  1. It feels like bashing Andrew is a new sport? He is controversial for sure, but guys... it are his top cameras of the year 2014? Why are people arguing over this nonsense when this is subjective thing? If Andrew states that the 1DC is his camera of the year it his genuine thing to do so - you dont have to agree. Just build your own top list.

  3. I just want to add, the D750 is the best stills camera I have ever used. Shot a wedding with it last week and I am just blown away with the file versatility and high ISO performance. Nikon knocked it out of the park. And the video quality has been a pleasant surprise. I feel like the D750 is everything the 5d3 should've been when it came out.

  4. Andrew, following your logic, this years' best camera BY FAR is Sony's F35, as there's some available s/h for the same amount you paid for your 1DC (£5000). So actually, you got a terrible deal. Therefore, the Rating should be: -1) Sony F35 (from a quarter of a million down to just £5000) and at a VERY long distance, everything else.

  6. Before the GH4, NX1, A7S and Shogun can you remember what we did for 4K on $1500-$2000 interchangeable lens cameras? No neither can I! 2014 has been a great year with some great technology. My top 5 1. The new for 2014 £5000 priced used 1D C! (It's a completely different prospect to what it was at £12,000) 2. A7S & Shogun (£3500) 3. GH4 (£1299) 4. NX1 (£1299) 5. Nikon D750 (£1799) Read the full article

  7. feels like many people who write these comments are spec and equipment fanatics, I remember an ad from Kodak "who has ideas, has future" and that is the truth :-)

  8. Cool list! I too am excited about what Samsung might bring in the future. They might be the company that has me go invest in 4k, unless Canon does otherwise. As far as jumping on the 4k bandwagon- the GH4 4k didn't convince me to switch, and I am tempted by the A7S low light capability, but I agree with the issues of color that was mentioned. I want to try a 1DC, but in America, I still see them around $10K on average, if I'm not mistaken. I disagree with the D750 recommendation though- I took my 5d3 against my friend's d750, and what holds true on other online tests is that the 5d3 has much better low light iso in video, and better controlled moire. So for my work the 5d3 is hard to beat because of its lenses, full frame, and low light performance- still making it truly the best "all around choice." And I don't even have to shoot RAW for my pro work. As a matter of fact, I just discovered one of my favorite shows thats become popular recently, lends its elegant cinematic look to being shot on 5ds and 7ds! It wasn't until after 2 seasons did they switch to the Arri. And finally, I was never bothered by the 5d's "softness." It allows me to control how much sharpness I want. Maybe for people who shoot landscape all day, they should definitely shoot with a GH4 or something "sharper." But last month I started shooting videos of LA agency models with my 5d, and damn- just adding +15 sharpness, it's too sharp! On close-ups I can clearly make out eye lashes and fine skin details, so I actually don't sharpen it too much. It's perfect for people. Not to mention the skin tones! So yeah, the 5d3 is great- but I agree, I am still somewhat disappointed with Canon. I was hoping my 5d3 would be my B cam this year as I waited for the c100m2, hoping it would improve with 4k options, or at least a better 4K to 1080p capture via internal high bitrate 4:2:2 codec. But my only hypothesis is that Canon is attempting to lead the consumer market when 4K becomes the *absolute norm* Interestingly enough, I'm now a full convert to using the Sony Alpha series of camera for my photography, and even though I have access to RED and GH4's, my 5d3 is my dedicated grab and go video camera haha

  9. Both the little E mount power zoom 16-50 OSS APSC kit lens and the APSC E mount 50 1.8 OSS are cheap and ok for video use in APSC mode on an A7s and both stabilized. A bit low res for stills on the a7s. More useful for stills on the higher res A7 cameras.

  10. I'm not convinced by the Canon 1DC being that greater buy 2nd hand at £6,700 (current eBay price) You can get the Sony FS7 for around that which has Professional onboard sound with XLR ports , built in NDs and 180fps super slow mo. I thought the point of getting a DSLR is because its a cheaper option for video. Once your spending over 5 grand then you might as well get a proper dedicated S35 video camera like the FS7 or one of the responses to it by Blackmagic or Canon in 2015. You will get more freelance work with one of those I reckon.

