagnating ferociously and I really can't see why anyone would chose to say "Yea, but..." in the face of that. Why be content? Nobody's ever gained anything from being content.

  17. there is not much differance in image quality between the T3I and the 70D both are apsc sensor so its not a ugrade getting the 70d I would get a Panasonic g6 or gx7 huge improvement in image quaility and peaking and a superb evf or just keep your T3I and get some more lenses with the money you have allocated

  18. I do wish the GX7 had higher bitrates but having said that, I've never really had any problems grading. The codec is very maleable. The GH3 on the other hand, not only does not have focus peaking but its LCD and viewfinder are both so low resolution that I found it difficult to achieve focus even with a magnifier. Also the GH3 has noticeably more noise, starting at ISO 800.

  19. I don't know what the point of this brand war is on this topic. If you want to spend money on a 1DC, go ahead. If you want to spend money on an A7S, go ahead. Buy whatever you want. Like whatever image you want. But don't bash each other in a war... it's just boring. I have my own preference for gear, and I'll give constructive advice to anyone. I might buy an A7S, because it has features I would benefit from creatively. "But what about the 1DC, it's great in low light!!??" Personally I don't have the cash for a 1DC, and besides, I couldn't justify the purchase if I did. The A7S would be fine, and I'd have much more money left for LENSES. My point being... instead of arguing, shouldn't those doing it speak more constructively about their choices and show examples of their work where the features of the "brand" has influenced the piece?

  20. This is the crux of what you are saying I think. This thread has unnecessarily sunk into brand war. I agree that if Andrew made his arguments a bit more measured and diplomatic they would be more likely to have some real-world impact. EOSHD is an influential blog. The core of this article is on the money. Canon are not in synch with the other stills/hybrid manufacturers with regard to video. But it's complicated. Companies are still finding their feet with digital cinema. Canon are having success with their cinema line. Look at how many pro videographers and broadcasters use Canon. Look at how many Oscar nominated films used Canon cameras. This has to be massive for their brand (across all their products). Why would they jeopardise that? Can you imagine Arrri or Red releasing a sub-$5000 camera that competed with Sony, Panasonic, etc? It would be extremely complicated for their branding. It would have to be better than the other offerings in the bracket, but not undercut their pro cameras. I know Canon aren't at the top of the table, but they are playing in the same league. Will Panasonic continue to give us so much with their GH line when their Super-35 pro cameras arrive? Who knows. It will be complicated for them too. Sony are the only company at the moment with decent specced cameras at every level, and look at how confusing their market strategy is (particularly with the FS7). Digital cinema is still young and the dust has far from settled. But the fact remains that Canon's DSLR video sucks, and it will through the 5DMk4 at least.

    FM lens discount

2 C shaped felt lined shims (or split ring) to go round the anamorphic, would be better to clamp the anamorphic and then the screws could screw into them, rather than scratching the gold ana' but it would also benefit from some sort of bayonet to attach the rest to.

  25. Assuming that the production model of the FM lens operates in the same way as the early installation video, the FM lens needs to grip to the anamorphic lens inside, then the exposed rear area of that lens is clamped by a support ring...which is then attached to rails. I'm sure Anamorphicshop has a nice solution yet to come - that can reduce the internal diameter clamp via a collar or something to allow the use of smaller anamorphics (sub 71mm), but in the mean time - here is a 'Ghetto' solution. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321033449391?_trksid=p2059210.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT Yep, exhaust pipe is the right diameter to match the exterior diameter of the ES cinelux that the FM lens looks optimised for. The stainless steel tube also has a nice and thin wall thickness to allow maximum space to accommodate any smaller anamorphic, providing it is packed in there with soft padding. This could be a decent temporary solution to those wanting to try alternative lenses for testing, until they release a proper internal reduction collar or whatever they have planned.

