  1. Andrew, my favourite part of this article was the part about the GH4 at the end...

  2.   Magic Lantern just turned your 5D Mark III into a desktop computer. The cameras (running ARM processor and up to 512MB of RAM) are seen in this video booting into the Linux kernel, version 3.19. The development paves the way for third party apps to run on the camera and to control all functions of the device. 3. I created a fast transcoding app for in-house use and thought it might be useful to others: you can get it here. I added benchmarking features so you can easily see performance differences between codecs and settings: ETA to complete, MB/s, and FPS. With example NX1 files, it can do ~46fps converting 4K H.265 to 1080p ProRes LT (12-Core 2010 Mac Pro running Win7). Sony A7S Mp4 files can be converted to ProRes LT at 192 FPS. It can rewrap A7S and FS700 files for use with Resolve 11 and audio. Also works well for high-quality GH4 4K to 1080p (Lanczos scaler). 422 10-bit H.264 (XAVC) in both IPB & ALL-I as well as H.265 output also provided for experimental use.

  4. I think the Amazon page mock-up with 3 answered questions about a product that doesn't exist yet and dated 13th April is a little suspect. The dynamic range of 15-16 stops also seems like a rather big leap from 12 in just one generation of Panasonic sensor. But the biggest giveaway is that Sol says 4K is wider than in HD mode now because of the multi-aspect sensor, whilst saying it takes a 1:1 area for 4K like before. Therefore a 4K of less than 2x crop as he suggests wouldn't be possible, because the sensor is still 16MP. As for 'a mistake' to publish the blog post early. A mistake is one thing, to Tweet about it and Facebook it quite another He knows his stuff though! He is welcome to the extra followers, probably deserves it. Nice blog.

  5. They appear to be using FFMPEG elements for file reading (LGPL libraries vs. FFMPEG itself) and appear to be using AVFoundation (etc.) which is native OSX if using Apple's ProRes for final output. At which point AVFoundation supports H.265 decoding (does it already?), FFMPEG (and libraries) wouldn't be needed at all to transcode H.265 into ProRes. AVFoundation is super easy to code for (especially compared to DirectShow on Windows). If AVFoundation already supports H.265, a custom tool for H.265 to ProRes would be fairly quick & easy to create (a few hours of coding- GUI, etc. would take more time). MainConcept also has decent tools/libraries (possibly much faster than the free/GPL/LGPL stuff), though the licensing cost would up product cost.

  6. Tried some NX1 files (80mbps 4K) with the same settings on my i7 3770 (4 cores 8 threads), 16GB RAM. I'm getting about 6.0 MB/s and 16 FPS when converting 4 files at once (I can't set Max Jobs higher than 4). It makes sense your 12 core machine is faster, but how come you get dubble the fps but the data rate is not that much different? Does that depend on the source files? When using RockyMountain Movie Converter (4K ProRes LT) it says it's working with a bitrate of around 275000 kbps. This translates to around 35MB/s. The 4 files (46 seconds in total) take about 90 seconds to convert. With Photon the same job is done in 68 seconds. The resulting files from Photon are a lot smaller though (600MB vs 1,5 GB for RMMC) with those settings. Also just noticed that the files from Photon have less contrast - RMMC seems to clip the blacks and whites where Photon still shows detail. Interesting, because the RMMC file looks the same as the original file when played back, but this might be another playback issue with contrast/blacklevels...

  7. I've used both a c100 and an nx1. I'll just say that to me personally the dynamic rand is definitely close! I honestly didn't see that much of a difference at all in Dr on the nx1. I'll also add that the nx1 is a great camera that'd I'd personally choose to shoot on over a c100 or c300 at this point.

  10. I've been using the camera for a bit and as a B-roll on a C100 shoot. Seems like there is about a stop less on the NX1. Perfectly usable. Name of the game really is protect the highlights on the camera, but thankfully it does have very clean highlight rolloff even if you do blow them out. Great thread on DVXuser: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?334819-Samsung-NX1-Log-Gamma-Dynamic-Range I don't use wondershare, I use Rocky Mountain or Photon. Hopefully we will see what the camera is truly capable of when an editor like Premiere supports it natively.

  13. I bought it for 1510€ two months ago (+ the 16-50S lens for 1000€). I never expected the NX1 falls in price so fast. I will remember this for next time, thanks Samsung.

  14. No, shooting 'flat' on a DSLR is nothing like shooting real LOG. I use VisionColor profiles on my canon because I like the look, but not because I'm squeezing a ton of extra details out of the sensor.

  16. Not sure GoPro can be considered niche anymore? I was on vacation this week in Iceland, we went to a place called the blue lagoon.. A big tourist attraction, and I would say 1 in 4 of the younger tourists had a GoPro to take video/photos of them in the pool. I was shocked.

  18. I did order a D750 should be here tomorrow. This will update my two older D700 cameras and replace the Samsung NX1 for any photo shooting as the NX1 kinda sucks for photography in any low light at all my older 6 year old D700 takes better photos at any iso then the NX1. The NX1 photo quality is more like my even older Nikon D40 6MP camera. Will do some NX1 D750 HD video tests and want to see how the D750 video compares the NX1 4k all mixed together to see if the 750 can be used as a B camera and the main camera for low light video shooting. As for the Nikon 24-120 F4 lens the one i have is very sharp i got it when the lens just come out one of the very first batch maybe that is why. I also had the 24-70 2.8 and my 24-120 is every bit as sharp so i sold the 24-70 and the 24-120 f4 almost never is off one of my D700 cams. It also takes very sharp video with my NX1.

  19. Take it by rec.709 you are using a standard Canon profile like Portrait or something on your 60D. Well S-LOG is LOG so a different league. It flattens the full dynamic range of the sensor and packs it into the codec. It grades WAY better than the 60D or indeed any of the Canon or Sony rec.709 profiles because simply put, there's more to work with in the image. Nothing is burnt or crushed or baked into the image.

  23. I really hope in this GH4 update: I'd love to have cropmarks for safe area (2.35:1 etc...), RAW and ProRes 422 (HQ) files direct to SD cards in BPCC style... And, since I never liked the GoPro "look", it would be great if Canon could offer an alternative!