  11. You should probably change this feature to the top 5 cameras of the week, no?

  12. I don't disagree with the order of your top 5 but I do with the price you continue to mention of a second hand 1Dc and using that as an argument to have it on the top of your list as well, that's not a 5K camera, it still is a 12000 dollar camera. That's the same like waiting a few years and to buy a used gh4 for 500 dollar and comparing it against 200 dollar camera's and then saying it's the best camera money can buy or buying a old Alexa camera and saying it's better then a new 1DC. The 1Dc is on top of your list just because you where able to buy it second hand, if that was not the case the a7s would be on top of your list and you still would be trashing the 1DC and adding points to your top 25 list why the a7s is a better camera. It now looks more you are trying to justify your purchase. As I see it "new" price should be taken into consideration as well when comparing camera's and then the 1DC doesn't even belong on that list and should be compared to camera's in the same price range.

  13. Andrew, total bull!!! And you think that you are a filmmaker? Grow up, man! Because you own them , they are the best cameras? Haha, the best joke of 2014, is you!!!

  14. Yes the D750 is an incredibly impressive stills camera. Really enjoying it with the Sigma 50mm F1.4. Didn't expect the AF to be so good on that lens wide open. Build quality also amazing as is the 'feel' and handling. For video it is definitely 5th though.

  15. Okay, I'm not techy enough to do a proper DR test. However, I'll try and post my footage of the GH2/NX1 aliasing comparison. I used comparable settings and glass and clearly the NX1 produced slight aliasing on some air vents and hepa filters inside a gym and the GH2 didn't. So in at least that real world environment, the GH2 got the edge in aliasing control, however I'm not concerned with NX1 aliasing issues, the problem is nominal IMO. Ivar, yes, I hate those P and S setting, the GH2 had even more. That's one of things I like about the nx1 is the simpler dial.

  16. Yes does seem like a bug in firmware. Can anyone repeat Ivar's fix? Thanks for noting it down, might really help the others out.

  17. 1D C has gone back up to $12,000 at B&H now, from $9999. So the used prices if you can find one are genuinely a bargain.

  18. While potentially unfortunate, it's pretty simple folks. If Canon releases a crappy 5D4, vote with your wallet and don't buy it. It's one of the reasons I spend so much time learning how to make the GH4 and A7S work well. If we collectively can help each other figure out how to make skin tones, for example, competitive using the GH4 and A7S, the 5D4 becomes less relevant. While I hope that Canon releases a decent 5D4 (for video), if they don't we're not blocked as there are other great options out there. The mass market is where the big money is, so a great 5D4 will make them the most money. Their analytics may show that the 5D4's primary market is for stills, and that they'll lose money from the much smaller professional market if they provide all the features video/filmmakers are looking for in the 5D4. Everyone at all levels is sensitive to cost. We're living in a world of "good enough", especially for video/film production. The GH4, A7S, D750/810, etc. are all good enough. Competition and sharing our knowledge how to get the most from our gear will offset any reliance on any one camera manufacturer.

  20. This is a potential signal that 5D4 is going to be unhackable. It is rumored to be announced in about a month, and I'm pretty sure many video users will be holding off on a 5D4 purchase until ML hacks it. I know I will. So they could be trying to pre-emptively neutralize 5D3 to leave people no choice once everyone realizes the RAW party is over...

  22. A while ago EOSHD had dissolved into a non-productive confrontational forum. Other forums bashed EOSHD and personally insulted Andrew Reid. I suggested to Andrew (as did others) that he use moderators to help clean up the forum: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/5456-potential-changes-to-the-forum-to-prioritise-good-content-suggestions-welcome/?page=3. I was a moderator at Cinema5D but stopped going there after it moved to Planet5D and died (I made it clear I didn't have time to be a moderator again). Politely challenging someone with facts and logic and focusing on what is being discussed is not confrontational. It's how we learn and grow. I learn a great deal doing research in these discussions. I share the results with everyone. When one runs out of facts or logic, many times they turn to emotion and begin personal attacks. In debate, this is called ad hominem, and is an instant fail. When the site owner is participating in ad hominems with antagonistic and confrontational interactions, that sends the wrong message to the rest of the moderation team, and also encourages members to exhibit the same behavior. Leading by example is important. Is this post confrontational? It's critical and fair given what has transpired in this thread. Perhaps the current moderation team doesn't have time to help out. If Ebrahim has time, I think he'd make a great moderator. Perhaps there are others.

