  1. Who is launching this on kickstarter first? a small hand grip with back LCD that goes INSTEAD of the LPE6 on the camera back and screw in the bottom mount. And you now put the LPE6 inside the grip. just imagine a perfect pocket camera, you remove the grip/lcd when used on drone or helmet. If I had resources I would launch that right away, can't belive black magic did not think about it.

  2. I love NAB, been more than a few times, but maybe it's my age and where I am in life, but the more stuff I see the more I'm starting to believe that the tech has maxed out for me. So I ask myself, when any semi-affluent middle-school kid has access to comparable IQ that I have, what's the point of chasing the best IQ? 12 stops of DR vs. 14 stops of DR. This color science vs. that color science. If not applied to a good story and a foundation of compelling shots, using the best isn't really much of an advantge. Love great new capabilities. It's exciting, but rarely do I leverage it in any similar exciting storytelling way. For far too long I've focused on playing with the cool toys in the sandbox. Ultimately, I'm thinking I would have been better off learning how to build a superior sandcastle. All one has to do is wander around Vimeo to see a bunch of decent looking IQ and lousy filmmaking. And god forbid you're on a film festival selection committee. So much stuff looks great these days, you're forced to sit through feeble storytelling until you realize the narrative isn;t going to say anything remotely interesting, is just a bunch of hoary tropes, and the story doesn't come close to matching the imaging. Dang near everybody has great IQ devices...and if they don't they will soon...even if they're not actively searching it out to acquire it. It will come with their phone, watch, eyeglasses, pocket drone, or whatever. For me it's time to ignore the camera and go back to the concentrating on ideas and story. That skill is truly where any advantage in this career will allow advancement.

  4. I don't want to come across as being self-serving with this, but I work at one of the retailers that received pre-release firmware to test on the GH4. There are "reasons" V-LOG-L is not part of the v2.2 update, but I can assure you, Panasonic would not have let us release the footage we shot with it if they weren't planning on actually bringing it to the GH4. We tested it in some fairly low-light conditions and, yes, it is noisy, but the footage was still a dream to work with in post compared to CineD. Here is a link to a basic before/after color grade test I did (sorry if the colors are "dodgy" ;-) ): https://youtu.be/AhPK56Ii5sw And our full presentation: https://youtu.be/_aEMUDQlRFE Lens used was a Cooke 40mm t/2.3 2x anamorphic. Again, really not trying to come across as self-serving or spammy here, just wanting to contribute to the conversation.

  6. Haha. Get a grip, mate. I didn't say the DoP's work was shit. I said the "C300 MKII looks shit" - the colours, the motion-cadence, the highlight roll-off. Don't put words in my mouth. You're trying to teach me a lesson in respect by disrespecting me? How sophisticated and wise of you. Get off your moral high-horse. And, well, hmmm, I dunno, "J.F.R", but I like to consider myself a "professional". Yeah, I didn't go to filmschool, nor am I apart of any cinematography society, but I think my portfolio in my signature speaks for itself. Or, perhaps you're right and all those famous musicians and their management teams are wrong for hiring me - cause, I mean, after all, according to you, I'm a "non working pro" - just an "enthusiast" that knows nothing, right? Move along.

  9. Honestly I think some people need to either cough up more cash or quit whining so much and learn the benefits of patience. VLOG will come out or they wouldn't be beta testing it now with these guys. Panasonic knows how important it is. If they didn't they will know it when they look at the Ursa Mini. The price difference between an entry-level Mini and introductory price GH4 is so low that they have to be worried. If you think that VLOG is mandatory you either have the wrong camera for the job or you haven't learned how to expose properly. The most impressive VLOG demo in that video is the side to side comparison outdoor with a bright background sky that's blown out. Go get yourself an ND grad. Jesus. You have to learn how to work within your limitations no matter what camera you bought. I bought a GH4 for personal projects because for the most part it's easy to use, has 4k and looks pretty damn good out of the box. For my high-end projects I do the same as everyone else - work out the budget and part of that is renting high end lenses and cameras. When your looking at a multi-million dollar budget, the cost of renting your cameras comes to practically zero. Now stop whining and go create some awesome stuff with your GH4, A7S, Pocket Camera or whatever. It's all good. Remember that the Wachowski's could have made millions even if the only version of the Matrix they had was an iPhone video.