  26. You must have very low confidence in your own ability to come out with this stuff. My clients don't come to me because of my secret tools. They come to me because I put much emphasis into the ideas and for my very stylised, visual style. They come to me for MY vision and how I apply that vision. My tool selection is just an ingredient of that vision. People who work with me share information, talk to each other, borrow stuff, debate, exchange skills, ask for advice - because we are collaborators who have strengths and weaknesses, and we help each other to make better stuff. This is simple, basic networking - you never know who you will need in future! I have no issues writing a blog post telling the whole wide world of amateurs and professionals about my entire music video production structure - from style to logistics. I'll be happy sharing because they will never have the same vision as me, and most importantly they may have something to share too which I can learn from and apply. The secret sauce is your very self. Your ideas, your style, your personality, your skill, your results - it is this that clients buy. Have confidence in this and what everyone else is doing doesn't matter. If nobody shared, nobody cared ;)

  27.   Maybe not on EosHD but they do on EOSHD.     Who are "They"? It's such a gross simplification you're trying to pass off as a relevant argument. The audience at EOSHD is mostly advanced amateur and pro. Enthusiasts with high knowledge and those looking to increase that knowledge. The advanced amateur filmmakers I know from my 4 years of running EOSHD just don't do what you're describing. They read reviews first and research the options. They choose the right tool for the job and one that matches their existing lenses. And nobody with high knowledge spending $3000 on a camera simply walks into a shop and blindly buys what the sales assistant recommends. You're talking about a specific type of customer with LOW knowledge who doesn't have a clue and doesn't really know the options inside out like we do... they don't know that Samsung currently have a better APS-C sensor and that Sony currently have better image quality. A Canon 60D is enough for them and it's cheaper, and it feels familiar ergonomically in the 10 seconds they have to try the cameras in the shop, so they buy it. This is the person you're describing and it's completely irrelevant to the topic you're applying it to.   Actually many of the general consumers are buying Sony at the moment especially the younger demographics, as they have always used LCDs to compose an image, and the optical viewfinder seems unnatural to them.     Big film studios have used a Panasonic. There have been major box office hits shot on the GH2. As for colour science, Panasonic VariCam - I say no more. The big accessory companies in the US like Zacuto and the smaller more specialist ones like Hot Rod Cameras are big Panasonic supporters and these guys are as much a part of the big film studio food chain as top directors and DPs. Their stuff is used all the time in major film and TV productions. If pros never used Panasonic Micro Four Thirds, Hot Rod wouldn't be doing PL adapters for them.     So what? I'm not talking about that market! I'm talking about the high knowledge enthusiast crowd which is where Canon are failing right now.   And this crowd contains a lot of "influencers". The herd follow the shepherd eventually.   For the record iMacs are not overpriced. 5K screen for a start. Samsung TVs are not overpriced. They have a full range of models right down to bargain prices and the price / performance ratio is excellent on almost all of them.     Well that's a great attitude.   Says it all really

  28. From the POV of an old fart: Can someone explain brand loyalty to me if so inclined? For some odd reason I seem to see people investing themselves in a brand rather than technique. In my experience, I know this is kind of a legacy attitude among mid-level "pros" I've worked with. (Corporate media types) When you find something that solves a problem for you you tend to build a little trust with the brand...but these days gear development just moves so quickly and is acquired so cheaply that seems like an outdated notion. If Canon doesn't offer what you want, why fret about it? Move onto different gear. There's always going to be something serving the niche' market in which we're all active. If you invested in some camera body and you want to believe you made the right choice --and so you extoll the virtues every chance you get, what are you trying to accomplish exactly? Some sort of piece of mind for yourself? Affirmation of your superior shopping capabilities? A list of impressive features don't mean a thing if you have no clue or directed ambition on how to use them. I mean, I'd willingly hire someone with wonderful skill, enthusiasm, and an old 5DII than a self-righteous goof-ball and an FS700 shooting 4K. --I've made that mistake this past year. A 22 year old out shot a mid-40's dude and all his toys by a creative factor that would make your head spin. And, personally, I'd rather be the kid trying new stuff and busting butt to be creative rather than some jerk reading DxO Mark charts half the damn day. Here's a tangent: you know what matters more when making an awesome film or video? Superior Production Design. Sets, Wardrobe, Cast, Location. Do that on an impressive level and the work will almost always be better. Yeah, but that's not tech-centric, involves hard demanding logistic work, interpersonal skills to deal with people, and is boring as hell, right? This spec-centric stuff is really annoying me...but then, I'm old and cranky about everything anyway. Maybe I should question less why people want to brag about their cameras and ask why I'm on a website that caters to them? Dang, I'm really off the rails here!! Oh well.

