Kessler press release regarding termination of business relationship with Philip Bloom
IronFilm and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
This is going to turn into a nasty little online shaming match isn't it? Have some compassion for both sides as they both lose. And think about your own lives and if you lost your career, how you would want people to behave... respectfully or not?3 points -
Kessler press release regarding termination of business relationship with Philip Bloom
pablogrollan and 2 others reacted to Geoff CB for a topic
Is there any proof? Did he admit to it? Or are we just participating in a witch hunt? We live in a time where a reputation can be destroyed by one accusation and I would be very hesitant to publically shame the man until we have more information. If I'm wrong and it's true, I will no longer have respect for Philip and hope he and the victims get help. I hope it's false.3 points -
Shot on the Sony F55 W Zeiss Ultraprime Lenses and Angeniux 25-250 lens Filmworks was the local production company - shot in Dubai. An amazing experience. Why the F55? Because it's light - it can handle insane heat - it has a global shutter and native ISO is 1250 - good for overcranking at night! And I had it on a steadicam for a lot of the shoot - and did I mention it was 120 degree days and it weighs about 6 lbs? Amazing production and team - this was a blast!2 points

Kessler press release regarding termination of business relationship with Philip Bloom
Ed_David and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
It is true, no court of law has ruled on this at all and therefore we should be careful about being judge jury and executioner on the internet. I am sure the truth will eventually be decided by a real judge and not us. I hope one day we can forgive Philip but he's got to tell the truth and come clean first. I hope it isn't true. I feel really twisted up inside about how to react... on the one hand to not react at all, to say nothing is to perform a cover up and deny a voice to the victim's allegations... that's the easy way to deal with it as most companies will do I am sure, just sit on the fence and not say a word and continue to work with Philip. I am not like that. I feel like I need to know the truth and take a stance either way. I would like to encourage people on this thread to show restraint and respect for the alleged victims and not to slander anyone out of anger however understandable that anger may be. I am for one, furious. Then we can get back to more positive subjects, like cameras!2 points -
I don't know Eric. To me Kessler is a company that sells stuff, just like Canon is... In fact, Philip Bloom also is mostly a 'brand' to me. I value his articles and still do with this knowledge. I don't know him as a person and I have no interest in doing so. My point, things are getting way to personal and I don't think that is a good thing.2 points
-
I don't have a problem with Kessler ending their relationship with Bloom. Makes sense of course from a business perspective. Not sure if a press release is needed for that though. I can understand they want to publicly declare they take distance from him as a person. Could have been done all the same without mentioning the specifics. I think that would be a lot more respectful, and mostly more professional.2 points

I don't care about Philip Blooms private issues. I think the press release is unprofessional. Why does it have to go into the specifics like that?2 points

ANDREW, I believed you partnered with Dpreview for video ? What is wrong with them ? Can you please tell them how this camera is shit and not what we want ? It must be a joke, this camera is sooooo 2010. We want a miroless camera from canon that compete A7S. Native EF Mount, 4K 60fps, 1080p at 120fps, IBIS, 16mpx, Full Frame, in the size of A7S with canon 5DIII body quality, and Nikon/Sony like Dynamic Range. That is what we want, not a 1" f5.6 fixed lens 2500USD stuff.... seriously. I am mad.2 points

Canon XC10 4K camcorder
Palpet and one other reacted to johnnymossville for a topic
2 FZ1000's and an LX100 will cover a lot more 4k holes and angles than this camera for less money and probably do a better job of it, especially in the LX100's case. But hey, this is a canon and as far as many are concerned it's the only camera out there. I'm just not seeing much of a point to this camera.. The C300 though, looks like a fantastic camera for it's intended market. Isn't the C100 going for 2900 right now? I'd jump on that before this, even without the 4k. When I first saw it I was thinking it would run around 1k to $1300 max.2 points -
It seems obvious Canon wants to protect it's higher end products, but get real Canon. $2500 gets you slow fixed glass, and a 1" sensor? As pointed out, Canon would not even have a higher end video line if it were not for the success of the 5D series. I remember the Canon XL-1, awesome for the money at the time, sold like crazy. What happened Canon? Samsung should put together a rig with a super 35 sensor, internal/external recording with 422 10 bit codec, XLR connectors, internal 4K (like NX-1) and higher bitrate recording options. They have no higher end to worry about cannibalizing. Sell it for 5K or less, and they would OWN the enthusiast market.2 points

So what if it edges out the RX10? That concept is 2 years old and sells for less than $1000. This is supposed to be a cutting edge 2015 Cinema EOS camera for $2500!2 points -

Adobe updates - Still no H265
Michael Ma reacted to ntblowz for a topic
Powerdirector from Cyberlink already support native H.265 editing, can't really see why Adobe can't.1 point -
I agree that anybody who has strong allegations or is in fact guilty should not be associated with your business. I do think it is more professional however not to make public statements until the person is found guilty. If Philip Bloom is in fact guilty then he must live with that guilt and find help, as anyone who ever thinks about or performs domestic abuse certainly needs therapy and/or medical attention. Additionally, shouldn't the general public just keep their noses out of other peoples business? A lot of people probably have "dark" things they don't want other people to know - there is a law system that takes care of such things, yet the internet will still attempt to be the judge and jury.1 point
-
The presser is on point, it goes into specifics to demonstrate that Kessler doesn't support such actions - even if they're just allegations they can't support him in any way. It doesn't say he did it. From a business perspective it's the proper course of action, terminate Bloom and wait for the situation to be settled - which is pretty standard with endorsement contracts. Its damage control for Kessler with an issue that's getting a lot of public attention in the U.S. lately - as it should. Kudos to Kessler for taking a stand. I hope the two women will press charges and let it play out in court.1 point

