  1. If he's starting building a company this is a bad idea for a 2 reasons. 1. No disrespect to him, but the chances of a first time film being a hit is slim to none. 2. His bread and butter is corporate, music videos, and events. With good equipment he'd be able to book jobs and make bank on simple projects. Work some events and make back that $18,000 in no time. After some capital is built, then maybe shoot a short/feature.

  2. Motion cadencemo, I go so - here's something I whipped together - sony f35 - CCD - I softened the image in post to try to make it feel like super 16mm or god knows what - let me know your thoughts:

  3. What I think is the only way it can be. Me! Me! Look at me! I'm typing on the Internet! Validate my opinion. Validate me! Let me know the camera I own is awesome. Tell me I make great choices in the things I buy!! Wait, are you agreeing or disagreeing with my opinion? :-) I actually like all frame rates depending on what I wanna do. Seems like mixed frame rates in the same film could be exploited as a narrative tool as well. ...and slow frame rates too. I once shot some stuff @15 0degree shutter for a cool effect.

  6. Cheers for making some suggestions Zach. I'm always one of the first to say that creativity/story/pre-production/lighting is far more important than the gear, but the gear is part of these creative choices and also part of a business model which wants success. A bit of history about myself - I've made over 250 music videos and 20+ corporates through my own production company. We are small, but doing it every day. We focus mainly on creative development and ideas. Gear comes 2nd - but we wouldn't of got anywhere if we didn't buy anything and invest. We don't have the capital to invest in more staff, so we invest in the content we produce, the right tools and hire someone if we need them. The guy I'm helping out wants to basically do what I am doing, sort of. Different boats. Same principle. He needs the gear to start-up and storytelling will quickly become centre stage. The reason why we are not joining forces is because we are too different with what we want to achieve.

  7. Not sure if you guys have seen this, but the newest update allows for color temperature readings: http://www.adamwilt.com/cinemeterii/ All you have to do is buy this Luxi adapter, attach it on your iPhone camera, and the app reads out nearly perfect color temp.

  8. Anyway, on topic of future possibility of raw recording: Lexar Professional 1066x 32GB and SanDisk Extreme Pro 160MB/s 32GB memory cards have been tested to have write speeds just above 70 MB/s on Nikon D800 (source: http://www.cameramemoryspeed.com/nikon-d800/fastest-memory-sd-cf-card-tests/) Compare this to the calculations for the D5100 live view feed from user leegong at nikonhacker: If the D800 live view feed is about the same resolution, it might be doable to write the raw live feed on the fastest memory cards at 24 fps. I doubt that the Nikon cameras which only have SD slots can reach the same write speeds, so I assume some kind of cropping to a lower resolution of the live view feed would be necessary on those cameras if you want to reach 24 fps.

  9. Did you read this entire thread? His friend wants to invest in his production company. The story argument is totally lame. the friend is already working on different projects. Oh yeah, and we don't need poverty tourism in India...

Not the movies I've made. I shoot mostly available natural light. And you might want to ask Terrence Malick how he feels about your assertions. Still... One of my favorite films is Casablanca --so I do get your meaning.

  11. It would be nice if Andrew could do some test of this (if has the time obviously), because he has access to both (Shogun and NX1).

    Cine Meter II for iPhone

Color readings are exceedingly sensitive to calibration and to whatever you're using (if anything) over the lens: I have two Luxi For Alls from different production runs, and one reads 200K warmer than the other, though they're identical to the eye. If you want to run in reflected mode (there's a switch for that in Settings), calibrate reflected-mode camera "sensors" separately from the Luxi "sensors"... and make sure you're using a color neutral measurement target for reflected readings, like a DSC Labs OneShot (white/gray side) or a white-balance card (various vendors) or the like (most white paper isn't really neutral; some types even have brighteners added that fluoresce under UV light). Tip: if you want incident color temperature but don't want to use Luxi, cut a small bit of Lee 216 diffusion and hold it (or tape it) over the camera (and calibrate through it, of course!). It's not nearly as convenient, but it is cheaper... and it works pretty well.

    1. Because it looks better. 2. Because it suspends your disbelief. 3. Dreamy is a form of imagination. 4. Imagination can create great art. 5. Tell A DJ that vinyls are history. Now tell a filmmaker the same thing about 24p. 6. Just my opinion.

    Cine Meter II for iPhone

Thanks for the shout-out, AaronChicago. To be clear, Luxi works on Android devices as well as iOS: it's a simple clip-on photosphere that converts the built-in camera into an incident-light sensor. The Luxi folks have free apps on both iOS and Android for incident light metering. It's pretty cool: http://www.provideocoalition.com/review-luxi-for-all-incident-metering-photosphere-for-ios-and-android Cine Meter II, however, is iOS-only. And I don't claim to read out nearly perfect color temp <blush>, only that Cine Meter II's color readings are about as good as other color meters ( http://www.adamwilt.com/cinemeterii/colormetering.html ). Color metering turns out to be fraught with difficulty and uncertainty, and even "real" color meters often interpret the same source rather differently: http://www.dvinfo.net/article/production/lighting/on-the-color-of-light-and-the-measurement-thereof.html .
