anamorphic photography is underrated. Looks great, guys!3 points -
The important thing is the way it renders when reaching the extremes of the DR and that's where most cheaper cameras have a lot of trouble.2 points

I get in my second NX1 camera today and it was having the exposure drift problem so after setting it to the same settings as my other one i found the one thing that is making the problem a extra menu of items with one setting that needs to be changed.. Here is what i posted on Facebook Look at the back of the camera lcd you will see a arrow at the top of the screen in the center. Tap on it and turn off auto display brightness.. that was the only other setting my older camera had changed and now with auto display brightness turned off it no longer has a exposure problem no more jumping up and down and this fixes the recorded video to..1 point

Samsung NX1 Firmware 1.20 Coming Soon
Hitfabryk reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
This is an incredibly interesting camera, shame there isn't much footage online (and most of what's available is rubbish). I think I might just buy it and film loads of music videos, I have the feeling in my gut that when the camera is pushed at a professional level, there is going to be some very special sauce in there somewhere!1 point -
Alternatives to Rode Videmic Pro

*(forgot you said it didn't need to be on camera) http://www.amazon.com/TAKSTAR-SGC-598-Photography-Interview-Microphone/dp/B00E58AA0I/ref=sr_1_sc_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1420751673&sr=8-2-spell&keywords=takstar+shot+gun+mic $35. its got a +10Db switch I bought one of these just to check it out and to have better backup sound when recording to separate devices. Ive seen some pretty good comparisons on youtube between this and the Rode Video Mic (not the pro one i think). Its really not too bad, considering the price. Pretty good indoors. I dont really have that great of an ear for picking up small differences in audio equipment though, so I am not the best person to ask. I think I read some where that this mic is manufactured by the same company that manufactures Rode's stuff too. not sure though1 point -

Opening a can of worms.... The full frame look comes from the ability to shoot with longer lenses while maintaining the same field of view. Longer lenses have a shallower dof. longer slower lenses also tend to be lower distortion and sharper than wider faster lenses so the 3d pop is pronounced. shoot gh4 and you need a 25mm f1.4 to get the same look as a cheap 50mm f2 on full frame. however the 50mm will always outdo the 25mm. Nearly all users of smaller sensors who haven't used bigger sensors will argue this fact, claiming shallow dof isnt important, yet will always get excited by a fast wide lens that gives them the ability to get the shallow dof if they want it. If shallow dof and wide fov's are top priority a full frame sensor will save you money on lens purchases at the moment. the ability of smaller sensors being able to match the look depends on how many more advances there are in lens making technology. lens tech is slower than sensor tech at the moment and the thought of paying huge amounts for a small format 25mm f1.4 in order to obtain a basic 50mm/f2 look seems like madness to me.1 point

I'm admittedly very new, extremely amateur at photography but I do own an NX1 with that lens. It's the only lens I've used with it (only one I own!). I like it. I can't say with confidence much more than that since I have no credibility, but there are boatloads of reviews that say the optical quality is good, the AF is quiet, and the OIS is good. To me these all seem true. I've had no problems. Even the exposure change that people are talking about hasn't been an issue with the camera--but I've had smart range off the whole time. I'm not doing tons of focus pulling or anything yet, so for the manual focus by wire I can't comment.1 point
-
I can't talk from personal experience, but I've heard the samsung lenses manual focus is by wire. Setting up repeatable focus pulls and follow focus might be tricky with them. If you're shooting primarily video, you might go with the art lenses. Plus the art line can get the mounts switched so if sigma supports NX mounts in the future they could be setup for that. If weather sealing is a priority then the two samsung pro lenses are the only options at the moment. Optically either is an excellent option.1 point

Oh no - 12 stops dynamic range
Xavier Plagaro Mussard reacted to Jimmy for a topic
If you can't make something look good with 12 stops, nice highlight rolloff and some lights, you are need to work on your skills. That's the point you really can no longer blame your tools (and the reason I think the 5DRaw will keep me happy for a long, long time).1 point -
Don't compare the figures they give to film with the ones they rate sensors with. I got into shooting stills with c-41 (portra 400, 160, ektar,etc...) on medium format, developing and scanning them on my own and film (specially portra 400) has impressive DR. I might do a comparison with the d800 (14 stops @ iso 100), but I think portra 400 (motion picture stock is supposed to be a little or much better) has more latitude.1 point

