  1. and then you got obsessed and failed to recognise that there are two sides to every story, a worrying trait for a filmmaker.

  2. "EOSHD posts about it and suddenly everyone knows" Not true! Was never on the blog. A forum user started a thread. I kept it open and replied. Didn't want to censor it. I am sick of it now and so is nearly everyone else. Thanks for locking the thread Rich. You're a talented guy Ed... but please for the love of god... can we have the old Ed back shooting those amazing NY videos.

  3. Please can we stop all these reposts. It's getting tiresome now and is dragging Andrews superb forum down. It's not a soap opera, it's a cinematography forum.

  5. There are usually plenty on eBay... I love mine... It is the only camera I haven't sold or exchanged over the last few years. My jaw always drops when I get the raw footage into After Effects. It is packed in my bag, ready for a trip to Portugal on Friday, along with the A7s.

  6. I love NAB, been more than a few times, but maybe it's my age and where I am in life, but the more stuff I see the more I'm starting to believe that the tech has maxed out for me. So I ask myself, when any semi-affluent middle-school kid has access to comparable IQ that I have, what's the point of chasing the best IQ? 12 stops of DR vs. 14 stops of DR. This color science vs. that color science. If not applied to a good story and a foundation of compelling shots, using the best isn't really much of an advantge. Love great new capabilities. It's exciting, but rarely do I leverage it in any similar exciting storytelling way. For far too long I've focused on playing with the cool toys in the sandbox. Ultimately, I'm thinking I would have been better off learning how to build a superior sandcastle. All one has to do is wander around Vimeo to see a bunch of decent looking IQ and lousy filmmaking. And god forbid you're on a film festival selection committee. So much stuff looks great these days, you're forced to sit through feeble storytelling until you realize the narrative isn;t going to say anything remotely interesting, is just a bunch of hoary tropes, and the story doesn't come close to matching the imaging. Dang near everybody has great IQ devices...and if they don't they will soon...even if they're not actively searching it out to acquire it. It will come with their phone, watch, eyeglasses, pocket drone, or whatever. For me it's time to ignore the camera and go back to the concentrating on ideas and story. That skill is truly where any advantage in this career will allow advancement.

Agreed, this is one thread that didn't need to be made other than to have a last word and to keep provoking the same conversation... the same conversation... which is basically this: "I think we should stand up on domestic violence! PS I'm a great guy, and I believe the women!" "No one said I aint against domestic violence. You know nothing. No evidence that Phil did it. You crazy sanctimonious shit." "I think we should stand up on domestic violence! PS I'm a great guy, and I believe the women!" "No one said I aint against domestic violence. You know nothing. No evidence that Phil did it. 9. As Jimmy said, it's a camera that won't make you want to sell it in like 1 or 2 years, because of the great image. You can get it for 470€ now here: http://syntex.sk/p/blackmagic-pocket-cinema-camera/c/cameras-digital-cinematography?lang=EN#3

  11. No point in stooping to a common tactic like that - I have great MFT lenses and would like to utilize those.. I also know a lot of people wanting to run Speedboosters etc - it opens up light gathering abilities and DoF possibilities, compared to whatever the built in zoom on this thing can do. Also, that way, the glass is separated out, so you don't pay for it when all you need is a camera, you can get better quality lenses, and if you want a better camera, you are not locked into spending more money than necessary again.. Not sure why you take offense with a simple comment about having two versions being preferable, but maybe you are just having a crappy day.

  12. Or something like this Olympus VF-4 external viewfinder. 2.36 million dots, tiltable and very compact. costs only like €200. Would be cool to see a small/cheap optional evf like that which works over hdmi. Shame it's impossible to power it over hdmi.

  13. Guys!! The camera is basically built and working. I've seen the footage and the finished sensor boards. He is just ramping up to mass production now. It exists, it's not one of those Kickstarter head in the clouds things.

  15. There seem to be no interest here on EOSHD in the new JVC GY-LS300. Just wonder why as it seems to have most - if not more - features than most here on this forum have been hoping for in new Canon/Sony/Panasonic cameras. This camera seems to be quite innovative in several areas. Here is a link : https://vimeo.com/121192570 Is the lack of interest because JVC is not having a good reputation? Well, Samsung had a so-so reputation before the NX1, right? I¨m by no means a camera tech expert, but this JVC looks pretty interesting. Maybe this camera turns out to be the big surprise of the year

  16. Who is launching this on kickstarter first? a small hand grip with back LCD that goes INSTEAD of the LPE6 on the camera back and screw in the bottom mount. And you now put the LPE6 inside the grip. just imagine a perfect pocket camera, you remove the grip/lcd when used on drone or helmet. If I had resources I would launch that right away, can't belive black magic did not think about it.

