  2. Kung Fury is most creative and fun film I've seen since Napoleon Dynamite. Here's the link - a Swedish film funded by Kickstarter - here's a link to the full film. - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bS5P_LAqiVg Basically it came out of nowhere - made by David Sandberg for no money just with his friends and raised on Kickstarter up to $600k for a 30 minute film that beats pretty much every Hollywood action comedy I've seen in the past 20 years. And all in 30 minutes. It's just a pure idea that's hilarious and so well made and thought out. He took his skills from music videos and created something more creative and brilliant than made by a much larger budget like Mad Max: Fury Road. With a more realized world, better script, and more interesting characters. You don't need hundreds of people and studios behind you to be creative - just a little idea. That fat girl is David Sandberg. He circumvented the whole world of Hollywood and made a better Hollywood movie than Hollywood could make. You don't need hundreds of screenwriters and rewrites and famous actors and egos - just one vision - one idea - and a bunch of friends, and a little bit of money. The internet allows this to happen. The Internet allows anyone a fighting chance. It is decentralized. Gabe Newel, the CEO of Value talks about this - if you have a good idea, it will get out. Word of mouth. It just gets out. So next time you make something, anything - just make it good. Put all your money into making it good and the Internet will take care of the rest. The film is a trojan horse - it seems silly but the message is simple - "Hollywood - with all your focus testing and test screenings and computers you can't overcome something simple - film is about storytelling and mood and following the vision of a director or small-knit group of friends. You have become lost and distant to what is possible in the modern era." With more films like Kung Fury becoming successful, I now have renewed hope in the future of filmmaking. Boring and unremarkable films like Ex Machina and Chappie and the Avengers 2 of the Hollywood machine can go far, far away and real passionate auteurs can make their films from anywhere just with going straight to the people, who are much more intelligent than Hollywood gives the world credit for.

    Selling my NX1

    It's a fantastic camera, but I could use some of the money toward getting an apartment with my girlfriend, and some of it toward a couple of additional lights. I looked back at stuff I shot on the GH1 and thought it still held up well, and I started to like the idea of trying to work harder to make my old camera sing. So, it's part "I need cash" and part "I already had a camera, I should add to my lighting kit and try and get better at that".

  5. A free non-linear editor that will be good enough to do a lot of work - and a great organizational tool like Resolve futher makes me think this is going to be a game-changer again. Why put all this stuff out for free? I have no clue - guess it gets more people to like Blackmagic.

  6. I have Panasonic G6 and GH4: no problem on both with Olympus 12mm, 17mm, 25, 45. I choose to sell them to buy other gear I needed (a BM Pocket, some old primes...) but I regret that, because they were amazing, especially for stills, where AF is a must. For video I'm happy with old manual lenses, but if you shoot both video and photos Olympus are just great!

  7. Man you guys are a tougher audience than reddit. Wow. Also I thought Tiny Furniture was whiney, boring, and petty bourgeois issues. Just like my little film, "The Quiet Escape." I think Kung Fury is touching, sweet, creative, and memorizing much like the first Matrix and had a sense of humor. But hey, I guess we all have opinions.

With the exception of the gun being fired down the phone (stolen from Danger 5, a much better low budget retro-genre inspired work about cheesy heroes fighting Hitler, and it has dinosaur-headed people too), all the best gags in Kung Fury fit in the initial 2 minute trailer. And they worked much better in that context. Kung Fury is nothing more than a technical showpiece. The script is built on the premise that gore, swearing and pop-cultural pastiche is endlessly amusing. If you told me this was written by Seth MacFarlane, I'd have believed it. I suppose Kung Fury could be thought to have a more realised world than Fury Road if by 'more realised' you mean, 'more locations', but that's about it. The attention to detail and art direction in that film brought a believable and genuinely original vision to the screen. Kung Fury is an amalgam of the last decade of 80s parodies, thrown into an ultra ironic 'anything can happen!' universe. There's no real narrative to ground the nonsense (unlike Danger 5), and genuine wit is almost entirely absent. Better characters? What characters? There is no humanity to anyone. The characters have so few distinguishing features that they aren't even clearly defined as comic archetypes. Kung Fury is lazy, coasting by on its concept. Fury Road is one of the most brilliant pieces of fantasy filmmaking to make it to the screen in the past decade. One is seeing a brief burst of viral interest, and the other is going to be talked about for many years to come.