Are you trying to discredit me because I'm unfamiliar with the terminology? That's really fine. I never claimed to be an expert of any kind. I'm just pointing out what I see. My professional knowledge doesn't play into that.1 point

Do any of these fixes address to exposure drift issue we've been struggling with? Why isn't that front and center?1 point -
While the low-light capability of the A7s is very, very appealing to me, I think I'd rank the GH4 sans speed booster just slightly above the A7s sans Shogun because what 4k brings to the table for me outweighs the crop and ISO downsides. And WITH BMPCC speed booster, GH4 is for me way ahead of the A7s even with Shogun. Remember that with the almost two full stops of light gathering gain you'd rarely have to go above 1600 ISO, thus avoiding the loss of detail and color you get at 3200 and above, and, the crop is s35, which is arguably more cinematic than FF, since most movies have s35 DOF rather than full frame. For me s35 is the sweet spot and FF DOF is often TOO shallow. But to each his own..1 point

Lucy - amazing color: shot on Sony F65
jcs reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
Oh yeah, I really liked 5th Element. Campy B-Movie enjoyment. Lucy should have been the same, but it tried to get serious. Luc can't really get serious. He doesn't have the chops for it. Still, fun director.1 point -

Damn. That was some serious damage on the front of that Iscorama 54! I wouldn't have had any hope for salvation of such a lens. Incredible result after polishing and recoating!1 point -
Lucy touched a topic that has actually a lot more to show, so I think it was a bit superficial compared to what it could have been, but I still enjoyed it very much and it was refreshing to see something new and unusual.1 point

What is the point of Zeiss ZF Primes?
pablogrollan reacted to fuzzynormal for a topic
First of all, are you the filmmaker? I'll assume so...? Anyway, Question: "What is the point of Zeiss ZF Primes?" My answer: People like you use them because they give you unique image quality. How important is that unique IQ to the overall production? It depends. I do believe that if you're capable of creating good content that's engaging (and you are/do) the viewer isn't going to care if one lens is somewhat superior than another. Is that what you're insinuating? Personally, I try to prioritize creativity over intense technicality in my productions. For instance, I'm far more impressed with your decision to create a beautiful sequence of running shots through the woods than I am about whatever lens or camera you shot it on. If you're comfortable with the images you get from more affordable lenses and cameras, there's nothing wrong with that as far as I'm concerned. Some filmmakers (many on this website) prioritize the technical craft, some worry more about the art. Filmmakers craft with both, obviously, but I tend to think the former is so much more important than the latter. Neither is the wrong approach though. If you like twisting the knobs, that's perfectly fine. Still, I'd rather watch a film by someone with something to say with their images rather than someone trying to show me their most technically accomplished images. And, of course, if you're working with a crew you can rely on the technical expertise of colleagues while concentrating on the creative, so that's all part of the mix too. Plus, ultimately, the editor of this film kicked ass. Great images, yes, but the rhythm and flow of the material was perfect.1 point -

EOSHD’s top 5 cameras of the year 2014
Mat_Design reacted to noa for a topic
I don't disagree with the order of your top 5 but I do with the price you continue to mention of a second hand 1Dc and using that as an argument to have it on the top of your list as well, that's not a 5K camera, it still is a 12000 dollar camera. That's the same like waiting a few years and to buy a used gh4 for 500 dollar and comparing it against 200 dollar camera's and then saying it's the best camera money can buy or buying a old Alexa camera and saying it's better then a new 1DC. The 1Dc is on top of your list just because you where able to buy it second hand, if that was not the case the a7s would be on top of your list and you still would be trashing the 1DC and adding points to your top 25 list why the a7s is a better camera. It now looks more you are trying to justify your purchase. As I see it "new" price should be taken into consideration as well when comparing camera's and then the 1DC doesn't even belong on that list and should be compared to camera's in the same price range.1 point -