  29. no 2 people have the same artistic vision - so I have no problem sharing on this forum which I do regularly - I'm sure if you gave 10 people the same camera and lens set up you would get 10 totally different results.... everytime. its not the gear its the person behind the gear that makes the differance.

  30. You can't buy experience you have to earn it...I've been doing this for 25 years now and seen all sorts of cameras and styles come and go . All the stuff I learnt shooting Super 16 in the early days and 4 perf 35mm carries forward to all these digital cameras. Lighting and lenses are the two most important factors - very often over looked by people on here . Learn to light thats the key to it all.

  31. Too long, didn't read.. I did however read the post you wrote and are referring too. I am not intimidated by amateurs having the same gear as me, nor am I worried about sharing my knowledge with people who want to learn. Sharing is caring.

  32. Yeah I considered adding the GH4 to my list. I think with a Speed Booster - perhaps the BMCC version for more light and S35 crop - and a Ninja Star to get 10-bit colour (4K down sampled to HD) it would be enough for me. I also wish there were more tests online of the GH4 (down sampled 4K) with in-camera noise reduction turned on. I hate using Neat Video as part of my post workflow, and the GH4 image is more than sharp enough for me already. I wish I had the money and time to justify buying a 5D3 just to shoot RAW for my own personal use, but the GH4 is so much more practical and useable. In fact, the C100 MkII is so expensive for what it is, and for personal stuff it's bigger than I prefer, so the GH4 is a good compromise between the two. In good light, GH4 footage can be made to look remarkably close to the C100 (see 1st video below). It's just the colours that aren't as stunning as from the C100 (I'm a certified colour junkie). I think with a Ninja the GH4 colours can look great though (see 2nd video below) ... Vs. C100: 10-bit (Ninja) vs. h264: For me the difference in colour between the C100 and GH4 (in the 1st video) is very significant. The GH4 looks flat, muddy and dead in colour terms compared to the C100. But looking at the colours in the 10-bit vs 8-bit GH4 video, it looks like a Ninja could fix that ...

  33. Canon are just good enough for the 'masses' - we are specialist camera nerds on this forum and have found all the better alternatives to Canon and how to squeeze every last drop out of them quality wise. People still walk into camera stores and online retailers and just buy a Canon because it has the brand reputation and changing ' the masses' to even think Panasonic or Sony let alone Samsung will still take time. We are all believers - the masses have to still follow us! There are still alot of Canon users on here who will not touch a mirrorless camera with an evf.

  36. There is a editor currently on the market that processes H.265. It isn't a great editor like Premiere Pro, but it is adequate, none the less. Cyberlink's Power Director 13 has HEVC 265 natively, and multiple choices for uploading to media sites, as well as file formats and discs. Worth a try while waiting for upgrades to other editors currently on the market!

  37. My NX1 arrived today. 2 things right off the bat. After installing the information catching i-launcher I installed Samsung's Movie Converter (on the mac). I went to load a few 4k shots I took and I got a "unsupported file" error. Un-installed, re-installed, rebooted, same thing. I pulled up the Parallels desktop with Windows 8. Installed, and it works fine. I'm in the middle of conversions now, but, I was able to look at the first file converted and I'm impressed. I did the same shot with the AX100 a few weeks ago so I'm comparing but, my initial reaction to the 4k quality was...."Well done Samsung" Now to dig deep.
