5D IV vs A7S II
johnnymossville and one other reacted to Cinegain for a topic
I don't think a camera out of the mirrorless system works for video anymore. That's obviously though, my own philosophy. I just don't know what to do without an EVF anymore. An OVF feels like a step back. Especially if you don't want to use a loupe and being a hybrid shooter that relies heavily on a good liveview experience as well. Then I also don't think Canon is very forward thinking. They will have to rely on their brand awareness and people wanting to stick to their native selection of L-glass and willing to take hits in the form of compromises without questioning it. They might have the some of the latest Canon implementations donated by previous models, such as the 5DmkIII, 1DC, 7DmkII and XC10 like Ebrahim speculates, which would be nice. However, it's still Canon. I think you can forget that A7S lowlight performance. You won't get any high speed shooting done with this either. In fact, you won't have a lot of bells & whistles which is standard for most mirrorless cameras. Then they want to keep people from buying something like that rather than a Cxx-something camera, so they'll find a way to really cripple it, I'm sure of it. Yet it has 4K, so it has to come in at atleast 4K USD as well. Makes sense, right? People can hate on the GH4 and new G7 all they want. But it does do an incredible job for the price. EVF, Vari-angle touch display, internal 4K, flexible mount system with focus peaking and everything. Those are really key selling points to me. Yeah, sure, I would've liked better lowlight performance, but I'd be happy enough if in the near future they would work towards a fairly clean ISO6400 and amazing ISO3200, as I don't really finding myself having the need for ISO400000 or the likes. It's harder to get a really shallow depth of field. Well, a lens turbo and a fast lens at a carefully picked focal length helps already. Wouldn't it be great if the next GH was the next BMPCC doing RAW? Well, yeah, but a good codec, bitrate and LOG profile would come a long way already. Personally am hoping for great things from the GX8... I would have something that size and those features, most notably so, sensor stabilization during video recording would be amazing! Perhaps not even at 4K. I was really excited when the press release of the E-M5II came about, had already put up an pre-order, just to regret that after noticing the shortcomings. The concept was nice, I feel like now it's up to Panasonic to do it right. I would love something that I can put to good use for both photography and videography and that can be used either in an elaborate set-up, or very compact and minimalistic with nothing more than a tinie tiny lens. You might not like the color coming out of the Panasonics, but you must've seen some footage you later found out came out of an GH4 that you quite liked that proves that in some skilled hands it is capable of great things. Which actually goes for any camera. If you're only getting junk, you might just got your process all wrong. And if you never even gave it a go, just judging on bias... well, give it a try. You might spend a little longer on color, but then perhaps you find yourself suddenly noticing the 5DmkIII footage looking out of focus the whole time. But it's also a question of: do you have that kind of time and patience/skill to do so? Do you, in the end, still prefer the look of one camera over the other either it being color science, softness or 'motion cadence'? What are you willing to spend? And so on. Different preferences, tastes, uses and budgets lead to different answers. In the end you just gotta do what feels right by you. Personally. An A7SII with built-in stabilization, internal 4K and articulated screen would be damn tempting. The fullframe magic, shallow depth of field, just bokehlicious, the lowlight performance!! But you know, I'm kinda married to the M43 system... and fullframe glass, especially if you want some native mount electronic lenses for hybrid shooting, would be quite the investment and added bulk. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't go 5DIV in the end either. I have no Canon glass whatsoever and not looking into buying some either. And as said before, not the biggest fan of OVFs. I do like the image out of the D5300, but for hybrid shooting the OVF/Liveview kinda ruins it for me. For me the future is in the feature packed mirrorless cameras like the GH4, NX1 and the A6000. With sensor stabilization needing to be the next big thing to win me over. So many primes and third party lenses, with third party adapters that would instantly become crazy useful handheld. It's a matter of time... until then, there's lots of gear to enjoy shooting with already!2 points -
GH4 on Ronin & Low light conditions
JazzBox and one other reacted to John Palmer for a topic
Ive had to shoot a lot of things at 1600 and I have the best results if I shoot in 4k and downsize to 1080p. Natural profile, master pedestal: +5, -1 highlight and + 1 shadows, contrast -5, saturation -4, noise reduction -4, sharpness - 5, and use a lens that is f2.8 or less I personally like the noise from the gh4 and downscaling definitely makes it look a whole lot better. sharpening will make the grain stand out more. In most situations where I know it will be pretty low light I use my c/y zeiss 50mm f1.7, which is sharp enough wide open to help with most extremely dark situations I also have Neat Video but dont really use it that much unless its a shot that wasat 1600 ISO but is still like 2 stops under exposed. It may be better to just go higher in ISO to expose properly than to under-expose and try to lift in post (in terms of grain)2 points -

