  1. I think canon needs to achieve a much higher dynamic range now as well. I think that is a major factor in why arri dominated the oscars. Another factor that makes the arri sensor look better is its ability to clearly distinguish colors variations. See this article comparing red dragon, epic and alexa. When shoot a chart with the red epic the vector scope shows the points with much more color smear than the alexa. A smeared color patch means that hues along that smear will all look the same. There won’t be much subtlety between hues. http://www.dvinfo.net/article/ultra-hd/dragon-color-does-tungsten-or-daylight-make-a-difference.html

  2. Utterly uncalled for. Why stoop this low just because you assumed a different viewpoint from someone else? I see preschool and grade school children that conduct themselves with much better manner and less reproach. I have seen a good number of genuinely kind and even altruistic gestures from the gamut of photo/video forums across the blogosphere, but occasionally it's posts like this that flies in the face of basic decency and humility. Not only that it does not adds, but I believe it is outbursts like this that has a deleterious effect to the visual artisans and technicians community as a whole. If this trend continues, then I think we will have much more to loose than gain in our common pursuit for knowledge and growth here. Perhaps the great veil of anonymity through the iron curtain of the internet is conducive to malicious behaviors. I can hardly imagine such things being said in the physical presence of another person with so many to witness. No one is infallible, I had my own blunders just as you had yours and everyone else here and elsewhere. If you're having a bad day or for whatever reason had succumbed to your own emotional impulse, then that's understandable (though not excusable). I think a simple apology maybe in order here, of course that's entirely up to you. I don't know Max, I have read some of his blog comments, and believe him to be a learned and cultivated man. Although I may not necessarily agreed with some of the viewpoints he espoused, I do feel that he was offering constructive and cogent feedback to Andrew for the betterment of the blog. Everyone can exercise and benefit from a bit more civility, especially toward another artist and/or technician who shared the same passion for filmaking. Lets hold ourselves to a higher standard. Vitriol and ad hominen attacks are better left at the landfill. ========================================================================================================================================= On to the topic at hand. I don't doubt that the FS7's menu layout and operations are atrocious, though I much rather that Steve Job was not employ as a reference model, not because he was incapable of conceiving some of the most functional and beautiful design in gadgetry that the world has ever seen and put to good use, but precisely because he may have accomplish more by being more tactful and less corrosive/coercive with his interpersonal dealings/interactions. It's one thing being assertive and quite another being aggressive, and for some, that's a fine line. Shortly after Job passed, one of the senior executive at a top management consultancy asserted that Job exhibited his personal traits and management style not because they were particularly effective, but because they required less skills--soft skills that is. Agree or not, there is no denial of the man's legacy in technical and design prowess and the success that persists to this day. Personally, I think a more apt example for us here in the community is none other than James Cameron, whose personality is very much fungible with Job's, but has gone through a long evolution through his time spent out in the field in scientific explorations and expeditions. Cameron has recounted and acknowledged his shortcomings early in his career in directing the performance and work of his cast and crew. He readily admitted that a more collaborative approach, one that he had cultivated through his work with countless teams of scientists, deep sea explorers, and technical personnel would have suited him better as a filmaker in those formative years.

  4. Sorry to hear you just wasted your money! Send it back and wait for the NX500. The earlier NX models were total trash for video... abject trash. GH2 is MILES better!

  5. Yeah, you going to hold that rig handheld? Where are you going to put those mic/recievers for that ELR input? Ergonomics matter when you have to deliver a product. Also HDMI is a HORRID thing to rely on.

  6. It is smartphones AND apps... The two are symbiotic. The cameras on modern smart phones are great, the apps are great... I can shoot and edit raw images on my Nexus. As Mozim says though, this will help separate the two industries... Which I think is a good thing. Canon, Nikon etc can cater to people who care about lasting imagery, rather than shoot and share. You say "no wifi on high end",,,, it doesn't need it, it doesn't need grading apps, facebook sharing apps.... Just a very low battery consumption bluetooth, like the NX1 has. Send the raw to your phone.... Grade and share (while the raw file is uploaded to dropbox, for backup). Let the phone do what it does best. Simple.

  7. those achromats really help things drastically. flare is beautiful to my eyes - I love the coating choice slr magic used. edges have a bit too much fringing to my eyes - especially since this was shot on gh4-4k. what will it be like with s35> probably even worse. Overall though, this seems like some of the best results from modern cost effective anamorphics I have seen in recent years. Those edges still feel a bit too much like a century 1.33x in terms of quality though. From what I've seen this doesn't quite match what I've seen from the mighty schneider + FM unit. but certainly has a pleasing aesthetic to my eyes.

