Another Use for the GH4's Anamorphic Mode (16mm lenses)
estarkey7 and 3 others reacted to David Barkan for a topic
Hello everyone! With the new ability to shoot a 4K 1.33:1 image with the GH4, I immediately remembered of my film days (as an AC of course) where you had head and floor room on the viewfinder to shoot... and thought that I could use 16mm lenses on the GH4 with a decent crop... meaning, that one would be able to shoot with 16mm and s16mm lenses, crop out the heavy vignette and still get nice 3K sized footage. Here's a little proof test I shot:4 points -
you kinda did it too jfr, and tons of people here love the nx1. I'd rather we get off topic than nasty3 points

50K (USD) to start a production company

That test was on the original C300, which is only $7k. The mkii has better DR, low light and (finally) 4k. The form factor also counts for a lot (like, a lot a lot). Additionally, you've got pro audio inputs, waveform, 4" lcd, dual-pixel focus assist, 10-stop ND and a ton of other features that make it a really great camera in the studio and out in the field. They can also take a beating. Nothing against the NX1- it would be a great B cam for a studio with this budget. However, neither it nor any DSLR-style camera should be in the running for A cam, where the competition as I see it is the Ursa (mini or full), FS7, Kinemini, etc.2 points -
Davinci Resolve 11 Lite
SleepyWill and one other reacted to Axel for a topic
For now, you should read the manual to understand the basics. Leave out what is obviously not your business. For chapters 10&11 (COLOR!), you should reserve 90 minutes a day. Read about it, see an online tutorial dealing with the specific subject and try it with your own stuff. You can be much faster if you use keyboard shortcuts. Print out those 'cheat sheets' (google) or buy removable stickers. Leave out the 'EDIT'-chapters for now. Resolve 12 (announced for June) will probably be a full grown NLE (multicam, audio synchronization, nesting, audio mixer), it can then substitute your beginner's NLEs. BTW: Never grade in iMovie (don't know for PE, but could be the same). It computes in 8-bit (that's why it feels so fast). That means you can only make one change without quickly losing quality ...2 points -

Probably Canon ignores that internet exists and some people use it, finding informations about prices, specs etc... A friend of a friend that has a friend that work for them sent me this super secret picture of a new model that will be on the market in June: they developed a new camera that uses REAL reel, in order to achieve a real "raw" feel. The first model will have fixed lens (20x OPTICAL!!! wow!!!), EVF, some buttons and... no, it will be not cheap, but enthusiast have to spend if they are serious about video making! (I hope it will be possible install ML on it!)2 points

I've been in Japan for about 11 years now. That doesn't make me an authority on the Japanese camera market or anything but from what I have seen, the average camera enthusiast is shooting Canon or Nikon. I always approach professional camera men and women and ask about how they like video on their D800 or 5DMK3 or whatever and they all look kinda embarrassed and say, I haven't really gotten into video. When I go to the park there are a lot of old men with 1Ds and giant zooms shooting ducks and birds or kids playing with their parents whatever. I get the impression that the major chuck of the domestic market for these companies is probably not looking at the internet for reviews of lists of specs (I know many people are but probably not the majority), nor are they buying these cameras with the intention of doing something new. They are most likely in their 50s and 60s, with full-time positions in a company and nearing retirement and are reading camera magazines that are basically advertisements for these two companies and then going to the big electronics stores and buying them from salesmen who don't know anything about anything. My beef with Japan is that the older people have all the money and are the largest segment of the population so Japanese business and culture will cater more and more to what they want. This probably means less innovation. Japanese manufacturers are finding it harder to compete internationally so some retreat and focus on the domestic market and that means just playing on nostalgia. If they are confident that their domestic marketing campaigns will allow them flex brand power and sell inferior cameras for higher prices than the competition, they will continue to do it and find the logic of your argument incomprehensible. Like all paradigm shifts, people don't really change their beliefs. The older generation just eventually dies off and the new generation is left to choose between two alternatives and usually chooses different than the prior group because they don't have an emotional commitment to the past. I'm also willing to admit that I have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about, though.2 points

Hi guys just wanted to share my mac pro upgrade DIY style. I wanted to build new power PC for resolve and rendering but i was thinking why spend 4k when i can just upgrade my mac pro with a bit of modification. i have Radeon 5770 for monitors and gtx 770 4gb and 550ti for resolve and premiere and any other application that needs it In few months i will add 6core 3.4 cpu and 32 gb memory and another gtx 770 4gb to replace 550. Some people might say oh no what did you do to mac but i really don't care about look only that it can do the job and its under my table where i don't see it at all. I have power supply powering 770 and have relocated my HD where DVD use to be i have used DVD sata connection to power the HD there is one more sata connection for another HD and on top of that i can run extension sata for another 2 HD from the free bays That is it Thanks1 point

