  1. That you like it Christina is a good sign Just unboxed it and already I can tell there's a ton more colour and data in the 4K MJPEG files than in the A7S Shogun files. Canon LOG is phenomenal, the amount of stuff that is in the shadows and highlights when you grade it or pull it around. It's like having raw again on the 5D! But 4K and bullet proof reliable!

  2. The 1D C was £12,000 in the UK inc VAT when it came out. You expect me to have the same opinion now it is £5k and sitting on my desk, isn't that just a BIT silly!?

  3. After playing around for a VND solution for the taking lens on the FM I've found a good solution. I've used a Cokin double-threaded 72mm VND. (The front filter thread is 77mm). I screwed a collapsible rubber lens hood to the 77mm front and folded back to form a rubber ring grip that controls the VND spin. The cool thing is that the lens hood is also double threaded, so the internal thread ring of the hood provides a barrier when positioning to the cinelux rear or FM aluminium mounting tube (although 77-67mm step down ring would be safer to protect from FM tube rear) . This means that there is less risk of the ND glass or anamorphic rear touching - yet it provides a very nice close alignment, without having to hard mount together. I've used: 72mm Cokin PURE Harmonie Variable NDX filter Kood 77mm 77 Universal Rubber Lens Hood (nice knurled grip on outside) 49-72mm step ring (or whatever starting diameter for your taking lens) If an additional 77-72mm step ring is inserted into the lens hood front - it is also possible to make a semi-hard linkage to the 72mm FM cinelux thread adapter ring. The VND can spin a few 360 degree rotations until the thread would eventually tighten and come to an stop. This is a good solution if you want 100% light/ dustproof connection as well as know that the taking lens is perfectly aligned.

  5. So I recently configured my Ronin and quickly realized that I needed another monitor. I relegated my DP6 as my AC's Monitor and went to hunt something that was small, lightweight, etc to mount on the crossbar of the Ronin. Weight being key, I looked for a 4.3 inch monitor. Lot of Movi Ops love the Small HD 4.3 which is nice but non-SDI and low rez. I was hoping when my new small monitor wasn't working on the Ronin, I could pop it on my A7s or some other camera just to have a small on board. One of the problems I've been having with the latest slew of HD on board monitors from Small HD or Marshall is that they ditched the 5.6 size and have gone bigger to 7" and 7.7". I prefer my on boards to be small and sharp. Zacuto's EVF having used it a number of times was a big fail for me. Crap colors, not sharp, etc. Cineroid and Alphatrons I find have poor build quality as well as resolution equal to my iPhone 4s. What I was hoping for was a 4.3 monitor with optional EVF attachment. Big enough as an onboard, small enough to work as an EVF. But it needed to be high rez (at least 720p), have HDMI loop through (because I use Paralinx, and SDI. I pondered TV logics 5.6 at 1080p. It's an amazing monitor but too big for my needs and costly. Then I came across some press releases about F&V's 4.3 Spectra (720p). It clicked all the right boxes but was somewhat pricey (1299.00 with EVF attachment). The ads also make it look cheap (C'mon F&V hire a decent photographer already). Their NAB promo clip was dull as dishwater. As it was so new, no one I knew owned one or rented them. So I took the plunge on spec faith alone (something against my nature). I bought it from a place with a great return policy (Adorama). After unboxing it from a very fancy magnetic lid felt lined box, I beheld an incredibly well built monitor. Built like a tank. Better built than Small HD if you can believe that. Without the EVF piece, it still has a small metal hood built into the housing which really helps with incidental sun but without having to look down a snoot. The EVF attachment is very solid with no distortion (unlike small HD's). But what blew me away was the IQ. Miles better than my DP 6. Sharp as hell and at 400 nits it's pretty bright. Accurate colors and great in low light. It cross converts from HDMI to SDI as well as loops through both SDI and HDMI. Very handy for more complicated sets. It comes with an array of cables for power (D tap, 5V, etc) and has a built in Sony NP adaptor. One NP 750 battery will get you to lunch. 170 degree view angle. 5 assignables. Fisher Price easy menu. False Color, Histo, Peaking, and all the other features you'd expect in a pro monitor. I estimate it'll be worth the extra cash as I'll be using it on just about every job. The only downside is lack of a waveform which may be a deal breaker for some. It has a histo, false color and zebras which is fine for me for exposure. There's talk of a firmware upgrade with waveform. For sharpness and detail especially viewed in EVF mode you'll find this hard to beat. As of now, they're the only HD spec 4.3 inch monitor on the market. Anyway, I'm not much of a review type person but when I find a piece of gear that truly fills a needed niche (pro build HD monitor that's small), I feel compelled to let people know. This being a site that promotes small lightweight one man gear, I think this monitor fits right in. Now my dream gear would be a 4.3 inch onboard 4k recorder or a 4k Ninja Blade to route to (Atomos are your listening?). http://www.fvlighting.com/spectrahd-4.html

  7. Stock Cine-D can work in some situations (his point is don't use Cine-D with lots of tweaks). I'm currently shooting for in-camera so there's less work (and surprises) in post. I do this by testing profiles and settings with the camera hooked up to a full-sized HDTV (46" and larger).

  8. Found this analysis of Cine-D on the GH4 which I think explains the problem very well. http://blog.josephmoore.name/2014/11/05/why-cine-d-sucks/

  9. I'm pleased with the results from Rocky Mountains Movie Converter on my PC. It's free and whilst not offering any image adjustment, it does give the Samsung's H265 files quite a pleasing reduction in contrast when converted to Prores. http://www.mydiyworld.net/?p=1805

  11. Yeah it's weird the amount you change your mind at the drop of a hat or suddenly irrelevant things become relevant or vice versa. But, it's refreshing to see you embrace things with an open mind. Also, the general all-round positivity. Keep up the good work. Wishing you a stellar 2015!