    Canon C300 2 video

Your problem? Your problem is being a major prick. That's what your problem is. You're going to define my entire life, my entire career, from the random shit I've uploaded to my Vimeo channel - something I haven't even used in over a year? You think someone's Vimeo channel is the be all and end all of what makes them a "professional"? Are you that friggin' daft? Who the f**k are you to condescend me? To tell me I have "no idea what I'm taking about"? To call me "kid"? To tell me that I might "learn something"? To say the small amount of work I have shared is "NOTHING"? Huh? Who the f**k are you to cut me down and burn me like that? You arrogant prick. 99% of the work I do for major artists can't even be shared on Vimeo. I'm under contract, you daft f**k. I don't own the footage. I can't share it, no matter how good it looks and how bad I want to show it off. Whatever. F**k it. You just keep doing your thing, J.F.R. Keep being a major, hypocritical wanker. Keep condescending and character-assassinating others based on a handful of words and Vimeo uploads. Nothing but another friggin' keyboard warrior.

  13. so, checked out the XC10 in depth at NAB, i went there having preordered it with high hopes for a lightweight 4k camera that was cheap and easy enough to just whip out on scouts and do some tests. we were all let down pretty big on this one. first of al it just feels cheap, granted a lot of people playing with them at nab but while i was holding it the viewfinder just popped off so easily it literally fell off the camera. as well it sucked, it might be the worst view finder i have ever looked through, i had to ask, why does everything look purple on this view finder. i went through all the settings, WB, ISO and matched them to the canon c300 next to me and still everything look purple. The camera had one built in ND, that you have to literally go through about 4 steps in the menu to get to, its electronic, not glass as far as i can tell, but NOONE on the floor could tell me how many stops it was, seemed to be at least 3 to me, one person told me it was 1 and i just laughed at that. The lens is parafocal, which is good news, and the front didnt rotate which was great news, so i was still intrigued. then when i checked to see when the aperture started to ramp, um the answer was, immediately! i mean, right away, its only 2.8 from 27mm to about 30mm, but then the horrible thing is that from that point it doesnt change incrementally, it moves 10ths as you zoom, so for example it starts going: 2.9, 3.1, 4.2, 4.5, 4.7, 5, etc…. its absolutely horrible, so much so i put the camera down after that and said thank you and walked away. the only way to shoot with this camera is to probably put it in some automatic iso setting, or set it to a 5.6 permanently. still , what i thought it would be good for is a ready to go, whip it out and shoot, possibly doc camera, nope…you have to dig into the menu for every setting with this tiny joystick thing, it was a pain the ass. i wouldnt even recommend it to a beginner because its so confusing, hopefully no one tries to learn on that camera. i cancelled my preorder 10 minutes ago... my favorite cameras of the show, the arri mini and the black magic micro! the smallhd monitor was also sweet, the clearest eyepiece i have ever looked through. put that on the micro(that does 60fps now) and i have a nice b-cam that shoots 10bit pro res. as well you can choose global shutter up to 30fps. oh as well, the new ursa view finder is also horrible, it looked really green, but i was told it was a demo model, but i went around to each one and they all had different shade of green tint but all looking at the exact same thing with the same settings. i kept asking why doesnt this match the monitor on the camera and i kept getting the same answer, oh, this is not the production model, hopefully we fix that. i would personally skip the BM view finder and stick a small hd on it, if i was at all interested in an Ursa. You CAN have external power on the small HD too, you just need the canon battery to wired power adapter, simple. hope this helps!

  14. hahaha, I opted for the A7s as I was filming Auroras.... Someone bought the 1DC http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?332554-Canon-1D-C-for-sale At the time I was looking, the exchange rate pushed it under £2600.... Was SOOO tempted, but A7s ticks more of my boxes... No regrets.

  16. I have no interest in mastering to 4k yet but you can't even try to pry my 4k cameras out of my hands. It just opens the doors for me as a run & gun videographer (weddings mostly) to be able to crop and recompose in post. I do this all day long with photographs...it's about freaking time I can do it for video. Plus my frame grabs when I need them are much more usable. Every now and then I even stabilize in post which usually amounts to a crop. I still have my 5D3 for photography use but almost never use it for video anymore. Canon is dead wrong if they think 4k isn't a must have. Though granted, I still have yet to master out to 4k for projects...though I do enjoy watching my home videos on my 4k tv which I do maintain at 4k. Maybe my kids will thank me someday for their high quality home videos.