  17. I just picked up this deal. It's actually $995 but still not bad. Although I rather they have a prime bundled, this lens should be interesting especially with OIS. I feel like everyone on EOSHD has a pocket camera except me or something.

  18. It is not an A cam, but it will be great as a drone/action cam within a film. Can't work out why people are not seeing this? 12 stops, 4:2:2, 4K in a body not much bigger than a gopro.... If someone makes a gimbal for this, it'll be quality,

  21. re: XC10 Is no one else seeing creative possibilities? If you want to strap a "cheap" 4K camera onto drone, car, gimbal (or pool cue!) what are the options, right now? Especially if you need good image, AF and IS. NX1 is pretty heavy, GH4 doesn't have any IS or good AF... Neither have 12 stops (V-log might change that). The idea that it is just some badly thought out ENG camera leaves me scratching my head a bit.... It is clearly meant to be a bigger GoPro/crash cam, for people who care about image quality.

Ed is experiencing the dangers of the countryside ^^. In NY you can blame the noise, the cost of living, the dirt,etc... On the country you will encounter your self, and it takes some time to digest.

  23. Just have to wait until people actually have their hands on it so we can find those fun BM 'quirks' that always seem to pop up. Though I will say I haven't heard too much negativity about the URSA beyond the sheer size of it. I suppose the low-light limitations still exist, so let's hope the new sensor kicks it up a few notches.

  26. Yes it's functional. EOSHD is more about the artistic / cinematic side where a workflow is a labour of love that takes months and a shoot is Kubrick like with 100 takes until the magic is captured. I have little-to-no interest in the functional side. I have my shot getters... FZ1000 for example. Don't need the XC10. That's just my opinion though. Your post Eduardo is pretty bang on in describing the other side of the coin. EOSHD as a blog is my opinion, it's only my perspective and others who are looking for the same tool. The XC10 is a bit of a fob-off by Canon because they are aiming at enthusiasts not just journalists and implying enthusiasts will love it... ahem... most won't.

  27. I respect different points of view regarding Canon's XC10. It's unappealing for most pro creators with artistic qualities, like majority of people who read this site. However, it seems like a good tool IF you practice journalism, where pixel quality comes only after taking the shot itself. At least that's been my experience in journalism. Sure there are great photographers and videographers around me who strive to combine both journalism and art, but these are few and generally very skilled. The vast majority of their jobs assignments en up as "functional"--not artistic--material. So yes, from a journalist's point of view the XC10 seems attractive because: a) It offers the best ergonomics in the business as a run-and-gun instrument b ) It's future-proofed with its 4K capability c) It won't cost media outlets huge amounts of cash when bought in large quantities for the media desk (less or just as expensive as a GH4 with a good lens, but with better ergonomics) d) It's fixed-lens gives the journalist and media outlets themselves one less thing to worry about e) It's a serviceable tool built for functional results, not ultra high quality photographs and video I can see lots of reporters carrying this thing around as good solution for information-gathering. Having said that, I would not pay the announced cost for a glorified bridge-cam. Yet the Canon brand is the most attractive....

The new capabilities will be made available in a free future firmware update to all users who have purchased the FS700 record option.

  32. I am curious to discuss one thing though - about the reaction to lawsuits. SleepyWill suggest it look guilty to do so... I don't think it would. It would just go to show how far someone would go to defend their word risking a shit load of time and money to do so. Damp suggests it isn't always worthwhile... however even if someone has no money, legally they can still be sued and they'd probably have to file for bankruptcy. Or make a donation page or something. Reputation can be everything, and I gave these two examples in the other closed thread: http://www.theguardian.com/technology/2015/jan/02/facebook-defamation-man-wins-lawsuit-over-estranged-wifes-domestic-violence-post http://www.smh.com.au/technology/technology-news/the-tweet-that-cost-105000-20140304-341kl.html Now if lawsuits are pushed, I'm afraid the party will lose if they have no evidence to back up their word. Even if one believes one side is absolutely true. It would go back to the original thread about 'Sometimes the Courts aren't enough' and well... it's complicated... mostly because abused victims don't usually think the first thing they should do is collect evidence and leave their abuser...