  8. +1 for the D750 if you are already invested in Nikon glass. It's superb for stills and a more than capable video camera. You should still be able to get a decent price for the D600 though you should have traded it in for a D610 when you could.

  9. Add the Nikon D5200 too for an option to consider at the low end, a nice matching/complementary camera to your D600 too.

  10. I heard next Nikon 1 will get 4K video, you can wait on that too. or get D750 and sell the D600?

  11. I would recommend to try to postpone decisions till you need to, theres NAB in April and hopefully before that the Nikon D7200, which there is a small chance will be a big step up for video! D600 isnt soo terrible for whatever you need to shoot before May

  12. Rich you're right. I shot both and here's my thoughts: SLR Magic 2x just like other 2x adapters need the right lens. I have had a hard time pairing the right lens. Older lenses like Russian lenses or the Tokina lens don't pair well. The SLR Magic 2x is best used with modern lenses. That's unfortunate because it becomes more clinical and less like the "anamorphic look" that we all strive for. The other problem is the dual focus, and I've talked at length with Andrew Chan about this. It doesn't have a distance scale so the focus is different for each taking lens. The focus plane is also sharper and smaller, so you can't shoot it wide open aperture. Taking lenses must be 1-2 stops from wide open, which is F2.8-F4 or even F5.6. Old lenses usually F8. This is in sharp contrast to the FM Module with the Cinelux, and I believe it has more to do with the Cinelux rather than the FM. The Cinelux is sharp, and it works very well with old lenses. Also you can shoot wide open, meaning F1.4 is sharp. This also gives great character especially to closeup shots of faces. Add to that the FM is single focus and you have a clear winner. The downsides to the FM is that it is HEAVY, HUGE size, MUST be rigged, no way can you run-and-gun with it. I'm still on the fence as I haven't been able to shoot a lot with the SLR Magic 2x. I've just shot what I could, and even then I admit it's not what I want to shoot. I hope to use it more and get better results. But there are serious compromises and I have addressed it with SLR Magic.

  13. I think SLR Magic may have dropped the ball for the second time.. It's as if they look at results from beautiful anamorphics like the iscorama and then design something that delivers the exact opposite. Their 1.33x lens didn;t have any anamorphic aesthetic, and it looks like it may have not been because of the minimal squeeze ratio, but their process of designing the lens. This, like the 1.33x lens seems to miss the point of anamorphic completely. No character, yet all of the hassle and rather poor edge capability too - for the 4k crop mode (which is more than a 2x crop of full frame) I see rather unpleasant aberrations at the edges and a significant degradation on the performance of the panasonic lens. Going from 720p up to 4k there is no additional resolution from what I see. This will get worse on s35, and probably real nasty on full frame. Your FM video has the anamorphic look:- Why does the SLR magic not have the same 'magic' I see from the video above? Both were shot on 4k crop mode, both by the same person. Both are 2x

  14. Bingo. The full frame DOF at f1.2 on an 85mm is so insanely thin as to be impractical for recording objects in motion. Sure, it's nice to have the option available, but the applications of that 'full frame look' are so niche, I don't think it should be a major consideration for the majority of video shooters. Stils are another story.

  15. Most medium format cameras, digital backs and lenses are designed by and sold to people while they are drunk. If sober, they'd just go for aps-c and not spend £20k on digital backs. :).

  16. Bigger formtas are totally useless, specially medium format. Don't buy any lenses for it, its totally crap, expensive and complicated. Largeformat cameras are only sold to rich people and fashion photographers who need to appear professional with big cameras. The obvious differences you can see in comparisons between different formats are only in our minds.

  17. Thanks for the link but I'll keep the $1500 I'm not keen on adding more adaptors than absolutely necessary as they can add chromatic aberration, softness etc. The comparison shots of the woman are a bit misleading because the majority of the background being the cityscape is so far away its going to have much the same blur no matter what its shot on. The railing thats closer the difference is more apparent. I agree with what your saying but I love my A7s more than my F5. I can't believe I would ever say that after 18 months with the F5 and about 8 months with the A7s. Friday I had a shoot in the city and I'd lent out the A7s and I remember thinking "I'll have to use the F5" Have to!! as if its a sad thing to have to use the F5.. How interesting is that. To me the F5 was about the most perfect camera I could imagine and bam along comes this little A7s and the F5 gets left behind. Its not full frame vs super 35 why I like the A7s. Its the speed I can work with it. How customisable its menus, buttons and the function page are. How small it is. How well the Shogun works with it. And how beautiful its photos are. How I can remove it from its cage, put a 20mm pancake lens on it and slip it in my pocket. How accessible the SD cards are compared to SXS. The F5 is technically better (although visually indifferent to me) but the A7s is more fun to use. Faster, less menus to dig through to change anything.