  17. I understand why this topic creates so much anger, Ed. If for example god forbid someone close to me would have been a victim, I'd have strong feelings about it and would want to campaign. Imagine if our mums or sisters would have been beaten. We'd want to do something about it. And if we perceived a criminal in our midst in the DSLR community we'd want to bring about justice. We can't. We don't have the facts. We don't have the remit. We don't have the due legal process. We only have social media and Facebook and some allegations against someone who many consider a friend. So until those allegations are proven by law or dismissed by law, campaigning in the filmmaking community isn't going to wash. It is just going to lose you many friends and supporters and get everyone down. PS - my mum's advice was the same... and she is the biggest feminist I know!! :)

  18. Dynamic range in the acting or in the camera?! I think Gale did a good job with it. The rest, especially the audio is not at the same level... but not exactly unexpected for such a quick shoot promo video. There are a lot of uncomfortable pauses in dialogue, as if the director and actors hadn't had enough time to get into the material.

  22. There seem to be no interest here on EOSHD in the new JVC GY-LS300. Just wonder why as it seems to have most - if not more - features than most here on this forum have been hoping for in new Canon/Sony/Panasonic cameras. This camera seems to be quite innovative in several areas. Here is a link : https://vimeo.com/121192570 Is the lack of interest because JVC is not having a good reputation? Well, Samsung had a so-so reputation before the NX1, right? I¨m by no means a camera tech expert, but this JVC looks pretty interesting. Maybe this camera turns out to be the big surprise of the year

  23. I have this general mindset to be careful of people who don't get on with animals. Some people only suit themselves. That's scary. Human relationships are incredibly complex, and when they go very wrong other complex humans need to make complex decisions about doing something complex to the complex people involved. That's complex. In this world - there is relentless cruelty going on which most of us are blind to. Governments kill. Children are slaves. Animals are tortured. Livelihoods are destroyed. Citizens are brainwashed. Corporations fuel greed. Materialism is a God. Canon won't release an affordable cinema camera. I've got eczema. My dog stole my last sandwich. I like Ed David. I enjoy EOSHD. I appreciate Philip Blooms camera reviews. I love my fiancé. My dog is awesome. My cat is beautiful. My Mother is funny. My Dad is now a fantastic memory. I'm going to be a Dad. My brothers are talented. My life is personal. I'm sharing my life with strangers. Could all be lies. But it's not. It's the truth. It's only my truth, maybe not someone else's. Maybe I'm deluded. Do I actually have a cat and things like that? Are they good for me? I'm crazy. Pretending to be, accidentally on purpose. The moral of my post is.... Erm, there isn't one. It's subjective. Take from it what you want. Or don't. I'm just trying to make sense of this thread and realised I don't know Philip Bloom or Sarah and can't be any help to them by talking about it on a camera tech forum. Damn!

  29. Well I did because I was interested in backing. When you complain about new canon and Panasonic can we don't say negativity, just your point of view (that I agree with in this case). Same thing here, just exposing my point of view on this project. FPS and spec is amazing, I just have the impression it is more a experimental product than else, and also the footage don't lie and on my side I found the 3 footage videos very very bad.

  30. Show me some technicolor that looks like that... I can't imagine it looks the same. The look sure shows the power of raw, but I really don't like the hdr/over saturated candy colored style. Doesn't have anything to do with a proper monitor or not.

  31. The main reason I did not back in the first place is because of the footage that looks absolutely terrible, IQ wise. Looks more like an amateur garage made product than something pro. Well you will tell me the Apple 1 was made in a garage too... :)

  32. According to Art Adams (and confirmed by my own observations), the secret to Canon's skintones is that they push red slightly toward orange. Since most blemishes are redder than the surrounding skin, it makes them blend in and provides an overall creaminess that's not color accurate but is aesthetically pleasing. They also push green tones slightly toward blue to compensate for and contrast with the abundance of orange.

    URSA question (big Ursa)

Yes, it's possible. You can buy the sensor module seperate. Mail from BlackMagic: If you already own an URSA, then you will be able to upgrade to the new 4.6K sensor for $1,995 for the EF lens mount and $2,495 for the PL lens mount. All you will need to do is purchase this “4.6K turret upgrade” and then you can replace the turret on your URSA cameras to get this new higher performance image sensor. This new 4.6K turret upgrade is also gives you the ability to choose between the EF or PL models if you want to change from the mount you currently own. Also good to know: What’s exciting is we are also reducing the price of the current shipping 4K models of Blackmagic URSA EF and PL cameras by $1,000. This means if you don’t have an URSA, it’s now more affordable than ever. Plus currently the URSA 4.6K EF is the same price as the URSA 4K EF plus the 4.6K Turret Upgrade so that means you can get started at 4K and then upgrade later if you need the extra dynamic range! So it seems like you can buy the URSA 4K and the 4.6K upgrade for the same price as the URSA 4.6K. So you'll get an extra turred for free. No idea what you can do with that, but maybe you can sell it