rumors: NX1-LX
studiodc reacted to Micah Mahaffey for a topic
There's been many films shot on an 8 bit 420 codec that ended up looking fantastic on the big screen! Take Act Of Valor, or Like Crazy for example! Both features shot on canon dslr. Not to mention a lot of scenes in whiplash, and the avengers were shot on dslrs. I honestly think 8bit 420 is perfectly fine if you don't plan on grading too much.1 point -
It is not a "niche" codec, it is a new codec. It is in fact the new standard. It is used by Netflix, for example. Samsung is just the first to use it in a camera (maybe there are others). Cyberlink added support months ago, and the specs have been available for a long time. Obviously this is Adobe's fault that they do not now support this new standard. As for adding H264 to the camera - the bitrates would have to be gigantic to achieve the same quality as the HEVC 80Mbps (more than 200 Mbps). That is the point. That bitrate would be too much for the card slot and may also cause overheating. Or we could settle for mediocre lower H264 bitrates just so we can use Adobe?1 point

I think, Canon's success with the C models and DSLR-s, especially in the rental-business, is due to the huge amount of quality Canon lenses being around. Exactly this benefit is non-existent by this model, with the fixed lens. Personally, I would only buy a fixed-lens camera, if the lens is very good, as it could never be changed. In this "category" I am waiting/hoping for the RX20 with a 2,8 lens, capable 4K with a reasonable codec.1 point

Canon XC10 4K camcorder
IronFilm reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
I don't usually judge cameras before using them but considering the competition, this camera seems like the flop of the decade. Who do Canon go to for design feedback? Design should be influenced by demand, or spontaneous innovation. Don't see it here.1 point -
Jimmy, the XC10 has ND but..... only ONE setting :-/1 point
-
At the sky high price of the XC10 I'd rather spend a little more and get an old second hand C100 and glue a 24-105mm f/4 to it. But yeah..... not going to do that either. Instead seriously looking at the Samsung NX1, but waiting to see what NAB brings.1 point

Reading thru the various forums and comments online and the vid on youtibe, 90% of those comments are either unimpressed or negative. Admittedly the C300 was not that well received and it found a solid market, but that was a different market and that was then, this is now and its competitors NX1, GH4 A7s offer a lot more for less, and tjhat seems to be the main response to this Camera...time will tell tho I guess, but personally I would not even consider one. I'll stick with my GH4.1 point

Despite Barney's protests, I'm certain there's some kind of pressure somewhere. Either that or the Canon name has a lot more cachet than I thought!1 point

I do 1000$ weddings and can only take 20-25 a year, so i can't ever justify buying even one c300 mk2, let alone 2 or 3 as ideal for my needs. For US top weddings, something like ray roman does as someone mentioned him here, i think he can afford these cameras, so i see wedding videography using this but only at the highest level of work for this kind of bussines. Sure, features like raw and 400mb bit rate are overkill for wedding, but it's not like it can only shoot like that, the headline here is 4k on a 1.5 crop with great ISO and DR, this sounds exceptional for events. I don't see the filmakers market as an atractive one for canon and i don't think they targeted one specific market, seriously, filmakers rent, videographers buy it for good and are way more than filmakers.1 point

The lens has IS (in the lens), it does work when recording 4K. When shooting 1080p you get 5 axis Dynamic IS, which is a combination of lens IS and electronic stabilisation.1 point

This is almost everything you would want in a 4k camera, right now, just amazing specs, except the price. At almost 16k $ this puts the camera in a different category, at least for me, i shoot weddings and it's impossible to justify this kind of camera for the prices i have. I might be wrong, but, in the long run this camera might lose it's resale value very very fast, with companies like samsung and panasonic that have nothing to lose ( they have no serious market share in any category, proffesional or consumer), anytime they could launch a little hybrid still/video GH or NX camera that does almost all of what c300 mk2 does and more, like 4k 60p. I hope i'm wrong and c300 mk2 has a long life, hardly the chance when samsung is serious about this and panasonic keeps pushing for more, right now nx1 is 1300$ body only on B&H. Still, amazing camera, right now this would be almost everything i would want for what i shoot, if someone here can justify the purchase, do it, it really is a very good camera.1 point

Here's the thing though John... I was invested in Canon, both camera and glass.... Then Sony bought out the FS700 and it ticked more of my boxes, so I sold up and moved on. I have since moved on yet again.... I wont cry that Canon or Sony didn;t constantly meet my ever changing needs... I just move to whoever does, say in the knowledge that my needs are not the same as the next man. Canon glass fits everything, so I don't see the issue with moving to another platform. Then if Canon do make your dream camera, move back. and when I said "These things" I meant canon having an attempt at a niche market... why knock it, choice is great.1 point

What camera was used to shoot this? Watching on an iPhone 5S (Retina- generally excellent color), the face skintones look too green. Don't tell me he's an alien and the color is accurate. Everyone knows the green aliens top out around 4'.1 point

Samsung NX1 dynamic range comparison
Escapist reacted to Micah Mahaffey for a topic
I've used both a c100 and an nx1. I'll just say that to me personally the dynamic rand is definitely close! I honestly didn't see that much of a difference at all in Dr on the nx1. I'll also add that the nx1 is a great camera that'd I'd personally choose to shoot on over a c100 or c300 at this point.1 point -
I've been using the camera for a bit and as a B-roll on a C100 shoot. Seems like there is about a stop less on the NX1. Perfectly usable. Name of the game really is protect the highlights on the camera, but thankfully it does have very clean highlight rolloff even if you do blow them out. Great thread on DVXuser: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?334819-Samsung-NX1-Log-Gamma-Dynamic-Range I don't use wondershare, I use Rocky Mountain or Photon. Hopefully we will see what the camera is truly capable of when an editor like Premiere supports it natively.1 point