  23. What JCS said was challenging, but lafilm has made it much worse with his comments, there is no need for such confrontational attitudes from anyone. Especially in that tone. It's fair for people to judge from their own conclusions, different eyes see different things. At least be civil about it.

  24. About 11 usable stops for 1Dc seems consistent with Adam Wilts review from March 2013. When he stretches it in post he gets to 13 stops. Doesn't really matter. The point here is that Canon Log is a beautifully designed picture profile specifically for 8bit after carefully evaluating both technical as well as psycho visual aspects with many screenings before experiences DPs. There is a DR craze going on with the false notion that a camera is supposed to capture everything from the darkest shadow to the brightest highlight. Welcome to amateur hour. Just as the photographer/cinematographer carefully selects his/her framing, he/she also carefully select what light to include. Blown out highlights should be beautifully rendered. Light falling into shadow creates drama. It should be obvious that both the Canon 1Dc as well as the A7s should be able to create satisfactory images. The error will fall on the operator. The 1Dc captures the image internally to CF-cards with no fuss, which is nice.

  25. For video, Canon rates the 1DC at 12 stops. Sony rates the A7S at 15 stops. In lab conditions with the Xyla 21 chart, the 1DC gets around 12 and the A7S around 14. For useable DR Samuel and MacGregor got 12 for the A7S and by their metric of useable DR would expect the 1DC to be 11 stops (dropping 1-2 stops measured for useable DR). Asking us to look at your examples without modifying them to explore useable DR doesn't make sense, as we'd most certainly make changes for any real work. Even so, your examples generally show more useable DR with the A7S. Comments that imply our eyes don't work are unprofessional, immature, and antagonistic. If you'd like to create drama for page views vs. an honest search for truth, wherever it may lead, how can we take anything you say seriously?

  26. If you're pretty good at shooting stills (looks like you appreciate light) and just transitioning to motion pictures, I think the option of having 5-axis stabilization is actually a valuable tool. I found it incredibly nice to be able to grab steady video shots while spontaneously holding the camera in awkward positions...and not have to fret about the video being distractingly shaky. In that sense, it's a lot like just "grabbing a shot" when doing stills. Want to hold the camera high above your head with one hand while standing on a chair? You can make it work quickly and easily. That's not to be underestimated. I just wish Olympus' video was a bit more advanced as my main client is slightly more demanding than what Olympus video delivers, but even if it less than most, it's still quite decent. I used one of their cams for a month on the road and found it a lot of fun. That's saying something. For me, it's a camera that encouraged creativity by offering the ability to quickly get shots I would't get otherwise. Not sure if you've considered that aspect of motion pictures, but it can be a great tool depending on how and what you're trying to shoot. A lot of people go on and on ...and on and on... about sensor quality in forums such as these that focus almost exclusively on the technology --it's almost as if we forget around here that there are so many various aspects of motion picture production that go into making good video and it's not about having the greatest sensor. Not even close, in my opinion. Andrew Reid has even posted examples here of a young filmmaker working with a 5 year old Canon ti camera who's films are more interesting and visually engaging than the most advanced production companies with the latest and greatest gear. Meanwhile many of us gripe about the indignity of having 12 stops of dynamic range rather than 13 as if our professional lives depend on it. As I'm sure you're well aware of, since you're making great photos with decent but not great consumer gear, a successful image is NOT always about the sensor IQ. However, if the best available IQ on a budget is a top priority for you then, yeah, you'd probably look elsewhere. I have a GX7 I've been using a lot. I like it. I dig small cams. (man, I'm on a coffee rant...) Aside from that, what's with your shop? Not allowing you to shoot in store with your own SD card? That's kind of obnoxious.

Agreed and why I decided to build a set. I currently have the 21, 28 (2.8), 35 (2.8), 50 (1.4), 28-85 Zoom and am awaiting the arrival of the 85 (1.4). I'm looking forward to shooting my next film with them