Best forget about great lowlight performance on this one. I saw it side by side a C300 Mark II in a special darkened room at the Canon NAB booth. It absolutely sucked. So if you have visions of intercutting material with the C300 Mark II, you better keep the lights blazing...1 point -
Hi mercer, I am using resolve 11 lite too, on a 2009 macbook:). So i know the trouble with the small screen. Basic color grading is possible, but masking becomes really too difficult with such a small screen. As it is a grading program, i think you should not actually use an auto color mode here;) ...that could be done in a program like imovie 11 just as easy. -First you should make yourself familiar with the nodes in the upper right corner. Just create a new serial node....and in that one you can go crazy with all the sliders and learn what will happen when you push what slider. ⌘-D will disable your note and you can check back and forth with your original footage. -Histogram scope is you best friend, never work without it if you dont have a perfectly calibrated screen. -And last you should get some LUTs. There are free ones online. They can be really useful to achieve certain looks.1 point

Obviously the best option would be an A7s, I'd seriously suggest stretching to that if you can. Otherwise, go for a Sony A5100 (I got mine for a mere US$310 like new from Amazon some months back. Go for the A6000 though instead if overheating could be a serious concern you wish to avoid) plus a focal reducer (another hundred bucks) plus a Nikkor 50mm f/1.2 (which would be a few hundred dollars second hand). Won't be as good as an A7s of course, but is the next best thing on a budget! A5100 is the A6000 but with XAVCs added in as a bonus, and at a cheaper price too! http://www.eoshd.com/2014/04/surprise-sony-alpha-a6000-video-mode-huge-improvement/ And the A6000 is the D5200, but with a mirrorless mount and more features. Which allows you to double the light with use of a focal reducer! http://www.eoshd.com/2013/02/nikon-d5200-vs-canon-5d-mark-iii/1 point

$50k! Now you're asking.... I would do this: Get the C300 Mk II as A cam.The 1DC used as a B cam. The A7S as a creative all-round tool. Zeiss Prime Set from Duclos lenses or similar - EF or Nikon Mount. 2 decent zoom lenses to cover the full range. 2 Kino Flo 4-Banks. (get some chroma tubes too)3-head Arri Lighting Kit.Scorpion Light Complete Set.Gels/Diffuser/Polyboard/Reflector.Ronin Gimbal & EasyRig. Oddyssey 7Q+ + sony + canon license. Sound - not sure on models but (wireless transmitter, lavalier, boom, shotgun, external recorder). Studio - get a DIY space, grab some friends and build your own green screen etc.1 point -
OMG.... I have been shooting with Canon for many years, never got any feelings about it, they were just tools. But nowadays, I am getting personal feeling about Canon. It is embarrassing. You treat me like an idiot. What cost-saving? This is a bloody expensive camera. Without any lens, you could have realized even more "cost-saving". No RAW while cost-saving.... Even my little cousin knows, that first comes the RAW then the JPEG. Shame. This is my other favorite.Canon tells us about their fantastic 4K lenses. Oohhh, yes, they are able to resolve 8MP... And now you think, what should you put on your 50+MP topmodel1 point