Come to Think of it, WHAT was Panasonic thinking when it made such an excellent video shooter, without a mic in? No ND Filter, fine; no articulated screen, hmmm .... ok, fine; no touch screen (despite so many Panasonic Cams having them now) hmmm ... that too fine; no HDMI Out, well ... maybe they're saving their GH4 line, otherwise people may migrate away; but, No Mic In .... why???1 point

Yes, DR is independent of sharpness, so you'll need to set sharpness separately. If you zoom in, you will see artifacts at the edges if you shoot at sharpness 0, and that goes away at -10 (it did in my tests anyway). You can always sharpen in post if you wish, but with the 4K image out of NX1, I don't see any need unless you crop. Also, AFAIK sharpening in camera increases its information content, which stresses the encoder because there's more info (spurious, but still more) to encode within the same bandwidth. So, low sharpness will help improve final IQ that way as well.1 point

5D IV vs A7S II

if only the A7s2 had an EF mount, and a bigger body.i cant hold it straight! still CANON has me worked up in anticipation more that the sony A7S series. im going to shoot with both a mark3 and a a7s in a wedding soon. and test how they work on my field. ????????????????????? new canon mark4 what i expect 1. better low light, this is certainty as Canon historically improves it from model to model 2. 4k external, probably with a specialty gadget/recorder to milk more money and not sabotage the 1DC 3.the beautiful ergonomics and usability of the 5d series 4. same pixel count 5. cleaner sony sensor ?improving on the softness..1 point -

Both seem like capable cameras. My only gripe with the LX100 is that there is no mic input. The FZ1000, even with the slower lens and it's clunky size, it has mic input with manual audio adjustment. I really think the G7 may be the best bet for me, ability to change lenses, mic input, 4K. Looks like a gem. Then, maybe, get the FZ1000, cheaply in a couple months.1 point

Sony A7s vs Samsung NX1 test
Marco Tecno reacted to Ed_David for a topic
all from a 10 sec test. And noise at 400 iso was cleaner or similar on nx1 than a7s. I have big hopes for this camera.1 point -
If you expose to the right (ETTR: http://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/7922-ettr-the-ultimate-exposure-technique/ ) GH4 gives back really good images, even at 1600 ISO. I also like the grain of the GH4, it is very filmlike. For the profile I would use Natural (with contrast, saturation and sharpness all the way down) or Cinelike D with just the saturation down, because it is very flat. I would not mess with master pedestal or shadows/highlight, you can see the problems here: http://noamkroll.com/the-best-gh4-settings-for-video-why-you-shouldnt-be-tweaking-things-too-much/ My 2 cents1 point

Final Cut pro X vs adobe premiere pro CC

Simple reason for me to choose Adobe is it is compatible with both windows and mac OS, so when I change my computer from windows to mac, I can keep using it without prchasing again.1 point -
While I agree with your general comments about DSLR sales trending down and the market fragmenting, Canon is still so big that even if the 5Dmk4 is a sales "flop" for Canon, that still means it sells many many more than most of its competitors would.1 point

I'm with Cinegain. An EVF is a personal requirement for video work. I'll never have my primary camera be a DSLR again.1 point

I would assume it is more comparable to the LX100 due to sensor size, but you have the ability to change lenses and you have a mic input. I was sold on the FZ1000 as my next camera, but I have LBA, so when I learned about the G7, I think there is no substitute at this price point. I must assume, the LX100 and the FZ1000 will drop in price soon after the G7 release. So maybe I'll be able to get both.1 point

