Samsung NX1 vs Canon C300

Coming soon. New firmware is great! But wait till you see what is in store for the GH4 ;)3 points -
2015 has been unexpectedly busy already work-wise. This is awesome but it means that I have no time for personal projects and so I'm selling my Canon/Kowa anamorphic setup. I've used this mainly for home movies and fun little things and just love that look.... but I can't justify it sitting lonely on the shelf like a guilty secret. Here's the breakdown from L-R: Komputerbay 64Gb 1066x CF card2 x Canon batteriesCanon 7D3rd party battery gripStrapEOS lens capM42/EOS adapterHelios 44-2 58/2 (has a 49mm-58mm ring glued to the front)58mm-52mm ringRedstan ClampKowa 8-Z AnamorphicRedstan Filter Clamp72mm-77mm ring77mm lens capAll in really good condition apart from the helios which is in the condition of a helios! Oh, and a battery charger of course. And here is the last thing I shot entirely with this combo: If you are looking to get into anamorphic RAW shooting this kit is everything you need on the hardware side to get started. Blending the 7D raw with the helios and kowa gets you a look very like 16mm film to me with all of the incredible flexibility of raw video. £1000 including paypal fees and tracked UK delivery. Discounts for cash and you are welcome to come inspect in Oxford. Will post overseas at buyers expense. If you want me to shoot something specific or you have any questions message me!2 points

Samsung NX1 vs Canon C300

I think maybe you need a more active imagination. This capability has existed for years now.2 points -

Firstly lenses don't "resolve" a certain number of megapixels, what happens is contrast starts to go down as details get closer together. This is characterised by the MTF of the lens. The sensor has it's own MTF. System resolution is determined by the product of the lens MTF and sensor MTF, thus an improvement in either can lead to an improvement in system resolution. Secondly most EF lenses will provide excellent results with a 50MP sensor over the most important central region of the image, as demonstrated by years of FF lens use on APS-C. I'd bet many would perform adequately even at the borders. They certainly wont be any worse than on a 22MP sensor, whilst at the same time you will get less alisaing on demosaicing artifacts by virtue of oversampling. It is sad to see the artificial segregation of the camera through downgrading video features and ISO settings. I'm very much hoping Sony can manage a line-skipped 1.1x crop 4K video from their next 50MP sensor, that should resize down to a very nice 1080p file.2 points

I think Canon know exactly what they are doing, unfortunately for all of us who'd like them to be more innovative. They have the most complete stills system, and the most complete video system, albeit over the last 3 years these systems have become separate bodies that share the same lens set. But how many times have you read a post where they say: "I would have changed system, but I'm heavily invested in L glass". The poster could sell the glass and not lose much money, but lenses are an emotional thing for us video and stills makers, they work like our eyes and capture what we see. And with the turbulence of the DSLR/DSLM video market over the last 5 years how many people are going to brave a decision that will see them lose money and take a hit emotionally, when just around the corner the camera they've been waiting for might be delivered. So yes, Canon are playing the game well, and have been spending their brand capital heavily to keep the competition at bay, and this is the year for them to make their move or lose a dangerous amount of ground in the £1-2K market. We all know that Panasonic and Sony currently have the best all round cameras in our price/size bracket, and as much as we all love using vintage glass etc., what we really want is a mature complete system like Canon have. Sensitivity, DR, Colour, usability, and... lenses. Lenses designed for our favourite system. With respect to the "Rebel" buyers, it only takes a critical mass of people to blow their friends away by showing them what their Olympus or Panasonic can do for Canon to start losing their critical "lead in" market. So for god's sake, show your friends, and keep the market competitive. It's going to be a very interesting year. We should be excited not angry. I don't think they will, but if Canon rest on their laurels then so be it, because we don't really need them any more.2 points

FS: Kowanon Anamorphic RAW Starter Kit (Canon/Kowa/Helios)
Cosimo murgolo reacted to j-oc for a topic
It depends a bit on frame rate, normal vs 3x crop, continuous or buffer limited - but at 25fps I get: (1.2:1ish) 1504x1156 - continuous (4:3ish) 1600x1156 - continuous (1.5:1) 1728x1156 - 42 seconds (16:9) 1728x972 - continuous (2.39:1) 1728x724 - continuous These last two upscale to fill a 1080 frame really well. You can get all sorts of wacky huge resolutions in 3x crop mode but only nine or ten seconds of footage before recording stops. The Kowa is 2x. I shot that vid at 1472x1156, unsqeezed and scaled down to fit 1920x804, slightly cropping left and right.1 point -
On a more serious note: Andrew, I'd love to read a write up about the new NX1 firmware and your opinion on it vs the GH4.1 point

Complete Set of "Character Lenses?"
Oliver Daniel reacted to The Chris for a topic
The C/Y's are awesome. There's a massive thread on Reduser that covers them in depth and lots of other resources on the interweb. I prefer the MMJ's because of the ninja star bokeh on the German versions, but if you like it you can save over the MMJ's in some cases (35/1.4, 100/2). With the C/Y's you can get close to the Samyang range with the 18/4, 21/2.8 (one of the best wides ever made), 28/2.8, the Hollywood 28/2, 35/1.4 or 2.8, 50/1.4 or 1.7, 85/1.4 or 2.8, 135/2, 2.8 and 3.5 IIRC, plus a few zooms - though you probably know the Contax zooms are one touch. That can sometimes be a pain, but they're nice. I have the 35-70. There are others as well, the Makros are great and the 100/2 is what I would take over any of the 85's or 135's - its simply awesome. The C/Y's have the classic zeiss rendering, very contrasty and that 3d look. I always wrestle with going C/Y or Leica R for a set of matched lenses, haven't been able to decide yet.1 point -

Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art Announced
Julian reacted to AaronChicago for a topic
I'm also curious to see how the 18-35 E-M5II combo looks. I'm thinking about selling my Panasonic 12-35 f2.8 and buying an E-M5II.1 point -
Sigma is really doing an awesome job with the ART series line-up. Gotta love the optical quality and the fair price. I think the 18-35mm f/1.8 is some of the greatest value lenses out there for the buck. I'd love to go and pair it up with a lens turbo, get the E-M5II and give its IBIS a go... Keep doing what you're doing Sigma. I'm sure this 24mm f/1.4 is a winner. Oh, and can I just for a second also praise the actual look of the ART lenses themselves? They just look gorgeous.1 point

Travel Film shot on the NX1
Henry Gentles reacted to jpommier for a topic
Hello, I wanted to just share a short travel film that I shot on the NX1 (pre 1.20 firmware) of my trip to the southern part of Iceland. http://vimeo.com/117027464 I was initially looking at a GH4 to replace my old 7D but opted to wait for the NX1. I wanted another hybrid camera that could do a decent job with stills and video. So far, I'm really enjoying the camera! There are a lot of things to like and a few things to loathe (i.e., rolling shutter, oh my god!). I just wanted to share and say thank you for covering the NX1 so thoroughly on the site.