  13. Like I've already said (did you read the blog /P/?) it will be my stills DSLR as well, and a top end one it is. X-T1 can't do AF properly. D750 has a Nikon mount, can't use all my lenses on it. A7S can't do AF properly either! 1D X / C can do everything in terms of stills and allows me to sell the 5D 3 and quite a bit of other kit to fund the purchase. The 4K image from the 1D C is amazing. I love the NX1, amazing for the price but the 1D C holds onto a more filmic fine grain and has Canon LOG so you get more D/R plus it has the all important low light whilst NX1 does not. The A7S with Shogun is also great but sometimes I need to go without the external monitor or into tricky weather situations where the A7S & Shogun would simply die. Then there is the Canon colour... Yes I may still regret it but you only live once. I believe at it's current used price it's a bargain, bonafide Hollywood cam.

  14. On the contrary, the C500 and 1DC are the best-specced cameras Canon offers, and the least successful. For a "professional" workflow, the smallest file sizes win out over 6k and such. Major network shows shot on the Alexa go with prores 422 hq than 444 because the savings in storage trump the extra image quality! For enthusiasts the Panasonic and Sony cameras are fine, but they do make compromises. The 1DC seems like a good deal now if you're a dSLR-style shooter. Canon dSLRs still have the best color.

  16. Why bother spending even 5k on a 1Dc with all it's regular DSLR flaws and lack of functions when SONY and other manufacturers will undoubtedly come out with other internal 4k cameras this coming year?? And you kept comparing the NX1 to the 1Dc, listing the pros of the NX1 vs the 1Dc and even argued the point over on Cinema5D (even with the price reduction your original points of pro NX1 are still relevant) to only buy one a week or so later?? I think you'll regret the $5,000 purchase before mid next year.

  18. Sorry Andrew, You lost me here. After so many articles bashing Canon, you are now buying one of their "old" product. (?!) (I can't wait seeing you with a 7D mark II when price drop.) I love reading blogs all over internet and I thought your needs were close to mine and followed you for long. Now, I have to admit you are not consistent at all. 1 month ago, you announced also the death of Canon DSLR for video. remember?! Yes, you will argue, that it was just a mater of price. But the price do not matter that much when this is your job to deliver quality... If you had bought the 1DC years ago, its image quality will make you have more joy and happy customers to make the price difference goes away very fast. To me, the 1DC today's price is more expensive as new camera are around the corner, even from Canon. It's a mistake to buy one now, it was right to buy it when it was just out. But, this is just me..

  19. just cleaned the screen and the bloody logos came off! :-) well... makes it easier to apply a screen protector. shogun cage almost ready, just need to reduce the weight... a bit like an iphone, first thing you have to do is buy a protective case... the brittle hdmi connection bothers me most... need to find better cables with better angles and flexibility.

  20. Thanks for your input. I went ahead and just got the Berkey for the flexibility and (hopefully!) quality.

  21. Thanks, I already have the $10 photo version. I can get Premiere for $20 a month (but doesn't include after effects, do I really need that? I won't be doing special effects). I might be able to get the $30 version because I own a copy of CS 6. I don't want to create any more threads than I have to, so here's some video footage I shot recently. Nothing great, but if you're like me, ANY footage from different cameras is interesting.

  22. @ Wedookfilms Give Flowmotion v2 a try...very reliable. I had problems with cards until I bought Sandisk Extreme pro 95 MB / 64gb. I also reverted to extracting my files out of the camera via the daggy Photofunshop software supplied with the GH2 to a file on my desktop...it works well and was advised to do it like that to ensure spanning. These days I don't use a patch cause I'm not that good at grading, and I reckon the look of a stock GH2 is good enough as it is. Cheers.

  23. Like I say I noticed it once and it went away after some menu changes. Sorry can't be of more help. I did shoot with a Sammy lens in the video, the 30mm F2.0 pancake. It behaved itself. Get the Nikon adapter and see if it does the same thing. If it works, then the lens aperture or something to do with the firmware is fiddling with the image. Here are the main things to turn off: Framing mode (adjusts brightness on the fly for live-view) Auto ISO (obviously) Check iris isn't moving during the problematic shot (look into the lens) Turn off auto display brightness Put metering on Multi Set Dynamic Range (Off) in stills menu and in movie menu turn Smart Range Plus + Off It could be a bug where a stills menu function like "Dynamic range" or "Framing Mode" is interfering with movie recording. In theory Framing Mode should only change the live-view display but it might impact the recording too due to a bug so turn it to off. Good luck! I know it can work fine. Just a matter of finding the culprit.

  24. Don't. You have the right to ask, and you deserve an answer, even if it's a simple "it's none of your business". Way too much emotions in the reactions, let this go.

  25. A great idea shot on an iPhone will be a far better viewing experience than a mediocre idea shot on an Arri Alexa. Ideas, ideas, ideas.... if I don't have an interesting idea, I don't shoot. These ideas come from everywhere - music, film, locations, experiences, personalities.... all moulded into one. These influences come WAY WAY before any camera gear choices. It makes for much more compelling and entertaining content in the long run.

  26. Hi guys i guess i should start from here, I am getting people from the NY area asking to video their weddings, i am located in Europe,Athens Gr so they will pay my air tickets, but i cant bring another videographer from europe as the cost is too high. i usually shoot with 2-3 shooters i am looking for a pro-semipro videographer that is local to New York to shoot second camera, documentary style HD, preferably with a ful frame canon camera and standard lenses to match my style. i know its not the most glamorous job for many, but we usually have a good time with my fellow shooters :) if you are interested please contact me via pm or at work@louloumeli.com