I have read time and time again that no matter how professional you attempt sound, unless you have a sound crew, the audio is going to be lacking. I don't have access to professional equipment, I don't have access to a sound engineer to mix the audio on set. And even Hollywood productions, with all of their money and skill, usually end up post dubbing the dialogue. But I do understand that audio is important, I just don't want to be a slave to it. That's why I am so excited about this Shure. What camera are you looking to get?1 point

Canon 50mm F/1.8 STM - The legend just got even better
Jimbo reacted to AaronChicago for a topic
I'm not too torn up about not being able to use face tracking. Continuous AF is good enough and I always have my left thumb on AF lock. If the camera is still and someone is walking away/toward its just as easy to use manual focus.1 point -
Not sure what you mean? When I was looking a few weeks ago, the Macbook Pro did already have a dedicated video card (the Geforce 750 M). The move to Radeon seems like a poor choice to me as the CUDA cores of Nvidia are more widely supported1 point

Don't get me wrong, Ebrahim, I just did the unbelievable, switching from N to C... but only for the c100MKII, and only for video, I had to add. Got sick with the handling of the Nikon DSLRs. Ironically, I have a ton of Samyang, Nikon and Zeiss glas, in between a lot of fast primes, and exactly ONE (1) fuzzy cheapo-fanplastic Canon zoom, the 18-55.The last one I bought second hand just out of curiosity, because I had not planned to invest in Canon lenses (zooming/focussing the other way as Nikon lenses...).and guess what ... -- this F*** little zoom is my most valuable lens for the C100 at the moment! When I tried to focus manually I had a lot of false peaking with my trusty primes; even with the VF loupe I was too much struggling for sharp content. That changed the moment I tried the AF. Probably a game changer? At least for any steadycam/gimbal work, where you didn't want to touch the body. Yes, the new 50 is a steal. Unfortunately we are allmost sure like Jimbo said, that face detection and auto iris are not supported, just like the 17-50/2.8 ... so, no free lunch. and no reason to invest. :-(1 point

Do we even need to speculate about the Canon 5Dmk4? As it is sooo easy to predict: 1) they'll sell bucket loads of it. (thanks to their marketing machine, their size, and retail presence, and idiot friends giving recommendations to their mates while not having a clue....) 2) but tech spec gear heads like ourselves who actually know their sh*t will be very very disappointed in what a flop it is.1 point

From what I have read from multiple sources the 40mm STM and this new 50mm STM do not enable face-detection AF on the C-line cameras. A real pity =( I'm currently invested in the m43 system for my business but have been researching the C100 Mark 2 for a potential new A Cam. It looks like a fantastic machine. However... the one thing that I currently see as a weakness for the Canon C-line cameras is... the lenses. I know you must think I'm crazy, people are always singing the praises over Canon's incredible lens line up, but I just don't see it for their Super 35mm sensors. I either have to buy very expensive L lenses that have focal lengths and image circles designed for full frame, or sharp EF-S lenses that have plastic build quality, un-cinema-friendly zoom/focus rings and very uninspiring aperture ranges. If I spend £4000 on a camera, I want an awesome standard zoom lens that uses all the features the camera is offering. I want f/2.8 throughout the range (so I can gain the advantage of the Super 35mm sensor!), I want 24mm full-frame equivalent at the wide end, I want a beautifully smooth zoom and focus ring so I can operate old school, and I also want OIS and all those sexy AF options at my fingertips so I can nail more shots on the fly. Maybe I want too much? =) Anyway, I love the image I can get from my GH4, and I love my Olympus 12-40mm lens. It's a real swiss army knife of a lens with its clutched hard-stopped focus ring, great zoom ring, constant f/2.8 and that wonderfully handy minimum focus distance, and the whole package weather-sealed. Okay, no OIS, but it does everything else perfectly and no problem sticking it on my small Glidecam HD1000 for stabilised shots. Anyway, sorry to jump on your thread Ebrahim. I do like your posts, I just worry you are too deeply in love with Canon sometimes and she blinds you with marketing ;-) Canon still have some work to do before they get my hard-earned money. Strangely at the moment it's the lenses that are the biggest sticking point for me.1 point

The bokeh of FF can be a bit overkill though tbh. Like even in Game of Thrones which uses Super 35 I find a bit annoying that they have all these amazing sets but then everything gets blurred out when someone speaks and theres a head shot1 point