  35. If the 5D4 is truly full resolution 1080p (as good as the A7S), and has dual pixels with solid autofocus on EF lenses, comes close to the A7S in low light / sensitivity & similar or better DR, similar or better slomo (60p full resolution at 1080p), a crop mode similar to A7S (and perhaps more sizes), audio preamps as good or better than A7S, then it will be a great replacement for the current A7S (video) + 5D3 (stills) package. 10-bit 422 H.264 would be a bonus to go along with log (why not if they're using 4K to delineate product lines?).

  38. That's good to know! Makes my issues non existent. I do agree with wolf33d though. Wouldn't it be cool if BlackMagic made a system like the Ricoh GXR!? They already have the most important components: sensor block (Micro Cinema Camera), screen/recorder (Video Assist). The only thing that is lacking is a housing/grip with some basic controls (and hotshoe for EVF, like the GXR) - and proper connectors to 'click' everything together without cables. It would become like a URSA Micro

  41. Show me some technicolor that looks like that... I can't imagine it looks the same. The look sure shows the power of raw, but I really don't like the hdr/over saturated candy colored style. Doesn't have anything to do with a proper monitor or not.

  42. Why not make two versions? Fine, sell this to ENG - then make a slightly different version with a mft mount for filmmakers that want to swap out lenses..
    1 point
  43. Imagine NAB without BM. All we'd have is a sensor for next year and a slight reworking of their system (RED)... 2 fixed lens cameras (Canon, Panny)... and 1 great, but pricey C300 mk II. BM certainly know how to shake it up each year.

  44. Unfortunately, this will be big in the ENG world. I say unfortunately, because I'll have to shoot with it one day. I'm fine with the all in one design, built in ND's, etc. all the the things that make run / gun, doc, ENG style work easier. But I have one major beef with this design - the EVF should be where the monitor is and side mounted. What Panasonic, Canon and Sony forget with their EX3's, C100/300 and HVX's is that in ENG, Reality, Event and doc world you're often doing takes up to half an hour or more. Holding the camera with two hands out front and your eye on a rear mounted EVF is OK for five minutes or so, but once it goes longer you'll be begging for a 20b proper news camera balanced on your shoulder. I'm sure every ENG cameraman will agree, it's better to be heavy and balanced then light and all on your arms. If they'd just put the EVF where it should be, then it wouldn't take much to rest it on my shoulder with nothing more than minimal rigging (shoulder pad and handles). As it is, to get it on my shoulder will now require mounting a 3rd party EVF or monitor out front on some frankenrigging or slinging it on an easy rig. This obsession Sony, Canon and Panasonic have with the rear mounted EVF is beyond comprehension and shows they beta test with soccer moms and tourists.

  45. It was something like this that led me to getting a D16 last week. Just started thinking what camera do "I" really want. No focus on which is "best" or at least concidered best nor the latest and greatest. I thought to hell with 4k, 14 stops, super slowo. Instead How do I want my memories to look. When I picture the dog I had before the one in my avatar, what does the memory look like? Is it crisp, saturated, orange teal 4K? Or is it more like an old film? What look would I like my first feature to have and do on. Basically ignoring everything and just look to my self and what I like, not clients or the Internet. One thing lead to another and I now have a used Bolex. Ever since it came out I have re watched Blooms review as well as others footage atleast once a month. Ive always loved it but thought about price, built in ND, lowlight, 4k, slowmotion and so on. Not this time. I have atleast one paid gig where it will be used together with my other camera ahead. But for narative, more personal videos and story telling it will definitely be the A-Cam,. Despite not having the latest specs and party tricks.

  46. This is 99% the way there, but Panasonic have made a very serious mistake. Should be interchangeable lens and Super 35mm. The market for anything smaller chip wise, with fixed lens, is a lot smaller and I don't think it will sell like the original DVX100 did. Panasonic are also crazy to give up on the AF line. AF100 was great. They just needed to update it, make it competitive with C300. Why didn't they? Varicam 35 is amazing but a totally different market and price point to C300.

  48. You charge $1k weddings , other charge $5k and up. It's all about the market and what you can sell. If you are underpricing your work then of course it's hard to understand, but semi pros to professionals work/earn much more and this is where this camera is geared too. No different than people shooting free Music Videos or working with labels getting minimum 10k budgets, it's all about where/how you place yourself in the working industry. Personally there's NO way in the world I would shoot/edit a Wedding for 1k , when I can make that just editing a simple project....... Done with the off topic, problem is most people simply just don't understand.......