Canon struck raw, EVF and brighter zoom from XC10 “for cost reasons”
nathanleebush reacted to Guy Calaf for a topic
Canon has the capability to really push its products and workflow forward but as you've been pointing out for quite a while now, it's going in the exact opposite direction. At one point last year I owned a C100, C300, C500 and two 5diii. Needed them for work. Now I'm down to a C500 and one 5diii and I'll be glad when I'll have phased out canon all together from my workflow. The owner operator market needs smart, reliable tools that work and produce beautiful images. I wish they produced 3 pro dslrs, 1) a new super 35 1DC priced just bellow 10k, with 10bit compressed 4k 60p, 2k 120p on two Cfast and the capacity to shoot 20mb stills. 2) a 5dIV, full frame with 4k 30p 10 bit and 2k 60p on the full frame, and stills. 3) a better version of the 7D markII with a nice 10bit 2k 60p, and stills. C300 mark II could work, but no one has seen any real tests yet. The short film is non indicative of the camera's look. If I had to rely on that, it looks like a 4k version of the 8 bit 50mbs that the c300 shoots. Same hard fall outs, no creaminess, very plastic and video just as the c300 was. Raw on the C500 is nice but the worflow is not great and while laying out new products they should have updated their pathetic software and workflow. I hope the rumors of a new beyond 4k C500 are not true, since Canon will not be successful in that market while making junkie cameras like the xc10. That's Arri and Red territory, and they don't make any crappy cameras. I got good use out of the C500 with the 7q, but that's the last Canon Cinema camera I'll be buying.1 point -
Canon struck raw, EVF and brighter zoom from XC10 “for cost reasons”
johnnymossville reacted to William Koehler for a topic
The one thing the XC10 has got is record until the card is full. Having said that Sony could easily take this cameras sales by taking the RX10 and: 1. Enable 4K recording, just like the AX100 2. Remove the clip length limit 3. Sony could even give the price a healthy bump from $999 and most would still be happy. As it is, many will head to one of Panasonics u4/3rds offerings, methinks.1 point -

Here is a new video out shot with the JVC looks darn good to me. Other then better low light shooting i do not see the Sony as any better in any other way, Both the JVC and NX1 record 4K, And the JVC gives you pro audio, Video streaming and a lot more. I like the JVC for a camera you can go shoot with that has everything built in ready shoot, I have had no problems shooting with my NX1 i have had since December i have well over 100 hours on it the image quality is sharper then the Sony and when you need auto focus the NX1 is much better, and i have no problem with Dynamic Range. And he HD slomo is quite good to at 60 and you have 120 as well. And here is the guy that shot all that talking about it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PW_U93HJbAo1 point

Someone gives you £12.5k ($18,800) to buy filming equipment. What would you do?
IronFilm reacted to Oliver Daniel for a topic
That's not bad at all! I'll put it forward. Lots of opinions and suggestions - very interesting how there are many differences but i've noticed a big push for a major camera body in the league of an FS7 from most. My own business doesn't own a "Big A Cam", we normally rent when it's needed and we do just fine. An FS7 for example is £130+VAT per day, good value for a days shoot. (although plans are in place to get a Big A Cam soon). My own opinion is simply not to cannibalise his budget for investing in a huge item, and use the money more sensibly. Get some lenses for corporate work (as suggested by some) and boost the vintage set for more creative purposes. Make more money and THEN invest in the Big A Cam, especially with cams like the URSA Mini on the horizon. What I've learnt from running my own business is that efficiency is key to being successful. If your Mac starts playing cheeky buggers, things get bad quickly and deadlines are missed. If you don't have bare essentials on hand for quick bread and butter jobs, you lose money. If you don't have decent storage cases, gear gets wrecked and repairs are costly. Another way of looking at it is if he buys something like the FS7+Mac+lenses, then hires more lights if needed and uses some profits to purchase the lights he needs. He can make money off the rental fee for the FS7 when not in use, undercuts rental houses. Sells his other camera bodies and unused equipment to get the A7S as B-cam for current gimbal, slider etc. That's another nice solution. Now my head hurts......I should really get him to sign up to the forum and do this for himself! I like helping out though!1 point -
FS7 is a more professional form factor for serious use. Being shoulder mount lends well to a mobile shooting style, making a gimbal less necessary. The Sigma 18-35mm Art Lense is a very sharp piece of glass. So sharp it can replace a set of primes. This saves both time and money. Miller Compass - the quality, strenght and smoothness of Miller is well known. It was in fact Miller who invented the fluid head. Their compass series can handle a wide range of cameras from as light as 4.4 lbs to around 20 lbs. This setup is a serious pro kit on a budget.1 point
-
Calculate the predicted rental charges on 3 years of FS7 or C300 Mark II shooting then deduct it from the predicted depreciation value of the cameras in that same time period. I predict the C300 II would lose $6000, the FS7 $4000. If the rental costs exceed that in 3 years then it makes more sense to buy them. Not to mention, buying allows them to be used for your own personal creative work! Lenses hold their value well. A7S a good choice too. But in his situation I'd probably get the FS7, a Mac Pro, a 4K display & spend the rest on Canon lenses and LED lights.1 point

I'll give you that, although the 4K mode entails a heavy crop and still needs a transcode. Unlike Andrew, I'm actually a big fan of the NX1/NX500 1080p image. Virtually no rolling shutter and very competitive with the other 1080p cams.1 point -