  10. I beg to differ. unless you're saying that a little fat girl + her daddy's video camera + a $630,019 budget for 30 minutes of content is somehow a game changer. I've seen better, made with fewer resources. we all have.

Here's how I see it, This is where they make money. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products In every broadcast studio or mobile I've visited recently there has always been at least one BMD Product in the racks. And their model of using as unified parts as possible is smart not only for keeping cost down but also it its easy to recognize and create a brand. That's why their buttons, displays, connections and such look the same across all the products. I spoke to a rep that said that they where in fact the worlds biggest customer of many components. Much bigger than Canon, Sony and even Samsung because they use the same in all products and that its the key to keeping cost down (I suspect this is one reason for the audio inputs on the BMCC and obviously why the BMOC looks identical). So the reason for example the Video Assist to be so low cost is because they could bulk buy the parts. I haven't seen it but I bet the screen for example is found either on one of the URSAs or a scope or something in their line up. Same with connections, SD card reader from the pocket and so on. And if people start editing in Resolve eventually they might get tempted to try raw, want more DR or higher bitrate. And then there isn't that many cameras to choose from. 90% of them will choose a BMD camera. For me Raw vs compressed video is what I imagine Heroin is like compared to alcohol. Tuff to get the same fix. I have a Bolex and love it to death but I've had 5 BMD cameras and if I needed a big crew camera, eng camera or drone camera the choice would be BMD 100% of the time. (Unless Bolex did a new camera but that might be asking to much from a small company.)

    Yup i did put up Cineslider, lights, steadycam and shoot it in 20min. But cos im amateur i didnt want use them.. alone... Also the Sun didnt want to put pause on the rising.. Idk why, i did dance to it but hey i tryed

  16. They will work fine. Regarding IS, note that Panasonic does not have OIS on any of the wider prime lenses, and not on their own 7-14 either. In this case, the Olympus 7-14 will at least provide an extra stop of light compared to the Pana version.

  17. Well the control board is $25 000 or something like that. They sell mixers, complete broadcast trucks, cameras, a recorder, EVFs, capture cards etc etc. Resolve is just an application to tie it all together.

  18. To my knowledge you have no image stabilization in the Oly lenses. On Panasonic cameras you need native lenses to get that.

  20. They are M43 so they will work on any M43 body regardless of the brand. I am curious how good are these lenses, so if you ever get one, would love to see what they can do!

  21. I would like to give my platform to up and coming musicians around the world to showcase their music through my cinematography to an audience of around 250,000 people per month. This is the EOSHD Music Challenge. Readers act as DJ - they can pick music from up and coming singers and bands, with suggestions that might suit the mood of my cinematography and future camera tests. Cinematic music is really important to me but I haven't been satisfied with The Music Bed or similar resources so far. How does the challenge work? 1. Suggest a band or musician on this thread. They have to be up and coming not signed to a major label or already huge. 2. I investigate and do the contacting of those which I like and credit you for the find! 3. If they agree to let me use their music, they will find a new audience through my blog and hopefully sell some tracks on iTunes from a link on EOSHD. You will be designated as the discoverer of talent and winner of the challenge. 4. You can have fun with this challenge and play DJ - use your taste to select the right standard of music to fit EOSHD and in turn you might discover new music yourself which you really enjoy listening to. 5. My cinematography at EOSHD is purely an artistic endeavour and experimental, non commercial and does not make any money but for all videos featuring unsigned acts I will consider enabling the Vimeo Tip Jar and sharing the proceeds with the musician 50:50! This is a new idea and it will start off as a trial. If it works then great! If not then we will swap things around until it does, because I am determined to find new music and up and coming artists. Good soundtracks are really important for filmmakers and I believe in finding new talent. Perhaps you know some artists yourself? Perhaps you are one?

  22. Eris You are right. When you start hitting the very far edges of the Bolex, it starts to distort. Not a problem locked down, but distracting otherwise, and pain ugly on pans. I use my 16/32 with a set of FDs and I love the look. Quite simply the best rendering anamorphic I've seen and used, even ISCO. So much resolving power and a natural low contrast effect that can help a lot of digital artifacts. I'd be interested to know where you got your lens calibrated.