  36. I'm not against tech and I don't see threads like this as being against it at all. Like said above, you can go both routes. But it's good to be reminded in a thread like this once a month when there is threads about the next camera started a hundred times a day. I rewatch the Revenge of the shootout video from Zacuto every now and then for the same reasons. One part in there I like is when one of them says something like, not even three hotshots in Hollywood knows what camera is being used and most of them don't care. A recent example is the guy I bought the Bolex from. Im pretty sure it's the first copy sold used in Sweden ever but still he lowballed it. And he was totally unaware of how rare it was here and that before today it wasn't even in stores this side of the Atlantic. And then it struck me. The guy is an awaward-winning director with an impressive portfolio on imdb, and he doesn't give a crap about which camera does what. Again, I'm not an Anti GAS crusader, on the contrary, I run a tech review youtube channel for God's sake. It's just good imo to be reminded of this topic every now and then. Once a month sounds good imo

  37. This thread themes comes up once a month at least on all the filmmaking forums around. But it is true. It's not too difficult though, you can still chase tech and have a passion for it provided you are honest about how important it is. Just don't put too much time/energy there at the expense of expanding your skills. It kind of surprises me that people are negative on the tech nowadays... I think it's an amazing time. I figure that it's kind of like back in the day when DOPs could choose different film stocks depending on the look and feel they wanted. There's so many cameras and they each have their own signature look, subtle as it might be. A lot of them are so cheap that it's possible to own multiple low end ones. Plus, there's a liberating feeling that no matter how good today's tech is...yesterday's (to a point) is still good enough. Until 1080p is dead and buried (if it ever is), then I firmly believe my GH2 will be sufficient to do high quality work, provided you work within it's limitations. Even though there is newer and better, I don't feel left out of the party so to speak. In essence, a really good DOP With a GH2 will still smoke an amateur with a C300/Red/Alexa etc... It's nice. Great times these days.

    Canon C300 2 video

Non working pros speaking on nothing they know of..... This attitude online definitely needs to stop, especially when enthusiasts such as yourself do not respect professionals being paid for their work and putting out great projects. I would like to see someone here put together a project this fast with more than likely a minimal budget and pressed for time. Acting was not the best, but overall I would say it was a pretty good project and definitely showed what can be done with this camera.

  39. Agree with the guys above.... If EOSHD wants to become a better editorial, Andrew really needs to step out of the mindset of "It doesn't suit me, so it is a bad camera/bad decision". This camera will sell well. Very well.

  40. JazzBox, current MFT lenses really aren't suitable for eng style shooting reliably. The decent ones have no servo and are limited in their range. Original eng cameras had the B4 mount and interchangeable lenses (and most still do) but usually only one lens is bought or carried with each camera. You rarely see eng crews changing lenses in the field. The lens on this camera has a great range and due to its design, they have been able to include 5axis stabilisation which you don't get in traditional b4 lenses. This is obviously not the camera for you but believe me it will find plenty of customers. Eng crews just want something that works, reliably, ergonomically and with minimal fuss. Being able to attach a 25 1.4 prime is really not a priority for them. For you, it might be, so choose the camera that allows it.

  48. Hi Cal, Yes sir, it really really really is single focus, its the real thing. You can pull focus, follow focus and get in really close. Furthermore you can use a zoom as well as your favourite prime glass. Its not only that of course - its CinemaScope just like the movies and it is a professional tool with minimum focus of 0.65m (thats 2ft imperial), no dioptres required, focus throw of 195 degrees, comes with a Steam Punk support rig for 15mm rails and works with prime lenses and zooms in the range 50mm to 200mm and it weighs just 500g (just over 1lb imperial). The mumps are almost undetectable. It is not just a conversion - it is a completely custom developed optical prescription using vintage scopes. The vintage look digitally remastered through a process I call Revisioneering. It is laid out here transferconvert.co.uk/cinemania/rectilux-3ff.html

  49. Oh I nearly forgot to tell you that the beautiful colour tone seems to be a result of using gold filter ND optical glass. I got mine here http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/110676899420?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 The 62mm size is a perfect match to the Rectilux 3FF and the gold filtration has in my opinion a pleasing effect on the imagery, even though the listing says there is no effect on colour balance - there is - but it is very nice.
